THE ACADEMIC PROCESSION

he tradition of the academic procession and academic apparel goes back to the early days of the oldest European universities, where gowns and hoods began to be required in the fourteenth century. Although European institutions continue to show great diversity in their specifications on academic apparel, current practices in this country follow the code established by the American Council on Education.

Academic apparel indicates the most advanced degree held by the wearer. Gowns for the bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees are distinguished by the variation in sleeve length and by the width of the edging. The color of the edging of the hood indicates the subject of the degree (e.g., white for arts, yellow for science, light blue for education, dark blue for philosophy) and the colors of the lining of the hood indicate the institution from which the degree was received. For Montana State University Billings the colors are blue and gold. Apparel for the doctoral degree is distinguished by the panels on the sides of the hood, the gold tassel on the cap, and the velvet trim on the gown.

Montana State University Billings’ baccalaureate candidates who have excelled academically wear honor cords. Gold honor cords (signifying summa cum laude) distinguish graduating seniors who have attained a grade point average of 4.0. Gold and silver entwined honor cords (signifying magna cum laude) distinguish graduating seniors who have attained a grade point average between 3.75-3.99. Silver honor cords (signifying cum laude) distinguish graduating seniors who have attained a grade point average between 3.50 and 3.74. Blue and white entwined honor cords (signifying high honors, 3.75-4.0, and honors, 3.50-3.74) distinguish recipients of Associate degrees and Certificates. Honors designations are based on the cumulative grade point average which includes graded transfer work from other institutions.

The marching order for the Montana State University Billings academic procession is as follows: grand marshal, emeritus faculty, faculty marshal, faculty, senior marshals, candidates for academic degrees, platform party, color guard. 

New Lecturer Emeritus Alan B. Christensen

Alan B. Christensen Lecturer Emeritus of Educational Theory and Practice

U

pon the occasion of the retirement of Mr. Alan Christensen from Montana State University Billings, the Board of Regents wishes to express its appreciation for his service to the University, the Montana University System, and the people of the State of Montana..

EXPLANATION

M

r. Christensen holds a Bachelor of Science from Montana State University and a Master of Education in Multi-Disciplinary Studies, with a K-12 Reading Endorsement, from Montana State University Billings. Prior to entering university service, Mr. Christensen was a Title One Reading Instructor at Crow Agency Public Schools.

Mr. Christensen has contributed institutional knowledge and service to the College of Education for 17 years, serving as a lecturer in both the reading and social studies programs, as well as teaching foundational courses for the College of Education, such as Education and Democracy.

Mr. Christensen exemplifies excellence in teaching. He is creative and often uses real-world examples in his teaching. He is a master storyteller and students enjoy his humor and wisdom.

Mr. Christensen’s mantra is “education is relationships” and he lives out this mission daily in his work. As an advisor, he spends countless hours with students, ensuring that they are cared for academically, but he also recognizes their needs as individuals. He was recognized in 2017 by the Montana State Literacy Association when he received the Pam Atchison Memorial Reading Award, a prestigious honor recognizing a teacher who has promoted love of reading in students.

In addition to possessing excellent teaching abilities, Mr. Christensen is active in service. He readily volunteers for committee work within the College of Education and the university, as well as within the community. He has served on numerous accreditation committees, the travel committee, the scholarship committee, several search committees, as well as a substitute for the appeals committee. He has also been a member of the University Curriculum Committee.

Outside of the university, he actively volunteers in the community. He serves on the Board of Directors for the Yellowstone Valley Food Hub, as well as the Board of Directors Young Families Early Head Start. He also served on the Board for the Montana State Reading Association, and he regularly volunteers in schools.

Finally, Mr. Christensen is a highly valued colleague. He actively contributes to the community within the College of Education and is extremely supportive of his colleagues and truly lives out his mantra of “education is relationships” with everyone with whom he comes into contact.

For these and other contributions, the Board of Regents of Higher Education is pleased to confer upon Mr. Alan Christensen the rank of Lecturer Emeritus of Educational Theory and Practice at Montana State University Billings.

pon the occasion of the retirement of Dr. Cheryl A. Young-Pelton from the College of Education at Montana State University Billings, the Board of Regents wishes to express its appreciation for her service to the University and the Montana University System.

EXPLANATION

D

r. Young-Pelton earned her B.S. degree in Music from Illinois State University in 1980, a M.Ed. in Educational Leadership from the University of South Florida in 1991 and an Ed.D. in Education, Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Central Florida in 2005.

She taught in public schools in Florida for twenty- two years before taking a position at the University of Nebraska Kearney as an Assistant Professor in 2005. In 2008 she joined the faculty in the Department of Educational Theory and Practice where her teaching, scholarship and service eventually merited her becoming a full Professor.

Dr. Young-Pelton holds a Behavior Analyst doctoral certification from the Association for Behavior Analysis International (ABAI) and a Behavior Analysis License from the Montana Board of Psychologists. At Montana State University-Billings she developed a Master’s degree program in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) in the College of Education. This program has attracted students from across the United States and abroad. Initially she developed and taught all the courses in the ABA program, supervised all student internships and chaired all the thesis committees. Dr. Young-Pelton led the College of Education’s application for accreditation from the ABAI Accreditation Board, and the program became accredited in 2019. Dr. YoungPelton has published numerous articles in academic journals and has been an invited speaker at national and regional conferences. In addition, she has mentored graduate students to publish and present with her.

Dr. Young-Pelton’s service to the University and the College of Education has included membership of several committees, including chairing the University Graduate committee, cochairing the University Neurodiversity committee and the College of Education Department Rank and Tenure committee. Her service to the State of Montana has included working with the Office of Public Instruction to provide consultation services to schools across the state where teachers needed support in working with students with challenging behaviors.

In 2021 Dr. Young-Pelton was awarded a Faculty Excellence award for her teaching, scholarship and service contributions to the University and the State of Montana.

For these and other contributions, the Board of Regents of Higher Education is pleased to confer on Dr. Cheryl A. Young-Pelton the rank of Professor Emerita of Educational Theory and Practice at Montana State University Billings and wishes her well for many years in the future.
