Friendly Reminder - Club Events & Directors/Rep Listings To help clarify how information is handled and ensure it is accurate for the WSN magazine, please utilize the following process: Director and Representative Listings: For updates to the director or representative information, please send all edits or corrections directly to Stormy at the AWSC office.

She makes the necessary changes to the master list. Stormy then sends the final, updated list to me to insert into the monthly WSN editions.

Event Listings: For any events you would like to submit for publication, a completed Event Form (found on awsc.org) must be sent to Stormy

PRESIDENT’S COMMUNIQUE

TAKE A FRIEND SNOWMOBILING: SHARE THE RIDE AND FUN! By: Lori Heideman

B

y the time you are reading this article, I hope that you have had a chance to get out and ride. Winter offers a unique set of outdoor activities and snowmobiling stands out as one of the most exhilarating. If you are considering introducing a friend to this sport, February is the month for it. The International Snowmobile Manufacturers Association has designated the week of February 9, through the 16, as Take a Friend Snowmobiling Week. Ask a friend to go with you on a ride. Show them how snowmobiling is a fun family sport. And then get them hooked on joining a club. Remember, once you join a club, you will never ride alone.

The first step in planning your snowmobile experience is selecting a good location to ride. Look for areas known for their scenic trails or good food stops. Most of our national forests, state parks, and designated snowmobile trails are excellent choices. There are many club-sponsored stops along these trails. Patronize those who sponsor or donate to clubs and club functions or are snowmobilefriendly.

Always remember that when you are asking someone to join you, they may never have been on a snowmobile, keep it safe. Make sure that they have the proper gear, know how to handle the

machine, and know what their own capabilities are. Consider the person’s skill level before setting out. Once on the trail make sure that safety is your number one priority.

The benefits of snowmobiling are plentiful. It is more than just a recreational activity, it’s a way to explore the great outdoors in the winter, connect with nature, and can be a great way to engage in fun and challenging adventures. As we all know, you can see areas of the state on a snowmobile that are sometimes inaccessible on foot or by car. One of the reasons I snowmobile is because I get to be out in the fresh air and see nature at its finest.

Sometimes asking someone to join you is the best way to get them involved. Show them what being a snowmobiler is all about.

It’s not just about getting to ride in a beautiful setting, it’s about forming those friendships that last a lifetime. It’s about sharing the passion of this sport. And finally, it’s about preserving a sport for future generations to enjoy as much as we do.

Taking a friend snowmobiling can be an exciting way to enjoy winter together while exploring nature’s beauty. By preparing adequately, prioritizing safety, and embracing the thrill of adventure, you will create an experience that both you and your friend will cherish for years. So, gear up, hit the trails, and make some unforgettable memories.

Once hooked on this sport, ask them to join a club. Make sure to include the new members in your activities and make them feel welcome and valued. They may become one of the club’s greatest assets. Let’s all find one friend this year; take them snowmobiling; and ask them to join a club!

ENSURING A STRONG FUTURE FOR YOUR CLUB By: Randy Murdock

H

ow strong is your club? It’s important to remember that a club’s health is directly tied to its membership. A financially secure club doesn’t mean much if its members are aging out. At the January directors meeting in Siren, we discussed the impact of fee increases on passes and registrations. Afterward, the conversation shifted to the future of clubs as they age. What does your club’s future look like in 5-10 years? Are there enough young members to step in and keep it thriving?

The AWSC offers two excellent programs, KAOS and Nex Gen Riders, which are among the best youth initiatives in the country.

However, these programs alone won’t be enough to fill your membership roster. To understand what it takes to attract and retain Millennials and Gen Z members in our clubs, I researched some strategies online. Hopefully, you’ll find these insights helpful in growing and sustaining your club’s membership.

5) Assist them in discovering their “WHY.” I discussed this in my MS article, “My Why.” While it may be challenging to define someone else’s purpose, you can begin by sharing your own.

6) Value is something I’ve always strongly advocated for. The benefits you gain from being a member should far exceed the cost of joining and staying involved. Some clubs even host events or trips for non-snowmobiling members, such as summer campouts or visits to water parks, etc.

1) Offer a variety of engaging activities, including during your meetings. Keep them fun and lively by introducing occasional interactive elements of surprise to break up the routine and keep everyone interested.

2) Proactive member recruitment is key. Sometimes, it’s as simple as asking someone to join. Consider hosting membership drives and offering incentives, like a free membership for the first year, to encourage sign-ups.

3) Social media is crucial. While it may be repetitive, it’s a fact—social networks have largely replaced traditional social clubs. The most effective way to find new members and communicate with both current and potential members is through social media platforms.

4) Prevent burnout among leaders by encouraging leadership rotation. Acknowledge and show appreciation for their contributions, and actively promote and support the involvement of youth in leadership positions.

7) Member engagement is key. Once someone becomes a member, keep them involved and active. Nominate them for roles within the club and support them in achieving their goals.

8) Effective leadership is crucial. A strong leader actively engages and motivates members, sets clear goals and roles, delegates tasks, and ensures that new members feel valued and appreciated.

BUYING YOUR TRAIL PASS(ES): DID YOU KNOW YOU HAVE IMPORTANT INFORMATION AT YOUR FINGERTIPS? You can look at your AWSC MEMBERSHIP NUMBER on the AWSC website at www.awsc.org/About-Us/Member-Lookup / or you can locate it on the label of this magazine in the top right-hand corner of the mailing label. Once you have your AWSC member number you can order your trail pass online yourself at www.awsc.org/Trail-Pass-Registration/Order-Passes-Online. THIS IS THE FASTEST WAY FOR YOU TO GET YOUR TRAIL PASSES. They are also available by filling out the order form in the front of the magazine. As a last resort, I would call the office, to order them.

Keep in mind your member number does not change from year to year, keep it in a safe place.

Members if you have not ordered your trail passes yet and plan on doing so by calling the office, please be courteous and thoughtful of our time and have your AWSC membership number (making sure it is current), your registration numbers of your snowmobile (making sure they are current) and your credit card. Phone-in orders are very time-consuming and take away precious time from our office staff. A call that goes smoothly only takes approximately five minutes to process, we have experienced some that are 1520 minutes long. They usually involve running to the garage for

registration numbers, finding a wallet, etc. Please help us by having your information ready!

AWSC ANNUAL SPRING CONVENTION - PLAN TO ATTEND The Annual Meeting and Spring Convention are being planned for March 28-30, at the Oneida Hotel & Conference Center, Green Bay. Information on rooms, registration, election of executive board, and the Director’s meeting was sent out in mid-January via email to club officers and via USPS to your membership chair of the club. he queen is officially off and running! As I continue to pray for snow across the state of Wisconsin, our amazing clubs have been compromising with Mother Nature and continuing to hold their events by vehicle and UTV. With all the hard work they put in, I’m glad they aren’t giving up!

We kicked off January with the AWSC Director’s meeting where I had the opportunity to speak with state representative, Chanz Green about his hopes for the future of snowmobiling. Thank you for attending Chanz. I was also excited to announce my sample of a 501(c)3 application that is now available to all clubs. If you have further questions about the benefit or process of obtaining a 501c3 please don’t hesitate to reach out. I finished off the weekend by getting to see the AWSC Miss Snowflake sled for the first time... man am I a lucky girl! Thank you to all of the AWSC Miss Snowflake supporters Braap Wraps for donating her time to design the wrap, Tom Popp of Unique Signs and Designs for spending 15 hours wrapping my sled in perfection, Donahue Super Sports for donating the use of the Ski-Doo sled for the year, K&M Sales & Service for the helmet and boots to keep me safe, DSG Outerwear for the winter suit to keep me warm and looking good, Airtec Sports for the saddle bag to hold all my gear while on the trails, Floe International for the trailer to haul my sled across the state, and Duwayne Kreager Insurance for helping fund me on this year as Miss Snowflake. What you do for this program is truly amazing and I couldn’t be more proud and excited to represent wonderful people like you! THANK YOU! Following the Director’s meeting I made some visits to the Prentice Bushbenders, Phillips Chapperals, and Chetek Snow Flyers & ATV Cruzers to present the importance of AWSC to the future leaders of snowmobiling as they work on receiving their snowmobile safety licenses. Seeing their excitement to ride and be a member of a club never gets old! Next stop was in Rosholt, WI, to help with the fundraiser with the Blizzard Busters for their year ahead. The Ride with the Cup was truly a trip as many snowmobilers traveled from Wausau to Eagle River to deliver the championship cup to the World Championship Derby that took place all weekend. WOW, can those Derby guys ride? I had the honor of beginning the races as I took a lap around the track during the national anthem and later presented the winners with their trophies.

ake a Friend Snowmobiling Week is this February 8-17. This program is a great way to introduce someone who has not been snowmobiling before or has very little experience behind a sled. This allows new riders to feel what it’s like on a sled and enjoy winter in a brand new way that they may not otherwise get to.

This week is all about teaching proper safety, having fun, and encouraging people to join a club. During this time it is encouraged to bring someone on a ride along and show them the fun that comes with the sport. However, the average ride you are used to may come off as exhausting and overwhelming to a new rider, make sure to take frequent breaks, check in on them, and potentially shorten the typical ride you do with your group to increase the possibility of your friend making a consistent return to the recreation activity.

Take the time to stop and support snowmobile-friendly businesses during your ride. These businesses play a vital role in enabling us to enjoy the sport we love and often serve as gathering spots to meet other riders who can warmly welcome your friend to the snowmobiling community.

Additionally, use this opportunity to emphasize the importance of our landowners and show them the respect they deserve for allowing us to use their land for our favorite pastime. This is also a chance to challenge common misconceptions about snowmobilers and highlight the positive aspects of the sport.

We can grow and strengthen the snowmobiling community by helping add to it!

BUILDING TRAILS TOGETHER: SKI-DOO GRANTS & LANDOWNER SUPPORT

A

ccording to the Ski-Doo pass grant website, the pass grant was created to support clubs and volunteers who work tirelessly to improve, grow, and promote snowmobiling in their communities. In the past three years, the Snow P.A.S.S. has contributed nearly 1.2 million to 240 clubs and organizations to fund various projects and snowmobile safety initiatives.

Some of these projects include snowmobile trail construction and maintenance, bridge construction and repair, backcountry snowmobile safety classes and equipment as well as a host of others.

One project approved this past year is a new section of the Jack Pine Savages trail in Adams County. This new section brings together a much-needed loop to include restaurant stops, a gas

station, and a motel. It creates a loop that can be used as a shorter route for those who do not want to be out all day. Including these types of stops, creates a safer route for all.

In addition to the Ski-Doo pass grant, the new landowners were instrumental in creating this section of the trail. Without the generosity and approval from the Patrick McIntyre family, to use the Falk Family farm this trail would not be a reality. The landowners worked with the club to create this trail. The trail travels through some cropland and into a wooded section all on the Falk property.

AWSC DIRECTORS MEETING AWSC WINTER DIRECTORS MEETING TAKES PLACE IN SIREN

he Winter Director’s Meeting was held in Siren, Wisconsin.

While there was no snow, that didn’t stop the AWSC and attending directors and reps from having fun before accomplishing business. Bus tours, raffles, and dinners were all part of the entertainment.

Burnett County Board Chair, Don Taylor, welcomed everyone to the area before the director’s meeting got underway.

Thank you to everyone who attended and thank you to all who took part in planning this productive and fun AWSC event. The following is a photo look at the event along with the AWSC Executive Board and Committee reports.

President, Lori Heideman Lori thanked Sue Smedegard and the crew from Burnett County for an awesome weekend, even without snow. She reported on a snowmobile club that had been audited by the state raffle commission and reminded everyone to make sure they followed the rules and requirements included with their raffle license. She attended the Illinois Association of Snowmobile Clubs’ convention along with three of the Next Gen Riders to talk about our Next Gen program and a new national program for that age group. She reminded everyone that if you get a letter from American Income Life regarding our death benefit, you do not need to send the card back to receive the benefit, only if you are interested in talking to a representative about additional insurance.

Vice President, Randy Murdock Randy reported on his research on the Corporate Transparency Act that found 501c organizations and those who would qualify as one are exempt from the filing requirement. At this time there is a court-ordered injunction on the BOI reporting. He said the HR committee is working on some guidelines and duties.

Secretary, Sue Smedegard Sue talked about the Travel Wisconsin snow report website and reminded those who post trail conditions to do it regularly and accurately. She commended clubs on promoting their events and successes on FaceBook, but to please include your city and county.

She reminded the directors and reps to share all the information from these meetings with your clubs and their members.

Treasurer, Steve Clark Steve presented the financial report, which was approved. He reported that the executive board would be sharing information soon on their recommendation for a dues increase to be voted on at the annual meeting in March. It would include information on what expenses have increased in recent years and suggestions on how to address them. Even after increasing the banquet tickets to $50, we lost money on last fall’s Workshop. In the discussion that followed, a consensus from the directors supported a $5 increase.

Executive Director, Mike Holden Mike encouraged clubs to be welcoming when they get offers from new volunteers. He announced the Snowmobile Recreation Council (SRC) will be meeting on February 6, in Arbor Vitae, with a Zoom option available. He talked about the work the SRC is doing on bridge damage caused by overloading and cost overruns on grants.

Membership, Joe Kniseley Joe announced the membership committee supports the recommendation for a dues increase. He gave current membership numbers that show both members’ and commercial members’ numbers were up from last year. There will again be a drawing for all clubs that increase their membership and commercial members by at least 10 percent.

Office Manager, Stormy Hovey Stormy gave out the details for the Convention on March 28-30, in Green Bay. Due to increasing costs, the executive board has agreed to raise the convention registration to $50 along with $50 for banquet tickets. They are continuing to look at all the options that could be used to lower the cost of holding these events. We are charging much less than similar events by other organizations. She reminded everyone about the need for those voting for your club to return the voting delegate forms by March 7.

Miss Snowflake, Jamey Crotteau Jamey revealed the new wrap for her snowmobile and thanked all her sponsors. Contact her if you would like her to attend your event. Follow her on the Miss Snowflake FaceBook page and share her posts. As an accountant, she is working on guiding clubs interested in filing for 501(c)3 status. Jamey is also working on a Miss Snowflake flyer explaining the program.

Youth/KAOS Youth reps talked about the activities they will be having at the convention and their leadership weekend to be held on February 7 & 8.

Scholarship, Theresa Braudt Theresa announced they have received 38 applications and due to cost savings initiatives, they will be limiting the number of recipients that are provided with rooms at the convention.

The current officers announced their intent to run for another term, with bios included in the February magazine. Anyone else interested in being placed on the ballot at the convention should contact Dave. Nominations will be accepted from the floor.

Gary reminded those making entries in SNARS to make sure they use the correct equipment number to get properly reimbursed.

Once out grooming, make sure your groomer is shown in the geofence and notify Groomer Tracking Systems if changes need to be made.

Kate reported that the committee is working on changes to the AWSC brochures and updating the AWSC show booth.

Multi-Use Trails, Don Mrotek Don again addressed the issue of why ATVs don’t need a trail pass.

Any ATV trail pass revenue would go into the ATV/UTV segregated fund which has plenty of funds and would not benefit the snowmobile program.

Environmental/Bylaws, Dave Newman Dave talked about the draft SCORP (Statewide Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan) recently released by the DNR. This is a plan that is updated every five years and needed when state agencies apply for federal grants. He shared some of the statistics found in the document which showed snowmobiling is still popular when compared with other forms of outdoor recreation. Dave reported that the monarch butterfly is being listed as threatened.

Audit, Wally Thill Wally reported that the committee met, and everything was in order.

Fundraising, Dean Wandel Dean thanked everyone who sold raffle calendars, with 1516 turned in by the meeting. They are looking at some alterations for next year. Next year club and personal ads will be sold for $25 and will be due by July 1. The $100 raffle tickets will be available at the convention.

Legislative, Sam Landes Sam reported they were not yet able to get a meeting with key legislators but have some planned for mid-January. They will propose to them the registration and trail pass increases presented at the fall director’s meeting. Other options can be considered, but we need to go for what we can get passed. More information will

Snowmobile Friendly Communities, Don Hamilton Don reported that for the seventh year of the program, they have one renewal and seven new applications. He encouraged all clubs and communities to consider applying.

ACSA Report, Dave Newman Dave reported on some of the national issues they are watching and talked about the region rides and meetings they are holding in Minnesota and Wyoming. He also invited everyone to join ACSA Snow Business events which will be held on Zoom once each month with a variety of interesting topics. 2025 CANDIDATE PROFILES FOR RE-ELECTION Lori Heideman, AWSC President I am the current president of the AWSC. I have decided to run for a third term. I feel that there is more for me to accomplish within the AWSC. I have some ideas and have been working on changes that I feel will benefit our programs. I feel that in my first two terms, I was mainly focused on the ISC in Green Bay in June.

This was a very successful event; however, I feel it’s time to get down to business and make some much-needed changes within our organization. I have some ideas to make some of our programs much better and more efficient.

A bit of background on myself. I was the secretary of my local club, the Kellner Knights for four years as well as the vice president for four years. In the early 90s I was on the committee that brought the snow show to Stevens Point. On that committee, I assisted with the vendors and the hospitality room. In 2000, I became the rep for Wood County and in 2002, I transitioned to the Wood County Director position.

I was the Wood County Director until 2014. In 2014 I became the vice president for the AWSC. During that time, I attended VIP rides, ACSA DC Fly-Ins, and ISC, as well as being involved with the KAOS program. I also assisted our association coordinator with the snowmobile-friendly communities program.

In 2023, I became the president of the association. Before becoming president, I made it a mission of mine to get out to talk to many clubs and counties. I feel that club members know who the association is but have no idea what we do or how we can help our membership. Through that outreach, I have learned many things, not only about myself and the association but about our clubs and our membership.

It’s been a privilege to serve as your AWSC Vice President over the past year. During this time, we’ve tackled many important issues and initiatives, and there is still much to accomplish. I am eager to see the projects I helped initiate reach their full potential. I would be honored to have your vote for another term as AWSC Vice President.

Sue Smedegard, AWSC Secretary I have served as the AWSC Secretary since March 2011. I served as co-chair for the International Snowmobile Congress 2024, hosted

by Wisconsin. I am the secretary and treasurer of the Iron Dog Brigade. I serve on the Governor’s Snowmobile Recreation Council, and the Department of Tourism Office of Outdoor Recreation Committee, and serve as liaison between the AWSC and the Wisconsin Department of Tourism, as well as the Wisconsin ATV Association. I was honored to receive the AWSC President’s Cup in 2018. I am a long-time officer of my club and county association.

I serve as the Burnett County representative and secretary to NoRTAC (Northern Regional Trail Advisory Committee) and am acting chair of the Gandy Dancer Trail Commission. I organize Miss Snowflake’s participation in the World Championship Water Cross Races each year, and man the AWSC trailer at Hay Days each September. I am the administrator of the AWSC Facebook page, which is kept up to date regularly.

It has been a priority for me to get the minutes and other information out to directors, representatives, and members quickly for use in their counties and clubs. I look forward to continuing to work with our very dedicated executive board as we work through the coming year.

Steve Clark, AWSC Treasure I am once again running for the position of AWSC Treasurer. I have had the opportunity over the past year to serve as your Treasurer.

I have learned so much over the year about the inner workings of the AWSC and have also had the opportunity to meet so many of you.

I will continue to talk to our membership. I believe that listening, taking into consideration ideas and change are an important part of this organization. Will we always agree? Perhaps not, but we can learn from each other and make snowmobiling a much better sport for the next generation.

For those that may not know me, my family and I reside in Southern WI. I have been an active member of the Oregon SnoBlazers since 2005, serving as club treasurer and membership chair from 2012 to 2021. I have served as Dane County Council of Snowmobile Clubs Treasurer from 2014-2021. Since 2022, I have been the AWSC Dane County Representative, also serving on the Safety and Education Committee. Although not my hometown club, I am also a member of the Mercer Sno-Goers.

I want to say thank you for the past support that I have received and hope that you will continue to support me this next year. If you have questions or ideas, let me know.

Additionally, attending International Snowmobile Conventions over the last couple of years has expanded my understanding and furthered my commitment from an international perspective, and am looking forward to attending ISC 2025 in Prince Edward Island!

I am running as AWSC Treasurer for a second term and feel there is more to be accomplished as we continue to look at the budget numbers and look for ways to cut costs to keep AWSC sustainable for years to come. I look forward to continuing to work with the membership and the directors, collaborating to form a balanced budget that is reasonable for all.

I have enjoyed representing you as an executive board member over the past year and would be honored to serve you for another term and would appreciate your support.

he Plymouth Snow Rangers will team up again with Midwest Snocross and host its 47th annual Budweiser Classic Race of Champions February 7-9, 2024. Check out some of the best snocross action in the Midwest. We are located 1/4 mile south of the intersection of Highway 57 & 23 in Plymouth, Wisconsin.

The club is set to run a three-day event starting Friday with practice from 2-5 with a full race schedule on Saturday and Sunday starting at 8 am both days. Spectators will have a full line of bleachers for an amazing upfront view, along with a large heated building with multiple large-screen TVs. A full menu of concessions will include both food and drinks all day long.

Saturday evening Brent Bel will host free music starting at 5:30 pm with beverages for sale the entire evening as well. The series

n 1968 Textron acquired Polaris after the company’s original owners sold it due to increasing demand for snowmobiles.

Polaris’s snowmobile sales skyrocketed in the 1960s, but the company struggled in the 1980s.

In 2017 Textron acquired Arctic Cat for $247 million. The all-terrain vehicles and side-by-side models branded as Arctic Cat were either discontinued or rebranded as Textron. The snowmobile models kept the Arctic Cat brand.

he Deer Run Snow Riders proudly displayed vintage Ariens snowmobiles from the 1970s. Ariens Co., based in Brillion, WI, manufactured snowmobiles from 1969 to 1972. The Snowmobile Hall of Fame in Saint Germain, WI, offers a captivating glimpse into snowmobiling history, making it a perfect venue for this exhibit.

SNOWMOBILE SAFETY EDUCATION CLASS WAS A HUGE SUCCESS! By: Carrie Leinonen, Marketing (December 7 & 8, 2024)

T

he Minocqua Forest Riders (minocquaforestriders. org) and Northern Hornshoe Trails Snowmobile (northernhornshoe.org) clubs sponsored a snowmobile safety education class this past December 7 & 8. It was held at the Area 31 facility in Minocqua and was attended by fifteen youths and two adults. The purpose of the class is to reduce the potential for snowmobile-related incidents, injuries, and fatalities; to reduce the potential for conflict between participants, landowners, and other resource users; and to promote safe, responsible, and ethical use of the environment and our resources.

The snowmobile safety education class, maintained by the Wisconsin DNR, was hosted by DNR Warden Sam Eagan (Oneida Co). Class training was led by our own instructors Keith and Debbie Checolinski along with Matt Lindborg (Apprentice Instructor, NHTSC). They reviewed the DNR-provided student booklet and lesson plans over the two-day program (nine hours) and testing was provided. Each student passed the class and will receive a snowmobile safety certificate from the DNR that they will need to keep with them as they snowmobile in the future. (Any person who is born on or after Jan. 1, 1985, and who has reached the age of 12, must have completed and received a snowmobile safety certificate to operate a snowmobile in Wisconsin.)

The Minocqua Forest Riders launched their “Ride Right” Safe Riders Program in early 2024. The goal of this initiative is to inform, educate, and promote a safe and responsible snowmobile riding culture for today’s and future snowmobilers here in the Northwoods of Wisconsin.

In leveraging content from; the ISMA Safe Riders Program, AWSC, Let’s Minocqua Visitors Bureau, and other resources, we were able to develop a single online resource for club members and visitors. BATAVIA HILL & GULLY RIDERS DONATE GROOMER TO HALL OF FAME By: Paul Hartmann - Hill & Gully Riders Trailmaster

T

he Batavia Hill & Gully Riders Snowmobile Club of Sheboygan County donated its groomer to the Snowmobile Hall of Fame in St. Germain, WI. Club members coordinated the delivery with museum director Jamie Zeller, transporting the groomer to the museum on November 8.

The 1985 groomer, built by S&W Sales Inc. of Manawa, WI, is now part of an outdoor display on the museum grounds.

The club originally purchased the groomer new and used it to maintain ten miles of funded trails until 1994, when grooming operations were outsourced to the Beechwood Night Fliers Snowmobile Club. The groomer continued to be used for a three-mile club trail section until 2020, when Schwartz Septic Service, the current grooming contractor, took over. Schwartz had been managing the ten-mile funded trail since the 20052006 season.

Organized in 1972, the Batavia Hill & Gully Riders celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2022, marking decades of dedication to the snowmobiling community.

CLUB FLASHBACK CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF HODAG SNO-TRAILS

H

odag Sno-Trails (HST) was started over 50 years ago and is celebrating our 50th official anniversary this season.

HST has over 150 miles of trails they are responsible for in and around Rhinelander. They are part of the Oneida County Snowmobile Council (made up of nine clubs with trail responsibility).

Over the years, some smaller organizations that were taking care of trails in the Rhinelander, United Trail Groomers and Snowbound Country merged into Hodag Sno-Trails Inc. HST was one of the founding clubs that became part of the Oneida County Snowmobile Council in 1974. Much of the 70s and 80s were spent developing the trail system, building bridges, and working with the County Forestry Department on the “overall Snowmobile Program.”

One of our most dedicated club members, Larry Dorich was instrumental in developing the trail system from pathways to the funded trails we have today. Larry was active in the club for over 45 years from trail development, and groomer driver (AWSC Groomer of the Year), to club operations. In 2019, the club designated part of the trail system in his honor, because saying thank you is not enough. If you are in the northwoods, check out the Larry Dorich Trail that connects Rhinelander to McNaughton.

Club membership climbed in the early years from being in the 20s to today the club has over 200 active members. Club members help support the process with LUA’s, trail marking, brushing, fundraising activities, snowmobile safety, annual map development, and distribution and grooming.

SINISSIPPI TRAIL HAWKS CELEBRATE 50 YEARS By: Rochelle Schmidt, Secretary On September 14, 2024, Sinissippi Trail Hawks Snowmobile Club in Hustisford, WI, celebrated our 50-year anniversary. This event also included a special trail dedication for Melvin Hundt, one of our original members.

This event brought together family and friends to reflect on Melvin’s accomplishments during his years in our club. He attended meetings, served on the board, and was a “top seller” of raffle tickets for fundraising. His 1973 snowmobile and gear were on display demonstrating his love for John Deere.

Since 1974, our club has been dedicated to providing safe, local snowmobile trails for snowmobile enthusiasts of all ages.

Fundraising for local scholarships and supporting community events. This event was no different. We had special guests, Lori Heideman, President of the Association of Wisconsin Snowmobile Clubs, and Andrew Nussbaum, Wisconsin Tourism Development Specialist, who spoke as well as landowners, and town and county officials, and are proud members of past and present. Many reminisced about snowmobile experiences, their love for the sport, and what it means to them. There were laughs and tears as years of photos were on display showing generations of families in our club.

It was a wonderful celebration of how far our club has come and what the future holds.

Fundraising is an integral part of the continued success of the club. Raffles are a staple of ways for the club to generate income to support HST expenses. One of the most popular annual events is the Ice Golf event, tied with a meat raffle. The nearly worldfamous event brings over 40 teams to Lake George every March.

The strongest challenge the club faces is maintaining the existing trail system. With the land market volatile, there are landowner changes every year. Those property hand-offs create situations where trails need to be rerouted on a property or around a property where the trail once crossed. Building the relationship with our landowners, and towns is so important to keep the wonderful trail network we all enjoy.
