Ms. Stacie Scrivner, Department Chair and Assistant Professor of Dental Hygiene, was honored as one of the 2017 class of Salute to Health Care Honorees by the Joplin Regional Business Journal. Dr. Brad Modlin, Assistant Professor of English, has been recognized for several recent publications. His book of poems titled Everyone at This Party Has Two Names was published in November 2016 and won The Cowles Poetry Book Prize. His 2017 collection of short stories, Surviving STACIE SCRIVNER in Drought, won The Cupboard Press’ annual contest. In September, the Peabody Award-winning public radio conversation and podcast, On Being (https://onbeing.org/), featured Modlin’s poem “What You Missed that Day You Were Absent from Fourth Grade” in its newsletter, describing it as ‘The Poem That Ends Krista Tippett’s [host] Email Signature.’ Ms. Sherry Whiteman, Respiratory Therapy Department faculty, Ms. Janice Dunaway, Respiratory Therapy Department faculty, Mr. Caleb Lewis, Simulation Center Coordinator, Ms. Glenda Pippin, Department Chair of Respiratory Therapy, all part of the School of Health Sciences, co-authored a book with Scot Jones in 2016 titled Respiratory Simulation: 20 Adult Simulations (ISBN: 987-0932887-50-4). Since then that book has been adopted by 100 respiratory programs in the nation, 25% of the total number of programs. The same team recently published Neonatal/Pediatric Respiratory Simulations (ISBN: 978-093288727-6). Both books are designed to assist respiratory instructors in the facilitation of simulation, and also provide the students with supplemental worksheets on each topic.

GRANTS Dr. Andrea Cullers, Assistant Professor of Kinesiology, in collaboration with Joplin Food Action Network (JFAN), received a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to work with the University of Missouri Extension Office to bring the program Eat Smart in Parks and Play (ESIP) to the Joplin Area. Dr. Cullers and several Kinesiology students conducted food tasting and surveying at the September 16, 2017 MSSU football game. JFAN awarded the MSSU Athletics Department $5,700.00 to update menus to TV monitors at campus concessions. The TV monitors displaying the menus will highlight the new healthier food items being sold and showcase the collaboration between ESIP and Missouri Southern. MSSU is the first university in Missouri to participate in the ESIP program. Dr. David Penning, Assistant Professor of Biology and Environmental Health, received a $1,000 research award from the Prairie Biotic Research Group to aid in the monitoring and collection of local reptiles and amphibians. COMMUNITY SERVICE Missouri Southern hosted the 6th Annual Missouri Mission of Mercy (MOMOM) dental clinic June 9-10, 2017 in the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center. The Dental Hygiene Department worked with over 1,000 dental health professionals and community volunteers to provide 900 cleanings, 800 fillings, and 1,600 extractions. MOMOM is a large-scale dental clinic that provides free oral healthcare to patients of all ages who cannot otherwise afford or access care. According to the Missouri Dental Association’s website, approximately 1,200 underserved adults and children received more than $800,000 worth of free dental care. Dental Hygiene Department students and faculty provided dental screenings and fluoride varnish to over 200 children at Jasper Elementary school. They also visited Missouri Southern’s Lion Cub Academy classrooms on October 20, 2017 to teach children about proper techniques for using their toothbrush and the long-term benefits of taking care of their teeth. Faculty from School of Health Sciences have been going to the Carl Junction Junior High School for last 2 years to assist with their Physical Education/Health Education classes. The team was recently contacted by College Heights Christian School (Joplin), to work with teachers, and Neosho High School, to work with students, to provide the same community service. Dr. Renee White, Department Chair and Associate Professor of Social Work, sponsored the Joplin Regional Opioid Summit at MSSU on October 17, 2017; one of nine summits held across Missouri which were initiated by Missouri Governor Greitens. Dr. Renee White, Department Chair and Associate Professor of Social Work, served on a 12-person round table discussion group with Missouri First Lady Greitens regarding the status of the foster care system in Missouri on September 7, 2017. C O N F E R E N C E AT T E N D A N C E Ms. Becky Harshaw, Dental Hygiene adjunct faculty, attended the Missouri Public Health Association conference September 25-27, 2017 in Columbia, MO. She plans to continue working with public health officials and implement a dental health care study in an area nursing home. Her focus is on prevention and reduction in the incidents of pulmonary aspiration, a hot topic in dental hygiene literature now. Dr. Marcia Wilmes, Department Chair and Associate Professor of Nursing, attended the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) Self-Study Forum held in Las Vegas, NV on October 12-13, 2017. The conference provided an overview of the revised ACEN accreditation standards that went into effect January 2017. The MSSU Nursing Department is due for a reaccreditation visit in 2020 and must prepare for self-study under the revised standards.

STUDENT ENGAGEMENT Dr. Alla Barry, Associate Professor of Biology and Environmental Health, and five biology students attended the Annual Meeting of the American Association of Clinical Anatomists July 1721, 2017 at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, MN. Each student gave poster presentation on their independent research projects. Dr. Barry served as the faculty sponsor and mentor for each research project. Four of the studies were based on findings discovered during routine dissection in the human dissection laboratory. The findings included DNA analysis, sponsored by Dr. Brad Creamer, Associate Professor of Biology and Environmental Health, and histology, sponsored by Dr. Crystal Lemmons, Professor of Biology and Environmental Health. All abstracts from these studies will be published in January 2018 issue of Clinical Anatomy. Dr. Lezlie Cantrell, Associate Professor of Dental Hygiene (Joplin) and Gail Taubel, Assistant Professor of Dental Hygiene (Rolla) attended the Missouri Dental Hygienists’ Association Annual Session October 12-13, 2017 in Lake Ozark, MO. They were accompanied by 40 second-year dental hygiene students from Joplin, Rolla, and Sikeston, and 30 first-year students from Joplin. All attendees participated in continuing dental hygiene education classes, and the annual business meeting for the Missouri Dental Hygienists’ Association. Dr. Cantrell and Ms. Taubel also participated in an educator’s forum with other educators from different states. Topics pertinent to the future of the profession of dental hygiene and to the education of dental hygienists were discussed.

Ms. Kisa Clark, Lecturer of Communication, was part of the facultystudent team recipient of the 2017 McCaleb Initiative for Peace grant. Ms. Clark and senior Mass Communication and Public Relations student, Cora Butcher- Spellman, spent over a week in Northern Ireland in July 2017 examining the longtime conflict between Unionist Protestants and Nationalist Catholics in the country, specifically around the current debate over legalizing same sex marriage. Their research resulted in stories and photos that were published in a special insert in the campus newspaper, The Chart.
Dr. Amy Gates, Assistant Professor of English, served as a mentor to English major Mariah Frazier, who proposed and presented her paper “Feminism and Free Thought in Christina Rossetti’s ‘Goblin Market’” on an undergraduate panel at the Interdisciplinary Nineteenth-Century Studies Conference in Philadelphia, PA on March 16-19, 2017. Dr. David Penning, Assistant Professor of Biology and Environmental Health, led a group of five MSSU undergraduate students that participated in a Bioblitz and Prairie Day at George Washington Carver National Monument where they communicated the importance of wildlife diversity and education to the general public. 6
PROFESSIONAL SERVICE Dr. Megan Bever, Assistant Professor of History, attended the annual meeting of the Southern Historical Association (SHA) held November 9-12, 2017 in Dallas, TX. Dr. Bever currently serves on the SHA’s Membership Committee as well as the Outreach Committee for the Society of Civil War Historians. Dr. Teresa Boman, Assistant Professor of Biology and Environmental Health, is currently serving as vice-chair for the Biology section of the Missouri Academy of Science Annual Conference. Her responsibilities include reviewing submitted abstracts for both the poster presentations and oral presentations in order to determine acceptance of those for the conference. Dr. Teresa Boman and Dr. Katie Kilmer, Assistant Professors of Biology and Environmental Health, serve as co-directors of the Missouri Junior Academy of Science Region I Competition. To compete in this conference, students submit a research paper, written in the style of a scientific paper, and present their research orally in a 12 minute presentation. Select students are awarded the right to move onto the state competition which is held in conjunction with the Missouri Academy of Science Annual Conference. Dr. Susan Craig, Interim Department Chair and Associate Professor of Teacher Education, served as a conversation facilitator for the DESE MoPTA Café on February 23, 2016 in Columbia, MO. It was a one day conference at which higher education teacher education professors, K-12 cooperating teachers, and recent graduates participated in a series of focus groups designed to provide feedback to the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) and the Educational Testing Service (ETS) about the Missouri Pre-Service Teacher Assessment (MoPTA) process. Dr. Jill Greer, Professor of Anthropology, was an invited Linguistic Partner at the Breath of Life Archival Institute for Indigenous Languages Workshop at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C., May 28-June 9, 2017. She provided linguistic and grammatical knowledge to the community research team focused on the Ioway Tribal Language. Dr. Jill Greer, Professor of Anthropology, served as an organizer for the 37th Annual Siouan & Caddoan Languages Conference held June 13-15, 2017 at Missouri Southern. This is an international conference that included tribal leaders and language program instructors from the Kaw [Kansa], Quapaw, Ioway, Omaha, Ponca, Mandan, Crow, Hidatsa, and Hochunk [Winnebago] Nations. Dr. Wendy McGrane, Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs, is currently serving as the State Chair of the Missouri Chapter of the American Council on Education (ACE) Women’s Network. The goal of the state networks is to advance and support women in higher education. The ACE Women’s Network is a part of the ACE Inclusive Excellence Group, which is committed to providing programs, research, and resources that foster diversity and inclusion in higher education, particularly within senior leadership. Dr. Brad Modlin, Assistant Professor of English, served as the Guest Editor of the online creative nonfiction magazine Proximity (Summer 2017). Dr. David Penning, Assistant Professor of Biology and Environmental Health, served as a consulting scientist for an article “The science of the snake bite” published in Sierra Magazine. The article described a new research methodology using high-speed cameras to record snakes in their natural environments, rather than a laboratory setting. Dr. David Penning, Assistant Professor of Biology and Environmental Health, consulted as a snake predation expert for the documentary “Man-eating Python” which aired on the Discovery Channel (Icon Films). 7

Dr. David Penning, Assistant Professor of Biology and Environmental Health, consulted as a snake predation expert for the Smithsonian Channel and the California Academy of Sciences. Dr. Renee White, Department Chair and Associate Professor of Social Work, served as a subject matter expert to the National Advisory Committee on Children and Disasters Human Services Work Group, which published Exploring Approaches and Strategies for Human Services and Child-Serving Institutions to Promote Resiliency and Recovery for Children and Youth Affected by Natural Disasters: A Report of the National Advisory Committee on Children and Disasters Human Services Work Group, August 2017. This is a ground breaking document regarding the impact of disasters on children and their families intended for use by federal, state, tribe, territory and local levels of government, and all child-serving organizations. This is the second publication that Dr. White has been asked to guide, due to her expertise in working with children following the 2001 Joplin tornado. Dr. Renee White, Department Chair and Associate Professor of Social Work, was appointed as a founding board member on the National Disaster Leadership Team Board of Directors. The Team offers guidance and support in establishing and operating long term recovery organizations to communities who have experienced a disaster. Mr. Tim Wilson, Interim Department Chair and Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice, served as a forensic expert for two episodes of the Investigation Discovery channel show titled, Reasonable Doubt. The show revolves around a retired homicide detective and criminal defense attorney who conduct independent investigations into cases of convicted murderers whose families feel their loved ones were wrongfully convicted. Mr. Wilson reviewed the forensic evidence, including crime scene photos and crime lab reports, and conducted scientific experiments to test theories developed by the families. Season 2 of Reasonable Doubt will begin airing in early spring on the Investigation Discovery channel. EXHIBITIONS OF CREATIVE WORK Dr. Ricardo Espinosa, Associate Professor of Music, was the guest conductor for the Southeast Kansas Music Educators Association All-District Honor Band (SWKMEA) in December 2017. Dr. Ricardo Espinosa, Associate Professor of Music, served as a guest clinician for a drum major camp at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway, AR on July 23-26, 2017. Dr. Keith Talley, Department Chair and Professor of Music, presented a Faculty Recital titled “Selections from a Musical Journey” on February 23, 2017 along with fellow MSSU Music Department faculty member Ms. Debra Snodgrass. The recital featured pieces that Dr. Talley first learned and performed during each major stage of his musical journey with the saxophone from a high school musician to a professional performer. Saxophone performers from Missouri, Oklahoma, Kansas, Arkansas, and Texas were in attendance along with invited guest artist Joe Lulloff, Distinguished Professor of Music at Michigan State University (and one of Dr. Talley’s former teachers). Dr. Talley performed a piece composed by one of his former students, Adriel Reynolds, titled Dance Sweet! This composition DR. KEITH TALLEY was composed as both an homage and a parody of the standard Baroque suite. The work featured several varying styles including direct Baroque-era music ideas, a tango, a swing tune, as well as influences from a 1980s power ballade and influences from Alan Menken’s famous Disney music. 9
Dr. Phillip C. Wise, Professor of Music, directed the MSSU Jazz Combo as it recorded at Winterwood Studies outside of Eureka Springs, AR. Post production will conclude in early February culminating into a CD featuring ten musical selections. The recording was engineered by Eric Schabacker, who has recorded many musical legends including James Brown.
Dr. Scott Cragin, Professor of Marketing and Management, participated in a panel discussion at Leadership Springfield on February 22, 2017 in Springfield, MO. The panel members discussed Great Game of Business implementation efforts. MSSU’s adaptation of the program is called the Great Game of Education (GGOE).

Dr. Scott Cragin, Professor of Marketing and Management, gave a presentation at the 2017 EduTECH International Congress & Expo held June 8-9, 2017 in Sydney Australia. The presentation, Rapid Financial Results and Lasting Cultural Change, focused on how Missouri Southern has adapted and implemented the Great Game of Education (GGOE).
Dr. Jonathan Adongo, Assistant Professor of Economics, presented a paper at the Midwest Economic Association’s annual conference held March 30-April 2, 2017in Cincinnati, OH titled Legal Jurisdictions, Director Liability, and Venture Capitalists’ Equity Stakes in Africa. Additionally, he served as a session chair for a panel discussion. Dr. Bobbie Augspurger, Assistant Professor of Teacher Education, gave a hands-on presentation at the Mid-America Association for Institutional DR. The presentation focused on utilization of Google Apps for Education to facilitate communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity. Dr. Maggie Beachner and Dr. Carissa Gober, Assistant Professors in Teacher Education, gave a presentation titled Best Practices for Engaging Students of Generation Z at the Carthage R-9 School District’s Powerful Professional Development Workshop in April 2017. Mr. Matt Beaver, Clinical Instructor of Teacher Education, and Mr. Brian Neugebauer, Lecturer of Teacher Education, presented a professional development seminar at a STEM-Based Teacher Workshop hosted by the George Washington Carver (GWC) National Monument in Diamond, MO. The presentation, History is a Verb—GWC STEM Scavenger Hunt, focused on integrating the Missouri Learning Standards in Math and Social Studies through the use of technology. Missouri Southern’s Teacher Education Department has a long-standing partnership with GWC National Monument to create an awareness and appreciation of the monument and its impact on area educators. Dr. Megan Bever, Assistant Professor of History, presented a paper titled “Intimate enemies’: Liquor distillers and loyalty in the confederacy, 1861-1865” at the Organization of American Historians annual meeting in New Orleans, LA on April 6-9, 2017. Dr. Teresa Boman, Assistant Professor of Biology and Environmental Health, co-presented with Thomas, L. at the Missouri Academy of Sciences Annual Meeting held in Lindenwood, MO, April 21-22, 2017. Mr. Freddie Green, Assistant Professor of Music, co-presented a session titled How to Start Transcribing Solos/Jazz Styles at the Midwest Trumpet Festival held October 8-9, 2017 on the campus of Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, KS. Dr. Michael Howarth, Honors Program Director and Associate Professor of English, and Ms. Rachel Stanley, Assistant Honors Program Director, gave a presentation titled The Honors Survival Seminar at the National Collegiate Honors Council’s Annual Conference held in Atlanta, GA on November 8-12, 2017. Their presentation explored ways to enhance the Honors orientation to create an experience that functions as a microcosm of the Honors Program itself, namely interacting with faculty; discussing research possibilities; meeting fellow students; and exploring the study habits they must apply to have a successful academic career. The Kinesiology Department received the 2017 Friends of Mintahama Community Partnership Award, sponsored by the Girls Scouts of the Missouri Heartland, “in appreciation for their continuing support and partnership with Friends of Mintahama to encourage youth in outdoor activities for a lifetime of healthy living.” For the past three years, the Kinesiology Department has partnered with the Girl Scouts and the Missouri Department of Conservation to offer field days that provide students with activities that include archery, fishing, nature hikes as well as teambuilding and fitness exercises.

The Kinesiology Department earned a $2,500 prize package for winning the Show Me Your MiniGame! Competition at the Great Game of Business (GGOB) annual Gathering of the Games Conference held September 6-8, 2017 in Dallas, TX. This was a breakout session that resembled the famous TV show, Shark Tank. Ms. Maryann Mitts, Assistant Professor of Kinesiology, had 90 seconds to present the department’s mini-game titled P.A.U.S.E. for Retention. In this time, she communicated: the problem the game addresses, the players involved, the forecasting targets, the scoreboard, their actual performance, and any other information that could be squeezed in during the brief presentation. Missouri Southern competed against sixteen other businesses/organizations and represented the only institution of higher education.

SPECIALIZED TRAINING Ms. Kim Rogers and Ms. Kathi Corum, Assistant Professors of Dental Hygiene, attended the Dentsply Sirona Ultrasonic Scaling Teaching Institute (USTI) in York Pennsylvania, July 31-August 3, 2017. USTI is an ultrasonic instrumentation “train the trainer” program for clinical faculty. The Missouri Southern State University Dental Hygiene Program was one of only 25 schools in the United States selected for this opportunity; attendance and travel expenses were fully funded for this week long event.

EMERITUS APPOINTMENTS Emeritus status was awarded to Dr. Deborah Brown and Dr. Jack Spurlin at the November 17, 2017 Board of Governors meeting.
Dr. Deborah Brown, Professor of Teacher Education, had a 23-year tenure with the university. She served in a variety of academic and administrative positions over the years, including
assistant professor, professor, department chair and graduate program coordinator. In 2015,
she was named the School of Education’s Interim Dean, and Dean in July 2016. “Of particular
note is her legacy of mentorship in the Teacher Education Department,” said Lorinda Hackett,
Interim Dean of the School of Education. “She was the 2017 recipient of the Legacy Award for her resolute efforts fostering innovation, creativity and inquiry in a career of service.”
Dr. Jack Spurlin, Professor of Criminal Justice, provided 35 years of service to Missouri
Southern and retired as Vice President of Lifelong Learning. Along the way, he served as Co-
ordinator of the university’s Police Academy and an Instructor in the Criminal Justice Depart-
ment. In 1990, he was appointed Chair of the Criminal Justice Department and Director of the Police Academy. In 1993, he was appointed Dean of the School of Technology. The Emeritus
nomination letter stated, “The faculty members of the Criminal Justice Department believe no person has contributed more to the growth and success of the department than Dr. Spurlin.”

It is with great pride that we invite you to enjoy this compilation of our faculty’s greatest scholarly achievements of 2017. The body of work presented here represents not only the creation and dissemination of wisdom that may have generational impacts, but also the results of a special combination of intellect, curiosity and tedious labor. We thank and congratulate these scholars who have endured many opportunity costs and sacrifices to bring this knowledge to the forefront of the literature. Indeed, the evolving and proliferating culture of scholarship at Missouri Southern is being advanced by many. So in this issue, the largest of any Faculty Focus to date, it is only appropriate to recognize those across campus who have made the research process more achievable for our scholars. Those who contribute to the Student Research Symposium and who serve on the Faculty Development Committee and the Promotion and Tenure Committee have strengthened our culture of scholarship. The IACUC and IRB committees have worked diligently to ensure our campus is at the forefront of safe and ethical research. The Library and Business Office staff focus on ensuring faculty have access to the resources we need to engage in scholarly endeavors. The Physical Plant literally moves mountains to ensure we have proper laboratory facilities, and URM enthusiastically promotes our intellectual advances. It is a team effort, as are most things here at MOSO. I am thankful to be a part of this environment.
