This issue of Dimensions brings into focus our ongoing effort to partner with business and industry (see page 14). Most of our readers are aware that our founder, Oscar Werwath, held informal classes which rapidly grew into MSOE. The reason is clear: a strong demand for technical education from both students and industry that has persisted for the past 111 years.

In many ways the most direct input into MSOE’s operations comes from our advisory committees. Each academic program has had an advisory committee since the founding days of the university. They provide detailed feedback, as well as specific ideas for modifying and sometimes overhauling the curriculum. This ensures that we produce graduates in tune with the needs of employers and well prepared to adapt to change. Building this compatibility ensures the employability and long-term success of our graduates.

It takes a good deal of volunteer effort to carry out these broadly outlined steps. We are indebted to all those individuals who contribute so generously of their time and expertise to keep MSOE at the leading edge.

Risk and reward Kevin Fletcher is not afraid to take risks. The MSOE Regent walked away from a successful 34-year tenure at Georgia Power and Southern Company, where he started as an 18-year-old Georgia Tech electrical engineering co-op student, to become the senior vice president of customer operations at We Energies in Milwaukee. “If someone asked me 10 years ago, ‘Will you ever live in Milwaukee?’ I would’ve said no. But I always told my boys to not be afraid to get out of their comfort zones. So when this opportunity came up, my sons told me, ‘Isn’t this what you always tell us dad?’ So I couldn’t turn it down,” he said. “In the end, I felt it was a great career opportunity and my family was extremely supportive.”

Kevin’s tips for success: • Find a balance. The best employees are those who have a good balance of work and personal time.

• Don’t be afraid to take a risk and accept challenges. When you’re presented with an opportunity, raise your hand.

• Diversify. My background is EE but most of my career has been in nonengineering areas like customer service and marketing.

Graduates can and do make a difference.”

In his free time, Fletcher enjoys barefoot water skiing and spending time with this wife and grown children. While he and his family are embracing their new life in Milwaukee, they still haven’t fully adjusted to Wisconsin winters. “When I left Georgia Power my teammates gave me a gift certificate to Cabela’s. I bought more coats and hats than I’ve ever had in my life. But like my wife says, it’s only a number.”

Art Shay: Working May 16 – Aug. 17, 2014 Nihil sine magno labore (nothing without great labor) was one of the few things legendary photographer Art Shay learned in his year at Brooklyn College before service as a much-decorated lead navigator in World War II. Though he was unsure of the significance of the Latin phrase at the time, its impact surely was felt throughout Shay’s career as a photographer for LIFE, Time and Fortune magazines, leading to his work in a variety of labor situations. Be they images of linemen or those on the assembly line, his affinity for capturing work and the worker has produced an unparalleled catalogue of images of human industry in its many forms. This special exhibition features a selection of dozens of Shay’s finest scenes of work, labor and pictures “made of fellow and sister laborers.”

HIGHLIGHTS Viets Field named a Top Project of 2013 The Daily Reporter named MSOE’s Pamela and Hermann Viets Field as one of the Top Projects of 2013. The award is given to the most challenging, innovative and awe-inspiring Wisconsin construction projects from 2013 that: • have a lasting effect on the community in which they were built • had serious challenges that were met by contractors on the job • used construction innovations • served their purpose with extraordinary efficiency and style • showed excellence in planning, engineering, design and construction management.

Kevin Morin named vice president of operations Kevin Morin was appointed vice president of operations at MSOE. He was previously the human resources director and now oversees the following departments on campus: Athletics, Environmental Health and Safety, Facilities, Food Service, Human Resources, Kern Center, Bookstore, Public Safety and Residence Life. Morin came to MSOE in 1978 as an admissions Kevin Morin counselor after earning his bachelor’s degree from Marquette University. In 1980, Morin became the evening college coordinator/assistant registrar, where he worked until he moved into the Human Resources Department in 1982. Morin also served as the head wrestling coach for 20 years before he stepped down at the end of the 2013 season. He received the Johanna Seelhorst Werwath Distinguished Staff Award in 1986.

MSOE grads continue to succeed MSOE’s Career Services Office reports that the class of 201213 enjoyed a 96 percent placement rate and average starting salary of $55,709. The 2013-14 PayScale College Salary Report takes a bigger look at the employment landscape and reports similar findings: MSOE graduates earn the highest average starting salary and have the highest mid-career salary ($93,900) of any college or university in Wisconsin. PayScale Inc. surveyed alumni from more than 1,000 colleges and universities nationwide. Alumni are encouraged to complete the survey at www.PayScale.com.

MSOE appoints dean of students and chair for servant-leadership Dr. David Howell has been appointed dean of students. He is a member of the faculty in the General Studies Department and held the Pieper Family Foundation Endowed Chair for Servant-Leadership. As dean of students, Howell oversees various areas pertaining to student life: Counseling Services, the Learning Resource Center, Mentor Program, Dr. David Howell Servant-Leadership, Student Activities, Student Government, TRIO Programs and Women’s Connections.

DeAnna Leitzke ’98, ’08, P.E. succeeds Howell as the chair for servant-leadership. She is an assistant professor in the Civil and Architectural Engineering and Construction Management DeAnna Leitzke ’98, ’08, P.E. Department and has facilitated dozens of service projects at MSOE which have given students the opportunity to practice the tenants of servant-leadership as they utilize the knowledge gained in their course work. She will continue to teach in the CAECM Department, where she specializes in construction management.

New mechatronics/fluid power lab coming soon The NFPA Education and Technology Foundation awarded $97,000 to MSOE to establish a mechatronics/fluid power laboratory. Fluid power, mechatronics and computer technologies will be used to build student skills in modeling and simulation as well as in experimental techniques and instrumentation. Open-ended laboratory and design experiences will foster innovation and better prepare graduates to work in emerging fields of mobile hydraulics, industrial pneumatics, sustainable energy technologies and more. Dr. John Pakkala, associate professor, and Dr. Joseph Musto, professor, will lead the development of the laboratory in the Mechanical Engineering Department. The lab is scheduled to be ready for student use by Fall 2015.

Biomolecular engineers win Business Plan Competition A team of biomolecular engineering majors took first place in the eighth annual MSOE Business Plan Competition. Team UBank’s winning plan featured Millibank: a noncryogenic umbilical cord tissue storage system, for which the team received $2,000. An abstract for their project was accepted to the 4th International Conference on Stem Cell Engineering in March, and the team presented a poster at the conference in Coronado, Calif.

MSOE named military-friendly university For the third straight year, MSOE has been named a Top Military-Friendly University by Military Advanced Education in its 2014 Guide to Military-Friendly Colleges & Universities. The guide provides prospective students with information about institutions that go out of their way to give back to men and women in uniform.

Graduate & Professional Education MSOE’s Continuing Studies & Outreach (CSO) Department has been renamed Graduate & Professional Education (GPE). With MSOE’s expanded array of graduate programs and increased graduate enrollment, the new name is easily recognized and more reflective of GPE’s functions. GPE’s primary functions include marketing, recruitment and admissions for graduate programs and also non-credit offerings, customized corporate training, PEAK offerings for P.E. re-licensure and Business Excellence Consortium preferred membership.

New MBA Fellowship in Education Leadership To close achievement gaps not only between America’s lowest and highest performing schools but also between top-performing schools and those around the world, MSOE has partnered with the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation to create a new MBA in Education Leadership at MSOE. The new program for preparing principals will blend college coursework and a tailored business curriculum with intensive clinical experience in schools, corporations, and nonprofits, and involvement in innovative schools abroad.

Participants may apply to the Woodrow Wilson MBA Fellowship to receive funding to support the cost of the 13-month executive-style MBA. The program, one of the first in the nation, will recruit and prepare experienced educators. Offered through MSOE’s Rader School of Business, it will be equivalent in rigor to traditional MBA programs. It is designed to prepare leaders who will drive innovation in schools, expand the use of analytics and evidence-based practices, raise student performance to international standards, and improve the quality of school systems and teaching over time. HIGHLIGHTS Alumni share experiences Three alumni shared their wisdom and insight on what true leadership is at MSOE’s third annual Leadership Day. Julia Klinge ’99 EE, coil engineering manager, GE Healthcare; James Gerloff ’00 AE, ’04 MSST, P.E., chief operating officer at J3 Engineering Group LLC (pictured at right); and Brandon Rosner ’02 BMS, MSOE Alumni Association president and state of Wisconsin health/IT business consultant, gave presentations and spent time networking with students.

MCAA student organization reached final four MSOE’s Mechanical Contractors Association of America student chapter was one of four finalists and defending champion in the national MCAA Student Chapter Competition. This is the fourth straight year they have qualified. Twenty-four teams submitted proposals involving the installation of the HVAC and plumbing systems at the Sports Protein Inc. facility in Chicago that also included design features exceeding LEED Platinum requirements and a post-construction service component. MSOE’s team traveled to Scottsdale, Ariz., in March to present their proposals at MCAA’s national convention, where they finished in third place. Dr. Blake Wentz, associate professor and construction management program director, is the group’s advisor.

Students study art in Germany Associate Professor Patrick Jung, Ph.D. recently led a group of MSOE students and alumni to Munich, Germany, to study art and art history as part of a course in the General Studies Department. Before leaving, the group studied the Man at Work collection in the Grohmann Museum for examples of various styles of art over the centuries. In Munich, the group visited several museums and saw artwork from the Renaissance through Modern periods, as well as baroque architecture and Nymphenburg Palace. They also met with MSOE Regent Dr. Eckhart Grohmann, who donated the Man at Work collection and subsequently the funds to purchase, renovate and operate the Grohmann Museum. “After taking this class, I can appreciate art a great deal more. I really enjoyed being able to see the same pieces of art in the Grohmann Museum and in Munich. I felt that being able to recognize these masterpieces at home helped prepare me for this trip,” said Lauren Backhaus, electrical engineering senior.

“OP”portunity Conference Teams from more than 70 high schools put their computer, math and science skills to the test during MSOE’s annual “OP”portunity conference.

The conference gives students the opportunity to demonstrate excellence in academic pursuits.

• Parker High School, Janesville, Wis., won the computer competition.

• Lake Forest (Ill.) Academy won the math competition.

• Vernon Hills (Ill.) High School won the science competition (pictured, right).

Appleton West wins regional Science Bowl Appleton (Wis.) West High School (Team A) won the Wisconsin regional championship in the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Science Bowl® for high school students, held at MSOE. The team will travel to Washington D.C., to compete for the national championship. Sixteen teams of Wisconsin students participated in the regional competition and were quizzed on biology, chemistry, earth and science, physics, astronomy and math.

Eighth graders solve fluid power challenges Nearly 200 eighth grade students descended on the MSOE campus in December to participate in the Fluid Power Challenge, sponsored by MSOE and the National Fluid Power Association. They used their skills to design and construct a fluid power mechanism to pick up weighted objects and place them on a platform. Teams from Mitchell Middle School, Racine, Wis., were the Overall Champion and Team Challenge Champion; Starbuck Middle School, Racine, Wis., was the Portfolio Champion; LuxemburgCasco (Wis.) Middle School was the Design Champion; Carter’s Christian Academy, Milwaukee, was the Team Work Champion; and Bruce Guadalupe Middle School, Milwaukee, received Honorable Mention.

“My mom used to be an architect in South Korea, and my dad

used to run a construction company in Seoul. So I grew up in that environment,” he said. Woo obtained his bachelor’s in architectural engineering in Korea and worked for several years as a project estimator for the Great Man-Made River Project

“I’m tough on them; they have to meet my expectation. We go there to win; that’s the MSOE spirit.” in Libya. “It was a great experience, but I wanted to pursue an advanced degree to be more competitive professionally.”

So he traveled to Texas A&M University, where he obtained his master’s in construction management and Ph.D. in architectural engineering.

After working as a teaching assistant while pursuing his Ph.D., Woo decided he wanted to stay in academia after completing his degree. He came to MSOE in 2007 as an assistant professor in the Civil and Architectural Engineering and Construction Management Department, and was named associate professor in 2012.

Woo enjoys teaching at MSOE because, “The students here are high performing, highly motivated, smart students who have a great passion for the construction industry. It’s really

rewarding to work with them. That’s one thing. The other is the curriculum here, which is the best in the country because we can easily adopt and implement new curriculum components to make our students more competitive.”

In addition to the courses he teaches, Woo serves as coach for the Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) student team, which has won the ASC National Preconstruction Competition three times (in 2010, 2011 and 2012) under his tutelage. “My role is to help them prepare the necessary materials and skills for competition. I meet with them once a week. They do a mock competition with me and I review their materials and give them feedback. I’m tough on them; they have to meet my expectation. We go there to win; that’s the MSOE spirit.” And win they do! Since entering the competition in 1999, MSOE has had 17 top three places in national competitions and eight national championship teams.

Students have to pass an interview process just to make it on the team, and they don’t receive credit for their work.

While winning is an added benefit, the valuable career exposure is another. “Even more exciting than the competition is right after it’s over. HR managers from national construction companies approach students and literally offer them job interviews. A lot of my students have gotten job offers as a result of the competition.”

Woo sets the same high standards for his three children, aged 14, 11 and 8. “My daughter plays the violin and she won first place in a Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra competition,” he noted proudly. “I’m kind of competitive, and so are my kids.”

Winter Commencement The MSOE alumni community grew by more than 70 after Winter Commencement held in March.

MSOE Regent Scott Moon received an Honorary Doctor of Business and Economics degree and delivered the keynote address.

Class respondent Scott Libert graduated with high honors and received a mechanical engineering technology degree. Libert encouraged his fellow graduates to consider the family and friends who supported them. “These people encouraged us to keep going when we thought we couldn’t. In fact, each person in the audience has played a role in the journey to today’s ceremony.”

MSOE Regent Scott Moon is chairman and CEO of DLSM Inc., a holding company containing Res Manufacturing and Kondex Corp.

Moon talked about what he learned from his experience becoming a supplier to Tesla Motors. He discussed four key points needed for success: be prepared to change your thinking; values matter; persistence and scrappiness are key; and you must take on risk.

Campus Improvements MSOE is in a constant state of adding and updating campus buildings and equipment. Some, like the new Viets Field and Tower Apartments, are more noticeable than others. But all are important to keeping campus resources up-to-date and in good working condition. Below we highlight some recent campus improvements, including one of the newest laboratory additions.

The Environmental and Water Resources Laboratory is one of the newest in the Civil and Architectural Engineering and Construction Management (CAECM) Department. Here, Jesse Becker makes adjustments to the open flume, which models the movement of water in an open channel. All CAECM students study fluid mechanics, and use the equipment in this lab for demonstrations and testing.

There will be 102 modern apartments, mostly studios, available in the Tower Apartments, 1150 N. Water St., for September 2014! Application acceptance began on March 31 and the units are going fast. Apartments are furnished and include kitchen appliances, heat, AC, electricity and water. Rents range from $1,100–2,600 per month for nine– or 12–month leases, with most units allowing up to two occupants. This is a special pre-opening discount. Other recent campus improvements include: Communication and Signal Processing Laboratory: Upgraded tables, added new lights, audio/visual equipment, sound panels and a new floor.

The lab now has its own HVAC system, making it more efficient.

Student Life & Campus Center: A rebuilt HVAC unit improves efficiency and a new emergency generator was installed to provide power back-up for emergency lighting and laboratory equipment housed in that building.

CC-36: This CAECM classroom now has a new whiteboard and drafting tables.

SUB Zero Days Anyone who has spent a winter in Wisconsin knows that the winter months seemingly never end—especially this past winter! SUB Zero Days, sponsored by MSOE’s Student Union Board, served up a much-needed distraction with fun, quirky games like Live Angry Birds, Hunger Games Dodgeball and indoor mini golf, comedian Adam Grabowski and more.

WMSE Local/Live

WMSE’s Local/Live invites a different Milwaukee-area band to the studios for a live, on-air appearance. In March, the show hosted a special segment when it broadcasted live from MSOE’s Todd Wehr Auditorium with band Bright Kind. Students and the MSOE community were invited to attend the free concert as a new concert series sponsored by WMSE and Student Activities.

WMSE Rockabilly Chili This year’s WMSE chili cookoff set a single-event fundraising record for the station, raising more than $60,000—a 24 percent increase from last year. More than 3,600 visitors sampled chili from 60 Milwaukee restaurants, cafés, caterers and even the Milwaukee Fire Department (new this year). Also new was a popular children’s area run by Artists Working in Education, and chili pepper races modeled after the Milwaukee Brewers racing sausages. Win Win MSOE has a long tradition of partnering with area businesses. In fact, a $500 donation from Louis Allis in 1905 is what enabled MSOE founder Oscar Werwath to grow the institution and help meet the high demand for technically trained individuals. MSOE still enjoys strong connections with businesses, but the opportunities for partnerships have expanded in a multitude of ways. In an ongoing series, we will identify some of these partnerships to show the wide variety of ways in which businesses are staying connected to MSOE—and benefitting because of it.

nap-on Incorporated’s many connections to MSOE range from scholarship and internship support to equipment donations and membership in MSOE’s Rapid Prototyping Consortium (RPC). And while these efforts lead to valuable support and opportunities for MSOE students, they also help Snap-on’s bottom line. “Since we provide innovative solutions for our customers, we have to also be very watchful of emerging technologies,” said Tom Kassouf, president, Snap-on Tools Group and MSOE Corporation member. “Being part of the RPC is a way for us to remain vigilant on technologies that will offer new opportunities for problem solutions.”

Maintaining a presence amongst MSOE students was the impetus for a substantial recent donation of Snap-on tools to be used by students. “We like the idea of putting our tools and products in the hands of students as they are forming their ideas about engineering,” noted Kassouf. “As we began working with MSOE more closely over the last few years it just seemed to me that it was a natural fit between what students were being educated to do and what our purpose is, which is to produce the best productivity solutions in the world.”

For Kassouf, MSOE students are a valuable resource. “Businesses like ours continue to have a deep and important need for people capable of dealing with today’s technology. MSOE is a place where graduates emerge with those skills, and we want to remain relevant to them. We can count on MSOE to deliver graduates who are prepared to work in industry. The Rexnord Innovation Center, part of Rexnord Corporation, is tasked with promoting advanced technology, breakthrough research and innovation for the $2 billion, multi-platform diversified global industrial company based in Milwaukee. To facilitate growth and product development, Rexnord is always on the lookout for new team members interested in building their expertise. “We believe it’s important to develop strong technical talent,” said Dan Glusick ’02, vice president, Rexnord Innovation Center. “We’re looking for people to bring new ideas, complement existing skill sets and learn from the experience we have in different areas through internship and graduate engineering development programs,” noted Glusick.

Glusick and two of his colleagues were recently on campus to conduct interviews for the Rexnord Innovation Center Scholarship, which provides a $5,000 award along with a paid summer internship. Rexnord’s relationship with MSOE is not only valuable to the university, but to the company as well. “Because of MSOE’s applications-oriented education, less skills training is needed for MSOE graduates,” noted Rachel Byers, global human resource director—engineering, innovation and product management for Rexnord. “To meet Rexnord’s exciting growth and globalization strategy, we need a strong pool of technical talent to reach those goals,” said Dr. Joseph Hamann, senior R&D engineer with Rexnord. “Our relationship with MSOE translates into a stronger pipeline for us,” said Hamann. “We’re in this together,” added Glusick. “We’re deliberately trying to strengthen the relationship with our two organizations.”

Johnson Controls Inc. and MSOE have enjoyed a long-standing partnership dating back more than 50 years. Not only has the global technology and industrial leader been a major employer of MSOE graduates, it has also sponsored numerous cutting-edge laboratories on campus, scholarships, senior design projects and been an active Career Fair participant. Alex Molinaroli, chairman, president and CEO of Johnson Controls, serves on MSOE’s Board of Regents, and several other executives serve on MSOE’s Business and Industrial Advisory Committees.

Don Albinger ’82, ’99 is Johnson Controls’ vice president of building automation systems and the relationship manager for MSOE. It’s his job to manage the overall relationship as it pertains to scholarship or sponsorship programs, extracurricular activities like the Wisconsin Regional Science Bowl, and helping to manage the company’s internship program.

Albinger is consistently impressed with the preparedness of MSOE graduates. “They really do stand out with their applications knowledge,” he said. “They are well prepared, well centered and have a great work ethic. MSOE students certainly stand with the best. When it comes to being a functional intern and getting to work, they know how to operate in a lab environment.”

The partnership with MSOE benefits Johnson Controls in a variety of ways. “Working with MSOE helps us from an innovation standpoint. From the different technology used in laboratories to even social media, young engineers work differently today. They’re the workforce of the future. In addition, Johnson Controls is a big believer in, and supporter of, diversity. The more we’re involved with MSOE to advance women and minorities in STEM fields, the better.”

Athletic Hall of Fame MSOE held its Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony in February at the Kern Center.

The Hall of Fame exists to recognize the outstanding performance of athletes, coaches and other major contributors to the athletics program at MSOE.

In addition to two all-conference awards in basketball, she also earned one in her only season of soccer.

RAIDERS’ WRAP-UP Freshmen provide key turnaround for women’s basketball A strong group of freshmen helped the Raider women’s basketball team rebound from a 2-22 record last season to go 13-13 this season. Freshman Holly Denfeld was named NACC Freshman of the Year and earned a place on the All-NACC First Team. She averaged a double-double of 14.5 points and 10.2 rebounds per game for the Raiders. She was joined on the NACC All-Freshman Team by fellow rookie Corrine Sanford.

Depth was a problem for the Red and White last season, but All-NACC Second-Team honoree Megan Kroll returned, alongside senior Shannon Larson and junior Bre’Ana Strong.

Kroll guided the offense in her second season at MSOE, while Larson added another strong season to a standout career. She was named All-NACC Honorable Mention and became the eighth player in team history to surpass 1,000 points. Strong, meanwhile, added depth to a lineup that often went nine-deep this season after having just six healthy players at times in 2012-13.

Players of the year lead Raiders to epic season The MSOE men’s basketball team enjoyed its most successful season in school history, winning a school-record 21 games against just five losses. The Raiders broke the school single-season wins record for the fourth time in 10 seasons under head coach Brian Miller.

MSOE’s success was led by the NACC’s Player of the Year in sophomore Austin Stueck and its Defensive Player of the Year in senior John Cording. Stueck led the team and was third in the conference with 19.1 points per game and made a conference-best 2.7 threepointers per game. He was at his best in the clutch, hitting two buzzer-beaters for the Red and White—from half court Jan. 8 to win at Aurora 78-75 and from just inside half court on an inbounds pass with just 0.4 seconds on the clock to force overtime vs. Edgewood. Cording was the catalyst on both ends of the court for Miller’s Raiders. He led the conference in both assists (4.8 per game) and steals (2.4), while chipping in 10.0 points per game.

The team made its second-ever appearance in the NCAA regional rankings and even earned a national ranking vote in the D3Hoops.com top-25 poll.

Raiders fight their way to Harris Cup playoffs Despite being picked to finish fourth in the new-look NCHA, the season did not go as planned for head coach Mark Ostapina and the MSOE hockey team. Injuries hit the team hard early on, along with one of the toughest schedules in the country. After a road loss to a top-five Norwich team in Vermont, the Raiders got the second half of their season on track and qualified for the Harris Cup Playoffs.

The team will use 2013-14 as a building block for success. All told, 12 newcomers saw ice time, with freshman Austin Campbell earning NCHA All-Freshman Team honors. He posted a 2.04 GAA and .923 save percentage in goal, both the third-best figures in school history. The team also was led in scoring by a freshman for the first time since 2009-10, as Gage Christianson topped the squad with six goals, 14 assists and 20 points.

Kootstra goes to NCAA championships Junior Pete Kootstra represented the MSOE wrestling team at the NCAA Division III Championships, capping a strong first season under new head coach Matt Zwaschka.

Kootstra was one of five Red and White wrestlers to place at the NCAA West Regional. His season came to a close at the championships, dropping a pair of matches at the event held at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Senior Caleb Staub and freshman Austin Bellile also had standout seasons. Staub, the Northern Wrestling Alliance (NWA) champion at 197 pounds, won a team-high 33 matches, placed fifth at the West regional and improved his career totals to 88 wins and 29 falls.

Bellile got his career off to a tremendous start, being named a Scholar All-American by the National Wrestling Coaches’ Association (NWCA) He was also fifth at the regional at 184 pounds, was runner-up at the NWA meet, and posted 31 wins with a team-high 14 falls.

Bellile led the team with a .714 winning percentage and set a freshman record for wins and tied the rookie mark for falls.

Rhodes qualifies for nationals Junior Jerome Rhodes spent much of the indoor track and field season representing MSOE among the nation’s elite in the high jump. Come season’s end, he had his chance to compete as one of the nation’s elite. The junior business management major narrowly missed All-American honors as he placed 10th in the high jump at the 2014 NCAA Division III Championships in March.

Over the course of the regular season, he competed in the event eight times, breaking the school record five times, winning five times and taking second three times. Included in the run was a school and league-record performance in claiming an individual NACC title.

Overall, the men’s team was runner-up at the NACC Championships, while the women placed eighth. In addition to Rhodes’ title, sophomore Joe Buichl won both the 200m and 55m hurdle events and senior Matt Waech won the 400m.

In addition to his championship, Waech was second to Buichl in the 200m, third in the long jump and ran with the runner-up 4x400m relay. His all-around performance earned him Men’s Athlete of the Meet honors.

R emember When...

Professor Emeritus Hans Schroeder P.E. graduated from MSOE with an electrical engineering degree in 1955. He shares some of his memories from his time as an undergraduate, and reflects on how much things have changed.

When I was an MSOE student in 1953, there were no dormitories, no parking garages with soccer fields and there wasn’t even air conditioning. Yes, the tuition was only $150 per quarter, but if it had been much more, I would not have been able to afford it.

Classroom space was so tight we had to start classes at 7 a.m. There were no computers or hand-held calculators. The slide rule was the professional badge of the engineer. By present standards, the lab sessions were downright dangerous: Students wore no protective clothing or glasses in chemistry lab, used the AC power line for AC circuits lab with banks of light bulbs for the variable resistors (don’t hold that 100 W bulb too long when you unscrew it!), used 200 V DC for the vacuum tube circuits and up to 220 V in the motors lab (ties MUST be tucked into the shirt!).

There were no (zero!) female students at MSOE then. Dances were held with different nursing schools around town (which had no males). Quite a large number of engineer/nurse marriages from that time testify to the success of that arrangement. No one would have guessed then that MSOE would eventually have a nursing program of its own.

At that time MSOE had only a minimal amount of accreditation, which may be the reason why some companies were hesitant to hire MSOE graduates. But usually after they tried one, they came back for more. I was the first MSOE graduate to “crack” National Cash Register Co. (now called NCR), and one year later they sent me back to Milwaukee to hire more. By the time I left NCR

about ten years later, the number of alumni in the Dayton, Ohio, region was large enough that then-President Karl Werwath ’36 paid a visit to our alumni chapter. Today, MSOE boasts a 96 percent placement rate and employers still clamor to hire our graduates.

Dr. Robert Spitzer’s era as president saw the addition of the Walter Schroeder Library, the Alumni Partnership Center and the Student Life and Campus Center, formerly the Blatz Brewery Bottling House. When I was a student we used to speculate how long it would be before Blatz would buy out MSOE, sometimes referred to as “the little school behind the brewery”.

Years ago the red brick building on the corner of Broadway and State Street housed Metropolitan Cadillac, not a renowned art collection. Moving from leased space in the old St. John’s High School to the fantastic Kern Center was a decades-long dream come true. The more recent additions of the Kern Center, Grohmann Museum, Rosenberg Hall, Krueger Hall, Humphrey House, Viets Field and the Tower Apartments are tributes to President Hermann Viets’ foresight and the generosity of some very strong supporters of the university. They have breathed fresh life into the institution.

Looking back on my 60-year connection with MSOE, it’s incredible to see how the university has grown in both size and reputation. It makes me wonder—what’s next?

PROFILE IN PLANNED GIVING

Unlocking doors to success Although it’s been awhile since Don Backys ’67, P.E. has set foot in an MSOE classroom, the electrical engineering graduate never lost his connection with, or love of, MSOE. While pursuing a career in communication electronics at Motorola, Backys served on MSOE’s ECET industrial advisory board for more than 20 years and received the Outstanding Alumnus Award in 1982.

He credits his MSOE education for opening doors he never thought possible. “When I went to MSOE I was gathering keys on a key ring, although at the time I didn’t realize it. Those keys opened doors for me that I didn’t even see or realize existed. When I look back over my 40-year career, the projects I worked on, people I met and places I went would have never been possible had I NOT gotten that BSEE degree from MSOE. While managing my own engineering consulting business during the last years of my professional career the final door opened, I was elevated to Fellow in the Radio Club of America.”

In addition to contributing to MSOE’s Annual Fund, Backys had earmarked funds in his will for his wife Ann to set up a scholarship upon his death. “After some discussion we decided to set up an endowed scholarship now, rather than waiting,” said Backys. “Why not set up a scholarship fund now so I can actually meet the students I’m helping?

Scott Weaver [MSOE’s director of planned giving] did a great job talking me through the process, and setting up an endowed scholarship fund was a lot easier than I thought.”

A pinnacle of his lifelong love of amateur radio, Backys was named a Fellow in the Radio Club of America in 2005.

An endowed scholarship serves as the perfect giving vehicle for Backys. Not only does he get to meet the students he’s helping, it’s financially beneficial too. “After meeting with our financial advisor and Scott Weaver, we decided to take the money out of my IRA. That way the money is transferred as a gift to MSOE with no tax impact.”

In addition, Backys can make future contributions to the scholarship if he wants. “With each passing year I can contribute additional funds. A percentage of the interest goes back to the scholarship base so it grows with time while it’s paying out scholarships. By the time I pass, it could become quite a substantial scholarship fund. I am feeling proud to be part of the MSOE family.”

For Backys, starting the endowed scholarship was more than just a financial decision. “Nobody can put a price on the happiness I’m getting today, knowing that some young men and women who really need it will get that money. It’s my way of giving back to the engineering community; something I wanted to do for a long time. Thank you, MSOE, for helping me open so many doors.”

Delivering quality Dominique Vitry ’07 loves her job. As the director of quality assurance for Pizza Hut, she ensures quality and food safety in both the ingredients going into the restaurants, and the final products being served to customers. She also has unlimited access to pizza whenever she wants. “There’s no shortage of pizza here,” she joked.

“I eat pizza every day.” Vitry’s career combines her love of food with her love of math and science, both of which she inherited from her parents. “My dad was a chef in New Orleans where I grew up, and we spent a lot of time together experimenting in the kitchen.” Her mom, meanwhile, has a Ph.D. in education, specializing in mathematics.

After graduating from Louisiana State University with a bachelor’s in nutrition, food and culinary science, Vitry worked for Kraft Foods before moving to Madison, Wis., in 2001 to join the Oscar Mayer brand. While working as an associate principal scientist for the Lunchables team, Vitry decided to pursue a master’s degree. Her manager at the time, MSOE alumnus Brek Minarik ’78, recommended MSOE’s master of science in engineering management program. “He was so passionate about MSOE and really steered me there. If it wasn’t for him I would’ve never looked into it, especially with UW-Madison being so close.

But once I got to know MSOE and the program, it was an easy choice.”

Vitry liked the small scale of MSOE’s graduate program, and the accelerated track allowed her to finish in two years while still working full time. “I enjoyed getting to know my professors and classmates on a personal and professional level, and I still keep in touch with them. They were like my own board of directors, giving me honest feedback to help me grow.”

With just one class left before graduation Vitry moved to Dallas to work for Pizza Hut, but that didn’t stop her from graduating on time.

“My professors worked with me to make sure I had what I needed. Even though I wasn’t physically on campus, I never felt like I wasn’t involved.” To defend their group thesis, Vitry called in from Dallas to join her teammates virtually.

“I was pleasantly surprised by how many MSOE alumni live in this area,” she said. “And I knew I wanted to be more involved. I absolutely enjoyed my time at MSOE, and I think it’s a university that can benefit many types of students. Even though I was a graduate student, I always felt very included there. Alumni can play a big role in bringing in future generations of MSOE students, and I’m living proof of that.”

The Wisconsin alumni chapter held two hockey events in January, one in Appleton and one in Green Bay. Alumni and their families enjoyed catching up at the pre-game socials and watching the MSOE Raiders take on their neighbors to the north.

MSOE alumni and friends gathered for an “epic” tour of Epic Systems in Verona, Wis. This event was part of a bigger MSOE initiative where Alumni Affairs, Career Services and Admissions staff visit specific geographic areas to meet with alumni, employers and prospective students. Guests enjoyed visiting the innovative headquarters, which even included a slide. Who needs stairs?

ALUMNI ON THE MOVE Lisa Bosman ’03 IE, professor in the Material Sciences and Pre-Engineering degree program at College of Menominee Nation (CMN), wrote and submitted a proposal that won $473,423 for work that will be done at the Keshena, Wis., campus. CMN is one of four tribal colleges in the U.S. to be chosen for a grant from NASA’s Minority University Research and Education Project.

Kick off the festivities by participating in Storming the Bastille, the annual 5K run/two-mile walk on Thursday night as part of Bastille Days. Other events throughout the weekend include a Milwaukee Brewers game at Miller Park, a historic Milwaukee River sightseeing cruise, campus tours and much more.
