Missouri Southern State University in Joplin, Mo., has signed an exclusive partnership with Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences, offering students a chance to gain early admission to KCU's new medical school in Joplin, Mo. This is the first time in more than 50 years that a new medical school location has opened in the state of Missouri. And Missouri Southern - a university offering more than 140 majors and programs - is excited to be a partner.

Imagine preparing for medical school your freshman year of college - and already knowing you've been accepted. The new Yours to Lose – Advanced Medical School Acceptance Program allows up to 25 Missouri Southern students to be admitted into KCU's new medical school at the same time they are accepted to MSSU. The students will follow MSSU’s curriculum and quality standards, which have been jointly designed by the two universities to prepare students for the rigors of medical school. In addition to the guaranteed 25 seats, up to 15 additional students may also be selected for the cohort.

The innovative Yours to Lose program – one of the first of its kind in the nation – allows students to earn a bachelor’s degree in biology from Missouri Southern in just three years.

After completing the degree and meeting all other requirements (the Medical College Admission test - MCAT - is not required), students will seamlessly begin their first year of medical school at KCU’s Joplin campus.

Complete the application for admission and pay a one-time, non-refundable fee at mssu.edu/ admissions (a paper copy may be obtained through the Admissions Office by calling 417625-9378).

ADM ISSI ON REQUIR EMENT S Applicant consideration for the Yours to Lose program is based on the following criteria: • Completion of a minimum of three years of mathematics* including algebra and trigonometry (calculus is preferred but not required).

• Completion of a minimum of three years of sciences* including biology and chemistry (physics and anatomy/ physiology courses are preferred but not required).

• Completion of four years of English/Language Arts courses*.

• Minimum GPA of 3.7 on an unweighted 4.0 scale*.

• Minimum GPA of 3.5 for math and sciences courses on an unweighted 4.0 scale*.

• Minimum ACT composite score in the high 20s, with a minimum score of 22 in math.

• Evidence of extracurricular activities, with an emphasis in community service and leadership.

• Completion of 1-2 years of coursework in foreign languages* preferred but not required.

C U R R ICULU M Once accepted into the Yours to Lose program,

students will complete a special curriculum at Missouri Southern that has been specifically designed to prepare them for the successful transition into the KCU Doctor of Osteopathy program.

The professors: The enhanced, unique curriculum includes courses taught by both MSSU and KCU faculty on topics such as medical reasoning and medical literature.

Opportunities exist for Yours to Lose students to work with current KCU medical students in medically-related environments.

The courses: Students will complete courses in math and science that provide a critical foundation for the successful completion of medical school. In addition, some general education courses such as communication, fine arts and foreign language will carry a medical theme, designed to promote knowledge and awareness of these issues.

When you're done: Upon successful completion of the curriculum, students will earn a baccalaureate degree in biology in just 3 years. Students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.5 at Missouri Southern in order to remain in the Yours to Lose program.

E X CELLEN T LEAR NING ENVIR O NMEN T Now that you're considering the Yours to Lose program as your path to medical school, let us tell you about our exciting new facilities.

The majority of your coursework will occur in Reynolds Hall, which houses Missouri Southern’s biology, environmental health, chemical and physical sciences and mathematics programs.

Reynolds is currently undergoing more than $17 million in renovations that will be complete by Fall 2017. The science facility will grow substantially with the addition of the new Jeremiah W. (Jay) Nixon Hall, which will be connected to Reynolds Hall and completed by Fall 2018.

The coursework offered in these facilities is in high demand, as it provides prerequisites for nursing and allied health students as well those interested in STEM fields. The renovations include upgrades to labs and classrooms, and the creation of state-of-the-art learning environments for students.

Another new science facility on campus is the Julio S. León Health Sciences Center, designed for students interested in the allied health fields. In addition to advanced laboratories, the facility features a human simulation center, allowing students to develop their clinical skills. And for true hands-on experience, our Ummel Technology Building features a rare human cadaver lab.

Off-campus, Joplin has two major hospital systems (several other medical systems are located within 45 minutes of the city) making it a critical medical hub in the Four-State region.

Dissection of cadavers is an integral part of the education of many health professionals.

At Missouri Southern, human bodies donated to science provide a unique, three-dimensional component for those interested in a career in medicine. The Cadaver Lab is located in the Ummel Technology Building.

The Biology and Environmental Health & Safety Department offers the BIO 475-Advanced Human Dissection course, a rare opportunity for undergraduates to not only study but also dissect human cadavers.

The cadavers come to Missouri Southern from science programs that donate willed bodies in order to educate the next generation of medical personnel.

Dissections in the Cadaver Lab at Missouri Southern allow future physicians or surgeons to directly observe the impact that cancer and other major diseases have on the body, as well as learn the shapes and texture of human organs. The practice is also key to forensic medicine when doctors attempt to determine a cause of death.

CAMPUS L IF E Missouri Southern offers a variety of housing options for students interested in living on campus.

Private-style rooms, apartment units, suites and traditional-style accommodations are available. The Quads – the new residence hall complex which opened in Fall 2015 – offers four-bedroom configurations in each of the 51 student apartments.

All residence options include cable, internet, heating and air, twin XL beds, desks and chairs. Laundry facilities are located in the Mayes Student Life Center, Blaine Hall, McCormick Hall and Stegge Hall at no charge – just bring your university ID for access. The Quads come equipped with a washer and dryer.

Students are also offered plenty of activities and programming to stay active. The Residence Hall Association offers a number of fun events throughout the year, from Super Bowl and holiday celebrations to water wars, skate nights and more.
