PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Dear Alumni and Friends, As the old adage goes, time flies when you’re having fun! I can’t believe it has already been a year since I became president of MSOE. Thank you to everyone for making me and my family feel at home in Milwaukee. We are impressed with your passion for MSOE and your pride in Milwaukee; we are finding both are well-placed.

I am especially appreciative to all who attended my Inauguration Ceremony and related events throughout that week. It was much more celebration and pageantry than I expected, but I will certainly cherish the memories of those humbling experiences and the opportunity to meet so many MSOE supporters. Also, thank you to all who sent well wishes for the future of MSOE. This fall we will be getting underway with developing a comprehensive strategic plan for our university. This will be an exciting and extremely important effort, as we will define a vision for MSOE’s future along with a set of actions for achieving this.

The energy and effort put forth by our students, faculty and staff is inspiring. No one on campus shies away from a challenge and they continually go the extra mile to achieve success. I’ve seen that demonstrated time and again in the classrooms and laboratories, on a variety of athletic and academic competition teams, and in many personal endeavors.

Dr. Agustin “Gus” Ramirez MSOE Regent Dr. Gus Ramirez is an award-winning business professional who also has been recognized for his civic achievements. He believes that giving back to the community is paramount to making a positive impact in the world.

Ramirez is the executive chairman of HUSCO International, a global leader in the development and manufacture of hydraulic and electro-hydraulic controls for off-highway applications. HUSCO has more than 1,300 employees including more than 300 degreed engineers in locations across the globe. HUSCO and Ramirez are strong supporters of scholarships for students at MSOE and have hired a significant number of MSOE graduates.

Prior to leading the management team that ultimately bought HUSCO International, Ramirez worked for AMCA International and FMC Corp.

His career has long been integrated with his dedication to improving educational opportunities for students throughout Milwaukee and the world. He has served on the MSOE Board of Regents since 2004. In 2015, the Agustin A. Ramirez Jr. Family Foundation launched the Ramirez Lean Scholars Program, a joint initiative between MSOE and the Medical College of Wisconsin to train a new generation of scholars in Lean health care management techniques.

The foundation also invests in schools around the world so young people have equal access to life-changing education.

Since 2003, they’ve helped build Christian schools in Central America that have impacted more than 100,000 students.

Closer to home, Ramirez was the initial funder of Schools That Can Milwaukee and has funded major expansions at the United Community Center, Milwaukee College Prep, St. Marcus and Carmen School of Science and Technology.

The foundation’s most significant investment in education, the new St. Augustine Preparatory Academy, is a K4-12 nondenominational Christian school slated to open in summer 2017 in Milwaukee. It will ultimately serve more than 2,500 students each year.

Ramirez holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in aerospace engineering from Georgia Tech, an MBA from Harvard University and an Honorary Doctor of Engineering from MSOE.

Ramirez and his wife Becky have three grown children, Austin, Abby and Anna, who share their passion for providing education to minority, low-income children. They enjoy engagement in church activities, socializing, traveling and staying active with biking, golf and hiking.

Building a Tuk-Tuk Bridge Unexpected challenges are a part of life – and almost guaranteed on the job. It’s a lesson that’s hard to teach in a classroom, but one that MSOE students were able to learn in the field by solving real life problems in real time on an Engineers Without Borders-USA bridge building project in Guatemala.

A national organization with both professional and student chapters, EWB-USA empowers communities to meet their most basic human needs by addressing water supply, sanitation, energy, agriculture, civil works and structural challenges. Communities partner with EWB-USA to find appropriate solutions.

Ten students representing five majors participated in the trip, that took place Feb. 22–March 6 in the community of El Temal, Guatemala.

Over the past 11 years, the EWB-MSOE chapter led by co-advisors Drs. Doug Stahl and Todd Davis has completed ten projects in Guatemala. By partnering with EWB-USA’s Wisconsin Professional Chapter and Milwaukee-area engineers who serve as mentors to the students, EWB-MSOE has been able to do complex structural projects, including a vehicular bridge at Chumisa that was one of EWB-USA’s Premier Projects for 2016.

Joined by Davis and three professional mentors in El Temal, students set out to design and build a cable suspended bridge that would be passable by tuk-tuks—three-wheeled taxis that are commonly used for transportation but unable to travel long distances.

MSOE senior civil engineering major Logan Bertling served as project manager. “Normally this style of bridge can only accommodate pedestrians, livestock and motorcycles,” he said.

“We knew it would require many modifications.”

Designed specifically for tuk-tuk travel, the bridge has several unique features. It is 50 percent wider than a typical pedestrian bridge and, in order to reduce the slope for tuktuks, the cables are tighter than usual; a concrete and stone structure weighing 200,000 pounds anchors the cables at each end of the bridge.

When students arrived on the job site they discovered the excavation and soil conditions were different than planned.

This required them to redesign portions of the bridge while on site within the constraints of schedule and materials purchased. “The majority of time we were working behind schedule and there was worry that we may not be able to complete the bridge before flying home,” Bertling said.

About 50 area residents joined students each day and the bridge was ultimately completed on time.

Highlights of the trip were captured on video by senior technical communication major Maya George. After a week in El Temal, George had more than 40 GBs of video footage. “I tried to capture anything and everything when I wasn’t helping with the actual construction,” she said.

George’s video will be used for promotional and educational purposes. “Hopefully the video will increase EWB membership and donations so that they can continue to do the good work they have done for so long.”

HIGHLIGHTS Introducing girls to STEM According to the National Center for Education Statistics, only 31.3 percent of STEM-related degrees/certificates were earned by females in the United States in 2014-15. To help increase those numbers, MSOE offers programs geared toward young females to introduce them to STEM fields.

the participants indicated they planned to study engineering in college, and 43 percent plan to study mechanical engineering specifically. The project was led by MSOE’s student chapters of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and Society for Women Engineers (SWE).

This spring, more than 70 middle and high school girls participated in a STEM workshop at the Great Lakes Biomedical Conference, sponsored by the International Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and co-organized by MSOE and UWM. By recording their own brain activity, using ultrasounds and learning about Internet privacy, the girls learned about and experienced the engineering behind these applications.

The GE Girls at MSOE program is a week-long experience that features a dynamic curriculum around physics, math, chemistry, computer science and electronics. Middle school girls

Another two dozen high school girls participated in the FLAME Project (Female Leaders Advocating for Mechanical Engineering) at MSOE to learn more about mechanical engineering. They toured MSOE’s laboratories; heard from faculty and students about careers; and designed and built self-propelled cars using common household items such as a mousetrap, CDs, string and paint sticks.

In a post-event survey, 81 percent of

participated in learning exercises at MSOE and GE facilities that are intended to spark their interest in building engines, understanding combustion, electronic circuitry, medical imaging, Lean principles and even the chemistry know-how needed to create lip gloss and ice cream. GE Girls partners in southeastern Wisconsin include GE Healthcare, GE Power, GE Women’s Network, MSOE, as well as Milwaukee Public Schools, Waukesha School System and Shorewood School District.

Students win national business competitions Eighteen MSOE students placed in the top three of their respective competitions at the 2017 Wisconsin Future Business Leaders of America/Phi Beta Lambda (FBLA/PBL) State Leadership Conference. The winning students, all members of MSOE’s PBL chapter, next competed at the PBL National Leadership Conference.

Students came home from the state conference with 33 awards in 22 categories and swept the Cyber Security competition. They earned 23 awards at the national conference, and the chapter received Gold Seal Recognition and national Diamond Chapter status. MSOE PBL advisor and Rader School of Business instructor Dr. Katrina Moskalik was also honored, being named Outstanding State Advisor of the Year.

Competitive events included both written examinations and judged demonstrations in business and information technology subjects.

MSOE student named New Face of Engineering Desarae Echevarria has been named one of the 2017 New Faces of Engineering – College Edition by DiscoverE (formerly National Engineers Week Foundation). Echevarria is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering at MSOE. She also is a student-athlete, participating in cross country and track & field; a member of the engineering honor society Tau Beta Pi and Global Brigades. New Faces of Engineering – College Edition recognizes engineering students who have dedicated themselves to using their skills and education to help bring about a better world. Echevarria was nominated for the award by the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering (NACME).

Students win CSWEA Global Water Stewardship Design Competition Karissa Brunette, Guissel Davila, Finn Finucane, Lila Johnson and Nick Kallmyer took first place in the Global Water Stewardship category of the Central States Water Environment Association (CSWEA) Student Design Competition. They prepared a design for the wastewater collection and treatment system in the coastal community of Dominical, Costa Rica. Existing sanitation problems are being compounded as the area becomes more developed. The students developed a solution to construct a centralized treatment system with a complete collection system and are traveling to Costa Rica this summer to accompany the Global Water Stewardship team for site analysis and investigations.

Dr. Patrick Jung honored by state of Iowa Dr. Patrick J. Jung was honored by the state of Iowa for his article, “Lonely Sentinel: A Military History of Fort Madison, 18081813,” which was published in The Annals of Iowa, summer 2016. Jung, who is a professor in MSOE’s Humanities, Social Science and Communication Department, accepted an Honorable Mention for the 2017 Throne Aldrich Award from Iowa’s governor, Terry E. Branstad. This award recognizes the author of the most significant article on Iowa history in a professional history journal during the previous calendar year.

Wisconsin Poet Laureate visits MSOE Wisconsin Poet Laureate Karla Huston gave a poetry reading on April 28 in the Grohmann Museum. The event was sponsored by the Humanities, Social Science and Communication Department. Huston shared her prize-winning poem, Theory of Lipstick and other selections. In 2013 she received an Outstanding Achievement Award from the Wisconsin Library Association for her collection of the same title.

MSOE offered Deep Learning Institute with NVIDIA You’ve heard of self-driving cars and computers that can diagnose cancer. You can ask your phone what song is playing on the radio. Have you wondered what makes those things possible? The technology behind it is called deep learning, a type of artificial intelligence, and it has moved from being a research topic to something with application in nearly every aspect of society. It is one of the fastest-growing fields in technology. “MSOE recognizes the impact that artificial intelligence and deep learning are having in all areas related to our degree programs in engineering, business and nursing,” said President John Walz, Ph.D. “We want to be a national educational leader in this transformative technology space.” MSOE recently offered the NVIDIA Deep Learning Institute in conjunction with NVIDIA and Dedicated Computing. More than 50 Milwaukee-area business professionals learned alongside MSOE professors and students.

They solidified concepts with a hands-on lab where they trained, modified and tested their own deep neural network on an image classification problem.

Dr. Ron Gerrits ’94 elected president of Human Anatomy and Physiology Society Last year Dr. Ron Gerrits ’94, professor and Master of Science in Perfusion program director, was elected to the position of president-elect of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS), an international professional organization dedicated to the teaching of anatomy and physiology. This Terry Thompson, 2016-17 HAPS president (right), passes the year he took over as president gavel to Dr. Ron Gerrits ’94. of the society. HAPS includes more than 1,700 members from high schools, two- and four-year colleges, universities and private businesses in the United States and throughout the world. Their conferences and courses help members update their knowledge, improve technical/pedagogical skills, investigate new technologies for the laboratory/classroom, as well as network with an international contingent of peers.

Hall of fame recognition Dr. Larry Fennigkoh, ’74, ’86, P.E. has been named to the 2017 class of the American College of Clinical Engineering (ACCE) Clinical Engineering Hall of Fame for his pioneering work in developing a medical device inventory inclusion algorithm that significantly reduced the maintenance and regulatory burden for many of the nation’s hospitals. He also is being recognized for his application of human factors principles in device incident investigations and the reduction of medical error. Fennigkoh is a biomedical engineering professor in MSOE’s Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department.

Outstanding educator Douglas J. Nelson, P.E. has received the 2017 Bill Boyle Outstanding Educator Award from the Central States Water Environment Association (CSWEA). Nelson is an assistant professor in MSOE’s Civil and Architectural Engineering and Construction Management Department who specializes in design courses for fire protection and plumbing. The award recognizes Nelson’s contributions in advancing knowledge, education and water quality improvements, and his development of future water environment professionals.

Faculty and staff honored at MSOE Dr. Chunping Xie, associate professor in the Mathematics Department, was chosen by students to receive the Oscar Werwath Distinguished Teacher Award. The award was established by the university in 1967 to recognize excellence in teaching. On their ballots, students described Xie as one of the most approachable professors in the Mathematics Department who is excellent at explaining both general and abstract concepts; he is kind, incredibly well-prepared, very passionate about teaching, friendly and understanding.

Seandra Mitchell, dean of admissions in the Enrollment Management Department, received the Johanna Seelhorst Werwath Distinguished Staff Award. This award is given annually to the employee who is considered to possess those attributes of excellence of character, outstanding ability, a high order of integrity, loyalty and dedication to duty and a sincere willingness to cooperate with others in maintaining the highest standards of staff performance and service. Faculty and staff described Mitchell as someone who goes beyond the call of duty; is very visible, approachable and helpful; works very hard and clearly has a passion for the well-being of MSOE.

SWE chapter honored at conference MSOE’s student chapter of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) was recognized for several achievements at the SWE Region H Conference for collegiate and professional members, held at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. MSOE won “Outstanding Professional Development” and “Highest Retention Rate” awards in the large section division.

Membership for the MSOE chapter increased from 92 registered members last year to 125.

HIGHLIGHTS Global Brigades visits Nicaragua More than 70 MSOE students traveled to Nicaragua as part of a multi-project service trip with Global Brigades-MSOE. This year MSOE introduced the Public Health Brigade – a team focused on empowering rural communities to prevent common illnesses through in-home infrastructure development, community leader training and health education. Also on this trip were the Water and Medical Brigades. The Water Brigade works with local engineers and technicians to construct water systems custom designed for rural communities. The Medical Brigade provides access to health services in rural communities alongside doctors, staff and local leaders. In addition to the labor they provide, students also make program contributions that allow for the purchase of construction materials that are prohibitively expensive for residents of these countries. Members of each brigade spend three days working on their own projects, then take the fourth day to participate in the project of a different brigade – allowing students to broaden their experience.

Concrete canoes and steel bridges The MSOE student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers hosted the annual Great Lakes Region Student Conference for more than 200 students from 19 universities. The main competitive events included the Concrete Canoe Competition, held at the Veteran’s Park Lagoon on the shore of Lake Michigan, and the Steel Bridge Competition, held in MSOE’s Kern Center. Not only did the students execute a well-run conference, they performed amazingly well in all of the competitions.

As a result of their stellar finishes, MSOE’s Concrete Canoe and Steel Bridge teams continued on to the national competitions where the canoe team won the Spirit of the Competition Award.

s ar 0 Ye At the Grohmann This October will mark 10 years since the Grohmann Museum opened its doors to Milwaukee and the world. The museum’s Man at Work collection has nearly doubled in size since then. It now totals more than 1,300 paintings, sculptures and photographs dating from 1580 to the present, and is the world’s most comprehensive art collection dedicated to depictions of human work. The museum is named in honor of Dr. Eckhart Grohmann, an MSOE Regent, Milwaukee businessman and avid art collector who donated his collection to MSOE in 2001 and subsequently the funds to purchase, renovate and operate the museum.

Inauguration Week kicked off with a reception for MSOE faculty and staff, and a reception for MSOE Regents and their spouses.

he university celebrated President Walz’ inauguration with a week of activities April 24-29, 2017.

Members of the MSOE Corporation enjoyed a luncheon with President Walz.

Alumni and friends gathered for an evening reception at the Grohmann Tower.

MSOE TEAM TAKES FIRST IN INTERNATIONAL FORMULA HYBRID CONTEST

n the driver’s seat of MSOE’s SAE formula hybrid vehicle, junior Nicholas Vang skillfully steered his way around a one-kilometer section of track at the New Hampshire International Motor Speedway. Vang was one of three students to drive the 44-lap endurance portion of the SAE International Formula Hybrid Competition in May. In an almost supine position, all Vang could see were the tops of the car’s tires, the nose cone and the track. Exhaust screaming as the engine spun to over 10,000 RPMs, wind rushing around his helmet, it wasn’t until the final leg of the last lap that Vang noticed how hard his heart was beating.

“That’s when I thought, ‘We can do this; we can break the record,’” he said.

MSOE’s formula hybrid team – Mozee Motorsports – was one of 19 teams that answered the challenge to design and build a formula-style electric or plug-in hybrid racecar for the Formula Hybrid Competition. Founded and run by the Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth since 2006, Formula Hybrid is part of the SAE Collegiate Design Series and is regarded as the most complex and dynamic of the series.

At the four-day event, students from across the U.S., Canada and India competed in aspects of design, acceleration, handling and endurance. “We made it through the technical and mechanical inspections and that’s key to the competition,” said senior David Roulo, project manager for the 2017 team. “If you

can get through inspections, you have a good chance at placing among the top four teams.”

completion of the autocross event. The team hit a snag, however, when the car’s left-side axle broke.

Thankfully, a competing team from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute that was not going on to the endurance challenge was able to lend a replacement axle and MSOE continued with the competition.

“We knew that fielding a hybrid vehicle that can take on all 44 laps was a huge challenge,” said Lucas Bednarski, who drove in the autocross event and laps 2233 in the endurance challenge. During the competition’s 11-year history no student-built hybrid had ever completed the entire run.

From the sidelines, the 10 other Mozee Motorsports members who had made the 20-hour road trip to the competition watched and waited for Vang. “Each lap the car would go up a hill and then disappear from view,” said Roulo, “I would hold my breath until I saw it again. You always wondered if the car was going to make it back around.”

But it always did – all 44 times. MSOE was named competition champions and also took home the IEEE Engineering the Future Award, which considers the multidisciplinary makeup of the team and evidence that the vehicle design contained all of the features of a proper racecar, and the Industrial Design Award from Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, which celebrates form and function in an efficiently designed and well-built vehicle.

Drivers are required to wear special safety rated equipment, including a helmet, and SFI-rated fire-resistant racing suit, gloves and shoes.

Hand clutch. Unlike a typical car or motorcycle, all of the shifting and clutching is done by hand with controls on the steering wheel.

More than 20 sponsors supported the team, including, Polaris, Rockwell, Energus, Brembo Brakes and Snap-on Tools.

Long road to victory The MSOE formula hybrid team started in 2010 as a senior project with eight students. Over a few short years it has evolved into a team with more than 60 active members, slowly climbing the ranks of the Formula Hybrid Competition. The first big milestone achievement for MSOE was in 2012; it was the first time the team made it through all of the required technical and safety inspections – a gauntlet of engineers and automotive industry professionals who check every aspect of their work.

The team’s rules and safety officer (RSO) is responsible for making sure that the car is built to specifications. “The rule book is more than 100 pages long,” said Vang, who served as team RSO the past two years.

“Two-thirds of the teams don’t pass their inspections,” said Dr. Mathew Schaefer, associate professor of mechanical engineering and the team’s advisor. “You can’t run in the dynamic events until you pass tech.”

Each year after 2012, the team’s goals became incrementally more ambitious. By 2015, the MSOE team earned fourth place honors at the competition, and second place the following year. “Compared to when I joined the team my freshman year it’s running like a well-oiled machine,” Roulo said.

“What set this team apart was preparation,” Schaefer said. Having a finished car isn’t enough – it has to be tested. Intermediate deadlines with opportunities to run the car kept the team on task and able to find design weaknesses. This year the team had the car roadready for the Milwaukee St. Patrick’s Day parade in March and an invite-only event at the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles Proving Grounds in Chelsea, Michigan in April. FCA has been providing mentors for the team the past two years.

“At the Proving Grounds, teams go through a mock technical inspection with actual competition inspectors to identify what rules the teams are violating,” said FCA Powertrain Analysis Engineer Barry Mason. “The mock inspection allows the teams a few weeks to resolve any violation issues. Many of the competition design judges are FCA employees. Most importantly for the teams, we set up three of the standard dynamic event type courses to test their cars on. It can be challenging for teams to find a safe place to test their vehicles without bothering bystanders and this opportunity provides that.”

“I felt a little like a celebrity,” Bednarski said. But he had mixed emotions. “I was relieved because I knew my job was done and excited to enjoy the impending victory. But I also felt kind of lost. I had achieved this incredible goal with this team, and I didn’t know what to do next.”

Roulo, who graduated in the spring, said he hopes that the team continues to build from the work of previous years. “I am excited for the freshmen coming in,” he said. “We have created a recipe for continued success.”

The car’s performance at the track surprised students. “It was much more potent this year than it was the previous year,” Bednarski said. The MSOE racecar managed to keep pace with the traditional formula cars.

But testing wasn’t the only benefit of visiting the Proving Grounds in Chelsea. “Students being able to work with engineers who develop and test cars for a living and see how they work just increases the level of professionalism for our team,” Schaefer said.

After the dust settles After setting the endurance record at the New Hampshire International Motor Speedway, MSOE students pushed the car back to its paddock with their peers clapping as they walked by.

Regardless of rank, being able to participate in the competition is an experience of immeasurable educational value, Schaefer said. “You are working with a diverse team of students from different disciplines with diverse responsibilities – beyond mechanical engineering,” he said. “Project management, business – getting sponsorships and financial support, along with the technical design details – this is a fantastic experience.”

The competition is also a big recruiting and networking event. MSOE formula hybrid graduates have gone on to work at FCA, Polaris and Ford; the 2012 and 2016 team leaders now work for Harley-Davidson and Pratt and Miller Engineering (in the Corvette Racing/Motorsports Division), respectively. One student, who will be a senior, was offered a job after graduation

by LG Chem, and another has accepted a position at Tesla.

“I think the most exciting part about everything was doing it all with some of my best friends,” Bednarski said. “I got to jump into a truck with some great company every morning, drive to a race track and ultimately win an international competition.”

Senior Projects

2017 Aquaponics optimization A 30,000-square-foot aquaponics operation in Kenosha, Wisconsin is closer to realizing its full potential, thanks to a team of mechanical engineering seniors. Austin Campbell, Justin Johnson, Pawan Panwar, Teresa Schneider, Michael Wiznitzer and Cassandra Wright devoted their capstone project to designing and optimizing operations at 1st Street Aquaponics.

“We wanted to help a local business improve its competitiveness and we were interested in working with renewables and alternative energy supplies,” said Campbell, project manager.

When students made their initial visit to 1st Street Aquaponics it was in the final stages of construction.

Dam design for Marwe River in Tanzania Civil engineering students traveled to Tanzania as part of a senior project focused on a dam construction feasibility study. The project was initiated by Constantine Moshi, an international student with a special connection to Tanzania – it’s the place he calls home.

“The long-term goal of the project is to provide water for non-potable uses,” Moshi said. “In 2015, I visited several villages and talked to the local leaders to understand their needs.” The dam would serve a village east of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Ten MSOE students participated in the project; four of whom traveled to Tanzania in December 2016 to meet with their partners – 10 students from the University of Dar Es Salaam (UDSM) – and collect data.

“Our goal was to improve the profitability of the operation and reduce its environmental impact by decreasing its energy requirements,” said Campbell. “We also had to maintain conditions that are optimal for fish and lettuce production.”

The team synthesized, modeled and evaluated multiple designs. Students made several visits to the facility to update their information and discuss new and ongoing business concerns. When they were finished, they delivered 1st Street Aquaponics co-owner Krista Reck a 300-page document that contained an inventory of the facility and a catalog of ideas.

“We were at a point where we were 90 percent done with 90 percent to go,” said Reck. “The students came in with a great problem-solving attitude. I give them a lot of credit. It was a very positive experience and I will use the information they have provided.”

“My primary responsibility for this trip was surveying the site that we selected,” said Sean Casey. Students also evaluated soil and rock; gathered rain and river gauge information; and researched local construction practices, materials, costs and cultural aspects.

MSOE students communicated regularly with UDSM students and developed six dam alternatives. “It’s not to the point where it can be built tomorrow,” Casey said, “But I think it will give the local community enough information to decide if it’s something they want to pursue.” .msoe Read more about senior projects at msoe.edu/dimensions DIMENSIONS x SUMMER 2017

Lower-limb prosthetic There currently is no lower-limb prosthetic on the market that allows for motion similar to rolling an ankle. This lack of response may result in stumbling and falling. Furthermore, without corrective action to properly place a patient’s center of gravity over the prosthesis, the patient often experiences problems and pain in the knee, hip, back and about the socket that secures the prosthesis to the residual limb. A team of biomedical engineering students designed a powered prosthetic device for lower-limb amputees that can provide control in both the flexion extension (heel strike, toe-off ) and inversion eversion (rolling of the ankle) movements. This novel powered multi-axis lower-limb prosthetic provides proof of concept that lower-limb prosthetics have the potential to offer complete support throughout the gait cycle over any terrain.

Teacher health education In a vast majority of classrooms, teachers do not have to deal with health emergencies on a regular basis. However, when a health emergency does occur, the more prepared a teacher is to deal with it, the better the outcome can be for the student who is under duress. A team of nursing students created a health emergency reference booklet for teachers at Doerfler Elementary School in Milwaukee. The booklet was developed to hang in an easy to find location within the classroom and provides teachers with guidance on how to handle situations involving asthma, allergies, bleeding disorders, cardiovascular disorders, diabetes and epilepsy.

RAIDERS’ WRAP-UP Accomplishments celebrated at StudentAthlete Recognition Luncheon

Carrington named an Academic All-American Junior Jimmy Carrington was the first member of the MSOE baseball team to be named an Academic All-American by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) as he was selected to the third team. He also earned CoSIDA Academic All-District honors the last two seasons. Carrington was named to the ABCA All-Region Third Team and repeated on the All-NACC First Team this season by having another tremendous season at the plate. He batted .327 with seven home runs and 37 RBIs. He scored 37 runs and shared the team lead with 14 doubles.

The only player to play in all 42 games, he posted a .403 on-base percentage and a slugging percentage of .532. In the classroom, Carrington boasts a 3.97 grade point average as a biomedical engineering major.

Carrington was one of two all-region honorees for the Raiders. Junior Owen Burnikel was named to the D3baseball.com All-Midwest Region First Team and the ABCA Second Team. He enjoyed a breakout campaign in 2017, hitting over .400 for most of it. In 40 games, he had nine home runs and 41 RBIs. He also led the team with 38 runs scored and 14 doubles. The Winona, Minnesota, native reached base at a .435 clip and slugged .469 for the season. He reached base safely in 32-straight games from March 2 to May 11, the longest streak by an MSOE player since 2008.

Sara Travia of women’s soccer and Austin Wright of men’s cross country and track & field were named Senior Athletes of the Year while Holly Denfeld of women’s basketball and golf ’s Eric Fulsaas were honored as Senior Scholar Athletes of the Year.

Women’s volleyball and hockey were recognized by the faculty athletic representative (FAR) and received the FAR Award for Team Academics for having the highest cumulative grade point average over the last three quarters.

Dr. Mathew Schaefer, mechanical engineering professor, was honored by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee with the SAAC Faculty Appreciation award for his support of athletics as a part of student life.

Sue Bynum, a longtime staff member in the Athletics Department, was recognized with the Coaches’ Award of Appreciation for her long-standing and often unheralded efforts in support of the coaches on campus.

Kotarak qualifies for NCAA championships, named all-region Sophomore Jerica Kotarak of the MSOE women’s track & field team qualified for the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Championships in the long jump, taking 10th place and just missing out on the finals of the event by 1.5 inches.

She was also named All-Region by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) for both the long jump and triple jump.

Kotarak has now qualified for the NCAA Championships in the long jump in each of her first four indoor/outdoor seasons.

She is currently tied for seventh in the nation in the triple jump with a school and league-record distance of 19-3 1/4.

Winsor named All-MLC Second Team, lacrosse makes first league tourney Junior Oliver Winsor of the MSOE lacrosse team was named to the AllMidwest Lacrosse Conference Second Team. He is the program’s second player to earn a place on an all-league team in program history after Maxwell Wasscher in 2015. Four players were named All-MLC Honorable Mention: juniors Clay Gustafson and Pat Collins, and freshmen Jacob Killian and Brett Laffey. Junior Jake Carney was named to the All-Sportsmanship Team. Buoyed by its first league tournament bid, MSOE capped a historic season for the program. The team went 8-8, tying a school record with eight wins and posting the first .500 season in team history. The Raiders went 5-3 in league play to finish fourth and clinch the final MLC Oliver Winsor Tournament position.

Men honored for sportsmanship, women nab highest all-sports finish MSOE Athletics was presented with the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Men’s Sportsmanship Award for the second-straight season as selected by head coaches and chosen based on the principles of sportsmanship as promoted by the NACC and NCAA. In the NACC All-Sports Standings, both men’s and women’s programs were fourth. For the Raider women, it marked their bestever finish thanks largely to historic seasons by the soccer and softball teams. The women’s soccer team earned the maximum points by claiming its first regular season title and its second-straight tournament crown. The Raiders went 10-0 in league play. The softball team won a school-record 29 games and tied for second in the standings.

Snow selected as NFCA All-American Sophomore Emily Snow became the first All-American in MSOE softball team history to be named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) AllAmerica Second Team. She also was the 2017 NACC Player of the Year and was the program’s third-ever all-region selection. She is the 30th All-American in MSOE athletics history.

Snow played in 39 games this season, reaching base safely in each of her last 37 appearances to set a NACC record. She led the league in hitting at .477 and leads the nation with 23 doubles this season—another league record. She posted two 18-game hitting streaks, including an active run to end the year, and broke school records for hits (62) and RBIs in a season. Snow also threw out 11 would-be base-stealers as she repeated as an All-NACC First-Team catcher.

MSOE had a historic season in 2017, winning a school-record 29 games.

After being picked 10th in the NACC preseason poll, the team defied all expectations to go 17-5 in league play and finish tied for second. The team also qualified for its second league tournament since joining the NACC in 2008.

Alumnus makes hole-in-one at President’s Golf Outing Congratulations to Victor Aiello ’14 on making a hole-in-one at the MSOE President’s Golf Outing! Not only did he get a hole-in-one—he won a 2017 Ford Escape! The winning shot was on the 165-yard Par 3 Hole 6 at the Oconomowoc Golf Club, which was sponsored by Uptown Motors.

As a low-handicap golfer, the odds of Aiello making a hole-in-one were 5,000 to 1. This was his first, and he never expected to sink it. He said, “A hole-in-one was thrilling enough, not to mention winning a car!” Aiello was part of a foursome representing Modine Manufacturing, where he works as an application engineer.

Aiello majored in mechanical engineering at MSOE and was a member of the golf team. He represented the university in two conference championships and played in the NCAA Championship in 2013. “Victor was a great team captain and one of the hardest workers I’ve ever had on my team.

Congratulations, Victor!” said Joe Meloy, men’s golf coach.

The 35th annual President’s Golf Outing was held June 12 and netted $108,000 for MSOE student scholarships. Thanks to everyone who supported the event.

Andrew Hillstrom ’14 is honored in artwork by former president An MSOE alumnus was recently featured in a book of oil paintings by former President George W. Bush. Andrew Hillstrom ’14 is one of the 66 military veterans depicted in “A Portrait of Courage: A Commander in Chief ’s Tribute to America’s Warriors.”

“Over the years I’ve had the privilege and honor to get to know President Bush,” said Hillstrom, a Foreign Service Officer for the Department of State. “But surprisingly enough I had no clue he was going to paint me until he had already completed the painting.”

Although he was born in Waukegan, Illinois, Hillstrom grew up in southeastern Wisconsin. From a young age he was drawing and building, and once he was in high school he took every drafting and engineering related course available. When it was time, Hillstrom applied for the AE/CM program at MSOE with the intention to enroll after high school, but changed his mind. “I wasn’t ready to start my college career. I had this drive to see the world and serve my country,” he said.

In 2007 Hillstrom was injured during combat operations in Iraq. “The bomb that caused my injuries tore off a large portion of my right triceps, ulna and elbow, resulting in 17 surgeries.”

After medically retiring from the military in 2009, Hillstrom reapplied to MSOE. He went on to simultaneously earn bachelor’s degrees in architectural engineering and construction management, and a master’s degree in construction business management.

he said. “For me, having a purpose in life is what motivates me.

After being wounded while serving in Iraq I learned not only the importance of peace through diplomacy, but what it means to have a purpose in life larger than myself.” For Hillstrom, that purpose is service to country.

“The most valuable skillset I acquired at MSOE is problemsolving,” he said. “Life’s problems aren’t always easy and don’t happen in a linear fashion. Learning outside-the-box thinking had me well prepared to start my career.”

“The single largest challenge I faced was learning not to be limited by my new physical disabilities,” he said. “Not being able to do things like throw a ball or lift weights burdened me greatly. Perceived obstacles such as these prevented me from being very physically active for a while.”

It was several years after his injury that Hillstrom went to a driving range with friends and much to his surprise, he was still able to hit a golf ball. “I was able to modify my swing to accommodate my injuries.” With practice, soon Hillstrom’s golf play exceeded his pre-injury performance. In 2015, he was invited to play in the Warrior Open, a golf tournament hosted

by Bush for wounded veterans.

Hillstrom lives in Washington, D.C. with his wife Elizabeth and their sons Harvey, 4; Dexter, 2; and Winston, 2 months.

Cuban Exploration New this year, MSOE students had the opportunity to travel to Havana, Cuba. As a prerequisite to taking the trip, they completed a new Cuban History course taught by Dr. Michael Carriere in the Humanities, Social Science and Communication Department. During the class, students were introduced to the broad history of modern Cuba. They studied the country’s recent political history, imperialism and life under colonial rule, the anti-colonial movement, the struggle for independence, the Revolutionary movement, post-revolution politics and issues of economic development.

Architectural engineering sophomore Devon Mayo took advantage of this opportunity for a number of reasons. “I love travelling. Any chance I can get to experience a new culture, I will jump in head first,” he said. “Also, I’m a bit of a history and architectural geek and Cuba is a country that was locked in the 1950s up until recently. The chance to experience firsthand what life looked like 70 years ago was a big factor in my decision to go.”

The group spent a lot of time with Cuban residents, staying in their homes and enjoying meals with them. In their travels throughout the country, students visited Finca Vigía, which was Ernest Hemingway’s house; Fusterlandia, the home of artist and community activist José Fuster; the José Martí Memorial at Revolution Square; and many other locations. They also met with a specialist on Cuba’s recent economic changes and learned about the country’s challenges and aspirations in the coming years.

“My biggest take-away from Cuba comes directly from the people. Many of them were excited to meet us and spend a few minutes to talk. There was no animosity towards us,” said Mayo. “If anyone has the chance to visit this country in the near future, do it ASAP. Cuba is changing. While the heart of Cuba, places such as Habana Vieja (Old Havana) are being restored and will remain stuck in time, much of the rest of the country is being modernized.”

Students and advisors visited Muraleando, a neighborhood filled with murals depicting celebrations of Cuban life.

In the Fusterlandia neighborhood, homes are adorned by millions of ceramic tiles.

Artist José Fuster began the project at his house. Over the course of 30 years, he has spread his work to more than 50 of his neighbors’ homes.

From Mars to MSOE A note from Dr. Eric Baumgartner It is a tremendous honor to be joining MSOE’s leadership team as the new vice president of academics. I am coming to MSOE after spending 11 years at the helm of the T.J. Smull College of Engineering at Ohio Northern University (ONU). Prior to my tenure at ONU, I spent 10 years as an engineer at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory ( JPL) in Pasadena, California, where I contributed to both technology development and flight projects that are associated with NASA’s Mars Exploration Program. My greatest joy at JPL was serving as one of the first four rover drivers for the Opportunity rover that still operates today after landing on Mars in 2004.

I have always been drawn to institutions that focus on the student and care deeply about their growth and development as a person and a future professional. MSOE has been, and will continue to be, this type of institution. I am excited to have the opportunity to work collaboratively with President John Walz, the MSOE leadership team, as well as faculty from all of the academic disciplines in order to help shape the future of MSOE. This tremendous opportunity is what ultimately drew me away from Ohio and to Milwaukee.

My wife, Annmarie, and I are going to be “empty nesters” this fall as our youngest of three children heads off to college. We are very much looking forward to exploring all that Milwaukee has to offer.
