Your 2022 MSSBU President:
Vethathi Arunthayaparan Welcome to Medicine at Bond University! You should be incredibly proud! Getting into medicine is not easy and your hard work has paid off. I’m Vethahi Arunthayaparan, mostly known as V, and it is my honour to welcome you to the 2026 Medical cohort on behalf of the MSSBU committee.
What does your role entail? My role encompasses many things but the most important role of mine is being your voice and representative around Bond University and nationally - whether it is facilitating issues that students have with faculty or it is running academic, social and AMSA events that the student body want to experience. Our team is filled with extremely capable, dedicated individuals that work hard to allow you to enjoy your experience in the medical programme as much as you can.
What are your aims? My goals for MSSBU are big but, we are slowly and surely achieving all of them. Our goals consist of improving transparency with our committee to the student body and faculty to us, integrating the Bond students more into the greater medical schools so we can get to know our colleagues from now. Motivating our student body to have more taboo conversations to stop inequalities happening under our nose and finally, focus on education, we are all here to study and MSSBU wants to provide as much supplementary help for everyone to thrive in their degree. Big goals, but extremely achievable with the passionate members in our committee.
A piece of advice: First year is the best time in your Medical degree to kick back, relax and enjoy. Don’t get me wrong study and focus on the programme as much as you need but there is enough time for you to go and explore the Gold Coast, try new things and importantly, get to know your cohort. These people will become your family as the experience you are about to have over the next 5 years isn't going to be easy so you need them there to laugh, cry and rant with. All the older years are here to help you so never hesitate to reach out and ask for help when you need it. Looking forward to meeting all of you soon and we are extremely excited to welcome to you to our Bond University Medicine family!

Your 2022 Vice President Internal:
James Scarfo Welcome to Bond University! My name is James and I’m a 3rd year medical student here at Bond. This year, I have the pleasure of serving you as your Vice President Internal. I would like to firstly give a huge congratulations to you all; the process of applying for med school can be incredibly gruelling and tiresome so congratulations for making it through!
What does your role entail?
What are your aims?
Overall, my role is about aiding your transition into medical school. My role involves organising a few activities in O Week and planning MedCamp! On top of this, I work with many members in our team to ensure that our students are being offered fantastic social events and services for their health and wellbeing.
My primary aim is to ensure that MSSBU makes you feel at home when you arrive to campus. We have created many events to help you all form wonderful memories and long-lasting friendships. Your first semester is incredibly special and monumental, so I am honoured to play a part in the start of this new adventure for you.
A piece of advice: Bond really is unique and like no other university experience you can imagine. Having come from a public university where class sizes can be as big as 500+ students, your new cohort will end up feeling like one big family. My advice is to make the most of the short time you have together. Go out, have fun and make sure you enjoy everything university has to offer, because before you know it, it’ll all be over. Feel free to reach out to the older years – everyone is more than happy to help! First year is the most relaxed year by far so enjoy it as much as you can. When you look back at it, you probably won't remember all the organelles of a cell but rather the crazy adventures and memories you made, so have fun! I look forward to meeting you all and congratulations once again!

Your 2022 Vice President External:
Sapumal Gunaruwan CONGRATULATIONS Y'ALL!! YOU'RE OFFICIALLY STUDYING MEDICINE!! My name’s Sapumal Gunaruwan (but please call me Sappy!) and I’d like to congratulate you all on getting into Medicine at Bond!
What does your role entail?
What are your aims?
I’m the Vice President External – I basically do a lot of the “behind the scenes” work to improve your experience of the medical program. I represent you guys as students at many faculty meetings, and work closely with your Year Representatives to ensure your ideas and concerns are heard and acted upon. I also oversee the Academic Portfolio of MSSBU, and always try help out where I can!
My aims are essentially to increase the number of pathways students have to express their ideas and concerns, through both the official faculty and unofficial MSSBU mediated pathways, so that students always have options on how they’d like their voice to be heard!
A piece of advice: Don’t be afraid to ask for help and take care of yourself! Medical school is not in any way easy, and there will be times where you will struggle. This is okay, and please do not beat yourself up over it - you're incredible for making it this far and are doing so well! Med students are notorious for our toxic "ride or die" mindset but it is SO important for you to take the time you need for yourself, and please reach out if you need help! MSSBU, faculty and your peers are all here for you, and we will all be very understanding if you ever need help or need to take time off. You matter most. You need to take care of yourself before you can take care of your patients after all! But seriously, put your wellbeing first! And if you ever see me around please feel free to say hi to me, I'm always down for a chat about anything!

Everything you will learn in Bond’s Medical Program will fall under one of four domains: Science and Scholarship, Health and Society, Professionalism and Leadership, and Clinical Practice. All four domains are equally important in shaping you to be an amazing doctor.
Science and Scholarship (SS) Most of the things learned in first year will be within this domain. Includes anatomy (lots of histology), physiology (metabolism, the renal and cardiovascular systems), some pharmacology, embryology, genetics. Critical appraisal of resources like journal articles and websites. Research and statistics.
Health and Society (HS) In this domain you’ll be learning that health isn’t all about the science. There are so many other factors that affect our health. This domain includes planetary health, Indigenous health and health inequity.
Professionalism and Leadership (PL) You’ll be learning about ethics, the medico-legal system and also the importance of looking after yourself now as a medical student, and in the future as a doctor.
Clinical Practice (CP) Throughout first year you’ll be learning how to take a patient’s history with simulated patients. Procedural skills - Includes proper hand washing techniques, checking for vital signs, and learning how to use medical equipment (e.g. blood glucose monitors, blood pressure cuff and many more)

Congrats! You made it! Now it’s time to enjoy it… Don’t get me wrong, medical school is hard, but finding balance between study and life can be hard too. My biggest piece of advice would be to work on this now. It may take some trial and error, but taking the time to establish healthy, sustainable study habits will be worth it. Personally, I’m a big advocate for drawing things out. Whether it’s flowcharts or mind maps, drawing helps me to conceptualise the big picture amongst the plethora of information that’s about to be thrown at you. Once you’ve got the understanding down pat, it’s time to find a way to commit it to memory. Anki is a great tool for this as it allows you to practice active recall. Try to stay up to date on the content and study each week. Medicine isn’t something you can easily cram for last minute (trust me). All this aside, it’s important to enjoy your time at Bond. There are endless social activities and initiatives to get involved with. Make the most of these because it's a great way to make friends! Finally, the Gold Coast is beautiful, get out there and explore the beaches and hinterlands whenever you get the chance. Good luck guys and see you on campus!
Congrats on getting into Bond Medicine! For some the journey to this point might’ve only been a few months, while for others it’s been years in the making. Regardless, you’re all now officially medical students! Your time at Bond will fly by so quick so make sure you enjoy every moment of it - especially First Year. You’re gonna hear about lots of different approaches to studying so I suggest you use first year to explore and test as many study strategies to find what works best for you. While doing this, always remember that there is no perfect study method. Different content will require different ways of learning it. Be flexible and adapt to whatever gets thrown your way! Besides study, keep up with your extracurriculars, try get to know everyone in your cohort and go out as much as you can in 1st year! You’re only going get busier after this, so use this time to explore everything that campus and Gold Coast have to offer. At the end of the day, you’re a med student, but be MORE than just that! All the best!

A huge welcome and congrats on getting accepted into Bond Medicine!! You’re about to enter some of the best years of your life. Before you embark on this new and exciting chapter of your life, I’d like to share a few helpful tips with you I’ve come to learn along the way.
Daud Mutahar
Firstly, I would encourage you to get involved as much as you can. What sets Bond apart from so many other unis is the tightly knit culture that exists within our university. There’s a huge variety of clubs, societies, and groups available, and getting involved in these groups will not only allow you to focus on something outside of Med, but it will also allow you to create bonds and friendships with students from various backgrounds and degrees. They say the friends you make in med school often go on to become some of your closest lifelong friends. That leads me to my second point of making sure you understand the importance of balancing your studies with your other commitments in life. These may include spending time with your friends, family, work, exercise, exploring the beautiful Gold Coast, and most importantly time spent looking after yourself. Med school can certainly be challenging at times, and there will be times where finding this balance may feel extremely difficult. But adopting strategies to stay organised and setting realistic and achievable goals can help you find this balance even when the workload of medicine can feel overwhelming. I can’t stress how important it is to look after yourself. Just remember that this is the start of a lifelong journey in Medicine, so treat it like a marathon more than a sprint. In terms of study, I would encourage you to try different strategies and see what works best for you. There are a plethora of resources and note taking apps out where, whether it be Anki, Osmosis, GoodNotes, OneNote, you name it! First year is the perfect time to try all these things out. As I mentioned before, these next few years will most likely be some of the best and most cherished years of life. So, throughout all the highs and lows of the journey, make sure that you don’t forget to have fun!! Best of luck, I hope to see you all around soon!

Hi everyone! Congratulations and welcome to Bond! Medical school certainly isn’t easy, but it’s not as intimidating as it’s often made out to be either. So, here are some tips to help you enjoy and make the most out of first year.
Brooke Heilig
I run the risk of sounding cliché here, but the best advice I can give you is to find a healthy balance between study and relaxation. I know it’s easy to get caught up in the seemingly insurmountable workload at times, but remember, life exists outside of medical school! Ensure you take time for yourself – spend time socialising with new friends, getting involved in different sports and events, and exploring the Gold Coast. For me, staying organised and keeping on top of my notes week by week (or at least trying to...) helped minimise stress around exams and allowed me to relax and have plenty of downtime with friends too! When it comes to studying, use first year to find your preferred learning style and experiment with different study strategies. Don’t feel pressured to study a certain way just because everyone else is. Spaced repetition using Anki works for many. Similarly, lots of people find study groups a great way to revise and actively recall content. There’s also nothing wrong with simply writing notes or drawing diagrams. If you’re anything like me, you might find that a combination of all these strategies actually works best for you! Lastly, don’t put too much pressure on yourself. Be present, take an interest in what you’re learning, and have fun – that’s all that matters!
Amogh Durgam
Hey everyone! Congratulations on getting into Medicine here at Bond University! Throughout your time in Medicine, you’ll learn all about studying and study techniques to get those high marks, so I won’t be talking about that today. Instead, I will speak to you all about something even more critical. Your TIME. Since we are given absurd amounts of content to learn, it becomes extremely easy to let Medicine take up all of your time. DON’T let this happen! You must know how to balance your studies with all of your other priorities. Therefore, prioritizing tasks and completing the highest priority tasks is a skill you should continuously develop. It is important to note that your priorities can (and probably should) change daily. One day it can be your histology lecture, and the next day it can be your mental health. By making sure you complete your personal highest priority tasks, you will make the best use of your time.
16 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Is med school harder than highschool?
Although the step from high school to uni is quite big, you’ll find that you have a lot more free time than you probably did in Year 12. It is completely normal to struggle a bit when learning a new concept, especially if you’re fresh from high school. Looking at a variety of resources ("Human Anatomy and Physiology" by Marieb is the first-year bible), asking questions and going over difficult concepts may be helpful. The study-life balance is great. We promise that med students know how to have fun!
So much uni jargon?! Please help!
LECTURES: These usually take place in a lecture theatre and you will be listening to a lecturer explain concepts, just like a normal class in high school. Almost all lectures are not compulsory but it’s highly recommended that you attend. TUTORIALS: We call our tutorials SGL (Small group learning). These compulsory sessions are held every Monday and Friday. Each week, in a small group, you will be exploring a patient facing a medical condition that is relevant to the week’s content. WORKSHOPS: Workshops are more interactive than lectures and allow you to apply the knowledge you got from lectures. You might be completing activities in small groups or trying out some medical equipment. PRACTICALS: Your practicals will mostly be held in the anatomy labs, where you’ll usually get to see real cadavers! It’s a super exciting opportunity to get your hands on some real body parts and refresh your anatomy knowledge. Other revision activities are also present.
Is there much competition in med school?
Short answer: nope! Everyone here is friendly and more than willing to lend a helping hand. The days of competition are long gone, so you can take it easy now!
Worried about those who have done uni already?
You’ll find that a lot of people in your cohort already have some years of uni (maybe even a degree) under their belt and may be familiar with some of the concepts. It’s totally normal to see your self esteem take a bit of a hit, but don't worry. You'll be fine! These guys have so much knowledge and experience to share with you. It’ll help a lot if you hear from them, as they're really helpful.

Congratulations on making it into the Medical Program! There are plenty of benefits to being a postgraduate student here, even if the majority of your peers are undergraduate/high school leavers. One of the first things you’ll realise is just how much support Bond offers their students, and I encourage you to take up any opportunity you think you’ll benefit from. The transition into medical school is manageable if you have completed another degree, however keep in mind that the integrated course is structured differently to almost every other degree, so it may take some time to get used to. Work hard but don’t forget to enjoy your first year! Socialise, attend as many society events as you possibly can, network with people in other year levels and other courses and explore all that Gold Coast has to offer! Good luck and see you on campus 🙂
I previously completed a Bachelor of Pharmacy, a pharmacy internship year, and started working before applying for Medicine. Having a health background and work experience really goes hand-in-hand with medicine when discussing cases and attending clinical classes. However, my transition back to university was quite challenging, specifically when adjusting to being a full-time student again, and learning through a case-format rather than the traditional 4 to 5 subjects. There is a lot of trial-and-error in finding how you approach learning, but eventually you will discover a method that suits you. Fortunately, the staff at Bond are quite supportive, and provide a lot of guidance, which really helps. A big tip would be to establish a good, supportive network, and to always factor some down-time. This is so important because it is very easy to burn-out and become overwhelmed in Medicine. Always remember your journey to this point, and why you decided to take this path. And, now that you are here, make sure you get involved and have fun, as these 4.5 years will go by quickly.

Hey guys - Congrats on making it into Bond Medicine! I previously completed a 3-year degree in Medical Sciences followed by an Honours degree. Whilst having an undergraduate degree under your belt helps, the transition back to preclinical years at Bond will require experimenting with new study habits and developing clinical skills from day one. First year focuses on bridging the gap between high school leavers and university students, thus the content may be familiar for many science-based backgrounds. You will hear it many times, but space repetition and active recall are pivotal in solidifying the content you learn. Download Anki and get started on it from semester 1! There are plenty of resources out there so ask around and find out from other years what works best. Having said that, first year gives you the flexibility to learn what study skills work best for you. The key is to work smart not hard… well not too hard! Most importantly, prioritise balance! Take the opportunity to meet new people, get involved and enjoy Uni life. Get out as much as you can and explore the Gold Coast. Time flies by so quickly at Bond and you will be halfway through the semester before you know it. Remember, you are all in it together, so support one another as you navigate the highs and lows of medical school! HAVE FUN, enjoy your next few years at Bond and please say hi if you see me around!
Visaka Rohatgi
Congratulations on getting into Medicine at Bond! Coming from an undergraduate degree meant that it was less daunting doing further studies as I was familiar with a university environment, however with a new course it is still important to adapt and try out new study techniques. The staff is very supportive when you have questions about what you are learning and would definitely recommend reaching out to make your university experience more smooth. I would encourage students to involve and immerse yourself in the opportunities Bond has to offer whether it be academic, leadership or social, as these experiences and friendships will form a major part of your life at Bond. These opportunities can really help you develop in both a professional capacity as well as provide immense opportunities for personal growth. All the best for your upcoming years at Bond!

Hi! I’m Victoria, and last year was my first time moving interstate and living away from home. Coming from Melbourne, everything about the Gold Coast was a big change for me: the weather, the public transport system, the food … the list goes on. However, although it was initially daunting, making friends and joining in on social events helped me adjust very quickly, whilst regularly calling my family and close friends ensured that I could still keep in touch with their lives. For those moving interstate, I recommend attending as many of the orientation events as possible (especially medcamp!) and travelling back to visit family once or twice throughout the semester.
ON CAMPUS
Stay connected with family: call, FaceTime, text frequently, if you feel like going home and can do that you should! Sometimes you have to prioritise family Accomodation: go through all your options and carefully decide where you want to stay. Talk to others about their experiences and things about each place that is unique! Connections: Gold Coast and Bond are both unfamiliar places, so a few familiar faces won’t hurt, right? Reach out to your family and friends to see if they know any locals. Explore: Go to different popular destinations and familiar places such as Woolies or Kmart so you feel more in control :)

... Episode Description It can be a bit daunting entering Sem 1 without doing bio. All the content will be new to you, and it may feel like everyone around you has done it in bio or in their previous degree. But this is nothing to worry about. Use the time in 1st year to figure out the best learning style for you as you may find that your previous learning techniques may not work with bio content. Ask your friends how they study this type of content, try out all the techniques, ask your friends for help, have group study sessions and don’t stress about it. Before you know it you will get used to it, all things just feel new in the beginning. And most importantly, have fun! Don’t stress too much, or put too much pressure on yourself in 1st year. Use it to experience the things you always wanted to do but couldn’t, uni and moving away are amazing opportunities for growth so just relax and enjoy it!

2: No Bio, No Worries Anushree Deshpande
... Episode Description I know it's scary to start med without ever studying bio in high school but trust me, it's completely okay! Lecturers and tutors know that not everyone has the same prior knowledge and they help briefly cover all the bio you should know. It can get overwhelming when everyone around you has already done the content before but work at your own pace and find study methods best for you! I know it can feel unfair at times to be the only one trying to fill the gaps in your bio knowledge but you're not alone. Personally, I loved using the Marieb textbook to understand the lecture content. I think it's super important to know that you don't have to always be putting in double the work and effort than others but instead try to work with your peers and lecturers to clarify the key concepts you didn't understand. I know it doesn't seem like it now but getting through first year with no bio and doing all the other fun stuff you plan is very doable. Don't stress yourselves out too much and trust the process! You've got this!

3: No Bio, No Worries Budmi Wijesuriya
... Episode Description Welcome future first years! My name is Budmi and when I started Med, it felt like I was learning a new language for the first time. I didn't do Bio in Year 12 so I lacked the knowledge of even the most basic elements of medicine. This was absolutely overwhelming and daunting at first. But trust me, it does get better! My first tip is to be kind with yourself. If you haven’t done Bio before, it is okay to not know everything at once and ask for help. One of the amazing things here is that lecturers are very willing to clarify any doubts you may have. Another important tip is to form a study group. You can perhaps allocate certain lectures for a person to teach each week. This gives you the opportunity to relearn content and also master certain topics. Finally, it is important to have fun! Give yourself breaks and attend the social events when possible! There are so many clubs to join too, especially for all of you living away from home. I wish you all the very best for your medical journey!

4: No Bio, No Worries Siluni Athauda
... Episode Description Hey everyone! It’s completely normal to feel like you're the only one having to learn more compared to everyone else who've done Bio before. But I can assure you that the challenge is no feat! The first few weeks were pretty difficult for me not because the content was hard but because it seemed like I was the only one learning it for the first time. My biggest word of advice is to remember that although you may not have learnt any of this stuff before, some motivation to put your head down for the first few weeks will help you out for the rest of sem. Don't stress yourself out and always remember that even if you do fall behind, seniors and lecturers are always willing to help. I recommend watching YouTube videos (Armando Hasudungan is my personal fav) and of course anything you’ll need to know for first year is going to be in Marieb. Going through the textbook before lectures will give you a rough idea before about what’s going on! Other than that, from one non bio student to another, you got this and its not as bad as it seems :))

BOND Uni AMSA Team Senior AMSA representative: Harry Tregilgas Junior AMSA representative: Sonali Mohan Community Health and Wellbeing Officer: Maddy Condren
AMSA stands for the Australian Medical Students Association, and their role is to stand up for all of you. They represent the interests of medical students across Australia to the highest level, including to the AMC and federal government. AMSA's mission statement is “connecting, informing, and representing medical students”. AMSA’s policy process is very in-depth, but here’s the short answer. AMSA policy is: An evidence-based opinion on what medical students think on a certain topic – for example voluntary assisted dying Policies are written by medical students, then reviewed by medical students at each university, then discussed and voted on by medical students at every university Policies are brought back to Council to be voted on by each AMSA representative on behalf of their universities.

About
Many people will say that the hardest part about medicine is getting in, and often that’s true. However, medicine is a challenging course which asks a lot of its students. There’s pressure from exams, social life, sleep, pulling you in every direction. Accordingly, mental health can have its ups and downs when you’re in medical school. In order to take care of students MSSBU created the Community Health and Wellbeing Officer position. Their role is to ensure you stay as relaxed as possible, by making enjoyable events and being available to link people with resources if they need. The next event planned is Puppies and Pancakes – in week 12 Guide Dogs Australia will be bringing in some puppies for us to play with and the AMSA team will be making pancakes for all. Next semester there are some exciting changes coming to the mentoring program for first-years – watch this space!

Community Health and Wellbeing is undergoing a little of a renaissance this year, with plenty of fantastic new events planned as well as revisions and changes to the old classics. So far this semester we’ve had the paint and sip – a resounding success where students spent a relaxing few hours painting under the guidance of an instructor with the help of some beverages.

Why do you want to study medicine?” is the age-old question that you’re probably all too familiar with. Thankfully you don’t have to worry about it anymore. But now that you’ve entered med school, a new question will keep you up at night: “So what specialty are you interested in?” Don’t fret though, that’s where the societies come in! Each society is dedicated to a particular field of medicine and they’re eager to share their passion with you. There are several under MSSBU and, throughout the year, they will be hosting heaps of activities. These include parties, volunteering and workshops. Getting involved will help you gain an insight into the fields, so you’ll be one step closer to finding an answer to that question.
