PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

At MSOE, the faculty and staff take great pride in providing an education that offers a lifetime of value for our graduates. Our distinctive mission and character compel us to work together to provide our students with the skills to become “highly productive professionals and leaders,” skills both needed and highly valued in the workplace.

Our success is revealed in a number of ways. PayScale, a salary compensation data provider, not only lists MSOE in its national ranking of “best value colleges in the U.S.,” but in its 2015 report, it lists MSOE as the number one institution in the state in its Wisconsin College ROI (Return On Investment) report. This independent analysis gives credence to the statement that an investment in an MSOE degree provides a lifetime of value.

Another indicator of our success is the number of companies that participated in our Annual Career Fair in search of new hires. Last October, a record 240 companies attended.

This showing demonstrates that a strong demand for our graduates continues. Many of our alumni take this opportunity to return to MSOE as representatives of their companies to help in their company’s recruiting efforts. A good number of our faculty and staff look forward to this event to reconnect with members of the alumni family. This synergy is a sign of our successful university.

Our Career Services Department reports that the placement rate for 2014-15 graduates is 96 percent. Student success is our success and this number further validates the fact that MSOE provides a great value proposition.

The essence of MSOE is very much one where community focus is on student success. At our best, we work together for the benefit of our students as well as the industries, businesses and health care providers in the communities where our graduates are ultimately employed.

While MSOE provides a favorable value proposition to its graduates, it also provides value to employers and communities.

Neal Wunderlich ’74 |

Employee-owned success

In 1982, his entrepreneurial spirit got the best of him and Neal Wunderlich ’74, P.E. founded what is today Wunderlich-Malec Engineering in Minnetonka, Minn. He grew the company to 350 employees who provide advanced engineering, system integration and fabrication solutions for a variety of industries across the globe.

The company has 25 offices in 18 states as well as employees working internationally. Today, most of his focus and effort is in engineering management, customer relations, contract/legal reviews, and of course employees.

For the sixth year in a row, Wunderlich-Malec has made the Top 500 Design Firms in the U.S. list by Engineering News Record. Five out of the last seven years the company has been on the Inc. 5000 list of the Fastest-Growing Private U.S. Companies. The company has also been named as one of the 100 Best Companies to Work For by Minnesota Business Magazine, and its employees voted Wunderlich-Malec as a StarTribune Top Place to Work in Minnesota.

Perhaps one reason the employees think it is a top place to work is that a few years ago Wunderlich-Malec became a 100 percent employee-owned company (ESOP). “After working for other companies, and then starting my own, I have learned that the most important thing is the people. Employees and customers are together my number one priority, and I work hard to make sure they know this.

We have provided our employees with numerous ways to grow and contribute to the company, and reward them accordingly. This is why we became 100 percent employee-owned,” states Wunderlich.

Wunderlich earned his B.S. in electrical engineering from MSOE and a master’s from UW-Milwaukee. He is a registered professional engineer in 34 states. When asked about MSOE, he said, “MSOE has had a great impact on my life. The lab work really prepared me to hit the ground running when I graduated. Many of my instructors became my mentors.”

“Also, I was honored to be recognized as a Distinguished Alumnus and to be selected for the Alumni Wall of Fame, but am especially proud to serve as an MSOE Regent. I am grateful for the opportunity to give back in appreciation for all MSOE has given to me.”

Jan. 22–April 24, 2016 With its rapid expansion in the 1920s, the Chicago North Shore and Milwaukee Railroad set the standard for electric interurban transit in America; no railway could compare to the North Shore Line. The North Shore Line also established itself as a leader in marketing with a highly successful print ad and poster campaign featuring the work of designers Willard Frederic Elmes, Oscar Rabe Hanson and Ervine Metzl, among others. Assembled from the collection of the Milwaukee Public Library and a number of private collections, this exhibition features many of these memorable posters along with photographs, prints and ephemera from the height of the North Shore Line’s success.

HIGHLIGHTS MSOE welcomes new Regents Three alumni business professionals were elected to the Board of Regents at MSOE. Kendall G. Breunig ’79 is principal of Sunset Investors in Franklin, Wis. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Architectural and Building Construction Engineering Technology from MSOE and a Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Marquette University. As a licensed Professional Engineer in Wisconsin, Breunig’s career has focused on real estate development and management. In addition, he is president of Breunig Engineering Inc., managing member of E Z Self Storage LLP, and corporate secretary of Coating Place Inc. Breunig has served as an MSOE Corporation member since 2002.

Bernard A. Cohen, Ph.D. ’71, P.E. is the founder and president of Neurological Monitoring Associates LLC (NMA). He graduated from MSOE with a bachelor’s degree Kendall G. Breunig ’79 in electrical engineering, and obtained his Ph.D. from Marquette University. His career has been devoted to research work involving analysis of electrical activity of the brain and nervous system. Cohen has been a member of the faculty of the Emory University Medical School, Medical College of Wisconsin and MSOE. Cohen has served as an MSOE Corporation member since 2001, was named an Outstanding Alumnus in 1976, and inducted into the Alumni Wall of Fame in 2006. He is a Fellow of both the American Society for Neurophysiological Monitoring and the American Clinical Neurophysiology Society. He is certified in neurological intraoperative monitoring, is a licensed Professional Engineer in Wisconsin and is a prolific writer.

Richard G. Galling ’75 is president and chief operating officer of Hammes Co. in Brookfield, Wis. He is a national expert on the planning and development of hospitals and ambulatory facilities, having personally directed the development of more than 100 facilities. Previously, Galling was the director of development for the Henry S. Reuss Federal Plaza and the corporate Richard G. Galling ’75 headquarters of Northwestern Mutual Life, both in Milwaukee, and served in the same capacity for the University Place mixed-use development in Charlotte, N.C. Galling has served as an MSOE Corporation member since 2013. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Architectural and Building Construction Engineering Technology from MSOE. Five individuals were added as MSOE Corporation members. They include Donald Albinger ’99, vice president, building automation systems, Johnson Controls Inc., Milwaukee; Mechelle King ’04, assistant vice president, digital marketing, Park Bank, Milwaukee; Thor Misko ’06, program director and team leader, entrepreneurial engineering program, Kern Family Foundation, Waukesha, Wis.; Frank Stangl, president, Weimer Bearing and Transmission, Menomonee Falls, Wis.; and Matthew Vandenbush ’97, vice president – software, Brady Corp., Milwaukee.

Another historical first for MSOE In Fall 2015, MSOE welcomed 2,939 students to campus. Of those, 2,607 are full-time students, marking the largest full-time enrollment in MSOE’s history. The student-to-faculty ratio remains low, at 16-1, as does the average undergraduate class size of 21.

Presidential search update – December 2015 The MSOE Presidential Search is steadily moving forward.

Search firm Storbeck Pimentel is providing the MSOE Search Committee with well-qualified candidates who have a high level of interest in the position and in MSOE. In turn, the MSOE Search Committee has been reviewing candidate credentials and conducting teleconference interviews.

B.S. in engineering receives accreditation MSOE’s Bachelor of Science in Engineering has been accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET. ABET accreditation assures that programs meet standards to produce graduates ready to enter critical technical fields that are leading the way in innovation and emerging technologies.

MSOE’s student SAE chapter is the largest in U.S. With 139 members, MSOE’s student chapter of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) is the largest in the United States and third largest in the world. The chapter also took first place and won a $1,500 prize at the SAE Milwaukee professional section’s Student Night. They were judged by SAE professional members on their accomplishments, strategic initiatives, Collegiate Design SeriesTM accomplishments and presentation quality.

MSOE wins two Stemmy awards MSOE received two Stemmys at the 11th annual sySTEMnow Conference on Oct. 27: one for the Carter Academy and a second for the GE Girls at MSOE program. The Carter Academy at MSOE was established in 2013 to deliver an intense academic pre-college program for potentially qualified students who wish to enroll at MSOE, but need further development of their math, science and writing skills. MSOE and GE Healthcare were recognized for the GE Girls at MSOE program. Its purpose is to inspire middle school girls to consider careers in STEM through engaging and challenging hands-on experiences using STEM skills in collaboration with women role models currently working in related industries.

HIGHLIGHTS MSOE business students among best in nation Four students from MSOE placed among the best in the nation during competitions held at the Future Business Leaders of America/Phi Beta Lambda National Leadership Conference (FBLA/ PBL). John Von Helms, double major in mechanical engineering and business management, captured MSOE’s highest award with a third place finish in international business. Ian Hyzy, management information systems major, earned fourth place in computing concepts; with Michael LeRoy, management information systems major, finishing in sixth. Rounding out MSOE’s awards was Forrest Fink, international business major, receiving sixth place in management concepts.

Placement rates remain high Hard work and dedication to their academic pursuits paid off again for the 2014-15 graduating classes— MSOE’s newest alumni enjoyed a 96% placement rate and an average starting salary of $56,991. Employers know that the talent pool shrinks as the second half of the academic year approaches, so they start the recruitment process early. Between Sept. 1 and Nov. 30 this year, 39 employers visited campus for information sessions and on-campus interviews—and that’s in addition to the 240 employers who attended the Career Fair in October (see page 14).

MSOE wins national ASC championship Five teams of students from the Civil and Architectural Engineering and Construction Management Department traveled to the Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) Region 3 Conference and Student Competitions in October.

For each competition, teams received a request for proposal (RFP) for a real project at 7 a.m. and had 16 hours to turn in their proposal. The following morning they presented their solution to a panel of judges. MSOE teams took first in the nation for the health care competition, second place in the regional commercial competition, and third place in the regional design build competition. MSOE also competed in the national competitions for electrical and concrete solutions but did not place.

MSOE helps Team USA win Team USA emerged victorious at the Community Plumbing Challenge in Nashik, India. The challenge showcases the skills of young professionals to improve sanitation systems in developing countries. The bathrooms at School 125 in Nashik were dark, poorly ventilated and mostly non-functional. MSOE students Miya Preston and Jill Vande Boom joined Fox Valley Technical College students on Team USA. They spent six months preparing for their week-long experience in India. Team USA was coached by MSOE assistant professor Douglas Nelson, Judith Torres ’12 and Randy Lorge, FVTC instructor. As the winners, Team USA acted as the project managers during the renovation which was completed by all of the teams.

Engineering competition recognizes PLTW students The 2015 Engineering Design Competition featured 188 students from 21 high schools across Wisconsin, and was sponsored by Project Lead The Way, MSOE and Rockwell Automation for students enrolled in PLTW’s capstone courses. First place went to Catholic Memorial High School in Waukesha, Wis. The project will be reviewed by the Wisconsin Innovation Service Center at UW-Whitewater.

The team designed a safe, easy and simple way to reduce the symptoms of Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS), which affects 140 million Americans, or 70 percent of employed people in the United States.

Students study in Russia This past summer, a group of MSOE students traveled to St. Petersburg, Russia, to participate in a two-week study abroad and cultural program at The Bonch Bruevich St. Petersburg State University of Telecommunications (SPbSUT). They took courses related to computer network design principles, computer music and sound design, and MATLAB programming, taught by SPbSUT faculty and Dr. Olga Imas ’99, MSOE associate professor. They visited the university’s state-of-theart laboratories and media center, as well as the company offices of Students at the Hermitage Museum.

MSOE baseball pitches in to help children with vision loss play ball MSOE’s baseball team, in collaboration with Vision Forward Association, hosted a beeper baseball event for area youth who are blind or visually impaired. The players introduced the children to the fundamentals of baseball and offered several hands-on experiences. The bases and balls beeped, giving the students audible cues to help support them while playing this sport.

EWB builds bridge in Guatemala Members of MSOE’s chapter of EWB constructed a cable-supported footbridge over a riverbed in Guatemala, effectively linking two communities together. Every year during the rainy season, members of the village of Salitre, Guatemala, were barred from traveling over the Rio Arco into the nearby town of Joyabaj. This meant they could not visit the town’s clinics, send their children to school, or take their crops to the regional market. EWB-MSOE stepped in to help.

HIGHLIGHTS Eighth graders engineer fluid power mechanisms For the fifth year in a row, students from Mitchell Middle School in Racine, Wis., were the 2015 Overall Winners in the National Fluid Power Association’s Fluid Power Challenge. Now in its eighth year at MSOE, the competition is designed to get middle school students excited about fluid power. Thirty teams designed and built fluid power mechanisms that pick an object from one platform, rotate and place it on another. In addition to the number of pick-and-place cycles a school’s machine completed, a review of each team’s design approach, teamwork and portfolio was used in the final evaluation. Teams from North Shore Middle School (Hartland, Wis.) were the 2015 Portfolio Award and 2015 Design Award winners. Lake Country School (Hartland, Wis.) received the 2015 Teamwork Award, while Park View Middle School (Milwaukee) was the 2015 Challenge Winner.

Empty Bowls MSOE, WMSE and the Servant-Leadership Department hosted Milwaukee’s annual Empty Bowls event, which uses art to heighten hunger awareness and raise funds for local food pantries and meal programs. Attendees purchase a handmade bowl and taste soups and breads made by local restaurants. This year there were 300 volunteers (150 of which were MSOE students), 33 restaurants, three bakeries and more than 2,000 attendees that raised a record amount of $55,000.

Louis Prima Jr. entertains WMSE listeners WMSE’s second annual “Big Band Grandstand with Dewey Gill” featuring Louis Prima Jr. and the Witnesses took jazz fans on a journey through 1920s New Orleans, 1940s Swing and 1950s Vegas. Louis Prima Jr., known as “The Crown Prince of Swing,” kept the dance floor crowded and the silent auction bidders bidding during the event, which supported WMSE’s 24-hour, 7-day a week, fully curated jazz stream and the digitization of Dewey Gill’s 78 collection. These unique and valuable jazz resources are available for WMSE listeners worldwide via wmse.org. building, for a building dedication ceremony and reception honoring Dr. Hermann Viets, who retired after 24 years as president of MSOE. At the event, Viets announced that MSOE purchased a 1.78 acre parcel of land thanks to the support of very generous MSOE donors including Regent John Mellowes and Linda Mellowes, Regent Bob Kern and Pat Kern, Regent Dawn Tabat, and Regent David Uihlein and Julia Uihlein.

The land, located at 1214 N. Water St., currently is operating as a parking lot. It is directly across from the Grohmann Tower and directly behind the Kern Center, and is bordered by Water St., Juneau Ave., Knapp St., and Market St. There are no immediate plans for the property, which will continue to function as a public parking lot.

Studie Dr. Alicia Domack teaching a general studies course.

Just this past summer, Dr. Alicia Domack, associate professor, was selected to be the chair of the General Studies Department at MSOE. Originally from Omaha, Neb., she received her undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin – Madison and has always had strong family ties to Wisconsin. While attending graduate school at the University of Nebraska, she became intent on teaching. Domack was drawn to MSOE six years ago by the caliber of students, the urban environment, and the exciting opportunities for collaboration here.

In Domack’s new position she is finding those opportunities for collaboration and she is striving to strengthen the role of the General Studies Department at MSOE. “I want to offer the courses that students are excited to take and challenge students to gain new perspectives while expressing their curiosity and creativity in ways that differ from other departments. Based upon student feedback, we are looking to expand courses that have domestic travel or study-abroad opportunities.”

“The General Studies faculty are amazing,” commented Domack. “They have such great ideas on how to make our programs, minors and courses better. I’m learning that I just need to give them appropriate resources and then get out of their way. Stay tuned for exciting developments in General Studies including efforts to increase enrollment in the technical communication program.”

Domack has a background in cognition, learning and development so with her knowledge she shared some surprising insight for current students. “Probably the most important thing students need to do is sleep! Sleep is when your memories are consolidated, so all that studying is worthless if you do not get a good night’s rest. Another thing I often see students doing is highlighting and re-reading their textbooks. That doesn’t help you retain information. By the time we get to college we are all expert readers, so reading becomes very passive.

Currently, Domack resides in Shorewood, Wis., with her husband Brian and their two dogs. She never wants to move! At home she loves to cook. In fact she loves it so much that if she was not a professor she said she would be a chef. The Domacks are also season ticket holders for Badger football and enjoy tailgating with friends and family. She also enjoys traveling. One of her favorite trips has been to France to watch the Tour de France in 2011.

Education and learning have always been important to Robert “Bob” Karl. He said, “The solid foundation that MSOE provided was paramount to the success of my career—but the real key was the ability to solve problems.”

Karl graduated in 1979 with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. After graduation, he began his career at Rockwell Collins in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He spent 12 years in engineering and 20 years in program management and control. “My largest role was leading the development and implementation of an integrated cost and schedule control system that was used on programs from less than $1 million to half a billion dollars in size.”

As his career evolved, he recognized the need to keep reinventing himself to stay current with technology and the latest management trends. He earned an MBA and a master’s degree in computer science from the University of Iowa.

The Fond du Lac, Wis., native was raised in a blue-collar family, and with five siblings, there was very little money available for higher education. Without the financial aid that MSOE provided Karl, he would have been unable to attend the university. Karl and his wife Lynda recently began examining their estate plan and have decided to pay it forward by funding student scholarships. “While we will leave money

Now that Karl has retired, he is looking forward to spending as much time as possible at his cabin on the Cedar River, and resuming the study and collection of antiques. One of his antique interests is his 35-year collection of butter prints which are on display in his cabin. In the 19th century, butter prints were used by farm families as an early form of advertising and branding for their butter. Karl said, “The best butter prints were hand carved by craftsman or the farmers themselves.

At their best they are exquisite examples of folk art.”

When asked what he would say to other alumni who are considering making a financial contribution to MSOE, Karl said, “Giving is a very personal thing. I would not try to persuade someone else. However, I would ask them to consider what they have gained from attending MSOE and what opportunities were offered to them that they could now reciprocate.”

Touching the Lives of Others MSOE students played a key role in helping Kayla’s Playground in Franklin, Wis., come to fruition. Through Servant-Leadership at MSOE, nearly 50 students were involved in the construction of the all-abilities playground dedicated to the memory of Kayla Runte. Kayla was diagnosed with hypotonia and cerebral palsy and by her first birthday she began having seizures. Kayla passed away when she was eight years old. To keep her memory alive, her parents raised money and recruited volunteers to build the playground.

When the Rowdy Raiders create a Red Sea at MSOE sporting events, there’s no mistaking it … #WeArrrRaiders.

Students throughout campus are getting in the game. With 21 Division III varsity sports, a popular intramural sports program, several club sports, a dance team, pep band, cheer/stunt team, and of course, the Red Sea of Rowdy Raiders, there are several ways students are showing their school spirit. The Kern Center and Viets Field have given MSOE a true home-field advantage.

More teams are playing on campus than ever before and students have options when it comes to working out and exercising.

“The north end of campus is an exciting place to be.

Intramural and club sports are a great way for students to relax, have fun and stay in shape,” said Brian Miller, director of athletics. “I also love seeing the stands fill with students cheering on the Raiders. The support from students, fans and the pep band, dance and cheer/stunt teams is electrifying.”

The intramural sports program provides a structured approach to recreation. The types of sports offered vary each quarter, and no practice or travel is required. All games are scheduled on or within campus facilities against campus opponents, and students play weekly for five to seven weeks each quarter.

Club sports are open to students, faculty and staff who are seeking a more informal recreation program. Some of the clubs, such as badminton and tae kwon do, meet solely on campus. Others, like bowling and ultimate Frisbee compete in tournaments throughout the Midwest.

varsity games. Students often wear their red MSOE shirts and transform the bleachers into what’s affectionately known as the Red Sea. Thanks to their school spirit, they’ve been nicknamed the Rowdy Raiders. And with the advent of social media, a new hashtag has been born: #WeArrrRaiders.

The Sound Engineers pep band, the dance team and the cheer/stunt team help get the crowd fired up at many of the Raiders’ home games. Nick Ratkowski, senior mechanical engineering major, is president of the 50-member band. “In high school I was part of the marching band and pep band, and I wanted to continue playing music into college,” he said. “As a former athlete, I knew that when my fellow peers came and cheered me on, it made the whole atmosphere better. I love it when we play together. The sound we can create is amazing.”

Participation in varsity sports varied throughout the years, and by the 1990s it was in full swing. MSOE changed its intercollegiate athletic affiliation from the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) to Division III of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) for most of its varsity team sports. Pep rallies and school spirit events were commonplace and in 1999 the Sound Engineers played for most home hockey and basketball games and the cheerleading squad was rekindled.

About this time, Dan Harris was named director of athletics. Under Harris’ leadership,

21 varsity teams the Athletic Department enjoyed remarkable growth and success, going from 14 to 21 sports, including the addition of men’s volleyball, men’s rowing and men’s lacrosse, as well as men’s and women’s track & field.

Harris retired Sept. 1, 2015 after 20 years of service at MSOE, capping a 53-year career in collegiate athletics.

MSOE teams won 47 conference regular season and tournament

championships during

his tenure, while making seven NCAA Tournament appearances. The Raiders had 25 individual qualifiers for national championships and boasted 19 All-Americans in that time. Success has not been limited to the playing field, as the department has featured 14 CoSIDA Academic All-Americans.

Miller, who also serves as the men’s basketball coach, was named director of athletics on Sept. 1. He spent the last 11 years as associate athletic director in addition to his role as head men’s basketball coach. He is one of the most successful coaches in department history with a .611 (176-112) winning percentage. His teams have broken or tied the program’s record for wins in a season five times, including a record 21 wins in 2013-14.

In 1997, MSOE established its Athletic Hall of Fame, where it recognizes the best of the best among former student-athletes and other longtime athletic program supporters. MSOE’s Athletic Hall of Fame also recognizes outstanding coaches and other supporters of MSOE’s athletic program. In 2015, MSOE inducted nine former student-athletes into the Athletic Hall of Fame (see next page), bringing the total number of inductees to 67.

RAIDERS’ WRAP-UP Soccer makes history with “Championship Saturday” Viets Field hosted the men’s and women’s Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Tournament Championships—and the Raiders won both of those championship games on what was dubbed “Championship Saturday.”

The women’s team went 8-2 in conference play this season and finished in third place—their best-ever conference record and finish. On Championship Saturday, the MSOE women hosted nine-time defending champion Aurora.

Aurora struck first with successive goals, pulling ahead to a 2-0 lead. Sara Travia landed a well-slotted shot and Aly Loepfe converted a penalty kick for the Raiders to tie the game.

Aurora took a two-goal lead again, but the Raiders battled back with a goal by Carly Mitus and another Loepfe penalty kick in the 82nd minute, sending the game to overtime.

In an exciting finish, Travia cut through the Aurora defense to put herself through on goal. Her shot was saved but the ball dropped to an on-rushing Rachael Griffin, who smacked it into the back of the net only 37 seconds into overtime. The win sent MSOE to its first appearance in the NCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament. A week later, they played a tough game against Calvin and lost 3-2.

The men’s team was picked to repeat as league champs in the NACC preseason poll, and they didn’t disappoint. When they took to the field on Championship Saturday to defend their 2014 title in a rematch with Dominican, they jumped to a 2-0 lead with Logan Andryk’s penalty kicks. Dominican made it 2-1, but Braden Andryk Braden Andryk tacked on an insurance goal to make it 3-1 for the Raiders, giving them their second-straight title. They advanced to the NCAA Tournament, but lost 3-1 to Ohio Wesleyan.

Three-time All-American Logan Andryk and his brother Braden Andryk highlighted the team’s offensive effort this season, each tallying 20-plus goals and ranking near the top of the nation in scoring. Logan led the country with 59 points and 3.11 points per game heading into the NCAA Tournament, and was named the 2015 All-American® of the Year for Division III men’s soccer by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

The veteran group on the defensive side of the ball, including Mike Skow, Justin Johnson, Daniel Frey and Mikey Perez on the back line, and midfielder Trevor Cwiok, provided coverage, helping two keepers combine on a 1.16 goals against average and four shutouts. The team was second in the conference in fewest shots on goal allowed.

RAIDERS’ WRAP-UP Logan Andryk named Academic All-American of the Year MSOE senior Logan Andryk has been named 2015 All-American® of the Year for Division III men’s soccer as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The honor comes after being a standout academic athlete for his entire career at the national and district levels. Andryk is MSOE’s third Academic AllAmerican of the Year, following Carol Cayo in 2012 for women’s basketball and Austin Meier in 2011 for men’s basketball. Andryk is majoring in biomolecular engineering and has maintained a 3.80 GPA. On the field, Andryk is a three-time NSCAA All-American honoree and is just one of 19 players in NCAA Division III history to record 40 goals and 40 assists during his career. In 2014, he earned first team All-America honors from both the NSCAA and D3soccer.com.

Wright wins NACC championship Austin Wright became MSOE’s first cross country champion since 2004 when he topped the field at the NACC Championships. He was the only runner under 27 minutes, winning the race by six seconds. He is the Raiders’ fourth men’s champion.

The Raiders fell just short of defending their NACC Team Grace Butkus Championship, taking second with 43 points. For the second season in a row, MSOE placed all five of its scoring runners on the All-NACC Team. Wright was named the NACC Runner of the Year and joined on the all-conference team by Ben Miller, Matt Thomas, Tripp Horbinski and Trey Horbinski.

The MSOE women’s cross country team posted its best finish since 2007 when it placed fifth at the NACC Championships. Freshman Grace Butkus paced the runners, finishing sixth overall with a time of 23:32.7. The Raiders finished with a score of 149, marking the highest finish and the lowest score for the program since taking third with 94 points at the 2007 meet.

Phelps wins WLC Invitational Jacob Phelps won the Wisconsin Lutheran College Fall Invitational. He carded a -2 (70) to win the tournament, becoming the Raiders’ first medalist since the 2012-13 NACC Championships, and the first player to break par in a round since 2013. Phelps finished the tournament at E (144), MSOE’s best score at a 36-hole tournament since the 2010-11 season. The Raiders capped the fall portion of its schedule with the first two rounds of the NACC Championships and head into spring in seventh place.

Leah Hendricks and Hannah Pekarek were honored for their play this season with the MSOE women’s volleyball team. The Raiders won 10-plus matches for the third-straight season, while Hendricks and Pekarek paced the attack. Hendricks was named to the AllNACC Second Team, finishing the season with career-bests of 254 kills, 49 service aces, 220 digs and 69 blocks. She capped her career as fifth in school history with 809 kills and 210 blocks, while hitting .203—MSOE’s second-best hitting percentage ever. Pekarek was named to the NACC All-Freshman Team after finishing second on the team with 264 kills and 295 digs, while adding 26 service aces. She posted seven double-doubles on the season, reaching double-digits in kills 11 times and digs 15 times.

Rowing finishes ninth at Head of the Charles The MSOE rowing team took ninth in a 46-crew field in the College 4 at the 51st Annual Head of the Charles Regatta. The Raiders rowed a time of 17:50.876 in the event to finish just 0.045 seconds back of the University of Massachusetts in eighth place. It was an improvement of one place over last season at the prestigious regatta and clinched an invitation back next year.

Women’s tennis wins five The MSOE women’s tennis team posted its best season since 2011 when it posted a 5-5 conference mark this season and finished seventh in the standings.

The Raiders more than doubled their win total from a year ago and missed out on the conference tournament by just one match.

ave you ever dreamed of owning an aircraft? Mechanical engineering alumnus Mark Hale ’91 has. And today, he is the proud owner of a fighter jet. How, might you ask, do you end up owning your own fighter jet?

“I admit it. I saw Star Wars as a kid and wanted to fly an X-Wing fighter,” said Hale. “When I saw Top Gun a few years later, I was really hooked. I had to fly ... and fly fast.”

Hale brought his passion to MSOE where he was part of the inaugural SAE Aero Design Team for his senior project. He wrote software that integrated team members’ modules together to design MSOE’s first model airplane for the SAE Aero Design competition.

When Hale read in Dimensions about MSOE’s graduate study-abroad program in China, he was intrigued. Dr. Kelly Lawrence Ottman arranges for the students to participate in a servant-leadership project in China. Hale, having more than 15 years of experience within China—professionally, thanks to his role as chief technology officer leading outsourced R&D, and personally, having a Chinese spouse—reached out to Dr. Ottman to join the class in China for their volunteer projects.

After MSOE, Hale went on to earn his master’s degree and doctorate at Georgia Tech. His research in distributed computing was funded by NASA’s High Performance Computing and Communications and military fighter jet programs. This background proved helpful when he moved to Silicon Valley and was on the committees that defined many of

Hale stays on the cutting edge of technology and has become an evangelist for Bitcoin, a consensus network that enables a new payment system with completely digital money that is not tied to any particular institution.

A smart businessman, he is quick to seize opportunity—like when he sold an award-winning startup to Intuit. The proceeds from that sale allowed him to acquire a jet that he flies with Paul Strickland (ret. Col.), a former Air Force Thunderbird. Together,

“I really enjoy giving back when we are so fortunate,” said Hale.

He also showed students the cultural side of China. “I hope the students had a good time sharing some of the local flavor that I learned through the years.”

As a recipient of the Fred F. Loock Outstanding Student Award and the Alumni Association Award for Student Achievement, Hale said, “Unquestionably, MSOE is a huge part of my success. Professors Kern and ‘Babu’ Das Gupta and all the faculty instilled a ‘look at your answers and see if they feel right’ practical knowledge. I’ve used this time and again to gauge if I am making the right decisions and the solutions are right.”

Paul Magno ’79 ME, founder and president of Worldwide Helicopter Solutions LLC, has been named a Worldwide Branding Entrepreneur of the Year in Aviation.

ALUMNI ON THE MOVE Nearly 400 alumni and friends attended the 2015 Summer in the City. The classes of 1990 and 1965 celebrated their Silver and Gold Anniversaries. There were 22 individual events including campus tours, electrical engineering, biomolecular engineering and finance classes; a tour of the MillerCoors brewery; a Milwaukee River and Lake Michigan cruise; receptions and meals.

Alumni from the classes of 1948-2014 were represented as were 20 states, India and Canada.

Michael Peterson ’12 ME, is the first Wisconsinite in more than two decades to earn a first place at the 2015 World Skeet Championships. He won three titles at the event – the doubles, High Overall Champion and High All-Around Champion.

Matthew Pellmann ’07 ME, received a Master of Science in Engineering from MSOE. Nicole (Gregor) Salowitz ’07 BE, received a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin.

Phillip Gocker ’08 AE, has been named a shareholder at Baisch Engineering, Kaukauna, Wis. Kathryn ‘Lucy’ (Myers) Paretti ’09 AE, earned her professional engineering license in Pennsylvania.
