Welcoming Our New Leader A new leader will be taking the helm at MSOE effective July 1. The presidentelect, Dr. John Y. Walz, comes to MSOE from the University of Kentucky, where he has spent the past four years as dean of the College of Engineering. When Walz steps into his new role at MSOE he will be joining an elite group: only four presidents have served over the course of the university’s 113-year history.

“I am extremely honored and pleased to be joining MSOE as its fifth president,” Walz said. “I look forward to working with the Board, the university’s leadership team, faculty, staff, students and alumni to continue moving MSOE forward as a national leader in innovative higher education.”

Walz succeeds Dr. Hermann Viets, who served as president for 24 years before retiring June 30, 2015. The shortest term served by an MSOE president is 14 years.

Dr. Matthew Panhans, P.E., professor and former chair of MSOE’s Mechanical Engineering Department, served as interim president while a nationwide search was conducted for Viets’ successor. When the MSOE Board of Regents began the search for a president more than a year ago, they took part in one of the most significant milestones in the life of the university.

“This year, MSOE was recognized as offering the best value of any Wisconsin college. Our goal is to increase MSOE’s relevancy in this changing world by preparing high-impact students for the jobs of tomorrow,” said Scott Moon, chairman of the MSOE Board of Regents and chairman and CEO of DLSM Inc. “Our measure of success is the impact we make in terms of graduate job demand and ultimate job-creation within our society. The MSOE Search Committee looked for a new leader capable of expanding on this important recognition.”

Walz earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Tulane University and his Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon, all in chemical engineering. As dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Kentucky, Walz led the development of a comprehensive strategic plan for advancing the college and defined the targets of an ongoing fundraising campaign. He has also made major investments to improve the retention and success of undergraduate engineering students. Walz is a strong advocate for Project Lead The Way, which operates out of the University of Kentucky College of Engineering.

“I strongly believe in the MSOE mission – preparing students for exceptional careers as leaders and entrepreneurs,” Walz said. “The success of the university in fulfilling this mission is remarkable, and there is no doubt that as our society becomes more advanced, MSOE’s importance and global impact will expand.”

Walz and his wife Moira have three daughters. Megan is pursuing her graduate degree in biosystems and agricultural engineering at the University of Kentucky, Bridget is studying architecture at Virginia Tech, and Emily is a high school student.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE The MSOE Vision Statement emphasizes our objective to “always be at the forefront of professional education with emphasis on both theory and technology, coupled with intensive laboratories and career practice.” But, we are more than top-notch engineering, nursing and business programs. It is not possible to fully portray our university’s depth and breadth in any one Dimensions, but in this issue you will see some of the varied facets of MSOE. Our excellence and distinctiveness includes our close ties to industry and industry leaders (see Spotlight on Leadership); our tradition of hiring outstanding educators and faculty (see Faculty Feature); our quality athletic program with nationally recognized student-athletes (see Raiders’ Wrap-up); and our very own over-the-air-waves tie to the Milwaukee community, WMSE radio station (see WMSE Radio 35th anniversary feature).

These and other aspects of the MSOE experience not covered in this publication make for a well-rounded, balanced MSOE community. Coupled with supporting alumni and benefactors, MSOE offers a superior learning environment for our students to grow and develop in

preparation for success in their chosen profession (as well as every other aspect of their lives).

In just over a month, we will be welcoming Dr. John Y. Walz as our new president.

SPOTLIGHT ON LEADERSHIP

Richard Galling ’75 MSOE Regent Richard Galling ’75 is in an exciting place: he recently retired as president and chief operating officer of Hammes Company Healthcare LLC, and is shifting his energy to another set of goals. “I now have the time and ability to do things that previously were just thoughts or dreams.”

He and his wife Judy have been married for 40 years. They enjoy traveling and golfing. Their son Richard is an accomplished contemporary painter with his own studio in Milwaukee, and is an adjunct professor at Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design. Among many things, Galling and his son enjoy fly fishing—a sport that has taken them to Montana, Alaska and Iceland.

Galling has always had an interest in building design and construction. His high school counselor in New Jersey recommended he attend MSOE, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Architectural and Building Construction Engineering Technology. He also became licensed in Wisconsin as both an Architect and Professional Engineer.

“MSOE had a significant impact on my career. The knowledge and experience gained during my four years at MSOE prepared me extremely well for the career I enjoyed.”

After graduation, Galling taught at MSOE for three years before going to work as the first construction analyst in Northwestern Mutual Life’s mortgage loan department where he developed his keen sense of real estate development and the importance of good investment underwriting. He then became project coordinator for the completion of Northwestern Mutual Place. “This qualified me to serve as an owners’ representative on many projects.”

Galling’s first medical office building project was the 240-acre mixed-use

University Place development in Charlotte, N.C. and this paved the way for the rest of his career. He was introduced to John Hammes in 1992. Over the next 24 years Hammes Company Healthcare LLC grew into the nation’s leading health care facility development and project management company with 14 offices from coast to coast. They were among the first to focus solely on health care real estate and ambulatory centers in the early 1990s. In 2007, Galling opened the Middle East market for the company with assignments in Kuwait, Dubai and Saudi Arabia. Galling is considered a leading national expert on the planning and development of hospitals, ambulatory facilities and medical office buildings having personally directed the development of more than 100 facilities.

For Galling, helping others is a must. He is involved with the Boy Scouts, and recently completed a twoyear term as president of the Three Harbors Council. He has served on the board of the Milwaukee Rescue Mission for the last five years and was elected president of the Mission’s board last fall. He is currently developing a master plan for the Mission’s North Campus located in one of the poorest areas of Milwaukee. He and his wife are also active members at Spring Creek Church.

He was named an MSOE Corporation member in 2013 and became a Regent in 2015. “I wanted to

give back to MSOE. I always felt really good about my education and experience.

I recognize the type of graduate that MSOE produces and the relationships the university has across multiple industries. Employers find candidates at MSOE who can contribute immediately.

I believe that is very valuable in today’s business environment.”

HIGHLIGHTS Trent Nevill named to Board of Regents Trent Nevill has joined the Board of Regents at MSOE. Nevill is the vice president, president Asia Pacific for Johnson Controls Inc. In his 20 years with the company he has served in a variety of commercial, sales and Trent Nevill operations leadership positions within building efficiency. Prior to his current role, Nevill was the vice president, North American Operations, where he significantly improved year-over-year profitability, market share, productivity and cash flow. He is a 2008 graduate of Johnson Controls’ Global Extreme Leadership Program (XLP), and multi-time recipient of both the prestigious Chairman’s Award and Merit Award. He also was a member of the JCI-York Integration Team. Nevill earned a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering from Texas A&M University.

Out of this world cryogenics presentation by NASA Wesley Johnson, a cryogenics engineer from NASA’s Glenn Research Center, visited campus to consult with a team of students who are working on a senior design project with him to research and develop methods to reduce the rate of fuel boil-off in a rocket’s second stage booster (known as Centaur). The booster is fueled by liquid hydrogen oxidized with liquid oxygen. In order to extend the operational lifespan of NASA’s Centaur upper stage, the team has investigated possibilities including explosively removing unneeded sections of the structure and using frozen water to divert the heat loads from reaching the fuel tank. In his public lecture to 120 attendees, Johnson discussed why NASA uses and needs cryogenics and how it plays into NASA’s big exploration goals.

His presentation was sponsored by MSOE and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) with support from the Wisconsin Space Grant Consortium (WSGC).

Vande Boom named ASCE New Face of Civil Engineering – College Jill Vande Boom was named one of the 2016 New Faces of Civil Engineering – College, by the American Society of Civil Engineers.

The ASCE New Faces represent the future of civil engineering. Vande Boom is pursuing a bachelor’s Jill Vande Boom degree in architectural engineering and both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in civil engineering at MSOE. She’s active in several organizations on campus and has traveled the world gaining experience. Most recently, Vande Boom traveled to Nashik, India, to compete with Team USA in the Community Plumbing Challenge. Team USA designed the winning solution to solve sanitation system problems in an elementary school.

Johnson Controls partners with MSOE Through MSOE’s Software Development Lab (SDL) program, software engineering students get the opportunity to spend three 10-week quarters uniting the theory they’ve learned in the classroom with professional practices from the software industry. Students form small teams and use software engineering tools and techniques to work on large-scale projects requested by various companies. Johnson Controls recently collaborated with two student teams through the SDL program. The teams were tasked with improving a Building Automation System software tool that harvests key data and performs advanced diagnostic analytics for the devices scattered throughout their facilities. Students worked together to develop new features and user interface components for the tool, allowing for improved access to these devices for end users.

No break for some students this spring Over spring break more than six dozen students participated in service trips through Global Brigades. A group from the medical brigade went on a nine-day trip to Nicaragua.

They worked and stayed in Datanil where they treated 868 patients in a clinic and helped nine families by building a community bathroom for them. A second group formed a water brigade and traveled to the Los Huatales communities on the volcanic island of Amapala in southern Honduras. They dug a new well and constructed a water system to transport the clean water to residents. Students also taught local children about watershed protection and what they can do to keep their water clean.

Residents of the Guatemalan village of Chumisa now have reliable, year-round access to education, health care, and economic development thanks to a bridge-building project led by MSOE students and constructed over their school break. Under the mentorship of Milwaukee-area Professional Engineers the MSOE chapter of Engineers Without Borders designed and built a 42-foot span reinforced concrete vehicular bridge that connects Chumisa to the nearby municipality of Joyabaj.

The Chumisa bridge was designated a Premier Project at the EWB-USA International Summit, an honor MSOE Global Brigades reserved for projects that deliver high quality, sustainable solutions to help meet the basic needs of partnering communities abroad.

MSOE team wins cybersecurity competition The MSOE Cyber Raiders Organization for Networking (CRON) team won the Wisconsin Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition. MSOE SAE takes first place MSOE’s Society of Automotive Engineers student chapter received first place at the 2016 SAE World Congress Student Exhibit Competition. They displayed their projects and were judged on use of an SAE Technical Standard, technical content, presentation, display, teamwork/project management and theme. MSOE hosts Fluid Power Technology Conference The inaugural Fluid Power Technology Conference, presented

by Fluid Power World, will be held at MSOE’s Kern Center June 21 and 22. MSOE Fluid Power InstituteTM and Professional Education and Research Development faculty members will present technical seminars for design engineers and maintenance personnel. MSOE students honored at MCAA convention Seniors Leah Hendricks and Andrew Palcan were awarded scholarships at the annual Mechanical Contractors Association of America (MCAA) Convention. Both are majoring in architectural engineering with a specialty in mechanical building systems and are part of the Master of Science in Architectural Engineering program. They were part of the MCAA Student Competition. Hendricks received the William A. Bianco Jr. Memorial Scholarship. She is president of MSOE’s MCAA Student Chapter. MSOE Ducks Unlimited reaches Sweet 16 again Founded in 2008, the MSOE Ducks Unlimited (DU) chapter has quite the track record. Each spring, around March Madness, the top 16 collegiate chapters are announced in Ducks Unlimited magazine. These chapters are considered to be the best of the best when it comes to fundraising and overall chapter strength. MSOE was named ninth strongest collegiate chapter in the country, which considers their efforts from 2015. Since 2009, MSOE’s chapter has been a nationally ranked Sweet 16 chapter and the top collegiate chapter in Wisconsin. MSOE has outranked and continually competed with large schools from the Big 12, Southeastern and Big 10 conferences.

Nine students qualify for National Business Competition By virtue of placing first or second in their events, nine of the MSOE students who competed at the annual Wisconsin Future Business Leaders of America/Phi Beta Lambda (FBLA/PBL) State Leadership Conference qualified for the national competition in June in Chicago. Competitive events included both written examinations and judged demonstrations in business and information technology subjects. AISC recognizes faculty member Dr. Christopher Raebel ’94, architectural engineering program director and associate professor received the 2016 Early Career Faculty Award. This award is presented by the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) and recognizes faculty who demonstrate promise in the areas of structural steel research, teaching, and/or other contributions to the structural steel industry.

Educator of the Year For the third time, Dr. Blake Wentz, chair of the Civil and Architectural Engineering and Construction Management Department, received the Mechanical Contractors Association of America’s (MCAA) Educator of the Year Award. Wentz is also the MCAA Student Chapter advisor at MSOE and won the tennis tournament at the MCAA Convention. The committee chose Wentz for his mentoring ability, industry knowledge and involvement, and active participation in student chapter program activities.

IEEE-USA Professional Leadership Award The Institute of Electrical and Electronics EngineersUSA (IEEE-USA) Board of Directors selected Dr. Russ Meier, professor as a 2015 recipient of an IEEEUSA Regional Professional Leadership Award for his efforts in promoting education and professional activities in IEEE Region 4 as well as his successful management of the 2015 IEEE-USA Annual Meeting.

MSOE’s 3-D printing experts are honored The Additive Manufacturing Users Group (AMUG) recently honored three of MSOE’s experts in additive manufacturing (also known as rapid prototyping or 3-D printing). Vince Anewenter ’11, manager of operations in MSOE’s Rapid Prototyping Center (RPC), won second place in the advanced concepts category at the AMUG Technical Competition with a 3-D printed bronze holograph. Vito Gervasi ’96, ’03, RPC manager of research and development, received a DINO (Distinguished INnovator Operator) award for additive manufacturing expertise and service. Dr. Nathan Patterson, assistant professor, was awarded the Randy Stevens Scholarship for the integration of his additive manufacturing experience and research in his engineering curricula.

The scholarship is awarded annually to one educator who emphasizes or focuses on additive manufacturing.

HIGHLIGHTS CAECM Career Night More than 70 companies attended MSOE’s Civil and Architectural Engineering and Construction Management (CAECM) Department’s annual Career Night in January to recruit students for internships and full-time employment.

Class of 2014-15 graduates of all majors from the CAECM Department had a 100 percent placement rate following graduation. Students from the department regularly participate in numerous student competitions, volunteer opportunities and professional organizations, which helps them perfect their professional skills and gain additional real-world experiences.

Changes to technical communication degree Effective Fall 2016, the Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts in Technical Communication programs will be replaced by the Bachelor of Science in User Experience and Communication Design (UXCD). The change comes in response to the evolving nature of the technical communication field, which today is much broader than simply writing and editing and now includes interface and user experience design. The new UXCD program will provide students the essential skills to design digital experiences, environments, products and services for customers and end users. The program will provide foundations of visual design and multimedia production, human factors, usability, content management and information architecture. The Technical Communication Minor will still be offered.

Martin Luther King Day of Service Students at MSOE honored Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in January by participating in a number of service opportunities on campus organized by the Servant-Leadership Department.

More than 100 students gathered in the Campus Center to write letters to breast cancer patients; make sandwiches that were distributed at the Cathedral Center and Salvation Army to the homeless; decorate and assemble gift bags filled with birthday party supplies that the YWCA will distribute to families who need help celebrating a child’s birthday; write letters to troops; and pack donated school supplies for students at Milwaukee Math and Science Academy.

Faculty authors Congratulations to Dr. David Howell, associate professor; Dr. Deborah Jackman, professor; and Mark Zimmermann, adjunct assistant professor, upon the completion and publishing of their books!

In The Descent into Happiness, Howell takes the reader on a cross-country bicycle ride while confronting a series of problems. The bicycle ride begins in Seattle and ends in Milwaukee with many of his questions answered.

Jackman’s Studies in Sustainability contains several essays to raise awareness about key environmental concerns. Each essay is tied to a painting in the Grohmann Museum, where the book may be purchased.

The artful manipulation of language is difficult enough for poets who have all 26 letters of the alphabet at their disposal. In Impersonations, Zimmermann has risen to that challenge under severe self-imposed restrictions. The poems are called ‘lipograms’—dramatic monologues that feature historical personae or literary characters speaking for themselves, but with a major difference: they are limited to the letters that occur in their own names.

St. Pat's Week 2016

St. Patrick’s Week highlights included the Kern Center Lock-in, the Engineering O’lympics competition, a S’mores bonfire, St. Pat’s Day Dance, and participation in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

Twenty-five teams participated in the annual St. Patrick’s Week egg drop, but this year only one team walked away a winner. Business major Katherine Chitkow (left) and electrical engineering major AutumnStorm McFaul floated a raw egg from three stories up safely to the ground in a parachute-inspired apparatus.

Students represented MSOE in the Shamrock Club of Wisconsin’s 50th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade on March 12. The parade featured more than 140 units and included local politicians and celebrities, floats, bagpipe and marching bands and Irish and Celtic organizations.

St. Patrick’s Week Carnival featured booths and games created by 13 student organizations. MSOE Student Life also gave away 500 T-shirts at the event.

FACULTY FEATURE Dr. Cory Prust ’01 Dr. Cory Prust’s door is always open to his students – and each spring the associate professor of electrical engineering has more than a few treat him with an unexpected visit.

“I will have these moments when they run into my office – just smiling ear to ear–saying ‘It works, its works!’” Prust said.

“I think it’s a core value of MSOE that we are here to serve our students. During my time as a student, a number of faculty at MSOE made an investment in me – an investment that went beyond teaching me the course material and then grading my exam,” he said.

Prust brings unique work experience to his classroom, having spent three years as a technical staff member at the MIT Lincoln Laboratory in Massachusetts. “I had the opportunity to work with a lot of cutting edge technology. Bringing those experiences into the classroom helps students relate the theory to real-world applications and motivates their learning.”

Spring is Senior Design Project season at MSOE; a time when students who have labored tirelessly since September (or longer) to solve a technical problem or build a prototype are finally seeing their hard work come to fruition. Prust, who serves as project advisor to four or five senior design teams each year, is just as invested in their progress. “It’s exciting to see a student develop technically and grow professionally,” he said. Being able to share in that growth is part of the reason the MSOE alumnus became a teacher.

An Algoma, Wisconsin native, Prust earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from MSOE in 2001. He also holds a doctorate in electrical and computer engineering from Purdue, which he pursued because he was interested in teaching and undergraduate education. He has authored a number of papers that have garnered national attention, including one on the use of low cost Software Defined Radios (SDRs) in the classroom.

When he was a student at MSOE, Prust said he experienced firsthand the impact a teacher could have on a student’s life and he knew then that he wanted to teach – but not just anywhere.

Prust’s main priority is providing students with the education and tools they will need for the next step on their professional journey, whether that’s a career in their chosen field or an advanced degree program.

“In addition to his outstanding work in the classroom, Cory was key in developing the Academic Undergraduate Research Program at MSOE,” said Dr. Richard Kelnhofer, electrical engineering program director. The program allows MSOE undergraduates to meaningfully participate in research and other scholarly activities under the mentorship of an MSOE faculty member. “We’ve had students publish their work and give presentations at national conferences,” Prust said. “It’s a great experience for them and it’s also great for MSOE.” Prust tries not to give students too much unsolicited advice, but he does offer the following: “I think there is no substitute for hard work,” he said. “If you are willing to put in the hard work, then I think you’ll be rewarded in ways that are meaningful to you.”

Winter Commencement Commencement is one of the most joyful days on campus. Parents, families, friends, faculty, staff, Regents and dignitaries gathered at Winter Commencement in February to celebrate the success and accomplishments of the more than 80 students who are now proud MSOE alumni.

Sharing in their pride was Professor Emeritus Owe Petersen, Ph.D., who received an Honorary Doctor of Engineering degree and delivered the keynote address.

Following a 30-year career at AT&T Bell Laboratories as a member of technical staff in research and development, Petersen brought his real-world experiences into the classroom. He retired from MSOE in 2015 after 22 years of service in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department. He also served as assistant vice president of institutional research Dr. Owe Petersen and assessment. In his keynote address, he said, “It is for you to decide where you want to go and what you want to do. As long as you are alive, as long as you are kicking, keep trying.

There is chance in life. There is luck in life. If you prepare and advance yourself, you can position yourself so the chances favor you. Be an active participant in life. You have people who are active on teams and then there are those who are just on the team. Ask yourself, ‘Who do you want to be?’ The answer to that question is how you prepare yourself to succeed.”

Kristi Noll was the class respondent, the honor that goes to the graduate with the highest GPA. Noll graduated with high honors and a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing. She said, “If you are 99 percent Kristi Noll

Students Help Jamaicans Capitalize on

Low-Hanging Fruit Eight students from MSOE’s University Scholars honors program are participating in a yearlong project to design and build a solar food dehydrator for a rural village in Jamaica.

They were asked by the Blue Mountain Project, a nonprofit located in the Blue Mountains of Jamaica, to design technology to dehydrate mangoes—a crop that is largely unused in the region. The Blue Mountain Project partners with rural farming communities to improve the health, education and economy in the region. The team also was tasked with creating a business model and training program to teach Jamaicans how to use the equipment.

“The project has really helped us to put the users (the community) not only in-mind, but at the forefront,” said Josh Shefner, civil engineering major and team leader. “In every aspect, we’ve designed around the end user to the best of our ability, and it’s turned out very well because of that focus.”

for a computer lab in the Blue Mountain region. The lab was constructed in 2014 by MSOE alumnus Jeff Hanson ’13 through Project Community Computers, an organization he led as a student. His work continues today and the organization has been renamed Digital Bridge, an independent nonprofit.

Each week since September, the team members have spent three hours per week in class and an additional five hours outside of class working on the project. “The team has really gone above and beyond to make this a success,” said Shefner.

The team was awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation Innovation-Corps. The NSF I-Corps brings together academic researchers, graduate students and business networks through research-generated ideas that are honed in collaboration with industry. MSOE is one of five academic institutions in Milwaukee that joined forces to form a local site of the National Innovation Network and award grants.

Through The Commons, a collegiate entrepreneurial skills accelerator that connects students from Southeastern Wisconsin to work on real-world projects, they recruited five interns with international backgrounds and an interest in working with technology, nonprofit organizations, and international businesses and relations. They are meeting weekly to replicate the project in other countries. “I hope to use engineering as an entryway into international development work,” said Shefner. “This has been my first experience with that, and it’s been affirmative as it pertains to my plans.”

The business plan calls for the Jamaicans to dehydrate the mangoes and package them for sale in the U.S. by youth athletic teams and scouting programs as an alternative to candy bar fund raisers.

Research Experience Sends

Students Around the World

F

rom aneurysm repairs to additive manufacturing techniques, the Research

Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program at MSOE has focused on a wide range of micro-manufacturing applications in the aerospace, architectural, biomedical, biomolecular, composite, electro-optical, fluid power and manufacturing industries. REU is a prestigious 10-week summer program funded by the National Science Foundation™, MSOE’s Rapid Prototyping Center, MSOE’s Fluid Power Institute™ and the Center for Compact and Efficient Fluid Power (CCEFP). It exists to give undergraduates practical experience in research, and is one of several research opportunities for students at MSOE.

To date, 182 undergraduate students from around the country have been involved in REU at MSOE, which will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2016. Last summer, two MSOE students had the extraordinary experience of spending six weeks conducting research in additive manufacturing at the National Laser Center (NLC) located at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in Pretoria, South Africa. The partnership between MSOE and South Africa came as a result of research Dr. Subha Kumpaty, MSOE professor and REU coordinator, completed while collaborating with Dr. Esther Aklinabi of the University of Johannesburg.

While in South Africa, Robert Mueller and Chris Reynolds, both mechanical engineering majors, researched adding molybdenum to Ti64. Ti64 is an alloy commonly used in the aerospace industry or in applications where high strength and light weight are required. Mueller explored adding molybdenum to the alloy to increase its ability to withstand high temperatures and enhance its wear resistance. He varied the laser power in an additive manufacturing process to find which laser power best suited the new alloy. Reynolds investigated adding molybdenum Robert Mueller

to a Ti64 substrate surface to improve its durability and determine its biocompatibility for biomedical applications. “It was a once in a lifetime experience,” said Reynolds.

and they were shocked that I was entering my senior year as an undergraduate. It was very humbling to know that I am getting such a great learning experience at MSOE.”

They created alloy samples at the NLC and brought them to the University of Johannesburg to be analyzed. “I was highly impressed with Bobby and Chris’s efforts,” said Aklinabi. “The quality of the work they completed was that of master level students. I wish they could have stayed longer than six weeks.”

Alyssa Loepfe, a biomedical engineering senior at MSOE, focused her REU project on cerebral aneurysms. She used computational fluid dynamics to analyze blood flow patterns before and after proposed surgical modifications for an aneurysm. A previous research project by Brittany Callen ’15 resulted in a 3-D printed model of an aneurysm, which Loepfe used as a reference. MSOE’s RPC generated the model from computed tomography angiography (CTA) images. Because of over-smoothing, a new geometry needed to be constructed to perform flow analysis using the original CTA images. The results of this research will allow surgeons to determine the

Her research involved using mammalian cell culture of human intestinal cells to test the impact of Lactobacillus casei, a common gut microbe, on intestinal inflammation. She presented her work and received second place in the Microbiology, Virology and Immunology category at the Emerging Researchers National Conference in STEM in Washington D.C. in February. “It’s a really good experience to have people who are experts in their field asking you about your research,” said Hornberger, a biomolecular engineering major.

Loepfe comes from a long line of MSOE graduates, but she is the first female—and the first to pursue biomedical engineering—in her family. “MSOE is a highly regarded institution for engineering.

I knew it would give me great opportunities,” she said. “Working on this project with Dr. Vitaliy Rayz at the Medical College of Wisconsin was one of the best experiences because he had been performing research in this area for several years. I learned so much from him and Dr. Jeffrey LaMack ’97, my advisor at MSOE.” Loepfe, Mueller and Reynolds travelled to North Carolina in April to present their work at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research. Their projects were chosen from more than 4,000 submissions, for their unique contributions to their fields of study.

Prototyping

Bringing research ideas to life MSOE’s Rapid Prototyping Center is celebrating its 25th anniversary. Since 1991, MSOE has been at the forefront of 3-D printing/additive manufacturing. The RPC is involved in supporting product process and research and development activities at companies large and small. From medical tools and implants to full-size vehicles, chances are great that many of the products that you see or use every day began as a 3-D prototype at MSOE. The RPC is supported by the university’s Rapid Prototyping consortium, which includes more than 40 industrial companies that cooperate in understanding the consortium’s vitality and success in providing product development solutions using additive manufacturing technologies.

The RPC plays an important educational role at MSOE. The center works closely with several senior design teams, MSOE classes, and MSOE summer programs to produce prototypes for a variety projects. The RPC has also supported the REU program since it began.

Milwaukee’s Industrial Landscapes: Paintings by Michael Newhall May 27-Aug. 21, 2016 The Grohmann Museum is well-known for its outstanding collection of industrial landscape paintings, many from centers of European industry like Germany’s Ruhr River Valley. However, more regional and local depictions are far less common. This exhibition provides an opportunity to highlight Milwaukee’s industry and changing views of the city in post-industrial situations. The works selected for this exhibition—many executed in Michael Newhall’s trademark Regionalist/Ashcan style—capture engaging scenes of Milwaukee’s urban landscape and provide an opportunity to reflect on the city’s recent past. Newhall has taught art and Buddhism at Naropa University, the Art Institute of Chicago, Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, and other universities in the Midwest. His works can be found in a number of public and private collections.

The Welder The Welder, a Public Works of Art Project (PWAP) painting by Clinton, Wisconsin, native Lee Frederickson, has found a home at the Grohmann Museum. This oil on canvas is on long-term loan from the Fine Arts Program at the U.S. General Services Administration. GSA is the federal agency that has stewardship for the portable artwork created under Roosevelt’s New Deal art projects (1933-1943). RAIDERS’ WRAP-UP Kotarak named NCAA All-American Freshman Jerica Kotarak was named an NCAA Track and Field All-American in the triple jump by taking seventh in the triple jump at the NCAA Championships.

She extended her own school and conference record by 5 inches, finishing with a final jump of 38-7 3/4. She also competed in the long jump as one of just two freshmen to compete at the meet in two events this season.

Kotarak had a dream first-season as a Raider. She set, then re-set the school record over the 60-meter, long jump and triple jump events a combined nine times.

Denfeld, Kroll named NACC Players of the Year Junior Holly Denfeld and Senior Megan Kroll each earned NACC Player of the Year honors when the conference announced its post-season women’s basketball awards.

Denfeld was named the NACC Player of the Year, while Kroll was selected as the NACC Defensive Player of the Year. Both players were also named to the All-NACC First Team. These are the first player of the year awards for MSOE since 2011-12 when Carol Cayo earned both honors. This also marks the second-straight season the Raiders have placed two on the All-NACC First Team.

The highlight of Denfeld’s campaign was Feb. 2, when she scored a school-record 40 points along with 17 rebounds at Edgewood.

She also tied a school record with a 12-for-12 performance at the free throw line in the game and was subsequently named the USBWA National Player of the Week, to the D3hoops.com National Team of the Week, and was voted the HEROSports.com HERO of the Week.

Kroll averaged 11.8 points, 6.4 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game. On the defensive end of the floor, she was third in the league with 68 steals and 10th with 24 blocks, despite playing point guard. She was often tasked with guarding the opponent’s top backcourt scorer and excelled in the role. She had a steal in 24-of-26 games and had multiple steals 19 times. She led a team defensive effort that was third in the NACC with just 55.3 points allowed per game, narrowly second with a 34.7 percent opponent field goal percentage and first in opponent three-point percentage at just 23.7 percent.

The Raiders went 18-8 this season, posting their best-ever conference record and finish. They were 16-4 in league play and tied for second place.

Denfeld wins prestigious Jostens Trophy Junior Holly Denfeld was named the recipient of the 2016 Jostens Trophy by the Salem (Va.) Rotary Club.

The Jostens Trophy is a national award created by the Salem Rotary Club to honor the most outstanding men’s and women’s NCAA Division III basketball players of the year. The award takes into account three vital parts: basketball ability, academic prowess and community service. The trophy models the Rotary International motto of “Service Above Self ” by recognizing those who truly fit the ideal of the well-rounded NCAA Division III student-athlete.

In the classroom, Denfeld has maintained a 4.00 GPA as an architectural engineering and construction management major. She was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team, her second-straight Academic AllAmerica award.

On the court, Denfeld was named the NACC Player of the Year and made her third-straight appearance on the All-NACC First Team. She led the conference in scoring at 19.7 points per game—three points better than any other player, as well as field goal percentage with a school-record 58.4 percent shooting from the field.

She is also third in the conference in rebounding at 9.7 rebounds per game and posted 12 double-doubles this season.

In addition to balancing her academic and athletic successes, Denfeld has found time to be active in the community. She has logged numerous hours with Habitat for Humanity, Milwaukee Empty Bowls, Kayla’s Crew, Sam’s Hope, as well as with the Milwaukee Heart Walk and Walk for Diabetes. She’s also been a student leader with the MSOE Student-Athlete Advisory Council on campus.

Stueck named All-NACC First Team for fourth time Senior Austin Stueck of the men’s basketball team was named to the AllNACC First Team for an unprecedented fourth-straight season.

Stueck, who became the league’s first two-time Player of the Year in 2014 and 2015, makes his fourth appearance on the league’s first team. Meanwhile, senior Connor Patterson was named All-NACC Honorable Mention.

Stueck capped his illustrious career in outstanding fashion, setting careerhighs in scoring, rebounding and assists, while leading the team in all three categories. He is poised to repeat as the NACC’s scoring champion at 22.5 points per game. He also averaged 6.9 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game, adding a team-best 38 steals. He scored 20-or-more points 19 times in 28 games, including 30-plus points three times and a 42-point outing.

Stueck saved the best for the end of the season when he averaged 29.0 points during the NACC Tournament in guiding the Raiders to the championship game. He scored for 42 points and a school-record 10 threepointers in the semifinals at Aurora. He also set a NACC tournament record for points and three-pointers in the game.

PROFILE IN PLANNED GIVING

Planning for future generations Darryl Kaminski ’77, ’81 never could have predicted that his career would take him around the world, but his willingness to take advantage of opportunities, try new things and treat others with respect opened many doors. In the Air Force, he trained to become a medic and briefly served in Vietnam. Upon returning home, he worked as a medical technician at St. Mary’s and St. Joe’s hospitals.

Mutual friends set him up on a blind date with Patricia, whom he would end up marrying. Patricia was among the first physician assistants in Wisconsin and a female pioneer in the field. She attended Duke University, the birthplace of the physician assistant profession. Ultimately, Patricia worked with Dr. Derward Lepley Jr., who led Wisconsin’s first heart transplant surgery team. The team also completed countless coronary bypass and valve replacement procedures, and Patricia was responsible for taking patients’ veins, assisting the surgeon and closing patients’ chests at the completion of the operation.

After a few years, Darryl left health care to work at Briggs & Stratton. Following a layoff Patricia encouraged him to take advantage of his GI Bill and he enrolled at MSOE for his associate degree. Patricia, ever the academic, also enrolled in a few classes.

Darryl next took a position as a supervisor at EZ Paintr, manufacturing paint applicators. He wanted to pursue a career in management so he continued at MSOE to earn his bachelor’s degree in industrial management.

“I really liked MSOE,” said Darryl. “The faculty treated me as a colleague—especially Roger Frankowski, Bob Loss and Peter Kuhfittig. MSOE showed how much they cared in 1981 when my father passed away. It was during finals week, and they provided a tutor to help me get through.”

Darryl’s creative thinking and problem-solving skills helped him advance at EZ Paintr, which later became Shur-Line, a Newell Rubbermaid company. He traveled extensively, visiting plants throughout the U.S., China, Indonesia, Europe and more. As the product manager of brush technology and development, he also oversaw facility acquisitions and closings.

As Newell expanded, Darryl was often requested to assist in the development of other divisions including Newell Rubbermaid and Sharpie Pens.

Now retired, the Kaminskis travel the world, often visiting Newell Rubbermaid employees with whom Darryl still keeps in

contact. They enjoy racing their horses.

Patricia loves spending time in the barns, while Darryl focuses on handicapping horses for the races.

One of their horses, River Place, races at Arlington Park and two will soon go to Churchill Downs. They also enjoy their smaller four-legged friends at home: Olaf and Shiloh, two Keeshond show dogs.

In 2007, the Kaminskis created the Darryl L. Kaminski ’81 Endowed Scholarship Fund at MSOE. “We really enjoy meeting the students we are helping,” said Patricia. They have also committed a planned gift to MSOE in their estate plan.

Although Darryl’s path to success was far from a straight one, he feels he owes it all to MSOE.

“We are pleased that we are now able to give others the same opportunity at MSOE that I found so valuable.”

Matt Mundt ’14

Throughout my childhood, I had a keen interest in designing, building, improving and repairing things. I had an affinity for math and science, and was fascinated by technology. I considered myself an “idea” person and I wanted to use that creative energy to develop tomorrow’s products. I first learned about ways I could grow my natural skills and interests into a possible career when I was attending Pius XI High School in Milwaukee and took Project Lead The Way courses. That experience got me seriously interested in a mechanical engineering career. With its stellar reputation, MSOE was my first choice when it came to colleges.

At MSOE I was awarded the Gerald C. Ruehlow Scholarship, which enabled me to be a mechanical design intern at Generac Power System my freshman year. Following Generac, I took advantage of internships at Harley-Davidson and Milwaukee Electric Tool. Upon graduation I landed a position at Harley-Davidson as a mechanical design engineer in the Product Design Center.

I came across an opening for a product design engineer at Apple and decided to apply. After many rigorous interviews, I was offered the position and I moved to Cupertino, California. I am currently responsible for the exploration and design of new and innovative technologies for Apple products—everything from concept generation and development to detailed industrial design, analysis and testing through mass production. I collaborate with many cross-functional teams and have traveled the world in support of various projects.

MSOE’s strong ties to local industries and related internship opportunities made all the difference.

MSOE provided me with an applications-oriented approach to engineering. The real-world projects and equipment that closely mirrored what one might find in a professional engineering position helped me accelerate my career. Small class sizes and access to faculty helped me greatly. MSOE’s strong ties to local industries and related internship opportunities made all the difference.

While some of my peers in engineering at other schools were struggling to find paid internships, I was exposed to a steady stream of opportunities, and took advantage of them to build my resume.

To MSOE students: appreciate the fact that MSOE is a highly regarded university and has great connections to local companies.

Use these resources; aggressively pursue internships and perform well to build the strong base that will serve as a launching pad for your career moving forward. While serving as an intern, become proficient with as many software tools as possible, and pursue any certifications or special training that is offered.

MSOE challenged me and helped me grow, both personally and professionally, and for that I will always be grateful.

A new event at this year’s gathering is the Matt Stachelski Memorial Bike Ride, an opportunity to honor the memory of the technical communication alumnus who had a passion for cycling. We also will explore Milwaukee’s past and present from its rivers, harbors and Lake Michigan on a private charter.

The classes of ’66 and ’91 from MSOE and MCGHSN will be honored with a special reunion dinner, and the Technical Communication program is celebrating its 30th anniversary.
