PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE On a Personal Note: At our recent Board of Regents meeting, I informed the Regents of my intention to retire at the end of this fiscal year, June 2015. At that time I will conclude more than 24 years as president, a period that has been immensely interesting and satisfying due to the wonderful support of Regents, faculty, staff, students and friends.

My wife, the recently ordained Reverend Pamela Viets, and I are looking forward to many more adventures to complement our fulfilling experiences in Milwaukee. But for now, it is business as usual here at MSOE!

The Return on Your Investment We often read articles and editorials on the value of a college education. Of course, lifelong satisfaction is perhaps the most important result of a quality education but the recent commentary has focused on financial return. For Milwaukee School of Engineering, this discussion is most welcome. Payscale.com lists MSOE graduates as having the highest starting salaries, highest mid-career salaries, and highest ROI of any institution in Wisconsin.

But let’s take a more general view. It Dr. Michael Erwin ’94 (left) and Dr. Robert Vieau ’69. is a fact that some college educations do not have a financial payback. That statement is not the shot at liberal arts institutions that we often hear. Many liberal arts institutions produce accomplished and productive graduates who certainly benefit from a substantial financial return. Financial reward is not a technology vs. liberal arts issue.

So, what determines to what extent a college education financially benefits the graduate?

The answer, as in so many things, is not the investment of money but of effort. It will surprise no one that education at all levels requires effort. For a college education, one’s financial return depends on the investment of effort regardless of tuition expense. In turn, the level of effort will be reflected in the graduate’s increased knowledge and ability to think and perform. Why? Because such students work at their education and this work ethic carries over to employment. The student who sat on the sidelines and smelled the roses will not be prepared for the competition.

This definitely explains the success of MSOE graduates. The rigorous requirements of our programs, including laboratories, reports, projects and presentations, require a level of effort unmatched by any but a handful of universities. We certainly make no apology for that.

Our graduates and current students should be proud of the effort they put into their studies. It distinguishes them from the vast majority of college graduates and will serve them well. We all benefit from their investment!

SPOTLIGHT ON LEADERSHIP

Taking the road less traveled If one term sums up the diverse career of MSOE Regent Jim Rahn, it’s entrepreneurship. But his startups haven’t been typical. Rahn’s pioneering has been in the realm of K-12 and higher education, worlds not always known for risk-taking and innovation.

After high school, Rahn planned to pursue accounting and law at UW-Madison. But after some soul searching, he chose a different path. “My mother died of cancer when I was 16. And it dawned on me how great of an impact my teachers had on me during that difficult time. So I felt compelled to serve in that way.”

Following graduation from Dr. Martin Luther College in New Ulm, Minn., Rahn taught and served as a principal in several Lutheran schools. He earned a master’s degree in educational leadership from Concordia University, and moved to Milwaukee in 1997 to serve as regional coordinator for the Wisconsin Lutheran High School conference.

Recognizing a need to develop the human capital pipeline for the expanding school choice environment in Wisconsin, Rahn

“Don’t let your degree program dictate your career path; bring an entrepreneurial mindset to your life.” took a professor position at Wisconsin Lutheran College. His K-12 pioneering began when he founded the WLC Center for Urban Teaching in 2001.

The 1998 Wisconsin Supreme Court decision upholding school vouchers served as a catalyst for Rahn to advance the idea of an independently run Christian school in the heart of Milwaukee. The first of several HOPE Christian Schools was launched in 2002.

A few years later, Rahn used his business acumen in the nonprofit sector to co-found Educational Enterprises Inc. (EEI), which strives to provide students with world-class learning opportunities. EEI operates HOPE Christian Schools, EAGLE College Prep Schools and Compass Educational Programs.

It didn’t take long for Rahn’s entrepreneurial approach to attract the attention of The Kern Family Foundation, established by Robert and Patricia Kern after the sale of Generac Power Systems, a company they founded in their garage in 1959. The Kerns’ drive to expose U.S. students to quality STEM education, their passion for entrepreneurial

learning, and their focus on character formation and academic achievement were a perfect match for Rahn’s experience and principles.

“In September 2007 I joined the team as the education reform program director. After meeting the Kerns and hearing their compelling story and powerful vision, it was (and is) a real honor and privilege to work for them.” In February 2008, Rahn became the foundation’s president.

Education continues to be a priority for Rahn. He serves on the boards of MSOE, the Charter School Growth Fund, Project Lead The Way, Great Hearts America and similar enterprises. At the foundation, he works with the Kern Entrepreneurship Education Network (KEEN), which promotes entrepreneurially minded learning in undergraduate engineering programs.

A major focus of Rahn’s work is building strategic partnerships that can continue the foundation’s mission.

“MSOE is at the center of a lot of Kern work, and serves as a strong partner with its involvement in Project Lead The Way, KEEN, STEM education and its collaborations with the Medical College of Wisconsin.”

Rahn’s advice to students: “Don’t let your degree program dictate your career path; bring an entrepreneurial mindset to your life. MSOE students are problem solvers. MSOE graduates have sound character, good work habits, practical knowledge and problem-solving skills. They are a delight for employers.”

HIGHLIGHTS MSOE “Imagineers” take second place worldwide A team of MSOE freshmen, dubbed the “Imagineers,” took second place in the Technical Challenge at the Destination Imagination Global Tournament in Knoxville, Tenn. They designed and built a piece of equipment that could detect and remove hidden objects. To complete the challenge they stretched a guitar string over a wooden rig and pulled containers through a housing suspended on the guitar string. They plucked the guitar string with a solenoid pick, and the change in weight on the housing changed the pitch. The frequency was analyzed by a computer to determine if there was an object in the container.

Milwaukee Art Museum unveils student-built LEGO replica Milwaukee’s most notable landmark, the Milwaukee Art Museum’s Quadracci Pavilion, has been replicated with 15,000 LEGO pieces by members of MSOE’s Architectural Engineering Institute student organization. The creation includes the museum’s signature wings, the Burke Brise Soleil, which open and close. The replica was unveiled at the museum during its Lakefront Festival of Art. The Quadracci Pavilion was created by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, who received an honorary Doctor of Engineering degree from MSOE in 1997. The students spent a combined 525 hours designing and building the project which is now on display at MSOE’s Walter Schroeder Library.

Society of Military Engineers honors MSOE student Dylan Shiltz (pictured, right) received the SAME ROTC Award of Merit, presented by the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME). Shiltz, who graduated this spring with high honors and a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, is part of the Air Force Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC). He also is an MSOE University Scholar and maintained a cumulative GPA of 4.00. The award is given annually to outstanding junior and senior engineering students actively enrolled in an ABET-accredited school and ROTC, and in the top 25 percent of their engineering and ROTC classes. He was one of only two students who received this award in the Northwest Detachment. He will attend MIT to earn a master’s degree in mechanical engineering.

Shiltz was the class respondent at Commencement and said, “[MSOE] students are not only driven to succeed, they are genuinely willing to help others succeed as well.”

First global brigade treats 231 patients In March, 29 MSOE students and two faculty members traveled to Panama to do medical service work in the rural village of Quebrada Honda. The students are members of Global Brigades-MSOE, a university chapter of the world’s largest student-led global health and sustainable development organization. Students assisted a team of Panamanian physicians, dentists, pharmacists and other health care professionals, and saw 231 patients in three days. Students recorded height, weight and blood pressure for patients, applied fluoride treatments to ensure better dental health, and taught children the basics of dental hygiene. Dr. Patrick J. Jung, General Studies, and Dr. Victoria Carlson-Oehlers, School of Nursing, accompanied them. To prepare students for the trip, Jung and Carlson-Oehlers co-taught a course titled Culture and Health in Central America.

Students take in-depth look at Northwestern Mutual Tower and Commons Northwestern Mutual has teamed up with the design architect and development manager for the Northwestern Mutual Tower and Commons construction project to conduct a six-part Master Class series. The classes engage local architecture, interior design, engineering and real estate students in various elements of the company’s downtown Milwaukee expansion. MSOE students are learning firsthand from architects, engineers and other professionals on the project.

GE Girls at MSOE program nurtures curiosity in science More than two dozen girls from Waukesha, Wis., middle schools spent a week exploring the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). The GE Girls at MSOE program, now in its third year, was sponsored by the GE Healthcare Women’s Network and MSOE. Topics ranged from medical technologies, chemistry and additive engineering to engine design, quality control and Lean manufacturing – with special curriculum presented by teachers from Waukesha Public Schools and MSOE, as well as experts from local GE Healthcare and GE Power and Water facilities. o to msoe.edu/newsroom and click MSOE in the News to see media G coverage of this event.

In addition, the 2013-14 PayScale College Salary Report shows that MSOE alumni enjoy the highest average starting and mid-career salaries of any college or university in Wisconsin.

MSOE helps Team USA win Water Innovation Challenge Team USA won the inaugural Water Innovation Challenge held during International Water Week in Singapore. Involved with the team, which was organized by the American Society of Plumbing Engineers (ASPE), were Douglas Nelson, P.E., assistant professor, and architectural engineering alumna Judith Torres ’12, G.E. During the competition, teams developed innovative solutions for emerging water and sanitation problems in Nepal and Bangladesh.

Dr. Blake Wentz is promoted Dr. Blake Wentz has been named chair of the Civil and Architectural Engineering and Construction Management (CAECM) Department, effective Fall 2014. Wentz joined MSOE in 2005 and since 2008, served as the construction management program director. He is the faculty advisor for the Mechanical Contractors Association of America (MCAA) student chapter. Wentz was named the 2008 Educator of the Year by Wisconsin Builder Magazine, Associated Dr. Blake Wentz Schools of Construction (ASC) National Educator of the Year in 2010, and MCAA Educator of the Year in 2011 and 2012. In 2013 he was the AGC Associate of the Year. Currently, Wentz is serving as the owner’s representative for the MSOE Tower Apartments construction project. He holds a B.S. in finance and an M.S. in engineering from the University of Nebraska, and a Ph.D. in construction management from Indiana State. Wentz succeeds Dr. Deborah Jackman, who will assume the role of assistant vice president of institutional research and assessment.

Consortium grant helps MSOE researchers The Mid-West Energy Research Consortium, of which MSOE is a part, has awarded six grants of $75,000 to local universities to continue work in energy, power and control systems. Dr. Bass Abushakra and Dr. Jeong Woo, both associate professors in the Civil and Architectural Engineering and Construction Management Department, and Dr. Chris Damm, professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department, received a grant to develop a model of a Net Zero Energy campus in a Distributed Energy Resource and Systems environment. This proof-of-concept project examines taking the whole MSOE campus off the existing electricity transmission lines and natural gas city mains. Researchers from UW-Milwaukee also will be involved.

Nursing program receives re-accreditation MSOE’s School of Nursing received notification that its Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree has been granted continued accreditation for 10 years, extending to June 2024, with no compliance concerns with respect to the key elements. The B.S. in Nursing is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (http://www.aacn.nche.edu/ccne-accreditation).

Discovery Radio hits the WMSE airwaves Learn how scientists across southeast Wisconsin are revolutionizing health and the community. Host David Todd, from the Clinical & Translational Science Institute of Southeast Wisconsin (an organization of researchers and scientists including MSOE faculty), introduces you to new and novel discoveries and the people behind them.

Discovery Radio airs at noon the third Friday of every month on 91.7FM and streams live at wmse.org.

Distinguished faculty and staff This year’s recipient of the Oscar Werwath Distinguished Teacher Award was Dr. William Farrow, associate professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department. Gina Moran, math/physics specialist in the Learning Resource Center, received the Johanna Seelhorst Werwath Distinguished Staff Award.

These annual awards recognize those who exemplify the values and beliefs of MSOE’s founding family. Students selected Dr. David Howell for the Student Advocate Award and Cheryl Myers as the Greek Advocate of the Year.

Steininger wins second Milwaukee Press Club Award Professor Emerita Judith Steininger, General Studies Department, won first place in the Writing Category for Short Feature Articles from the Milwaukee Press Club.

Her award-winning article was entitled “In the Danger Zone,” and was published in M Magazine. The statewide contest is juried by out-of-state judges. Steininger also won a first place award from the Press Club for a Long Feature Article in 2006.

Kern Center hosts Wisconsin Sports Awards It was a veritable who’s who of sports. The Kern Center hosted the Wisconsin Sports Awards in April, welcoming Aaron Rodgers, Eddie Lacy, John Kuhn and Mike McCarthy of the Green Bay Packers, UW-Madison basketball coach Bo Ryan, and several Badger basketball and football players. The Wisconsin Sports Awards recognizes the best in Wisconsin sports throughout high school, college and professional arenas.

IE student competes at international conference Senior industrial engineering major Patrick Gathof took first place in the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE) Undergraduate Student Technical Paper Competition. He first competed at the North Central Region Conference, where he took first place and earned the chance to compete at the global level. Fellow IE majors Dana Eriksen and Kira Hanson took third place at the regional competition. Gathof then traveled to the IIE Annual Conference and Expo in Montreal where he took first place. He competed against students from Georgia Tech, Ohio State, Rutgers University and schools in Canada and Mexico. His paper was entitled Supermarket Redesign: Demand-Driven Inventory Planning, and was created as part of his senior design project.

Attention MSOE retirees An informal gathering of faculty and staff who have retired from MSOE will be taking place three to four times per year.

HIGHLIGHTS MSOE bowlers are Academic All-Americans Five members of the MSOE Bowling Team were named Academic All-Americans by the National Collegiate Bowling Coaches Association for the 2013-14 season for earning a minimum 3.50 cumulative GPA. The team is coached by Stephanie Parrish ’03, ’14.

Grohmann Museum receives gifts What began as two temporary exhibitions at the Grohmann Museum, have turned into permanent gifts to the collection. Photographer David Plowden donated 54 bridge photographs to the museum following an exhibition of his work: Bridges: The Spans of North America. Additionally, Thomas H. Garver donated nine of O. Winston Link’s prints, five of which are signed by the photographer. This gift came on the heels of the Trains that Passed in the Night exhibition organized by Garver and the Center for Railroad Photography and Art.

MSOE hosts IEEE conference More than 100 members of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) came to MSOE for the 2014 IEEE International Conference on Electro/Information Technology. Dr. Russ Meier was general chair of the conference. Faculty from MSOE’s Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department served as program chairs, including Dr. Olga Imas, Dr. Darrin Rothe and Dr. Jay Wierer. They also delivered presentations, as did Jim Blaha and Dr. John Gassert.

Home sweet home Finishing touches are underway at the new MSOE Tower Apartments. During this first phase of construction, 102 units were completed on floors 4 through 9 and all of them have been rented. Students will begin moving in Sept. 1. Construction work will continue throughout the school year to complete the remaining apartments on floors 10 through 14 which are anticipated to be an additional 55 units.

FACULTY FEATURE

Dr. Carolyn “Kelly” Lawrence Ottman From a young age, Dr. Carolyn “Kelly” Lawrence Ottman had a spark for teaching.

At 13, she volunteered in nursing homes teaching a class called Krafts with Kelly. “I would adapt the crafts to accommodate the residents.”

After building a successful career in the health care industry, Ottman left her vice president role in the corporate world to teach full time, holding faculty positions at both Marquette and UW-Milwaukee. She came to MSOE in 2007, where she was able to teach smaller classes and consult with businesses worldwide. “I enjoy consulting because it is a great way to link academics and industry while staying current and aware of emerging trends.”

Ottman’s passion for international business inspired her to develop the Doing Business With China graduate program in 2009. Through the annual program, students undergo 11 weeks of classroom preparation where they meet with more than 20 business leaders to learn about issues related to business in China as well as gaining cultural understanding.

The course culminates in a 12-day tour of China, where they meet with both Chinese and American business people at a variety of companies, and even participate in a rural servant-leadership project. “I push the students to take risks, to go outside of their comfort zone,” said Ottman. “We take public transportation, and students take turns navigating. Even the food is outside of their comfort zone. Those experiences, while challenging, transfer to students feeling empowered and more willing to try new leadership roles in other parts of their life.”

Ottman leveraged existing relationships with American companies like GE Healthcare, Douglas Dynamics, Brady Corp., Kimberly-Clark and Miller Electric, which have operations in China. She was careful to nurture working relationships, what the Chinese refer to as guanxi, which is a crucial business component there. “We worked with MSOE’s Board of Regents and others to make sure we met the needs of employers and students. Because we’ve been doing this for several years, we’ve become a trusted friend. The program would not be what it is without those partnerships, which ultimately benefit the students.”

“Because of the relationships Dr. Ottman has established in China, we were able to have very open and direct dialog with the companies we visited,” said Ross Buckley ’11, global account manager with ITW Welding.

“I go to China for my job, and the experience prepared me for how to act when forming relationships with new customers.”

When she’s not teaching or traveling, Ottman enjoys spending time with her daughter Brienz, 13, and son Zac, 21, who is a junior at MSOE. She also enjoys camping, kayaking, gardening and servantleadership activities.

The Friday before Spring Commencement is an exciting day on campus. It’s when students present their senior design projects, which they’ve been working on for the past year (or longer). Students are rightfully proud of their achievements and excited to share the many lessons they learned along the way with faculty, parents, alumni and other visitors.

MBA in STEM Leadership Among the first of its kind in the world, the MBA in STEM Leadership prepares STEM teacher-leaders to develop and support initiatives to improve student learning outcomes in STEM fields. The degree blends STEM education techniques, business knowledge, and leadership skills to provide PK-12 teachers and college instructors with the capabilities needed to drive higher levels of student achievement in STEM fields. The program is offered part-time and can easily integrate with a full-time work schedule, and participation in PLTW and Center for BioMolecular Modeling science outreach programs can be converted into graduate program credit.

MSN As the health care environment becomes increasingly complex, the demand for welleducated, business-oriented nursing professionals who can operate in managerial and leadership roles is growing. MSOE’s Master of Science in Nursing (MSN): Health Care Systems Management blends nursing, business and engineering concepts to equip graduates with the knowledge and skills necessary to function effectively in the health care environment. MSOE and Medical College Students Team Up Teamwork and communication are among the most important skills for medical professionals to learn. While medical schools and nursing schools do an excellent job educating their students, it is not standard practice for student nurses and student doctors to learn together.

“It is critical we take a collaborative approach to the education of our future health care professionals. After graduation, nurses and physicians work together but they haven’t necessarily been educated together,” said Dr. Jane B. Paige, associate professor at MSOE. “The MSOE School of Nursing and Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) piloted an interprofessional educational program that brought students entering medical and nursing disciplines together to develop the communication skills and attitudes necessary to function as effective members of a health care team.”

Two weeks later, the students and patients gathered for a second time at the simulation hospital within MSOE’s Ruehlow Nursing Complex. During the simulation, the grandchild brought his grandparent to the hospital with delirium. Student nurses cared for the patient and grandchild and called the student doctors, who then came to the hospital to treat the patient.

The student nurses and student doctors reported they learned how important it is to organize their thoughts for better communication; it is helpful to have everyone in the room at the same time while they’re assessing the patient; and they value teamwork.

RAIDERS’ WRAP-UP MSOE earns prestigious NACC honors The Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference named 113 of MSOE’s student athletes as NACC Scholar-Athletes. Student athletes competing in the conference must maintain a grade point average of 3.25 or higher for the academic year to be eligible for the honor. MSOE also boasted 13 scholar-athletes in other conferences, with hockey garnering six NCHA selections, lacrosse’s two MLC honorees and five CVC selections for men’s volleyball.

Successful seasons by the Raider men’s teams resulted in the 2013-14 NACC Men’s All-Sports Award for MSOE. The conference gives points based on regular and post-season finishes, and averages them among the number of sponsored sports. The Raiders had a 9.69 index over eight NACC-sponsored sports to claim the award over Aurora and Concordia Wisconsin with an 8.94 index each.

To win its first All-Sports Award, MSOE posted top-three finishes in six of its eight sports including tennis, basketball, cross country, both indoor and outdoor track and field, and golf.

Raiders are runners-up in IRA Lightweight 4 Petite Final The MSOE rowing team posted a second place finish in the Petite Final of the Lightweight 4 and fourth in the 3rd-Level Final of the Varsity 4 at the IRA Regatta. The Lightweight 4 group of senior coxswain Liz Kelnhofer and seniors Jonathan Allen, Michael Dorus and Tim Urbas and sophomore Caleb Vredenbregt took fourth in its opening heat and seventh overall with a time of 6:42.959. In the Petite Final, the Raiders led for the first 1,250 meters, but took second to Navy in 6:50.999 by 3.311 seconds.

MSOE’s Heavyweight 4 boat of sophomore coxswain Cameron St. Clair and senior Michael Richter, junior Tom Woodard and sophomores Finn Finucane and Garrett Hoeg made the program’s debut in the Varsity 4, finishing fourth in 6:50.249.

Men’s tennis takes NACC title The MSOE men’s tennis team won the NACC regular season title with an 8-1 record and defeated perennial conference leader Concordia Wisconsin. Eric Klamrowski capped his career with all-conference honors. Freshmen David Gorodetsky and John Price found great success as regulars in the singles lineup. Price was the only NACC player to post perfect conference records in both singles (7-0) and doubles (7-0) play. He finished his first year 12-6 as a singles player, which was fifth in the NACC in winning percentage.

Baseball wraps first season under Sanfilippo

The MSOE baseball team had a successful season under new head coach Steve Sanfilippo. The program matched the 13 wins from 2013, but added two NACC wins in two less games. MSOE defeated Benedictine and Aurora in three straight games for the first wins in team history over the other schools. The key to the Raiders’ success was a pitching staff that posted a 4.24 ERA, dropping 1.56 runs from 2013 and posting the best staff ERA in more than 20 years.

Rhodes is first men’s track and field All-American Jerome Rhodes capped an impressive year by becoming the first MSOE men’s track and field All-American and posted the best finish by a Raider male at the national meet. He tied for seventh in the high jump at the NCAA Outdoor Championships and qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships, taking 10th. Rhodes cleared a final height of 6-9 to finish among the top eight and secure All-American honors. Rhodes won the high jump 10 times and broke the school high jump record eight times.

MSOE’s softball team tied a school record with 24 wins, improved its conference standing by nine wins and qualified for its first conference tournament since joining the NACC. Three freshmen pitchers keyed the turnaround. Shannon Curtis, Sara McConnell and Callie Wightman combined on 15 shutouts, more than twice as many as any other team in the NACC, and posted a team ERA of 2.31 with 208 strikeouts and just 77 walks.

McConnell earned the program’s first All-NACC First Team award, while Wightman hurled a league-best six shutouts and a no-hitter at Maranatha. Lauren Boyle was an allconference second-team performer behind the plate, leading the nation with 17 base runners caught stealing. Katie Ready also earned All-NACC honors with her second straight honorable mention nod.

Holly Denfeld had a standout freshman campaign on the basketball court, helping the Raiders to 13 wins as the NACC Freshman of the Year and an all-conference first-team selection. This spring she returned to outdoor track and field, in which she was a prep standout.

In just her second collegiate meet, she set a school record in the triple jump.

At the NACC Championships, she scored 27 of MSOE’s 35.5 points over four events, winning an individual title in the triple jump, and earned NACC Freshman of the Meet honors.

Lacrosse shows signs of turnaround Head coach Sean Farrell took over a young lacrosse program in 2014 and led them to their best season. The Raiders achieved program highs for both offense and defense, increasing their goal output to a record 77, the seventh-best improvement among 202 Division III programs that fielded teams last season. On the other end of the field, MSOE allowed 191 goals, a decrease of 31.3 percent from last season and a school-record 13.67 GAA. The Raiders shut out Defiance 15-0 and Dubuque 16-0 marking the first two shutouts in program history and set school records for goals in a game.

MSOE offers a variety of summer activities that aim to help students improve their abilities and better plan for their future. They cater to a wide range of ages and interests, and all are open to the public.

Summer Programs MSOE’s week-long Summer Programs are designed to help high school sophomores, juniors or seniors determine their interests and potential career paths. MSOE has two types of summer programs: Discover the Possibilities and Focus on the Possibilities. Not only do Summer Programs students get a strong feel for what they might be interested in, they get to experience college life (including living in the dorms) for a week. Learn more at msoe.edu/summer.

Discover the Possibilities This program is for students interested in a general area of engineering, such as health-related science or electrical and computer systems, rather than a specific degree. Each day is spent exploring a different field, with lab time and tours of local industries.

Focus on the Possibilities This program dives deep into a specific major such as biomedical engineering, computer engineering, business, nursing, mechanical engineering, etc. Students spend the week working in teams focusing on problems in that specific major and learning what it could be like to work in that field.

While students are here, they could possibly run into a teacher from their high school. Several hundred teachers visit campus each summer for one or more weeks participating in training sessions for Project Lead The Way courses.

Athletic camps For the budding NHL hockey player or World Cup soccer champ in your life, MSOE offers a variety of sports camps and clinics. Most are held in the summer, with others throughout the year. The camps are held on campus in MSOE’s world-class facilities and coached by its award-winning head coaches. Currently, camps in baseball, basketball, hockey, lacrosse, soccer, softball and wrestling are offered. Living by the golden

rule

Before he even graduated with his mechanical engineering degree, Fred Bartkowski ’62 knew that, someday, he would want to set up a scholarship to help deserving MSOE students. It was a full-tuition scholarship from Harnischfeger Co. (now Joy Global Inc.) that enabled him to come to MSOE in the first place. “I was originally lined up to go to UW-Milwaukee, but when the Harnischfeger opportunity came along I knew I wanted to switch to MSOE,” he said. “I was just 17 and had limited funds to go to college. Plus, I liked that MSOE was a smaller school dedicated to engineering.”

After graduating from MSOE in 1962, Bartkowski worked as an industrial sales engineer for Wisconsin Gas Co., where he Bartkowski and his wife Rosemarie (center), along with members of their family, celebrated his induction to the Alumni Wall of Fame during the 2013 Summer in the City alumni reunion. spent the next 10 years. When Bartkowski was offered a job at Marshall W. Nelson & Associates selling equipment to burn natural gas, he jumped at the chance. He worked his way up into helping with dayto-day operations at the company, utilizing his business and engineering experience. “I didn’t plan on staying there for my whole career. But I enjoyed my work and I took an active part in doing things for the company.” Bartkowski retired as president of M.W. Nelson in 2005.

Despite his successful career and busy life, Bartkowski never forgot about the opportunity given to him through his scholarship, and he has been an active supporter of MSOE. He served on the Alumni Association and on the President’s Golf Outing committee, serves as a Corporation member and was named to the Alumni Wall of Fame in 2013. He and his wife Rosemarie actively contributed to the Annual Fund and also set up a scholarship to support mechanical engineering

In addition to the scholarship, Bartkowski earmarked funds in his will to further support the scholarship after he and his wife pass. “We’ve been supporting MSOE for so many years, and this is a way to continue that support after we’re gone.

Also, it’s a way for us to further grow the scholarship without having to make significant lifestyle changes.”

For Bartkowski and his wife, meeting the students who have benefitted from their scholarship makes them happy.

“It makes us feel really proud when we attend functions and people tell us we helped them, or when we get a note from a scholarship recipient. I’ve always tried to live my life by the golden rule, and I vowed that I would try to do for others what Harnischfeger did for me.”

Engineering a successful career Jillaine Dellis ’89 started her college career as a biomedical engineering major at a different university, with the intent of going to medical school. But she enjoyed her engineering, math and physics courses so much that she decided to change to a university with a stronger engineering program, transferring to MSOE as a biomedical engineering major her sophomore year. “I chose MSOE because of its academic rigor and employment and graduate school placement record. The smaller class size and direct contact with professors created a strong sense of academic community and camaraderie that is unusual to find at the undergraduate level.”

After graduating from MSOE, Dellis pursued a master’s degree in biomedical engineering from Marquette University. Six weeks into her master’s degree courses, she accepted a job with S.C. Johnson and worked full time while completing her degree. It didn’t take long for her to climb the corporate ladder, and she has held positions such as vice president of Ariel global research and operations with 3E Company/Ariel Research, director of global product safety and regulatory affairs with Alberto Culver and her current, director of product quality, safety and compliance with Meijer. She also serves as a member of MSOE’s Corporation.

Although her career has involved business more than technical engineering, she continues to rely on skills she learned at MSOE. “I accepted a non-engineering assignment right out of college and soon after, I was awarded my first supervisory assignment. For me, it all came together and I continued to use the core critical thinking and problem-solving skills I learned at MSOE even if I wasn’t using as much of the specific technical knowledge. I would not be where I am today professionally without my engineering education.”

For any students unsure of what to major in, Dellis recommends engineering. “I strongly encourage students who do not know what to study to earn an engineering degree. Engineering provides opportunities and opens doors that may not otherwise present themselves. It is not uncommon for successful senior business leaders to have an engineering or technical background.” She also recommends that students be open to opportunities, embrace and learn from their mistakes, and not take themselves too seriously.

In her free time, Dellis enjoys traveling. “Exploring foreign countries and cultures is an important part of my life. I met my husband doing volunteer work in a small mountainous village in Guatemala; we discovered that we lived two miles from each other in Arlington, Va. I also love to spend as much time as I can enjoying the upper-Midwestern summers, especially in my kayak.”

Knuth was honored with an Individual Volunteer Award by United Way of East Central Iowa for leadership in the Rockwell Collins Retiree Volunteers organization.

In addition to being vice-chairman of the volunteers organization, Knuth volunteers as a tutor in civics and citizenship to foreign students seeking U.S. citizenship, has taught numerous classes to senior citizens in the use of the iPad, and has assisted in constructing wheel-chair ramps for disadvantaged families. He is active in his church and is currently the chairman of the Board of Elders and edits and distributes video broadcasts of the weekly church services.

This year’s Summer in the City reunion weekend honored the classes of 1964 (50 year), 1989 (25 year) and 2004 (10 year). It was filled with fun events including a tour of Allen-Bradley/Rockwell Automation, courses taught by MSOE professors, a Milwaukee River cruise and much more.

The Silver and Gold Dinner honors the classes of 1964 and 1989 (MSOE and Milwaukee County General Hospital School of Nursing) with dinner and cocktails in the Grohmann Museum gallery.

Laura and Erik ’04 von Asten enjoyed a cruise on the Milwaukee River during Summer in the City.

During a tour of Allen-Bradley/Rockwell Automation, guests were treated to the view of Milwaukee from the building’s famous clock tower.

Some of the graduates from the MCGHSN class of 1964 gathered after the MSOE and MCGHSN Scholarship Luncheon, where they reminisced with friends while supporting the MSOE School of Nursing.

NEW DEGREE: MBA in Education

Leadership MSOE and the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation have partnered to launch an innovative new MBA in Education Leadership program to prepare the next generation of school leaders. Starting Fall 2014, the degree blends college coursework delivered in an executive seminar format with a tailored business curriculum and intensive clinical experience in schools, corporations or nonprofits, and involvement in innovative schools abroad.

The program, one of the first in the nation, will be offered through MSOE’s Rader School of Business and is designed to prepare leaders who will drive innovation in schools, expand the use of analytics and evidence-based practices, raise student performance to international standards, and improve the quality of school systems and teaching over time.

The Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation will select highly qualified emerging leaders to receive a fellowship of $50,000 to cover tuition and program costs, including a culminating international educational experience and three years of post-degree executive coaching.

All program candidates for the MBA in Education Leadership and the Woodrow Wilson MBA Fellowship program must be nominated by Wisconsin school administrators, including public, private, choice or charter schools.
