This multi-year study indicates a slight variance between onground and on-line, and almost no variance between access and selective institutions.

• The program utilizes a simple point system, which identifies various required activities you can do to earn points to achieve your goal.

• Activities such as preventative exam, a health screening, health assessment, MSSU Wellness Expo, Lunch & Learns, etc.

• You can earn a monthly $25 contribution credit toward your health insurance costs.

That is $300/year.

• The University Council approved that the program be permanently voluntary.

• Academic Year 2015-2016: 366 student-athletes • Academic Year 2016-2017: 430 student-athletes • Fall of 2017: 483 student-athletes with more joining MSSU at mid-year • 27 student-athletes graduated during winter commencement with 3 being Magna Cum Laude and one being in her first year of medical school at KCU-Joplin

• Addition of women’s sport required by the NCAA ISSSG/Title IX report • Women’s golf is a high-demand sport within the region • Local school districts excel at the sport • Minimal cost and attracts between 12-17 student-athletes once fully implemented • Regional community members we know will support the program financially • Area golf courses will allow us to use facilities at no charge

Retention Initiatives • Enhance Grade Checks – Yours To Lose, Honors, Humphreys Scholars, Athletes, Project Stay, At Risk, etc.

• Mid-Terms are helpful, but they come too late to significantly impact/support many of our students.

• Enhance Advising - 15 to Finish, Plans of Study, Meta Majors

Probation Academic Success Strategies (PASS) PASS is designed to assist students who are on academic probation in returning to good academic standing and ultimately graduating from MSSU. Please note that freshmen who ended up on academic probation last semester are enrolled in the PASS program to work with ACTS advisor.

These students have a freshman probation hold on their account restricting enrollment or changes to schedule to ACTS advisors.

Student Satisfaction Inventory • Student Affairs and Institutional Effectiveness are currently working on the National Student Satisfaction Survey.

• The survey ran from October to December 2017.

• 864 MSSU students responded.

• Data will be available in February!

Does It Really Matter?

MSSU averages 1,000 new freshmen students each fall.

•

If we retain 10 additional students per year, that equates to approximately $43,000 (net tuition) retained per year.

•

Example: If every academic unit retained 2 students: - 66 students retained = $283,300/year.

What Can We Do? • Be intentional in communicating with students

• New student orientation – UE 100

• Early engagement

• Re-recruiting withdrawn students (outreach at the dept. level)

• Early alert for at-risk issues

• Tutoring

• Exit interviews/surveys for withdrawals

• Supplemental instruction

What Can We Do? Maintain Early Engagement with Students Inside & Outside of Class

Remember we have three types of students: 1. Those that will be fine and graduate regardless of what we do.

2. Those that will struggle and drop off no matter what we do.

3. The majority are in the middle, where intervention and communication might be the factor that tips the scales in their direction for success.
