LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
We acknowledge and honor, with respect, the Indigenous Nations on whose traditional homelands Montana State University Billings now stands and whose historical and cultural relationships with the land continue to this day. Many Indigenous peoples thrive in this place — alive and strong.
THE ACADEMIC PROCESSION
The tradition of the academic procession and academic apparel goes back to the early days of the oldest European universities, where gowns and hoods began to be required in the fourteenth century. Although European institutions continue to show great diversity in their specifications on academic apparel, current practices in this country follow the code established by the American Council on Education.
Academic apparel indicates the most advanced degree held by the wearer. Gowns for the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees are distinguished by the variation in sleeve length and by the width of the edging. The color of the edging of the hood indicates the subject of the degree (e.g., white for arts, yellow for science, light blue for education, dark blue for philosophy) and the colors of the lining of the hood indicate the institution from which the degree was received. For Montana State University Billings the colors are blue and gold. Apparel for the doctoral degree is distinguished by the panels on the sides of the hood, the gold tassel on the cap, and the velvet trim on the gown.
Montana State University Billings’ baccalaureate candidates who have excelled academically wear honor cords. Gold honor cords (signifying summa cum laude) distinguish graduating seniors who have attained a grade point average of 4.0. Gold and silver entwined honor cords (signifying magna cum laude) distinguish graduating seniors who have attained a grade point average between 3.75-3.99. Silver honor cords (signifying cum laude) distinguish graduating seniors who have attained a grade point average between 3.50 and 3.74. Blue and white entwined honor cords (signifying high honors, 3.75-4.0, and honors, 3.50-3.74) distinguish recipients of Associate degrees and Certificates. Honors designations are based on the cumulative grade point average which includes graded transfer work from other institutions.
The marching order for the Montana State University Billings academic procession is as follows: grand marshal, emeritus faculty, faculty, candidates for academic degrees, platform party.

Nova Rosman
Nova Rosman’s tenure at Montana State University Billings can be summed up by experiencing success in two places: Indoors and outdoors.
Nova was honored with the Outstanding Undergraduate Student Leadership Award in April as this year’s top graduating senior. Like many of her fellow graduates, she was challenged academically, learning more than she thought possible. But she also found out that she loved teaching as much as she did learning.
A native of Shepherd, it all started when she joined the rejuvenated Yellowjacket cheer/stunt team as a freshman in 2022. She became captain, organizing the squad to be focused and to perform at their best during games. Slight in stature and bold in spirit, her position on the roster is designate as “flyer,” doing perfectly timed twists and turns for mid-air routines. On the ground, she embraced the teaching.
“Whenever I helped someone do a crazy basket catch, I thought to myself, ‘I helped them do that!’ and I felt genuinely good,” she said.
Academically, Nova connected her love of the outdoors with the Outdoor Adventure Leadership program. Her professors noted how she handled herself with professionalism and offered encouragement to fellow students. She served as a teaching assistant on real-world projects and interned at KOA navigating a partnership between KOA and Leave No Trace, the environmental sustainability movement. In the fall of 2025, Nova was among 14 Montana college students recognized by the Montana Campus Network for Civic Engagement for volunteer work.
Starting this summer, Nova will be doing marketing work for Camp Ocean Pines, an overnight summer camp for youth.
New Professor Emeritus
Dr. Bernard Quetchenbach
Dr. Bernard Quetchenbach
Professor Emeritus of English
Following the retirement of Dr. Bernard Quetchenbach from Montana State University Billings after 18 years of service, the Board of Regents wishes to express its appreciation for his service to Montana State University Billings, the city of Billings, the Montana University System, and the State of Montana.
EXPLANATION
Dr. Bernard Quetchenbach was a member of the English, Philosophy, and Modern Languages Department from 2006 to 2024, teaching courses in literature, creative writing, and other areas of the discipline for majors and minors in English and for the general education program. In his classes, he combined best practices in community-based learning, civic engagement, field application, engaging students intellectually, challenging them with a broad vision of literature, and providing opportunities for students to become active community members. He invited guest speakers from the community and as far away as the Amazon forest in Peru so that they could provide diverse/multicultural viewpoints to broaden students’ perspectives and understanding of complex issues. In two instances, he took students from his Environmental Vision course, as well as other students, to Iquitos, Peru where they experienced diverse and multicultural perspectives.
With degrees from SUNY-Brockport and Purdue University, Dr. Quetchenbach is a prolific scholar- researcher and author. He has published ten books, over 80 articles and essays in periodicals, anthologies, and collections; has had his poetry appear in over 70 periodicals, anthologies and collections; has been a co- editor, editorial Board member, reviewer and reader for 22 different publications; and has presented his work in over 80 professional forums. He has earned several grants to support his work in the Amazon forest along with other research interests and been the recipient of several honors and awards that include a Faculty Excellence Award, the O. Marvin Lewis Essay Award, and two Listed Notable Essays.
Much of Dr. Quetchenbach’s teaching and research has focused on the stories we tell that help shape the world in which we live and are often used as a means of discovering our place as individuals in cultures that exist within the wider world we inhabit. His emphasis on how stories help shape the human experience in natural environments has resulted in research and publications that inform his classroom teaching. Students in his courses learn how stories told by Indigenous people in both Montana and Amazonia have adapted to today’s rapidly changing conditions. This connection between disparate parts of our world offers a further benefit: they shine a light on Montana and its connections to the Amazon.
For these and other contributions, the Board of Regents of Higher Education is pleased to confer upon Dr. Bernard Quetchenbach the rank of Professor Emeritus of English at Montana State University Billings and wishes him well for many years into the future.
