M State and its faculty and staff are deeply committed to contributing to the needs of our 21st century students and communities despite the challenge of tight resources and the increasing demand for accountability. And although we have made great progress, we still have much to complete and to improve if we are to be the driver of change and excellence in our service area. M State is de initely up to the challenge! These are the stories that share the achievements of students who overcome tremendous odds to complete their education and enter promising careers with a future; stories about students who transfer to a university to continue their education; and stories of businesses and organizations that support the college in numerous ways.

How sweet it is M State and American Crystal Sugar team up for training

During a three-week stretch in July, nearly two dozen members of American Crystal Sugar Company’s maintenance and processing crews gathered in an unlikely setting: the diesel lab at Minnesota State Community and Technical College in Moorhead.

They weren’t there to talk about sugar or diesel engines. They were there to learn skills in industrial maintenance, thanks to a blossoming partnership between American Crystal and M State’s Custom Training Services.

The partnership began about three years ago when G.L. Tucker approached American Crystal Training Manager Donny Wisk to

discuss whether CTS could assist with any of American Crystal’s training needs. As dean of CTS, Tucker regularly works to arrange skills and technology training for businesses and industries throughout the M State region.

Talk between Tucker and Wisk turned to American Crystal’s need to provide maintenance skills to some of the technicians who work in sugar production from September through May. “We teach sugar manufacturing to our technicians, and we do that extremely well,” Wisk said. “Where we had a need was with some other technical skill sets, and that’s where we started working with

M State.”

Each spring after the beet slicing campaign is completed, American Crystal enters into an extensive maintenance period to prepare its plants for the next processing season. American Crystal requires additional maintenance employees during this spring/summer outage, so American Crystal and CTS collaborated to develop the 120-hour Mechanical Skills Enhancement Training course so more production employees could help ill a portion of that need.

The irst training sessions were in 2013, and two three-week sessions were held in June and July of this year for about 100 employees from American Crystal’s plants in Moorhead, East Grand Forks, Crookston and the North Dakota communities of Hillsboro and Drayton. In addition to the training on M State’s Moorhead campus, CTS operated a second American Crystal training site on the East Grand Forks campus of Northland Community & Technical College.

The American Crystal maintenance courses are taught by M State instructors, industry experts brought in by CTS and American Crystal trainers – a standard sort of arrangement for CTS training.

“By utilizing our instructors and industry experts, we can cover pretty much any type of training that’s needed,” Tucker said. “CTS really can become your one-stop shop for training.”

The Custom Training Services division at Minnesota State Community and Technical College provided nearly 95,000 hours of training to 5,450 students, including 13,000 hours of fire service training for volunteer fire departments, during the 201314 fiscal year.

Most of the training was in the region surrounding M State’s campuses in Detroit Lakes, Fergus Falls, Moorhead and Wadena, but CTS has been involved in statewide training projects for Charter Communica ons and the Minnesota Department of Transporta on, and in southwestern Minnesota for Schwann’s.

Meeting the region’s needs New, revitalized M State programs serve students, employers Minnesota State Community and Technical College is creating several new programs and revitalizing others during the 2014-15 academic year to better serve students and respond to the needs of employers in the region.

M State’s faculty and advisory groups provide the college with regular feedback about the skills of its graduates, the skills required for job vacancies and upcoming industry trends, said Chief Academic Of icer Carrie Brimhall.

“The new and redesigned programs help us meet regional workforce and transfer needs,” Brimhall said. “As a community and technical college it’s our mission to make curriculum changes and create new programs when we can document an unmet need in our region.”

Associate in Science in Business: This is a transfer degree program designed for students who intend to pursue a four-year business-related degree. It’s offered on M State’s campuses in Fergus Falls and Moorhead and through eCampus; there is an articulation agreement that allows seamless transfer to Minnesota State University Moorhead.

Associate in Applied Science degree and certi icate in Business Administration: Both the degree and certi icate are intended for students who want to enter the business ield in two years or less and are offered on the Fergus Falls campus. The AAS degree has

Chemistry The AS in Chemistry is being offered on the Fergus Falls and Moorhead campuses in response to requests from students enrolled in science courses.

The 60-credit transfer degree is designed for students planning to earn a four-year chemistry degree and pursue careers including lab research, forensic science, chemical engineering, medicine, health

sciences, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and food science.

“The career paths for chemistry majors are practically endless,” said Henrickson.

The sequential chemistry, math and physics courses in the Chemistry AS will transfer to a bachelor’s degree program in chemistry or chemistryrelated programs at many four-year colleges and universities, Henrickson said. The two-year degree also prepares graduates to work as chemistry technicians in ields such as biofuels.

Gas U lity Construc on and Service A diploma program in Gas Utility Construction Service is being explored to ill a need in the energy industry, said Monty Johnson, senior dean on the Wadena campus.

Through conversations with private industry representatives on the Minnesota Energy Consortium (where he’s a member), Johnson learned that there have been no gas industry training programs in Minnesota or North Dakota technical colleges. The need was reinforced during a consortium presentation by a pipeline contractor who started a similar diploma program at a Wisconsin college.

A 32-credit diploma program is currently targeted to begin in the summer of 2015 on the Wadena campus, with a maximum enrollment of 24.

The program is being designed to train students in the installation, maintenance and operation of both high- and low-pressure natural gas distribution systems that supply residential, com-

mercial and industrial customers. Johnson said graduates could ind jobs with companies ranging from local energy cooperatives and businesses to giant high-pressure gas distribution systems.

“We’re expecting to ind a niche within the oil industry,” Johnson said.

The gas utility industry is experiencing a problem similar to one in the electrical lineworker ield: Demand for new workers is expected to be high as large numbers of current workers reach retirement age. M State also offers an electrical lineworker program in Wadena and at a training site in Baudette, in northern Minnesota.

Informa on Technology A total of 17 information technology programs were reviewed and revised in response to changing needs in the computer and technology ields.

“The changes were designed to support and improve student access, persistence and success,” said Tom Whelihan, dean of academics on the Detroit Lakes campus. “The revised IT offerings re lect industry demands and needs, thus better preparing students for the workplace upon graduation.”

Revising programs to meet industry needs “also makes the program selection process more student-friendly and ensures that students make the best possible choices to match their skills and interests,” he added.

Information Technology AS and AAS: The AS degree program is offered in Moorhead, and the AAS is offered in Detroit Lakes and through eCampus. Both programs prepare students to work in information technology; the AS is designed for students who plan to enroll in a bachelor’s degree program after leaving M State.

M State begins offering a 60-credit AAS degree in Surgical Technology on the Moorhead campus in the spring of 2015 in response to a request by regional health care provider Sanford Health. The four-semester, 60-credit program will prepare students to work as part of the medical team that cares for parents before, during and after surgery.

Management Information Systems AS: The degree, available on the Fergus Falls campus, is designed for students who plan to pursue a business career in the ield of computer information management systems. It’s intended both for students who plan to enter the workforce after graduation and for those whose goal is a four-year degree.

“With its planned expansions, Sanford anticipates an increased need for surgical technicians,” said Jennifer Jacobson, M State’s dean of health careers.

“Sanford approached M State and asked us to start the program to meet their growing need for medical professionals.”

Network Administration and Security AAS and certi icate: The AAS, available in Moorhead and Wadena, teaches the skills to support and maintain computer network systems in business environments. The Network Security certi icate also focuses on business computer network systems and is offered in Detroit Lakes, Moorhead and through eCampus.

Graduates will be quali ied for entrylevel positions assisting physicians, anesthesiologists and registered nurses throughout the perioperative process and will be eligible to sit for the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting Certi ied Surgical Technologist examination.

Web Development AAS and certi icate: Both are taught in Detroit Lakes and through eCampus and focus on teaching the technical and creative skills to create customer-friendly websites and applications.

Computer Programming AAS: The degree, offered in Moorhead and through eCampus, prepares students to design and develop computer software and information management systems.

“The demand in the Fargo-Moorhead area is large,” Jacobson said, “and with both Essentia Health and Sanford Heath expanding their surgical services, it will mean an expanding job market.”

Nursing options Prac cal nursing diploma shortened to one-year program Revisions in its Practical Nursing program mean that PN students will be able to earn a diploma at Minnesota State Community and Technical College and enter the workforce in only one year.

“M State is pleased that it can respond both to the needs of students who want to complete their education and begin working as nurses as quickly as possible, and the critical ongoing need of hospitals and long-term care facilities for additional practical nurses,” said M State Director of Nursing Tracy Morstad.

Beginning in the fall of 2015, M State will offer a 40-credit, twosemester PN diploma on all four of its campuses in Detroit Lakes, Fergus Falls, Moorhead and Wadena.

Students will be eligible to take the national PN licensing exam following graduation.

The 40-credit diploma program replaces M State’s 48-credit, three-semester PN diploma and the 60-credit Associate in Applied Science PN degree.

As part of the revised diploma program, Morstad said M State PN students no longer will be required to complete the 75-hour Nursing Assistant course as a prerequisite. Instead, the skills that had been taught in the course will be incorporated into the nursing curriculum for PN students.

“Hospitals and nursing homes need PN graduates to get into the workforce more quickly,” said Morstad, adding that the industry is experiencing a crisis with the national shortage of the practical nurses who, under the supervision of registered nurses and physicians, are responsible for providing much of the direct hands-on patient care in health care facilities.

In order to reach the new 40-credit goal, Morstad said the faculty “took a critical look at the general education courses, determining which were absolutely necessary to support the PN curriculum and then eliminated those that were not.” There will, however, still be required general education courses in English composition, developmental psychology and anatomy and physiology. In addition to the nursing theory, clinical application continues to be an important component of the shortened program.

Morstad said the shorter diploma program should appeal to current high school students who prefer to enter immediately into a nursing program following graduation – since there are no longer CNA or general education prerequisites – as well as non-traditional students who desire a quicker path to a career

M State will continue to offer the Associate Degree in Nursing programs on its campuses for students interested in pursuing a professional nursing degree. The 64-credit Generic Option is a twoyear program for students with no prior nursing experience, and the Advanced Standing track is designed for LPNs seeking to advance their degrees and sit for the national RN licensing exam.

M State graduates 200-300 students each year through its nursing programs.

M State helps students find the right career Three years ago, instructors at Minnesota State Community and Technical College gathered for a conversation about ways to better serve students.

Anthony Schaf hauser, the college’s dean of student access, said instructors observed that it seemed many students were dropping out of college because they’d chosen a major or program without a clear career goal or an understanding of the jobs they’d be prepared for.

Not long after, the college initiated

a project that involved contacting students who had enrolled at M State during the past three years but hadn’t completed a degree or program. Asked why they left college, Schaf hauser said some cited inancial issues, the dif iculty of balancing work and school and military deployments. Many others talked about the uncertainty of their education goals and a lack of commitment to their major.

“There were a lot who said, ‘I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do,’” Schaf hauser said. “And it hit us that we could do something

The combination of faculty suggestions and comments by former students led M State to link with Career Coach, which Schaf hauser describes as “a free online career search tool that will help you ind a good career in a ield that interests you.”

The data displayed on the Career Coach website includes current job postings, current local wages, local employment numbers, anticipated job growth in different careers, and degrees that will provide the training required for varied careers. Schaf hauser said data is compiled from numerous sources including the Census Bureau, the Bureau of Labor Statistics and state salary surveys.

“It pulls together all the relevant information,” he said.

The service is funded with federal dollars that are distributed to states to address career and technical education

needs. Its use is not limited to M State students and graduates: It can be used by anyone exploring careers and job openings within a 100mile radius of any of M State’s four campuses.

In a recent three-month period, the M State website was used to initiate more than 1,200 career searches. The ive careers that were searched most often were registered nurse, radiologic technologist, veterinarian, computer system analyst and medical record/health information technician.

Career Coach also is part of a larger M State initiative focused on helping students choose high-demand careers that match their interests and skills.

The college regularly sponsors Career Exploration Workshops in all four campus communities. The workshops are open to all community members who are interested in career options or enrolling in college – either M State or another institution.

Using the example of the nursing student who is squeamish about the sight of blood, Schaf hauser said M State’s counselors work with individuals at the Career Exploration Workshops to help them gauge their interest in and aptitude for various care careers.

Making connections Internships give students valuable on-the-job experience Internships provide hundreds of students at Minnesota State Community and Technical College with the opportunity to put their classroom learning to work each year – and, at the same time, develop contacts in the ields where they want to work and beef up their job resumes.

“M State has more than 300 business and industry leaders who advise our academic programs on a regular basis,” said Carrie Brimhall, M State’s vice president of academic affairs. “We consistently hear about the importance of industry connections and experiential learning early in a student’s academic program.

“Internships are no longer an end-of-program experience — we support students connecting with business and industry as early (and as often) as possible.”

Four M State current students and graduates re lect on the boost that internships have given to their careers and goals in life:

Mariah Muer Sign Language Interpreter Prepara on Mariah Muer’s interest in languages and entrepreneurship led her to M State’s American Sign

Language programs — and eventually, she hopes, to a career that combines both.

Muer already had completed the two-year business entrepreneurship degree on M State’s Detroit Lakes campus and was considering how she could merge her business skills and her fascination with languages when she learned about the ASL programs on M State’s Moorhead campus.

She irst completed the one-year American Sign Language Studies certi icate, then graduated in the spring of 2014 with an Associate in Applied Science degree in Sign Language Interpreter Preparation.

As part of the program, Muer completed an internship with the private interpreting services provider CIC, Inc., spending 270 hours of sign language interpreting in college courses, middle school classrooms, business meetings and even a children’s theater production.

“It de initely gives you a feel of what to be prepared for and my ability to interpret in the community,” Muer said of her internship.

“A lot of things you do in the ield are different than what you imagine when you’re in the classroom. I de initely enjoyed the internship.”

in the Sign Language Interpreter Preparation program are employed by school districts in the area, Muer is working toward her National Interpreter Certi ication with the goal of starting her own business as a freelance interpreter in the Fargo-Moorhead area.

Elaine Wiggins Health Informa on Technology Elaine Wiggins was working as a medical records clerk in a Duluth health care facility when she began researching her options for an affordable, accredited health information technology program that she could complete online.

“I was working as a medical records clerk … and wanted to move into a more professional career with potential to move up the ladder,” Wiggins said.

She enrolled in M State’s online Health Information Technology program and, as part of the course requirements, completed two internships at health care facilities in Duluth. The irst gave her an overview of the entire health information system, and the second – a coding-intensive experience with hands-on training in an ambulatory coding department – was especially valuable.

“I was able to ask lots of questions and really get a good idea of whether this was something I wanted to pursue,” Wiggins said.

“I also made important connections and contacts with potential future employers and gave them a chance to see my talents and capabilities.

Equine Science When she was growing up in the Twin Cities, Haley Sell said, “the biggest animal I had was a cat.”

But at age 13 she developed a passion for horses, and that enthusiasm led her to M State’s Equine

Science program. She brie ly considered going to culinary school, Sell said, “but I didn’t want to spend all day inside working with people.”

Sell visited the equine program at a different state college, but a tour of the Fergus Falls campus and its student housing and a visit with equine program director Dr. Tom Prieve immediately convinced her to enroll in M State.

“The second I got back in the car (after the visit), I told my mom, ‘I want to go here,’” Sell said.

During the second year of the program, Sell began a four-month internship at LRS Performance Horses in Rice Lake, Wis., a facil-

ity that boards, breeds and trains horses. She worked as a barn manager for the 40-horse operation – cleaning stalls and warming up, exercising and feeding horses.

She also showed a horse for the irst time and learned to rope.

“I was surprised how much trust they put in me,” Sell said. “I didn’t realize how much it takes to run a barn by yourself. You can’t beat the experience of doing an internship – I’d recommend it to anyone.”

Sell worked this past summer as a trail riding guide in western South Dakota and is both completing her Equine Science degree and working toward a business major so she’s prepared to own and manage her own horse barn after graduation.

Blake Wiedmann Graphic Design Technology Graphic design is a competitive ield, and Blake Wiedmann learned that competitiveness extends to internships in the profession, as well.

Wiedmann was a irst-year Graphic Design Technology student in Moorhead in the spring of 2014 when he was chosen for a summer internship in a competition – called the Intern-O Inferno – by Fargo advertising agency H2M. Seven prospective interns had 48 hours to complete an ad for one of the company’s clients and then sell it to H2M employees in a series of rapid- ire interviews.

“My experience with H2M de initely reinforced my decision to be a graphic designer,” Wiedmann said, adding that he was inspired by the

creative atmosphere at the agency.

“Surprisingly, I was given almost the same amount of responsibility as the other designers there.

It was remarkable,” he said. “I got to participate in designing everything from logos to newspaper ads. It was dif icult to keep up at irst – the skill of their team was very impressive – but I eventually got into the swing of things and did some work that I can say I’m proud of.

“I never felt like I was working there, just doing what I love to do.”

Wiedmann credits his M State instructors for providing him with the skills that allowed him to compete for and succeed at the internship. His goal is to work as a freelance graphic designer after he completes his second year in the AAS program on the Moorhead campus, or to put his skills to work at an ad agency such as H2M.

Rad Tech expands options Students can complete clinical hours at Level 1 trauma center A new partnership is providing valuable learning experiences for Radiographic Technology students at Minnesota State Community and Technical College.

Students in the program can now complete more than 60 of their required clinical hours at Hennepin County Medical Center, a Level I trauma center that delivers the most comprehensive level of emergency medical services available to adults and children with traumatic injuries.

Radiologic Technology Director Colleen Brady-Santwire said M State previously had an arrangement that allowed students to observe at HCMC. Since the 2013-14 academic year, though, students can do a fourweek stint of rotations at HCMC in downtown Minneapolis.

“We don’t have a Level I trauma center in our region,” BradySantwire said. “For our students to have the opportunity to be exposed to Level 1 trauma services and to be there in a clinical capacity is huge. It gives the students experience with a larger variety of patient and exam types, and a higher volume of patient and exam types.”

Students in M State’s Radiographic Technology program – offered online and on the Detroit Lakes campus – are required to complete about 1,500 hours of clinical assignments as part of their

coursework for the Associate in Applied Science degree. The college partners with nearly two dozen health facilities in Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota for clinical sites.

“Our program is af iliated primarily with rural health care facilities – which provide our students with an important education that’s transferable to a facility of any size,” Brady-Santwire said. “But especially for students who want to work in an urban facility, HCMC offers … one more learning opportunity.”

Radiologic Technology program graduate Daniel Marsolek, who is working on certi ication in industrial radiography, appreciated the opportunity to get hands-on experience handling trauma cases at one of the nation’s largest trauma centers.

“At HCMC they have state-of-the art equipment that you don’t see

at other sites,” Marsolek said.

“Their emergency department is huge and gives you the chance to see things that you could never see at other facilities.”

Fellow 2014 program graduate Leah Jurmu, who is now working in the radiology department at the Park Rapids hospital, said her experience at HCMC was “very valuable.”

“I was able to see things that I wouldn’t have seen anywhere else,” she said. “It also made me realize that I would rather work in a hospital setting rather than a clinic setting because the work is so much more varied.”

The location for M State’s Radiologic Technology program start alternates each year between Detroit Lakes and eCampus. Admission is selective, with more than 100 students applying each year for the program’s 16 seats.

Financial aid M State awarded $3.4 million in grants Minnesota State Community and Technical College learned this fall that it has been awarded nearly $3.4 million in grants, including $2.5 million in federal job training funds for the “CU Succeed” program which will help train 450 residents of west central Minnesota for in-demand careers in the construction and utilities industries.

M State also is a partner in a $15 million grant which was awarded to the Minnesota Advanced Manufacturing Partnership, a consortium of 13 campuses in the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system with the goal of training workers in advanced manufacturing program.

Both CU Succeed and the manufacturing partnership were awarded funds through the federal Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training program. The grants are part of a four-year federal initiative to expand targeted training programs for workers by supporting and expanding partnerships between community colleges and employers.

CU Succeed will provide training and certi ications over three years in west central Minnesota using mobile training units, online workplace readiness and soft skills instruction, and workplace experiences.

“M State is delighted to receive a $2.5 million TAACCCT grant for our CU Succeed program and to partner with a dozen other MnSCU campuses on the $15 million grant for manufacturing education,” M State President Peggy Kennedy said at the time of the grant’s announcement. “We are pleased that M State and its business partners have this opportunity to play a valuable role in providing workers with the skills they need to adapt to changing conditions and succeed in the workplace.”

South Central College in North Mankato is the lead college in the manufacturing partnership, which applied for the $15 million grant. M State is scheduled to receive $425,000 through the manufacturing consortium.

Strategic Preven on Framework Partnerships for Success grant M State will receive between $500,000 and $750,000 annually in federal funds over ive years to address underage drinking and drug abuse on its campuses in Fergus Falls and Moorhead. Funding comes through the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration’s Strategic Prevention Framework Partnerships for Success.

The college was invited to participate by the Minnesota Department of Human Services because of its past collaboration in an annual student health survey conducted by Boynton Health Services at the University of Minnesota. The SPF PFS grant will fund a variety of substance abuse prevention programs at M State and across the state.

O o Bremer Founda on Finish Line Grant M State’s Moorhead campus will receive $200,000 as part of an Otto Bremer Foundation scholarship program of up to $4 million. The college’s one-year renewable grant will fund scholarships to support persistence and completion of educational goals and a success coach to work directly with scholarship recipients.

The Finish Line Grant is designed to help underrepresented students complete their certi icate and degree programs. It targets students who face inancial, academic and other struggles as they try to reach their educational goals.

Alumni share M State mission Preparing learners for dynamic living, working and serving This is the second in a series featuring alumni of Minnesota State Community and Technical College who continue to contribute signiϔicantly to the college through their jobs on our campuses.

A month hb before f Jackie k Hoban graduated in 1978 with a General Secretary diploma, she was recommended by an instructor for a secretarial position in the inancial aid department. She subsequently worked as assistant to the college’s president and then in the academic affairs of ice. “If anyone would have asked me if I thought I would continue working in

one place that long, I would have told them no. Many, many changes have taken place, but it’s always been a great place to work. The college provides students training for employment and contributes greatly to the economy of the area.”

Bryan Christensen, a member of the business faculty and director of Business & Entrepreneurial Services, earned a degree in Computer and Networking in ’03. “This was a great stepping stone in order to complete my bachelor’s degree in management. Having completed an AAS helps me relate and understand what my students are going through in their education.”

He is a 1996 graduate of that same program and the program now known as PowerSports Technology. He subsequently earned a bachelor’s degree in vocational education from Bemidji State University in 2005. He is one of only two technical college marine instructors in the nation to receive the Evinrude certi ied technician award and is also the national Lund boat training instructor “All this has been a great career choice. I get to train individuals who have the drive to work on marine products. I get to see former students at various seminars, at dealerships and on the street.

Onnalee Miller Krump graduated from the Fergus Falls campus in 1995 with an associate’s degree in accounting and has been employed by the college since 1998 in the payroll department. She enjoys working with her coworkers and the challenge of processing payroll for eight institutions in the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system.

Michelle Jenson just began her 26th year in

the registrar’s of ice of the Moorhead campus.

She graduated with her liberal arts degree from M State in May 2008 and inished her bachelor’s degree at Mayville State University this spring. Over the years she had watched the students continue their education and decided it was time for her to do the same.

While she continues to

enjoy every day with the students and her co-workers at M State, she has begun taking online courses through Luther Seminary in St. Paul in pursuit of her master’s degree in divinity, with the ultimate goal of becoming a Lutheran minister in the ELCA. “Although there will come a time that I will bid farewell to this amazing school,

there will never be a time that I will not feel proud for the students I have helped along their journey and the friendships and successes that I have obtained with all the amazing faculty and staff who work here!”

1980s Becky (Halvorson) Sonmor, ’83, (Fergus Falls, AA in music) owns and operates A Note Above … the Rebecca Sonmor Voice Studio in Fergus Falls. She also directs a children’s choir and serves as music director for A Center for the Arts summer musicals and co-directs the annual Razzle Dazzle Revue.

Tom Bolgrean, ’84, (Moorhead, Mechanical Dra ing and Design) serves as president of Branick Industries, a Fargo company which manufactures automo ve tools and equipment and has been a leader in the re and automo ve industry since its incep on in 1917.

there can be 8-25 sleds that need mechanical attention, depending on the number of riders and the races they are participating in.

Betsy’s responsibilities include ordering parts, decaling, oversight of the mechanic shop and y to ensuringg machines are ready race, and she inds herself traveling across the world working on snowmobiles in premier tailored trailers designed to serve as mechanic service shops.

“Indescribable” is the way Betsy relates her experiences in locations ranging from Minnesota, Michigan, New York and Canada to Finland and Sweden. The biggest non-circuit race is the Winter X-Games, an annual ESPN sports event in Aspen, Colo.

Asked about the challenging aspects of her job, she hesitates and then replies, “I just enjoy it so much ... the major breakdowns. Finding enough time under extremely tight deadlines to get back operating again … and keeping up with advancing technology.”

Arctic Cat spokesman Kale Wainer said that racing has been a

All in the family Anderson follows M State tradi on When 12 members of your family chose Minnesota State Community and Technical College for their college education, you would be a fool not to listen to them. That is exactly what Kelly (Martin) Anderson did.

Kelly’s parents both attended what was then Fergus Falls Community College, along with a sister and numerous other relatives.

“I heard such positive things about the education I would receive there,” Kelly said. “I remember my dad telling me that the only regret he had about attending (M State) was that he wished it were a four-

year school because he enjoyed it so much. I shared that sentiment after my two years there.”

Kelly, who grew up in Morris and moved to Hawley for her senior year of high school, has fond memories of her time on campus.

She was elated to have the opportunity to play basketball for the legendary Ann Williams and recalls that she and her teammates “would arrive long before practice started and linger afterward just to visit with Coach Williams, as she was such a kind-hearted, down-to-earth coach who had the ability to bring out the best in each one of us.”

Kelly was fortunate to receive a scholarship from Fergus Area College Foundation both years she attended M State, and without FACF there might not be a Kelly Anderson, dean of students and activities director at Ada-Borup School.

The foundation also made it possible for her Spartan women’s basketball team to travel to Corning, N.Y., where the team won the national title in 2001.

Kelly is grateful for the genuine caring that M State staff showed toward the students and for her wonderful professors. Two who really stood out were Arlin Nikolas and Anthony Miltich.

Nikolas’ “ability to tell stories is uncanny,” she recalled. “When the end of the (class) hour came I just hated it because I yearned to

hear more. (Not many teachers) could rival his kind of passion and knowledge of the material and ability to share stories.”

English was not her strong suit and she had little con idence when it came to her ability to write, Kelly admits, but she said that Miltich was “able to reach down and grab whatever talents I had in that area and bring them to the forefront, and for that I am forever grateful.”

After graduating from M State, Kelly continued her basketball career and participated in track at Valley City State, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education. She became assistant women’s basketball coach for three years at Minnesota State University Moorhead and earned her master’s degree in education there.

At Ulen-Hitterdal School, Kelly taught health and physical education in addition to coaching boys’ basketball and track while she worked on her K-12 principal license, and for the past three years she has served as the dean of students and activities director at Ada-Borup School. She also is inishing her superintendent’s licensure.

Kelly and her husband, Nate, have two children – Tucker, 6, and Quinn, 1 – with another due in December. Kelly said she’s fortunate to have a supportive husband and extended family in the area who allow her to “get some ‘me’ time every once in a while!”

Larson welcomes chance to make a difference at M state Lori Larson assumed her duties as the executive director of Fergus Area College Foundation on the Fergus Falls campus of Minnesota State Community and Technical College in July of this year.

“I’m excited about leading the continued efforts of the foundation in making positive differences in the lives of students, donors and the communities we serve,” said Larson, who is a 1994 alumni of the Fergus Falls campus.

Larson is a familiar face in the Fergus Falls area. She previously was involved in marketing and nonpro it work as community and public relations director of Lake Region Healthcare in Fergus Falls and general manager of the Fergus Falls Daily Journal.

Larson said there is strong community support for the college, and she hopes relationships she already has will continue on in her new role. “I know the

community will continue to get behind the college,” she said.

The foundation has been providing a solid legacy of support for the Fergus Falls campus for more than 50 years. Each year it awards over $150,000 in scholarships to more than 100 students and also provides funds for faculty/ staff grants and campus enhancement programs.

A new foundation priority is strengthening relationships with alumni. “We want them to be part of our campus, and there are many opportunities for them to reconnect with us,” said Larson. “It might be in volunteering their time or perhaps with a gift. Maybe it’s allowing us to tell their stories.”

Foundation president shares special bond with college As the daughter of an instructor at Minnesota State Community and Technical College, Gail Childs’ earliest memories of the college were attending plays and musical events at the Waage Theatre.

“It was magical when the curtain lifted, and we were taken to another time or world by the actors and scenery,” said Childs, now the president of Fergus Area College Foundation.

She felt special because she and her siblings were able to spend the intermission in the of ice of her father, Ken Peeders, which she now jokes was “probably a clever ploy on the part of my parents to get four energetic kids out of the hallway of playgoers.”

She attended the Fergus Falls campus during her freshman year, then transferred to a four-year institution to complete her bachelor’s degree. “The

education I received at what was then Fergus Falls Community College was every bit as challenging as what followed at my four-year college,” Childs said.

As a business woman in the Fergus Falls area, Childs sees how the college has trained and educated many of the area’s best citizens. As president of the foundation, Childs looks forward to the coming years as the organization continues to provide scholarships and resources to the Fergus Falls campus.

“Donors, through Fergus Area College Foundation, are giving the gift of opportunity to students,” Childs said.

M State Transportation Center Revving up for an overhaul to meet industry demands From the ox cart trails to the laying of the rails to the building of the interstate highways, transportation has been central to the economic development of the Red River Valley. Building on this long tradition, the Minnesota Legislature last year approved a long-awaited expansion of the facilities that house the Automotive and Diesel Technology programs on the Moorhead campus of Minnesota State Community and Technical College.

This nearly $7 million expansion will allow M State to continue its tradition of training highly skilled workers for companies across the area by relieving congestion in the transportation program labs, expanding enrollment and allowing for new technologies and an improved learning environment.

In addition to the building of 23,000 square feet of new labs and classrooms for the Diesel Technology program, the project will include complete renovations of another 23,000 square feet of existing space to allow for an expanded Automotive Technology program. The auto program will move one of its current labs into a former diesel lab and use the opportunity to expand the program and update its surroundings.

The transportation ield is not only growing, but evolving. The incorporation of high technology and the increasing size of modern equipment are changing the ield of transportation in both the automotive and diesel trades. The new facility will include larger bay doors with natural light features, more space for students, a more powerful overhead hoist system and improved air handling and circulation.

Both the new and renovated space also will include more and better access to computerized diagnostic machinery and digital displays.

Work on the new project began shortly after Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton signed the 2014 Capital Investment Act into law in late May.

These sessions allowed the stakeholders to put forward their ideas for a state-of-the-art facility that will serve the school and community for decades to come. From these sessions, the team will work to reine the design with a smaller group of staff, faculty and industry advisors.

Groundbreaking for the facility is planned for 2015, and the new facility will be ready for its irst class of students in the fall of 2016.

With the building facing 20th Street on the east side of campus, special consideration is being given to the look of the facility. Both faculty and administration want the new facility to highlight the work of the school, the involvement of its partners in private industry and the opportunities that exist for students to enter the highly rewarding ields of automotive and diesel technology.

Over the next few months, the staff and faculty will be reaching out to the community, private industry, alumni and others to build a facility that will not only incorporate today’s needs but will allow for expansion into the future.

Rising to new heights Program soars ars with the help of industry partners

Legacy Power Line Scholarship

In honor off their th heir la llate t father and grandfather, te grandf dfather, Don n Koranda Sr., the owners of Legacy Power Line, Inc. stepped up and offered students in our Electrical Lineworker Technology program an additional option for funding. Beginning in the fall of 2014, the Don Koranda Sr. Memorial Scholarship provides a $500 scholarship annually to a student enrolled in the lineworker program.

This scholarship was created by Jim Koranda and Shawn Koranda, the son and grandson of Don Koranda and the owners and operators of Legacy Power Line in Wadena. Legacy is an overhead power line contracting irm that serves rural electric cooperatives and municipal power companies in Minnesota, Iowa, and North and South Dakota.

Don worked at the Todd Wadena Electric Cooperative in Wadena for 39 years, starting as a laborer and working his way up through the ranks as a lineman, foreman and line staker. His hard work and dedication to the industry inspired many members of his family to follow in his footsteps. Jim (1973) and Shawn (1995) both received their education at M State and have used Don’s inspiration and their education to create a thriving business that supports the electrical lineworker industry.

Jim and Shawn give back by serving on M State’s lineworker program advisory committee and now look forward to honoring Don by supporting the next generation of lineworkers through the scholarship.

Lake Region Electric Coopera ve

As a strong industry partner, Lake Region Electric has donated a bucket truck to M State’s Electrical Lineworker program. Donations of equipment and

supplies are much needed in order to continue to grow the program and ensure that students have access to the equipment and supplies they will use on the job.

In addition to donating the bucket truck, Lake Region Electric supports M State students by offering lineworker scholarships annually, including scholarships for veterans.

Scholarship created in memory of past M State electrical lineworker instructor

Don Heins created a scholarship for lineworker program students in memory of his father, Stan Heins, an instructor at M State in the 1970s. Don’s $500 scholarship donation was matched by his employer, Dow Corning, for a total donation of $1,000. Gifts like this make it possible for lineworker students to thrive.
