MSSU has embraced its responsibility and privilege as an institution of higher education to create wisdom, in addition to disseminating knowledge. As HLC recently stated in their narrative evaluation of MSSU, “the(ir) vision and goals promote engagement in scholarly activities, research and innovation. And their values reflect the

The K I N E S I O L O G Y D E P A R T M E N T works with the community in a variety of ways: • Hosts the Children’s Lifetime Sports Academy annually • Serves as a member of the SW Missouri Archery Alliance (Carl Junction, Joplin, Carthage and Sarcoxie schools) • Co-hosted the Missouri National Archery in the School Program (MONASP) State Qualifying Tournament on March 2, 2019. For the last 3 years, approximately 700 4th - 12th grade archers from around the Four States participate in this event. DR. BOBBIE AUGSPURGER, Assistant Professor of Teacher Education, was President of the MidAmerica Association for Institutional Research (MidAIR) Board of Directors for 2018-2019. She previously served as Program Chair and was responsible for coordinating presentations, guest speakers, and developing the annual conference program. Dr. Bobbie Augspurger was elected to the Missouri Professors of Educational Administration (MPEA) Board of Directors. Summer work for MPEA included creating the new Missouri Performance Assessment required for Missouri certification replacing MoSLPA exam. The group helped with construction of new Activity Log with required Domain and Competency elements, assisted with finalization of Missouri Leader Standards update to Domains and specific Competencies, and helped work on the recently implemented Missouri Aspiring Administrator Evaluation tool and rubric.

M S . T A R A G A R R I T Y , Master Instructor of Social Work, volunteered with AIDS Project of the Ozarks on December 12, 2018 to assist with dispersing food to clients. D R . N A T A L I E G R E C U , Assistant Professor of Communication, serves as an Executive Board Member for the Neighborhood Adult Literacy Action (NALA) Joplin Read. She is also a member of the Public Relations/ Communication Committee, Committee Leader for the NALA Baseball Bonanza (formerly Spell Ball) Auction, and manages their fundraising booth at the 32nd Street Antique Mall. D R . K AT I E K I L M E R , Assistant Professor of Biology and Environmental Health, was invited to present, “Pesticides, Pollinators and Environmental Policies,” to the Joplin Area Beekeepers Association on February 26, 2019. Dr. Katie Kilmer organized a community workshop about advanced beekeeping techniques in conjunction with Joplin Area Beekeepers Association. The workshop was held at MSSU Prairie on April 29, 2019. DR. LAURA SCHISLER, Assistant Professor of Teacher Education, facilitated a Camp Coding session with practicing teachers at the Southwest Center for Educational Excellence’s Technology Summit held in Monett, MO on July 25, 2018. Dr. Laura Schislerserved as a conference proposal reviewer for the Association for Science Teacher Education for their 2019 International Conference in Savannah, GA January 3-5, 2019.

D R . J E A N C O L T H A R P , Assistant Professor of Mathematics, earned a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction and Mathematics from the University of Missouri-Kansas City in December 2018. Her dissertation title was Instruction Type and Student Major as They Relate to Student Success in College Level Developmental Mathematics Classes. D R . L A U R A S C H I S L E R , Assistant Professor of Teacher Education, graduated from Texas Tech University with a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in STEM Education on December 15, 2018. Her dissertation was titled Teaching Engineering SelfEfficacy of Elementary Teachers. D R . A M B E R M I N T E R T , Assistant Professor of Art, earned an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership, Curriculum, and Instruction from Evangel University in May 2019. Her dissertation title was The Effects of Formative Assessment on Motivation to Learn and Student Achievement. M R . C H A D W I L L I A M S , Master Instructor of Emergency Medical Services, earned Certified Flight Paramedic certification (FP-C). This certification is designed for experienced EMS providers interested in becoming Flight Paramedics; as of February 2018, there were approximately 6,500 certified flight paramedics worldwide. Mr. Williams works as a flight paramedic for Mercy Life Line. D R . B O B B I E A U G S P U R G E R , Assistant Professor of Teacher Education, achieved Certified Educator Level 1 and Certified Educator Level 2 through the Google for Education: Teacher Center. Certification requires completion of a timed exam covering Google App features and application of features to educational settings in a meaningful way. 6

Dr. Fischer’s paper explored the efforts by Ecuadorian colonists and state officials in the Amazon during the middle part of the twentieth century to turn the gaze of the region away from the commercial networks of the Amazonian basin and toward the Ecuadorian state and nation. This process was both aided and impeded by “witchcraft” or “brujería” not only practiced by indigenous shamans, but also wielded by newcomers to the region who sought to secure Indian labor and resources. SPECIAL FEATURE DR. TIM WILSON, Associate Professor and Department Chair of Criminal Justice, was invited to serve as a forensic expert for two episodes in season 3 of the Investigation Discovery show, Reasonable Doubt. The show features a retired homicide detective and a defense attorney who conduct independent investigations into murder cases in which the convicted individual’s family feels they are innocent. Dr. Wilson reviews the physical evidence, conducts experiments, and provides a professional opinion on his findings. For the seaason currently in production, Dr. Wilson traveled to Chicago, IL and Blue Springs, MO. These episodes will air on Investigation Discovery in early 2020. Dr. Wilson was also consulted in seasons one and two of Reasonable Doubt.

D A V I D S H A R L O W , Associate Professor of Music and Assistant to the Dean of the School of Arts & Sciences, was invited to serve as guest conductor for a performance of John Rutter’s “Requiem” at New York City’s Carnegie Hall on June 10, 2019. The concert, staged by MidAmerica Productions, included nearly 40 students as well as community members from the Missouri Southern Concert Chorale and the Southern Symphonic Chorus. Dr. Sharlow describes experience of performing in this acclaimed venue as the “trip of a lifetime.”

Putney’s Student Research Grant project titled “The Effect of Soil pH Levels on Earthworm Survival and Behavior.”

Dr. David Penning led a group of five students who participated in a Bioblitz Day at George Washington Carver National Monument where they communicated the importance of wildlife diversity and education to the public. Dr. David Penning led a group of 10 students on a field excursion to Duck Creek Conservation Area and Mingo National Wildlife Refuge in Southeast Missouri. Students worked alongside a dozen students from the University of Central Missouri; they found and identified 25 species of reptiles and amphibians, several of which are state-endangered.

DR. NICOLE FOSTER-SHOAF, Assistant Professor of Political Science, supervises Gubernatorial Clemency Research Group (GCRG), students who research how modern governors use their clemency powers. The project was initially inspired by a student who was unable to answer a seemingly simple question, “How common are gubernatorial pardons?” To date, 13 students have contributed to the project in some way, from gathering data online, contacting state officials, researching clemency processes in the American states, and helping to develop a dataset. Project involvement facilitates students development and refinement of research, writing, and presentation skills.

DR. JENCY SUNDARARAJAN, Associate Professor of Physics, serves as the Society of Physics Students (SPS) faculty advisor. The Missouri Southern chapter received the Distinguished Chapter Award during the 201718 academic year. Chapters selected for this recognition must demonstrate involvement in local, zone, and national SPS meetings; participation in SPS programs; public and/or K-12 outreach efforts; community service; contributions to student recruitment and retention; alumni interaction; and participation in social events. Dr. Jency Sundararajan serves as the chapter advisor for the physics honor society, Sigma Pi Sigma. The Missouri Southern chapter of Sigma Pi Sigma received the Chapter Project Award in 2019.

MS. STEPHANEE SCHIDING, Kinesiology Department Lecturer, and members of the Kinesiology Club created the game Pickle Basket which earned the Innovative Games Award at the Missouri Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (MOAHPERD) conference in 2017. The Kinesiology Department earned bragging rights and won $1000 worth of physical education equipment. D R . S T E V E W A G N E R , Professor of History, accompanied four History majors to Omaha, Nebraska for the Missouri Valley History Conference in March 2019. Brennan Cummings, Sara Haskins, Patrick Laird, and Tyler Masters had each completed Wagner’s Seminar in Historical Research course and had their final papers, based on the seminar’s theme “1968,” accepted for the conference. Tyler Masters was awarded an MSSU Student Writing Excellence Award for his paper on the coalition Robert Kennedy built for his 1968 presidential campaign.

Excellence in Assessment

Established in 2019, the Excellence in Research Award will be presented annually to faculty members who have conducted original scholarship and/or creative activity which expands the body of disciplinary knowledge. Our inaugural recipients have demonstrated significant scholarly contributions to the fields of literature (Dr. Howarth), and herpetology (Dr. Penning). Examples of recent books are provided below, and, as evidenced throughout this publication, both also write articles, give presentations, and facilitate student research.

The Excellence in Assessment Award is given to a program or department that engages in authentic assessment which is a meaningful and sustainable system to determine how well goals are met and includes faculty and staff throughout the process.

The new assessment tool will be implemented next academic year and will be the sole certification assessment to license pre-service teachers graduating from a Missouri educator preparation program.

E D O U T H O U S E , Assistant Professor of Art, served as a reviewer for the Northwest Arkansas AIGA Student Portfolio Review in April 2018 at the University of Arkansas, in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Six MSSU Graphic Design majors presented their portfolios at the event, met with professional designers to evaluate their work, and participated in workshops with graphic design students from several universities.

Dr. David Penning consulted as a snake predation expert for the Travel Channel’s show Finding Beasts where he provided natural history and behavioral details of the Green Anaconda. Dr. David Penning consulted as a snake expert for two articles for LiveScience. One article explained how a decapitated snake could still envenomate someone, and the second article explained how it was possible for a giant python to consume an adult human. D R . E L I Z A B E T H R O B I N S O N , Assistant Professor of Music, served as an adjudicator for the Mid-South Flute Society’s Young Artist Competition, the Oklahoma Flute Society Solo and Ensemble Festival, the National Flute Association Newly Published Works Competition, the Kentucky Flute Society’s Young Artist and Piccolo Artist competition recorded rounds, and the University of Oklahoma marching band audition.

Dr. David Penning hosted a visiting graduate student from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette over the summer (2019) while she completed her thesis work in the Reptile Physiology Lab at Missouri Southern. Dr. David Penning consulted as a snake morphology expert for the Science Channel where he provided detailed information on the morphology and function of snake skulls and venom.

Drs. Bever, Delehanty, and Foster-Shoaf taught an interdisciplinary traveling seminar, Building A Republic, in Spring 2018. This course included discussions of public memory, political theory, and contemporary politics and culminated with an 8-day trip to Washington, DC, where we explored the ideas and places we spent the spring reading about and discussing. This innovative, interdisciplinary traveling seminar was highlighted on Newsmakers (June 2018), MSSU ITS Friday, and a meeting of the local Kiwanis Club (April 2019).

The Ideas That Stick presentations encourage the campus to come together for a free exchange of ideas.

Dr. Jency Sundararajan, Associate Professor of Physics, was elected a Zone Councilor for Zone 12 (MO, OK and KS) by the Society of Physics Students/Sigma Pi Sigma National Council; she will serve a three-year term which runs 2019-2022.

D R . J A S O N W I L L A N D , Associate Professor of Biology, and D r . S c o t t W e l l s , Professor of Biology, co-led a study abroad trip to Blue Creek Field Station and South Water Caye Marine Reserve in Belize. Students were immersed in both rainforest and coral reef ecosystems due to the primitive housing, no running water and limited electricity/WIFI access, in both locations. Students activities included ethnobotany with local Mayan guides, a night hike to look for nocturnal animals, a home visit with a Mayan family in Blue Creek village, a visit to the Lubaantun Mayan ruins, Garifuna drumming lessons, snorkeling the corals reefs off the coast, and a visit to the Smithsonian research station on Carrie Bow Caye. This trip is the conclusion of a semester long course, BIO 352: Biomes, which introduces the cultural and ecological aspects of the rainforests and coral reefs of Belize.

In Copenhagen, the group took a bike tour to different restaurants to explore Nordic cuisine and kayaked in the canals in the rain. Following an overnight ferry to Oslo, the group again road bikes, tried new food, and hiked in the forest. Students noted, in both Denmark and Norway, that quality was valued more than quantity, and that people enjoyed being outdoors.
