PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Dear Alumni and Friends, It is my distinct pleasure to present to you the latest issue of Dimensions, my first as president.

This issue provides snapshots of just a few of the many fascinating things happening on our campus – from the use of chocolate to enhance engineering education to 3D printing that aids in the fabrication of prostheses in our Rapid Prototyping Center.

My first four months at MSOE have been extremely busy and exciting. I am continually impressed with MSOE students, faculty, staff and alumni. Their quality and character, as well as their passion for this university, are clearly evident, and I am indeed fortunate to be able to serve as president.

It is no secret that higher education in the U.S. is in a time of considerable transition, with many people questioning the real value of a college degree. These shifts are causing stress and concern in colleges and universities across the country – large and small, public and private.

However, if there is one university that is in a position to ride out these changes and emerge even stronger, it is MSOE. Because, as I have said repeatedly, we are already doing the hard part right – providing quality education in areas of great demand, need and importance. Whether in engineering, business, nursing, communication or mathematics, recruiters know that students who graduate from MSOE are prepared to succeed, regardless of the direction they choose for their future.

One of my goals as president is to help MSOE become one of this country’s recognized elite institutions for higher education. The recently announced rankings by U.S. News & World Report (see back cover) demonstrate our viability in this regard. Like any university, we have some challenges.

However, I know that these challenges can be overcome, especially with the great support that we get from our alumni and friends. So while I am extremely proud of where MSOE is today, I am just as excited about where we can and will be tomorrow.

SPOTLIGHT ON LEADERSHIP

Paul B. Luber “Believe in yourself, follow your gut, take responsible chances and surround yourself with good people.” This same advice MSOE Regent Paul Luber offers MSOE students is what has guided his own career. With more than 30 years of broad manufacturing experience—including ownership, oversight, management and leadership of businesses—Luber has stretched his entrepreneurial wings and soared.

We employ several MSOE graduates and they make a positive difference each day. I very much believe in the university and feel privileged and proud to serve as an MSOE Regent.”

A two-time graduate of the University of WisconsinMadison, Luber holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and an MBA. He began his career as a manufacturing engineer for Marquette Electronics and after several years returned to school for his MBA, focusing on investment and finance. He then spent time in the investment industry and was involved in money management, venture capital and equity research.

“I was raised in Milwaukee and was exposed to business and manufacturing through my father and his work,” said Luber. “One day he called me and said I should really get out of the ‘rat race’ and own my own business. He knew of a small struggling metal working business in Milwaukee that was in need of new ownership and a fresh start. I liked the idea and the timing seemed perfect for me.”

Luber admitted he was lucky to grow up in a very entrepreneurial setting. “I got to see it and get a sense of what it takes to make a business work, and gain confidence by watching others pave their way.”

“When I started out in business on my own it took all the financial resources I had, plus some help from my parents. I will never forget how proud I felt the day I paid them back with interest! Believe me—there were times that I didn’t think it could happen,” he said. “It took a whole lot more effort, time and perseverance than I ever could have imagined, but after a few years I had it growing at a nice pace and it was making real money. More importantly, the pride of being a business owner and the sense of creating value and jobs really excited me.”

Twenty-five years later Luber has started and acquired more than a dozen businesses, enjoys the privilege of serving on several corporate boards and still thrives on the business

process and people he works with. Today, he is chairman of Super Steel LLC; CEO of The Jor-Mac Company Inc.; founding partner of The Accelity Group LLC; and managing member of L4 Holdings LLC. “We employ several MSOE graduates and they make a positive difference each day. I very much believe in the university and feel privileged and proud to serve as an MSOE Regent,” said Luber. “Being an engineer I have always valued the technical and analytical skills that come with it and feel this is an important ingredient in business and the ability to problem solve. My father, Fred Luber, who actively served as an MSOE Regent and benefactor for several decades, exposed me to what an incredible place MSOE is and the talented graduates who emerge from it. MSOE engineers are technically savvy, work-ready, business smart and handson engineers who add value to their employers almost immediately.”

Luber lives in Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin, with his life partner Cathy. He enjoys spending time with family and friends, dining out, traveling, visiting Door County and boating on the Great Lakes. They enjoy their collective five young adult children: Drew, Samantha, Annie, Anna and Ashley along with Thumper, their chocolate Labrador. “There is nothing greater in life than to have and raise kids, watch them grow and develop as young adults, and forge their own paths in the world. I’m incredibly proud of who they are and what they do.”

Welcome Week 2016

New students became acquainted with the MSOE campus, their peers and professors, and the academic and extracurricular activities MSOE offers during Welcome Week. Students took part in a variety of social events and informational sessions throughout the week.

Activities included: outdoor games, a cookout, class picture, video game truck, and a variety of presentations designed to prepare students for academic success. A highlight of the week was meeting Dr. John Y. Walz, MSOE’s new president.

New freshmen tested their trivia knowledge during a Welcome Week kickoff activity in the Kern Center.

ASEE recognizes outstanding teaching Dr. Mathew Schaefer, associate professor, Mechanical Engineering Department, received the American Society for Engineering Education’s 2016 Outstanding Junior Faculty Award in the Manufacturing Division.

He was honored for a paper he wrote about his innovative approach to teaching statistical process control.

National honors for students at PBL competition Six members of MSOE’s Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) chapter competed and placed in the top 10 of their respective competitions at the 2016 PBL National Leadership Conference in Atlanta in June. They were among more than 1,700 students who vied for the opportunity to win more than $92,000 in cash awards. Underwater Robotics Team pilots to fifth in world MSOE’s Underwater Robotics Team took fifth place in the 2016 Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE) International Competition ahead of Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Rose Hulman Institute of Technology and many others. Held at the NASA Johnson Space Center’s Neutral Buoyancy Lab, the event challenged students to design and control a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) that can operate in the deep ocean and outer space. Their robot had to survive simulated transport to Jupiter’s moon Europa and operate in the ocean under its ice sheet to collect data and deploy instrumentation; find and recover equipment, collect samples and analyze data from oil mats in the northern Gulf of Mexico; photograph and collect samples of deep-water corals; and prepare a wellhead for decommission and conversion into an artificial reef. Students with big ideas reap big rewards at festival MSOE students shared their creativity in the first annual Festival of Big Ideas organized by the Humanities, Social Science and Communication Department (HSC) this past spring. Students were invited to present topics that promote intellectual curiosity or provide meaningful entertainment. Abigail Johnson, technical communication major, received first place and a $500 award for her presentation “Every Student Should Be an Artist”; Matheus Faria Inacio, electrical engineering major, received second place and $300 for his piano solo entitled, “Impressions of the Human Learning Process”; and the third place prize of $200 went to Logan Readnour, biomolecular engineering major, for her presentation, “Volunteering: What’s in it for You?” Department Chair Alicia Domack, Ph.D., Drs. Soccer for Success Student-athletes made a positive impact in the community this past spring when members of the MSOE men’s soccer team led a 10-week program for at-risk youth.

Soccer for Success is a partnership between the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Milwaukee, the men’s soccer team and other Milwaukee-based soccer programs. According to junior Peyton Tebon, “Our goals are to give kids exposure to the game of soccer and encourage a healthy lifestyle and constructive behavior.” Once a week Tebon and three of his teammates, Braden Andryk, Joe Oswald and Santi Osso, taught 20 students in third through fifth grades the fundamentals of soccer.

Important FAFSA updates This year, for the first time, students were able to file their FAFSA for the upcoming school year beginning Oct. 1.

(The previous start date was Jan. 1.) Additionally, students and families will be using 2-year-old tax information instead of the previous year’s information. This is beneficial because it allows the vast majority of FAFSA filers to link their tax information directly into their FAFSA using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT), saving time and improving accuracy. As a result of this federal change, MSOE is moving its FAFSA priority filing date to Jan. 1, 2017. Contact the Financial Aid Office at finaid@msoe.edu or (414) 277-7223 with questions.

HIGHLIGHTS

Formula Hybrid Team places second in world MSOE’s Formula Hybrid Team took second place in the world at the Formula Hybrid Competition and first place in the United States. The competition was held in May at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Louden, New Hampshire. Founded and run by Dartmouth College, the competition challenges college and university students to design, build and compete high-performance hybrid and electric vehicles. Building on the Formula SAE program, Formula Hybrid adds an extra level of complexity: fuel efficiency.

Dr. Tim Herman receives honor Dr. Tim Herman, director of the MSOE Center for BioMolecular Modeling (CBM), received the 2016 Science Olympiad Distinguished Service Award in recognition of his work to improve the lives of students and teachers by inspiring them to learn, collaborate and achieve excellence in science education through participation in the Science Olympiad. The organization also noted that his efforts will bear fruit in the lives of the next generation, and that the country and world are a better place because of him. Under Herman’s direction, the CBM developed the Protein Modeling Event for the Science Olympiad’s national tournament.

Dr. Carol Sabel named chair of MSOE School of Nursing Carol Sabel, Ph.D., RN, CNE, is the new chair of the MSOE School of Nursing. She comes to MSOE from Alverno College, where she served as associate dean of the MSN program in the JoAnn McGrath School of Nursing.

She has 30 combined years of experience Dr. Carol Sabel in nursing, education and research. Sabel holds a B.S. in nursing from Marian University and earned her Ph.D. in nursing from UW-Milwaukee, with a focus on education and chronic illness in children. She serves as the grant project manager at the Wisconsin Center for Nursing for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation State Implementation Plan. Sabel is involved in several local and national nursing organizations, including the Southeast Wisconsin Nursing Alliance, Mental Health Nurse Educators Coalition, National League for Nursing, Wisconsin Nurses Association, American Nurses Association, and the Building Bridges to Advance Nursing Research Conference planning committee. She also serves as president of the Delta Gamma At-Large Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International nursing honor society.

Dr. Aruna Lal receives Army Commendation Medal Dr. Aruna Lal, associate professor in the MSOE School of Nursing, has been awarded the Army Commendation Medal. Dr. Lal is a Major in the U.S. Army. The Department of the Army awarded her this medal for exceptional meritorious service while assigned to the Bravo Company, 452nd Combat Support Hospital.

Her professionalism, dedication to being an American soldier, and living the Army values were key to the operational success of the unit. Her attention to detail and unwavering technical knowledge reflect great credit upon herself, the 452nd Combat Support Hospital, 807th Medical Deployment Support Command and the United States Army.

Graduate students present papers in Canada Megan E. Hayes and Jacklyn E. Lesser presented papers based on their M.S. in Structural Engineering degree master’s capstone research projects at the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering Annual Conference in London, Ontario in June. Hayes’ paper was titled “Experimental Evaluation of the Robustness of WT Connections under Quasi-Dynamic Load” and Lesser’s was “Experimental Evaluation of the Robustness of Single Plate Shear Connections under Quasi-Dynamic Load.” Each conducted research alongside Dr. Christopher Raebel, P.E. ’94, associate professor and architectural engineering program director, and Marquette University professor Dr. Christopher Foley, P.E. The research is part of Raebel’s ongoing studies into the robustness of steel-framed structures.

Career Fair 2016 The annual Career Fair was bigger than ever!

For the first time, it spanned two days and more than 1,100 students took advantage of the opportunity to meet with 242 employers about internship and full-time opportunities.

Senior Design 2016

MSOE seniors proudly displayed their hard work and creativity on Senior Project Day in May. Throughout their senior year (and sometimes before that), they collaborated with classmates on a final project related to their degree program. It’s an opportunity for them to take everything they’ve learned in their time at MSOE and put it to use in a real-life application.

This agricultural lighting system allows researchers to test various LED-based lighting profiles to maximize efficiencies and provide sustainable agricultural growth in highly populated cities. Designed by electrical engineering technology majors, it includes a programmable multichannel high-power LED controller that runs multiple LEDs with different spectra and positions.

Electrical engineering majors Abigail Griffin, Aykaz Manucharyan, Michelle Roubik and computer/electrical engineering major Evan Schilling developed a tabletop scaled, low power solid-state Tesla coil suitable for use in a classroom to spark curiosity in young students about electromagnetics.

Nursing majors Angela Chavarin, Kali Faber and Jefrey Mbah developed a plan to improve alarm and call light response times for nurses in a hospital setting.

Maysam Bantan and Aparna Bhaskar were part of a biomedical and software engineering design team that created a high fidelity neonatal manikin for the MSOE School of Nursing to help nursing students hear different types of vital sounds.

Jordan Downing and Kyle Kaja were two of the computer engineering majors who calculated the ideal time and position for the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Aero Design team to accurately airdrop a humanitarian package during the international competition.

Nicolas Matschinegg, electrical engineering major, demonstrated his team’s system that is inserted into a helmet to alert motorcyclists of obstructed blind spots using ultra-sonic rear sensors and LED notifications. The device also connects via Bluetooth to a rider’s phone for basic calling capabilities.

With their machine, Clark Anderson, Sven Kirschtowski, Bilal Nyazi, Devin Runner, Arthur Siebel and Ou Yang took second place at the regional American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) competition.

The goal was to design and build the smallest possible machine that could take three sheets of copier paper and throw them as far as possible.

Biomolecular engineering majors Logan Andryk, Brianna Eales, Shantanu Mishra and Melissa Moyer worked to redesign an artificial aortic valve called the Medtronic CoreValve to eliminate conduction abnormalities caused by pressure the valve exerts on a bundle of signaling fibers (proteins) in the heart.

Navy veteran Stephen G. Myers received an Honorary Doctorate of Engineering degree from MSOE for his contributions to the advancement of the aviation industry and his commitment to educating future generations. He was a Navy pilot, worked at Lockheed-Martin and lectured in mechanical engineering at MSOE for 13 years.

“The world is your oyster,” Myers told MSOE’s 440 graduates during his keynote address. “Performance, judgement and attitude are the kind of elements that you need to succeed.

The future is bright for you; the world is bright for you.”

Where Did You Spend Your Summer?

MSOE students have the opportunity to participate in shortterm trips to learn abroad, in addition to traditional study abroad programs. Some are an extension of what they studied in the classroom and others combine learning and service. No matter the reason or the destination, students are coming away with once-in-a-lifetime experiences that will help shape their futures.

Jamaica

Immediately after completing final exams, University Scholars and William Gonwa, assistant professor, Civil and Architectural Engineering and Construction Management Department, headed to the small Jamaican town of Hagley Gap, located in the southeastern mountainous area. During the school year they designed a solar food dehydrator and they travelled to Jamaica to complete its construction and assembly at a primary school.

With the help of the community’s young students, they built the dehydrator in three days. In addition, MSOE students hosted educational programs to train those who will be operating the dehydrator and inspected a water system requiring repair.

“I hoped to experience a different culture and the trip did not disappoint me. The classroom experience was very different when compared to that in the United States; the rules were sterner and professors were authority figures. French etiquette was learned outside the classroom—just a casual conversation with French students taught so much. The connections I made there will last a lifetime,” said Gowtham Sundar, mechanical engineering major.

Russia

In July, biomedical, computer, electrical, mechanical and software engineering majors traveled to St. Petersburg, Russia with Dr. Olga Imas, associate professor of biomedical engineering, for a two-week study-abroad and cultural program at the Bonch Bruevich St. Petersburg State University of

“Our trip to Jamaica was my second time ever traveling out of the country, and each had been under the auspices of service and humanitarian engineering. The struggles we faced in making the project happen were nothing compared to the intrinsic rewards of what we accomplished as a team of freshmen engineering students,” said Joshua Shefner, civil engineering major.

France

Over the past five years, 23 students have attended Lille Catholic University’s European Summer Program in Lille, France. In June, MIS, mechanical engineering and software engineering majors went to Lille and each earned six credits in

Telecommunications (SPbSUT). Students participated in a series of lectures and hands-on laboratory projects. They visited Yandex, or the “Russian Google,” and participated in excursions to the Hermitage Museum, Petergof Palace and Gardens, St. Isaac’s Cathedral, Catherine Palace and Gardens, and Pushkin’s Lyceum.

“What surprised me was how similar our cultures actually are. You kind of expect a ‘culture shock’ when travelling across the globe, but this was not the case here. RAIDERS’ WRAP-UP

Baseball makes historic run to NACC championship game The MSOE baseball team enjoyed one of the most successful seasons in school history, winning a school-record 24 games on its way to the NACC championship game. The Raiders made their first tournament appearance since joining the NACC and won four games in the double-elimination event to advance to the title showdown.

MSOE’s run secured the program’s first winning season since 1983 and eclipsed the school record of 21 wins. It was also a strong first showing for a team that is looking to revisit its championship era of the Lake Michigan Conference in the 1980s.

There were a number of standout performances for the team, led by senior Tyler Doyle. He batted .362 with 35 RBIs and 32 runs scored. He was named to the All-NACC First Team and to both the ABCA and D3baseball.com AllRegion Third Teams. Sophomore Jimmy Carrington hit .313 with 38 RBIs and 31 runs scored and joined Doyle on the all-league first team. Junior Jacob Roley was named to the All-NACC Second Team as the ace of the pitching staff with a 5-4 record, three complete games and a 3.70 earned run average.

Freshman Emily Snow of the MSOE softball team was named to the All-NACC First Team at third base and was also selected to the NACC All-Freshman Team. She is the first Raider named to the all-conference first team since MSOE joined the NACC in 2008.

Snow started all 32 games, batting .414 with three home runs and 16 RBIs. She walked 13 times against nine strikeouts, posting a .492 on-base percentage and slugging .606. She had a late-season surge, riding a 15-game hitting streak into the last game of the season to raise her batting average 81 points. Her batting average was the highest by a Raider since 2010 when Julie Windish also hit .414.

Lacrosse continues to move forward The MSOE lacrosse team has continued to move forward under head coach Sean Farrell with another strong campaign, winning five games in the spring. The Raiders finished the season at 5-8 with a 1-5 record in league play. In addition to the best defensive campaign in school history, the team also set a school standard for goal differential for a season at +16.

The 2016 season was the third with Farrell at the helm. He boasts 15 wins over those three seasons. The program had just two in the four seasons that preceded his arrival.

Holly Denfeld

Denfeld again named Academic All-American Junior Holly Denfeld was named to the College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-America Third Team for track and field. She became the first Raider to earn Academic All-America honors for two different sports, as she was named to the first team in basketball earlier this year. The award is the third overall for the architectural engineering and construction management major. She boasts a 4.00 cumulative grade point average and was named to the women’s basketball second team as a sophomore.

After a year off from track and field, Denfeld returned for the outdoor season and scored in four events at the NACC Championships. She placed fourth in the 400-meter hurdles and triple jump, was fifth in the 100-meter hurdles and ran with the sixth-place and school-record 4x400-meter relay.

During the basketball season, Denfeld was most notably named the recipient of the Jostens Trophy, an All-America honorable mention honoree and the NACC Player of the Year.

Jerica Kotarak

Kotarak returns to NCAA track and field championships Freshman Jerica Kotarak of the MSOE women’s track and field team qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in both the long jump and triple jump. She had qualified for both events at the national indoor meet as well, earning All-America honors in the triple jump with a seventh-place finish.

She placed 11th with a school record in the triple jump at the outdoor meet with a leap of 37-8 on her first attempt in the triple jump. She had opened her competition with a leap of 18-2 1/2 in the long jump, taking 14th in the event.

Nelson, Knoblauch named head coaches The MSOE Athletic Department made two additions to its head coaching staff in August, announcing the hiring of Katie Nelson as head women’s basketball coach and Kyle Knoblauch as head softball coach. They replace Jessica Ott, who had held both positions before leaving MSOE for another opportunity.

Nelson has spent the last seven seasons at Johns Hopkins University with the Blue Jays, helping the team to six winning seasons in that time and a 123-62 (.665) record. Knoblauch is the founder of B.A.T.S Sports Academy and B.A.T.S Fastpitch in Mequon. In 2015, he founded Team Wisconsin Fastpitch and serves as the U16 head coach. Under his guidance, B.A.T.S. Academy Fastpitch has become one of the top programs in the Midwest, with over 30 student-athletes earning college scholarships in the last four years.

FACULTY FEATURE Dr. Vincent Prantil Once, a student actually turned to Dr. Vincent Prantil and said it out loud: I don’t need you anymore. There’s confusion, frustration–maybe even some impatience–but after some hard work and guidance, eventually it happens.

“It’s a great thing,” said Prantil. “Although students usually don’t come right out and say it like that.”

Prantil, a professor in mechanical engineering, has been helping MSOE students achieve I-don’t-need-you-anymore moments for 16 years. The Brooklyn-born, Cornell University educated Prantil heard about MSOE through a former faculty member. When he was seeking a job in higher education, the university stood out to Prantil because of its focus on teaching.

In 2000, he made an impromptu visit to Milwaukee to tour MSOE. Six months later he was invited to apply for an assistant professor position and he was hired. Although he spent much of his professional life in industry, working 12 years as a research engineer for Sandia National Laboratories in Livermore, California–seven years as a senior researcher, teaching has always been his passion.

“Parker Palmer says vocation at its deepest level is that feeling ‘this is something I can’t not do.’ That is how I feel about teaching,” Prantil said.

Palmer is one name on the eclectic list of pedagogues who inform Prantil’s teaching philosophy, including physicist Richard Feynman and TED Talk contributor Tyler DeWitt, a high school chemistry teacher and Ph.D. student in microbiology at MIT. “People think that for science to be real it has to be serious,” Prantil said. “DeWitt says when you are talking to fresh, young learners you need to tell a story; find something they can relate to. Strip away the complex jargon into its basic elements.”

Prantil fully embraces this approach. He authored a textbook in system dynamics that was inspired by comic

book superheroes and illustrated by one-time The Simpsons animator Tim Decker. Most recently, his commitment to making dynamics education relatable and engaging led to his participation in a National Science Foundation-sponsored collaboration with Northern Illinois University and Rutgers to improve student learning through the use of the video simulation platform, Spumone.

“There is a notion if learning is fun as when delivered through a video game, you are playing to a student’s ‘entertainment needs,’” Prantil said. “But we target student engagement, not entertainment. In pilot studies, Spumone improved learning of engineering dynamic concepts.

The moment a game loses its ties to science and becomes entertainment it’s of little interest to me.”

“The longer I am here, the more I realize I can’t find another university like this.”

Beyond the classroom, Prantil is the program chair of the mechanics division of the American Society for Engineering Education.

Achievements of which he is most proud include his role in the conversion of a carriage house at Cornell University into what is today the Big Red Barn Graduate and Professional Student Center; and the part he played in establishing the protracted leave program for MSOE educators. “When teachers have time dedicated to scholarly pursuits, they come back reenergized,” he said.

When not at MSOE, Prantil enjoys spending time with his wife and children–16-year-old Carmen and 12-year-old Lorin.

He also enjoys swimming and bicycling, and for many years he scuba-dived and played underwater hockey.

“The longer I am here, the more I realize I can’t find another university like this,” Prantil said. “I work with great professors and I have the freedom to choose my intellectual pursuits. At MSOE, I can always promise the students I am here for them.”

W

ith their eyes on the future and a nod toward MSOE’s history, the MSOE Presidential Search Committee sought an industryexperienced professional who also is an academic leader. They found that rare combination in Dr. John Y. Walz, who was appointed fifth president of MSOE and assumed the role on July 1, 2016.

Throughout his career, Walz has had the opportunity to work in industry, at big public schools and also at small private schools. When asked what he’s most proud of professionally, he doesn’t hesitate. “I’m very proud of the students I’ve impacted. In education, your success is measured by your students’ success. That’s why we’re here. I’m very proud of what the graduate and undergraduate students I’ve had the pleasure of working with have accomplished. And I’m proud of the positive impact I’ve had on them.”

Walz is looking forward to making an impact at MSOE. “When I was contacted by a search firm regarding the presidency at MSOE, I did what anybody would do. I went online to learn as much as I could about MSOE and I discovered I really liked it. I liked its mission and was very, very impressed by the great job MSOE is doing educating students in important fields. That resonated with me. MSOE is doing really well already and has the opportunity to become an elite institution. MSOE is the type of university that I wanted to be president of.”

Every step in his career prepared Walz to become president of MSOE. He earned his degree in chemical engineering from Tulane University, about an hour from his hometown of Ponchatoula, Louisiana. After graduation Walz was a process support engineer for Shell Oil Co. at a large plant outside of New Orleans. “My initial plan was to take a summer job and then go back to grad school,” he said. “But I really liked the work and the people. Having a little bit of money was nice too, so I decided to stay.

I was supporting a large plant making chemicals and problem solving and working with the operators.”

During that time, Walz took graduate courses at night at Tulane. It was then that he became interested in the science side of things and the technology. “I wanted to get into research at Shell and figured I needed a Ph.D. So I took a leave of absence to get a Ph.D. in chemical engineering at Carnegie Mellon. My time in industry was good and enjoyable. I have an appreciation for the importance of engineers because Shell was a huge operation and it was run by engineers. After I got my Ph.D., Shell made me an offer to work in their R&D center. But in grad school I picked up the teaching bug so I decided to give teaching a try—and I really enjoyed it.”

Walz taught in the Chemical Engineering Departments at Carnegie Mellon University, Tulane University and Yale University. His first academic leadership role was as chairman of Yale University’s Chemical Engineering Department. From there he went on to Virginia Tech where he was a professor and head of the Department of Chemical Engineering, and most recently he served as a professor and dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Kentucky.

a tremendous addition to the university,” said Dr. Scott Moon, chairman of the MSOE Board of Regents and chairman and CEO of DLSM. Regarding the future of engineering, business and nursing, Walz said, “The boundaries between disciplines are getting thinner and starting to break down. It’s all about multidisciplinary approaches to work and problem solving. For example, we could have engineers working with nursing and business students on developing a new product or device and how to do that in a profitable way.

“MSOE is in a great position to break barriers between disciplines because we’re small and private and we can be nimble. Starting new and interdisciplinary programs is easier to do here than it might be at a large school. We can adjust quickly and take advantage of opportunities that arise. Today’s problems and challenges are becoming so big that it’s hard for one discipline to attack them. We need people with multiple skill sets.”

Q&A with President Walz How would you introduce yourself to folks?

I’m from the Deep South, and still a southerner at heart.

I have a little bit of that laid back air about me. I’m very passionate about education.

What were your initial impressions of MSOE? My wife and I have been very impressed by the faculty, staff, alumni and students. Their quality, character and passion really come through. People are very passionate about MSOE and love it and care for it very deeply. That makes me feel good.

What is the most interesting thing you’ve learned about MSOE since you’ve arrived?

I’ve been reading The History of MSOE: The First 100 Years, and it’s interesting to see how the school has evolved over time. This is also the only place I’ve ever been that there is a wax figure of the founder in the student center. That took me back a little bit at first.

What do you see as your most important functions as president?

• The president has to set a vision for where the university should go, develop a plan for achieving it and work with people on doing that.

• Be an ambassador and represent the institution externally.

• Work with people outside the university to obtain resources for the university.

• Put the right leadership team in place. Even at a relatively small university you’re still big enough that you cannot focus on and take care of every single thing.

How would you describe your leadership style?

I believe in communication. There’s no such thing as too much communication. I like to assemble the right people and empower them, support them and let them do their job. It’s important to have a shared vision and work toward the same goal.

What role does MSOE have in developing entrepreneurism?

Some people are born natural entrepreneurs, and not every single person is meant to be an entrepreneur. But the skills embodied in that—of being a creative problem solver—are valuable to anybody. Having programs that support those types of activities is important for MSOE. It’s a way of teaching those skills to students regardless of where they want to go in their career.

What are you most proud of personally?

My family is my biggest pride. I have a wonderful wife and three great daughters. They’re each doing well in their own way. My wife Moira is an RN whose specialty is neonatal intensive care. She loves babies and we were foster parents for a few years, taking care of children with special needs. We have three daughters: our oldest daughter Megan is a graduate student in engineering at the University of Kentucky. Bridget is majoring in architecture at Virginia Tech and entering her final year. Our youngest daughter Emily is a student at Shorewood High School. We also have a Pomeranian named Coco who is Emily’s pride and joy.

What advice do you have for MSOE students?

Always have a plan for what you want to do and where you want to go, but take advantage of opportunity. I know this is cliché, but you will never get an opportunity like this at a university again. Whether that’s joining a club, getting involved in something, or taking a course outside of your major on something that’s of interest to you—do it. You always want to stay focused on your academics, but at the same time, broaden yourself. MSOE has a lot of things to offer. Take advantage of that.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

I love to read and I’m a bit of a sports fan.

I’m not a real fanatic, but if there’s a good game of basketball or football on I’ll watch it. I like to fish and wish I had more time to do that. I find it’s a very peaceful and relaxing thing to do.

Favorite book: I read everything from history to detective fiction. I like reading about the places where I’m living or visiting. I always have a book, and I still read the old-fashioned way with paper books.

Favorite movie: If they’re on TV, no matter how many times I’ve seen them, I will watch Jaws and O Brother, Where Art Thou. Jaws scared the youknow-what out of me when I first saw it, but I still like that movie. And even though I’ve seen it many times I’ll still laugh when I watch O Brother, Where Art Thou.

Favorite sports team: At the risk of alienating people, I grew up in New Orleans so I’ve been a New Orleans Saints fan since I was a kid. I supported them even when they were the worst team year after year.

We were avid fans and that’s in my blood. I will root for the Packers against anybody, except for the Saints.

Dream vacation spot: A place near the water where I could fish, enjoy some good restaurants and visit historical sights.

What have you brought along with you throughout your career?

I have a hand boiler (pictured at right), which is a demonstration of chemical engineering.

If you touch it on the bottom, all of the liquid on the bottom goes up into the top. It’s a cool little device that I play with sometimes; it relieves stress. A student I worked with at Yale gave it to me. I worked with her a lot, and when she graduated she gave me this as a little thank you gift.

Additive Manufacturing Brittany Ballinger, 28, was born with microtia, a congenital condition where the external ear is underdeveloped. The Appleton-native was 10 years old when she was fitted for her first prosthesis by Milwaukee-based Medical Art Resources – a business that designs and fabricates custom prosthetic devices.

“Our ear prostheses are individually designed to restore aesthetic balance and symmetry to the face, providing support for eye glasses and hearing devices,” said Megan Spindel Thomas, Medical Art Resources certified clinical anaplastologist. “When the ear canal is present, the prosthesis can also improve hearing by directing sound toward the ear opening.”

Ear prostheses have a lifespan of two to three years, and Ballinger’s was due for a replacement. During the course of her life she has had 11 prostheses, but the newest, which was created through a partnership between MSOE and Medical Art Resources, was Ballinger’s first made through the use of additive manufacturing technology at MSOE’s Rapid Prototyping Center.

prohibitive for most companies to have internally. One of these technologies is additive manufacturing, or 3D printing, a process by which digital 3D design data is used to build a component up in layers.

Julie Jordan Brown, founder of Medical Art Resources and certified clinical anaplastologist, approached RPC Project Manager Jordan Weston, ’10, ’15, to discuss whether there was a place for additive manufacturing in her business. “She explained their process to me and I looked for ways we might be able to help,” Weston said.

In Ballinger’s case, the process starts by taking an impression of the intact ear. The mold is then used to create a cast, or a positive reproduction. Anaplastologists use the positive reproduction to hand-sculpt a mirrored wax prototype of the absent ear, a practice that’s both time-intensive and challenging.

“It’s difficult to capture the unique, organic forms of each person’s ear completely accurately,” Brown said. The hand-sculpted wax prototype the anaplastologists create is then use to make a mold and eventually the silicone prosthesis.

Weston saw the paired technology of 3D scanning and 3D printing as a way to improve accuracy and efficiency in this process. “We use the Creaform HandySCAN 3D™ to collect millions of data points off the surface of the object, which is then used to reconstruct an exact digital copy of the physical object,” Weston said. “3D printing allows us to build the complex, organic shape of an ear in a manner that is more cost effective than any other traditional form of fabrication.”

The digital model Pulipati created is sent to the 3D printer and is used to create a physical model.

Jessalynn Smith, a biomedical engineering major and employee of the RPC, uses the ProJet® 660Pro 3D printer to make the prototype.

First, MSOE graduate student and RPC Research Assistant Daniel Pulipati scanned the positive model of Ballinger’s intact ear into CAD computer software and created a mirror image.

He then transferred that data to the 3D Systems ProJet® 660Pro which selectively jets a binding agent into thin layers of a fine plaster powder to create an exact physical model.

“The 3D print guarantees that the details, dimensions and anatomical relationships are perfectly replicated, and it eliminates the four-plus hours long hand-sculpting session we’d traditionally do, ” Brown said. 3D technology also offers the advantage of increased throughput. The time needed to scan and print three models for three different patients is only marginally longer than scanning and printing just one. “We see 3D printing of the model ears as just a launching point for other ways to incorporate that technology into our practice,” Brown said.

To date, the RPC has created 15 prosthetic models for Medical Art Resources.

“It’s exciting to be a part of it,” Weston said. “Being able to utilize 3D printing to improve someone’s quality of life is very rewarding.”

RPC Then and Now The Rapid Prototyping Consortium began in 1991 with five manufacturing companies as partners. Today it has grown to 38 members. The consortium celebrated its 25th anniversary in October.

The first machine was an SLA 250 (ideal for building small, detailed, precision parts) and produced parts using a brittle translucent material. The RPC now has nine additive machines, representing six different additive processes, which are able to leverage a wide variety of materials.

The RPC has expanded to several other industries such as, medical implants, recreational vehicles, footwear, beverage and bottling, and consumer goods.

Initially, the primary work in the RPC was conceptual prototyping and fit testing. Today work includes additive manufacturing applications development, part performance validation, short run and bridge production fulfillment.

Alumna creates ‘Pathway’ to success MSOE alumna Jackie (Woestman) Ackerman ’03 is enjoying career success as an entrepreneur in Southeast Asia. She and her husband Brian are the owners of a professional moving and storage business called Pathway Moving Services, based in Yangon, Myanmar.

“We like to think of ourselves as engineering efficient moves on a daily basis,” she said.

Ackerman knew early on that she wanted to go into business for herself – but she wasn’t sure what type of business until 2011.

“I had an administrative job and when our office decided to relocate, it was my responsibility to get estimates from several moving companies,” she said.

One company’s salesman made an impression as he spoke to Ackerman about the logistical process. “I started researching the company he represented and I was inspired by the founder’s story.”

Ackerman and her husband decided they would have the best chance of success if they started a business in an emerging market. In 2012 they toured several Southeast Asian countries, looking for a void their business could fill. In Myanmar they found the opportunity they’d been searching for.

“It’s apparent that we (like most expatriates) can make a difference here,” she said. “Both our clients and our employees are developing a dependency on us as we are fulfilling a legitimate need.”

“In the two years we’ve been conducting business in this market, we’ve moved offices for American accounting firm PwC (PricewaterhouseCoopers) and German engineering firm SIEMENS,” Ackerman said. “With current expansion into storage and international relocation, and with 15 employees (most pictured below), we are well on our way to achieving our goal of becoming Myanmar’s premier mover.”

Ackerman was the first generation in her family to attend college and she wasn’t sure what to expect from the higher education experience. “MSOE stood out as a student-focused university with high educational standards.”

Her first experience traveling abroad was at MSOE, when she spent her junior year in Germany at the Lübeck University of Applied Sciences. “I experienced a newfound independence, and my eyes were opened to just how vast the world is.” She graduated with dual diplomas as a result.

“An MSOE education gives graduates the tools you need to succeed in any industry,” said Ackerman, who majored in electrical engineering. “I look forward to the day when I can follow in the footsteps of Dr. Eckhart Grohmann and other major donors and make a significant financial contribution to MSOE. It feels right to make a tangible donation to a university that has provided me with such a great foundation to build upon.”

Everyone is nervous before their final exam for speech class, but mechanical engineering major Trent Ristow was a little more nervous than most. He had a ring in his pocket. And his guest, girlfriend Gina Fox, had no idea that he would end the speech, an award presentation honoring her work as a nurse, with a proposal of marriage. Nothing Short of Sweet

Dr. Cynthia Barnicki of Mechanical Engineering, Dr. Anne-Marie Nickel of Physics and Chemistry and Dr. Katherine Wikoff of Humanities, Social Science and Communication teamed up to investigate how the study of chocolate could enhance engineering education and their findings were nothing short of sweet.

From classroom labs to senior projects, chocolate proved a rich source of educational material; so much so that the three co-authored a paper about the subject. The American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) invited them to speak at the annual conference in June.

“Chocolate is a topic that everyone gets excited by,” Wikoff said. “It’s an imagination-sparker.”

The spark was many years in the making for Barnicki, whose family has a tradition of making Christmas fudge. When Barnicki’s father passed away she wanted to continue the tradition and surprise her siblings with fudge. Gift certificates might have been a better option.

“I ruined two batches of fudge in two different ways,” Barnicki said. But all wasn’t lost and she made a connection.

“In courses I teach we look at how phase transformations occur in different materials. This was the exact same thing—a way of looking at nucleation.”

In 2012 she was asked to prepare a Welcome Week presentation. “I researched different candies—caramel, fudge, fondant—then I really started to learn.”

Barnicki found a kindred spirit in Nickel, who started teaching a Food Chemistry course in 2013. “I had a lot of students who grew up watching the Food Network so I wanted to build from that,” Nickel said. “Chocolate is a unique food.

Its molecular structure affects its physical

properties—such as melting point and hardness.”

Nickel and Barnicki expanded the reach of their research in 2015, when they were awarded a $2,500 grant to take what they’d learned out into the community.

They partnered with St. Joan Antida High School, where Nickel is a science coach through her involvement with the American Chemical Society.

Nickel formed a partnership with Milwaukee artisan chocolate-maker Dan Bieser of Tabal Chocolates, who spoke to her Food Chemistry students. Tabal is what’s known as a bean-tobar chocolate manufacturer.

“The chemistry of the beans as well as the chocolate is very complex,” Bieser said. “You are dealing with sugar and fat crystals that are very sensitive to temperature; tempering is what gives chocolate its snap and shine.”

The relationship with Tabal resulted in two senior design projects. One project focused on a cocoa butter press (pictured below), while the other developed a second-generation cracking and winnowing machine, which is currently in use. “I am thrilled with it,” Bieser said. Additional project ideas have been submitted for the 2016-17 school year.

Another curriculumworthy topic that emerged from the chocolate research was the far-reaching economic implication of materials use.

“Ethics and sustainability are issues that are associated with all materials,” said Wikoff. “But because chocolate is so familiar to students it provides a nice starting point for them to look outwards and see that engineering decisions take place within a much larger context.”
