President’s Message This issue of Dimensions takes a good look at how far the MSOE nursing program has come. In that context, it may be of interest to review the sequence of events resulting in nursing at MSOE. I received a call in 1993 asking if MSOE might have an interest in acquiring the Milwaukee County General Hospital School of Nursing (MCGHSN). The first person I consulted was Professor Ray Palmer ’68 (now deceased). It may seem strange to ask the chair of our Electrical Engineering Department about nursing, but the connection was Professor Palmer’s wife, Sharon, a graduate of MCGHSN. Through Sharon we initially learned more about their nursing program and how it might fit into MSOE. We also Dr. Viets and MSOE Regent Kathleen Ruehlow ’72. learned of the many marriages over the years between MSOE engineers and MCGHSN nurses. I suppose the reason is the pragmatic nature of both engineering and nursing students.

For me there were two drivers which made nursing a positive addition to MSOE: 1. While the demand for existing engineering and business programs cycled with the economy, nursing responded to a different drive – demographics – and the future demographics looked very positive.

2. Since nursing had about the same, but inverted, ratio of women to men, a nursing program would make the MSOE campus more attractive to women – both in nursing and engineering.

The reputation of MCGHSN for graduating highly skilled nurses was widely held. However, running the MCGHSN nursing program was very expensive for Milwaukee County and thus it was with the Milwaukee County Board’s approval and support that the program was passed to MSOE. The MSOE Board of Regents enthusiastically endorsed the move and we were on our way.

The MSOE School of Nursing has been a wonderful addition to MSOE. We owe a debt of gratitude to Dr. Rev. Mary Louise Brown for her efforts to grow and accredit the nursing program during her nine years as department chair. Dr. Debra Jenks is now continuing that fine leadership with the help of a transforming gift to establish a new Nursing Complex from nursing alumna and Regent, Kathy Ruehlow ’72.

To all of them and our fine faculty go our thanks for a first-rate program and now almost 300 graduates.

SPOTLIGHT ON LEADERSHIP

Generating success Growing up in rural North Prairie, Wis., Dawn Tabat’s “fondest wish in life was to get as far away from North Prairie as possible,” she joked. On a whim she applied for a secretary position with Generac “just to show my dad I had done something that day.” Forty-one years later Tabat is still living close to North Prairie and working at Generac, but her role as chief operating officer has taken her all over the world. “I’m leaving for Mongolia next week, and in November we’re going to Antarctica. After that I will have traveled every continent.”

Not one to shy away from a challenge, Tabat’s hard work led to tremendous success at Generac. After a brief stint as a secretary for Generac’s industrial engineering department, Tabat started the company’s first human resources department in the early ’70s.

“There were no women in HR at that time,” noted Tabat. “As my HR responsibilities grew, I joined as many associations as I could and networked with individuals from other manufacturers in the area. If I saw a company that I thought was doing good things, I would invite myself in and ask how they did it.”

Tabat became the personnel manager and personnel director before being promoted to vice president of human resources in 1992.

As COO since 2002, Tabat relies on many of the skills she honed while working in the human resources arena. “Any successful company is always about the people—putting together the right teams and bringing in the right skill sets.” This is something Tabat learned from Generac founders and MSOE supporters Drs. Robert and Patricia Kern.

“Their generosity is legendary. It was never about growing the business, but instead being part of the communities and providing opportunities for their neighbors. They had an obligation to support those who contributed to their success, which is part of Generac’s corporate culture today.”

Tabat was elected to MSOE’s Board of Regents in 2013. “I’m a fan of MSOE and I’ve been hiring MSOE graduates for a long time. Generac likes that MSOE students are serious students. When they graduate they are ready to integrate into realworld scenarios. MSOE attracts a higher-quality student and serves them well by providing a relevant education they need to hit the ground running.”

Dawn’s tips for success:

1. You can’t expect success just by showing up. You have to roll up your sleeves and do the work.

2. I tell women, being able to negotiate is very important. If you don’t know what you want, you can’t expect the organization to know it for you.

3. Don’t wait to be plucked out of the masses. Go out and network with people who are impact players.

4. I was always the last to leave the office when I started out.

The people who mattered were still there at the end of the day, and it was a good time to make myself known.

A Working Ranch by Jim Brozek Sept. 6 – Dec. 13, 2013 Milwaukee photographer Jim Brozek presents a striking visual meditation on life and work on an American ranch. Working on a New Mexico ranch in the late 1970s and early ’80s, Brozek captured the essence of ranching life and all of its nuances. The joy, hardship, prosperity and challenges of this working life are glimpsed through images of ranching activities that continue to this day. More than a visual document, this exhibition provides a feeling of what life is like on the Working Ranch.

HIGHLIGHTS New student housing in the works Thanks to an anonymous donor, MSOE is in the process of obtaining the necessary approvals to purchase the building at the southeast corner of Water and Juneau in downtown Milwaukee. MSOE plans to use the building for an apartment-style residence for upperclassmen, graduate students and faculty who wish to live on campus. The 14-story building will include approximately 150 units, ranging from studio apartments to 1- and 2-bedroom units.

The ground floor of the building will remain as retail space, generating tax revenue for the city. The second and third floors of the building will be used for resident parking with 62 spaces.

We Energies executive becomes MSOE Regent Kevin Fletcher, senior vice president of customer operations at We Energies, has been named to the MSOE Board of Regents. Fletcher joined We Energies in 2011 and has overall responsibility for the company’s electric and natural gas distribution systems in Wisconsin and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Prior to joining We Energies, Fletcher served in a number of significant roles during his 34-year career with Southern Company, including leadership positions in operations, customer service, marketing, and sales. Fletcher holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology.

MSOE appoints vice president of finance Dawn Thibedeau, CPA, is MSOE’s new vice president of finance and chief financial officer. She succeeds Armund Janto, who retired after 13 years of service to the university. Thibedeau comes to MSOE with experience in accounting and financial management in non-profit and for-profit organizations, with a 15-year focus on higher education. She most recently served as the VP of finance and CFO at Lutheran Social Services. Prior to that Thibedeau was controller at UW-Milwaukee and executive director of finance at Alverno College. Thibedeau holds a Bachelor of Arts in Accounting from Lakeland College in Sheboygan, Wis., and is a State of Wisconsin Certified Public Accountant. She also is a member of the Wisconsin Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

A key new feature of the site will be a social community called Hub where all students, faculty, staff, alumni, prospective students, parents, high school counselors, and community partners can join and create a profile. An MSOE education makes dollars and sense The world is taking notice of what we’ve said all along: there are high returns on an MSOE education.

AffordableCollegesOnline.org released its Million Dollar ROI rankings for 2013, which honors colleges and universities whose graduates out-earn non-degree holders by at least one million dollars during their careers. MSOE is the only Wisconsin university on this exclusive list, which includes only the top one percent of U.S. colleges. Additionally, in PayScale.com’s 2013 College Education ROI Rankings, MSOE has the 7th best ROI in the Midwest and is 59th best in the country! PayScale. com data also shows that MSOE alumni enjoy the highest average starting salaries and mid-career salaries of any college or university in Wisconsin.

International recognition for industrial engineering students

The tournament was held in Iowa on Lake Sugema. Both are mechanical engineering majors at MSOE. Their win qualified them for the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series National Championship, to be held later this summer.

Adam Van Handel ’13 (right) and Eric Pearson ’13 took third place at the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE) Undergraduate Student Technical Paper Competition.

The pair co-authored a paper entitled Implementation of Quick Response Manufacturing on a Build-to-Order Product Line, based on their senior design project, which focused on the DXN flow meter at Badger Meter Inc. Pearson traveled to the IIE annual conference in Puerto Rico to present their paper. The competition consisted of the first place papers from each of nine regions in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. This is the second award Van Handel has received from IIE. Last year, he won the Presidents Scholarship for $1,000. Dr. Aaron Armstrong is the group’s advisor.

Cyber Defense Team A team of MSOE computing students finished in second place at the Midwest Regional Cyber Defense Competition.

The team included computer engineering, management information systems and software engineering students.

The nine-state competition is sponsored annually by the National Resource Center for Systems Security and Information Assurance with funding from the National Science Foundation. The 16-hour competition focused on the operational aspect of managing and protecting an existing commercial network infrastructure. Dr. Jeffrey Blessing served as the team’s overall advisor. Carol Mannino, associate professor; Mary Jo Suminski, instructor; and Melinda Davies, lecturer, were on-site advisors during the state and regional competition.

GE Girls at MSOE program nurtures curiosity in science In June, 26 girls from Butler Middle School in Waukesha, Wis., spent an energetic week exploring the fun of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) through hands-on projects and interacting with women in STEM careers. GE Healthcare Women’s Network and MSOE sponsored the learning and mentoring program, GE Girls at MSOE. Now in its second year, the program features new applied activities such as learning about electrocardiography monitoring and neonatal technologies, and measuring blood pressure using GE Healthcare equipment in MSOE’s new Ruehlow Nursing Complex.

HIGHLIGHTS Stand-out students This year more than 60 students were nominated for leadership awards, which were presented at the annual President’s Student Leadership Awards Dinner.

MSOE hosts Collegiate Aerial Robotics Exhibition The FIRST Collegiate Robotics Organization at MSOE hosted the 2013 Collegiate Aerial Robotics Exhibition which featured teams from MSOE, Oakland University, University of Wisconsin–Platteville, and Virginia Tech competing in the Collegiate Aerial Robotics (CAR) Challenge. SCOE Robotics is the collegiate robotics team at MSOE, which functions under MSOE’s FIRST Collegiate Robotics Organization (FCRO). Dr. Eric Durant ’98 is the group’s advisor.

Fabulous faculty and staff Dr. Russell Meier (right), professor in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department, received the Oscar Werwath Distinguished Teacher Award and Dana Grennier (left), director of digital marketing in the Enrollment Management Department, received the Johanna Seelhorst Werwath Distinguished Staff Award. These annual awards recognize those who exemplify the values and beliefs of MSOE’s founding family. MSOE places in ASCE competitions MSOE’s student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers took second place overall in the ASCE Great Lakes Regional Conference. As a group, the students took first place with their technical paper and first place in the geotechnical competition. The Concrete Canoe Team finished in third place. The Steel Bridge Team took second place, which qualified them for the ASCE/AISC National Student Steel Bridge Competition for the third year in a row. They traveled to the University of Washington where they competed against teams from across the United States. They won the First Place Award for Display and the Third Place Award for Construction Speed and placed sixth overall in the competition. Dr. Frank Mahuta is the ASCE faculty advisor.

Bridging art and the community The Grohmann Museum was turned into bridgebuilding central in March when 84 people of all ages attended a bridge building workshop with John and Sylvia Peine. Patrons used their creative and problemsolving skills to build a 48-foot-long suspension bridge using K’NEX construction sets. MSOE’s American Society of Civil Engineers student organization also helped. The event was held in tandem with a special exhibition at the museum entitled Bridges: The Spans of North America by David Plowden.

Mechanical engineering students win ASME awards Several mechanical engineering students from MSOE and Lübeck University of Applied Science excelled at the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) District C Student Professional Development Conference. Dr. Mohammad Mahinfalah, MSOE mechanical engineering professor, was the students’ advisor.

Congratulations to those students who received awards: • J ohn Cote ’13 took first place in the competition and also was the best technical winner in the ASME Old Guard Oral Presentation. He won a cash prize and will travel to San Diego to compete at the international level in November.

• All students who attended the conference participated in an impromptu design competition and took first place.

• Bradley Meissner ’13 and Richard Oliphant ’13 took first and second place, respectively, in an ASME poster contest that was held outside of the conference.

Changes coming to electrical engineering technology program Beginning Fall 2013, the Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering Technology (BS-EET) transfer program will change. The first class of AAS-EET to BSEE (Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering) students will enroll and the last class of BS-EET students will be accepted. Starting in Fall 2014, the BS-EET program will be phased out as the remaining BS-EET students complete their degrees. Dr. Josanne Wollenhaupt, professor and program director for nursing, shares her thoughts on teaching, working with children and how the new Ruehlow Nursing Complex has revitalized the School of Nursing.

On becoming a nurse

On what she likes about MSOE

I always knew I wanted to be a nurse, but didn’t pursue it as a career until spending time in the hospital for the birth of two of my children. After that I went back to school to become an LPN. Then I completed my BSN, my MSN and finally my Ph.D. I had to juggle school, work and family.

I like the campus size. I like being able to go to different departments and ask for their advice. I also like that the class sizes and clinical groups are small, so I get to know my students on a personal level.

On working with children I’m drawn to children because, as the nurse, I can do things to comfort them like play with them or rock a baby to sleep.

Knowing that some of what I did made a difference for the kids, that I helped them get healthy so they could go home, was a big motivator.

On what she likes about teaching I like figuring out where students are in terms of understanding a problem or skill, and then helping them improve. I like challenging them to go further, knowing that they will impact a large number of people in their careers.

It has made a world of difference. The technology and academic facilities are incredible. We now have a student lounge that creates a new sense of community amongst the students.

The complex has breathed new life into the School of Nursing.

On advice for nursing graduates I tell graduates to keep themselves open to opportunity.

I never set out to be a professor, but I’ve been teaching for more than 10 years now. Think about what you’re interested in and how you can get there. Networking is a great tool, and so is getting more education. You have the same potential as anyone.

F

or most people, MSOE is not the first university that comes to mind when they think of research centers. But in fact, there are several research projects happening on campus

by MSOE faculty, staff and students that are greatly impacting industry. The Applied Technology Center™ is home to a majority of the research completed at MSOE, and two projects are highlighted below. With several centers of excellence, research is focused on areas such as additive manufacturing, fluid power, clinical and translational science, renewable energy and sustainability.

Paul Michael, a research chemist in the Fluid Power Institute™, recently mentored two MSOE graduate research assistants—Hassan Khalid and Meghan Miller. With funding from the Center

first place award in the student poster competition at the 2013 Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers conference. There were 50 student posters in the competition and at least 40 of them were presented by Ph.D. candidates. Khalid and Miller recently graduated with Master of Science degrees in Engineering. Khalid has accepted a position at Pentair. Miller works for ExxonMobil Research and Engineering in a position she was qualified for due, in part, to a related project she worked on with MSOE’s Fluid Power Institute.

I feel extremely blessed to have met people of high caliber and intelligence in the Fluid Power Institute,” said Khalid. “My experience has given me guidance in choosing my career path and helped me

the patented TetraLattice™ technology with Dr. Robert Crockett, former research faculty member at MSOE. According to Gervasi, TetraLattice will make a difference in many industries, particularly in the area of medical implants, where a tissue in-growth structure enhances replacement parts for patients. Other applications of the technology include: tissue scaffolding, thermal management, impact absorption, accuracy improvement for RP, filtration, and functionally graded materials. In 2008, MSOE issued a license for the TetraLattice technology to DSM-Somos to enhance the company’s product line of photo-curable rapid prototyping resins. Since issuing the license, the TetraLattice inventors and MSOE have been receiving royalty checks, grossing $146,000 to date.

Designed by a group of electrical engineering graduates, this spine board is an early response cooling system that helps medical personnel quickly lower a patient’s core body temperature in an ambulance. The patient rests on the cold board, which helps to induce therapeutic hypothermia.

Biomedical engineering graduate Daniel Brinkman tests out his group’s adaptive optics retinal scanner fixation system, a new automated system designed to increase the reliability of results by guiding patients’ eyes while they are being imaged.

Spring Surrounded by friends, family and MSOE faculty and staff, nearly 400 students joined the ranks of esteemed MSOE alumni on May 25. Honorary degree recipient and keynote speaker Dr. Vince Bertram told graduates, “We need you. Your community and your nation need you. As you begin writing the rest of your story, never forget that you can write whatever you want. But, you can write it only once.” Bertram is president and CEO of Project Lead The Way.

Class respondent Samantha Thorn is the only MSOE graduate to receive a perfect 4.00 G.P.A.—in three years! The business management graduate told her fellow classmates, “Today marks an important milestone in each of our lives. It is a recognition and celebration of our achievements over the past several years. And amazing achievements they are.”

Ruehlow Nursing Complex is a state-of-the-art facility In 1995, MSOE opened its School of Nursing after a merger with the Milwaukee County General Hospital School of Nursing (MCGHSN). Tucked away in a corner on the second floor of MSOE’s Allen-Bradley Hall of Science, the first class of 40 full-time and part-time students began their studies in 7,000 square-feet of space.

By its 15th anniversary, the School of Nursing had outgrown the facility. Enrollment had been increasing every year and the need for a larger space and newer technology was becoming evident. In 2012, a generous donor stepped forward and MSOE began planning for new nursing labs. In Fall 2013, the School of Nursing is expecting an enrollment of more than 200 students.

The Ruehlow Nursing Complex, a $3 million, 25,000 square-foot innovative and experiential learning center, opened in 2013 on the first floor of the Student Life and Campus Center. MSOE Regent Kathleen Ruehlow ’72, an alumna of MCGHSN, was the major supporter of the project. The space is designed to support the teaching and education of professional nurses, and also will be used to promote interdisciplinary education and collaboration.

Simulation Labs Simulation experiences are a critical part of nursing education. Simulations provide students with opportunities to communicate with patients, respond to patient needs, and witness the consequences of their decision-making and clinical reasoning in a hospital-like setting. The Ruehlow Nursing Complex features four simulated hospital rooms that are connected by a central nurses station, similar to a hospital intensive care unit. The rooms feature call lights for the patients, who are high fidelity manikins. The life-like manikins are driven by computer software that enables them to breathe, cough, talk or change conditions based on what faculty have programmed.

A unique feature of the Ruehlow Nursing Complex is the direct linkage of two classrooms with two simulation rooms. Students learn theoretical concepts in class and can immediately turn to the back of the classroom where the opened wall allows them to apply what they have just learned to the care of a patient. Each room also contains biomedical technology and other equipment necessary to care for patients with diverse needs.

The four simulation rooms and their patients are: • Sim Junior Manikin

Students learn to provide nursing care for a pediatric patient in an acute care environment. This patient might have acute or chronic health conditions.

• Laboring Mom Manikin

Students learn to provide nursing care for a woman with maternal health needs. This mother may be in labor or delivering her baby.

• SimMan® Classic Manikin

Students learn to provide nursing care for adults with acute and chronic conditions.

• SimMan® Essential

This patient has an acute illness. The patient can also be transported into the classroom.

General Labs Student learning continues in four additional laboratories, where they engage in active learning strategies in areas such as health assessment, active integration of pharmacology with medication administration, invasive procedures, and advanced patient care with guided supervision.

Home Care Lab The home care lab is set up like a handicap accessible studio apartment. It includes a kitchen area, table and chairs, living room furniture, a large screen TV, washer, dryer, and spacious bathroom with shower. Students learn how to use adaptive devices such as wheelchairs, walkers and assistive devices within the home, and receive a simulation of what their patients experience. The home care lab also has a Mondopad, which is a touch screen TV with Internet and video conferencing functionality. This technology is used to

simulate telehealth, where nurses and other providers interact with patients and families electronically.

Student Area Nestled in the middle of the Ruehlow Nursing Complex, the student area offers the opportunity to engage in collaborative learning as well as an environment in which to socialize and relax. In addition to comfortable furniture, there is a Mondopad, which students can use for group work.

In addition to a traditional Bachelor of Science in Nursing, MSOE will offer a new Accelerated Second Degree B.S. in Nursing program starting this fall. Designed specifically for adult working professionals who have already earned a bachelor’s degree in another discipline, the program offers a compressed, year-round curriculum for those who want to change careers.

The School of Nursing is also active in the MSOE community and beyond. Currently, it is responsible for staffing and operating MSOE’s Health Services. Nurse practitioners are available to MSOE students for diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic illness. Health Services is frequently a firststop for students who may have strep throat, bronchitis, rashes, ear infections, wounds or other conditions. Health Services also offers a selection of immunizations, health screenings and health care management.

The new space also allows the School of Nursing to offer continuing education programs for professional nurses.

Nursing faculty teamed up with MSOE’s Continuing Studies and Outreach Department to develop and offer a course entitled Nursing Care of the Critically Ill and Complex Client.

Staff nurses at Kindred Healthcare, a long-term acute care hospital in the Milwaukee area, were the first to attend. This program aims to develop the clinical reasoning and judgment skills of currently working staff nurses. This 32-hour program blends classroom, online and simulated learning activities, allowing staff nurses the opportunity to apply their learning in online case scenarios, and simulated patient care situations, and also earn 3.2 CEUs.

MSOE’s Health and Wellness Fair is sponsored by Health Services with support from the School of Nursing. In addition, the School of Nursing faculty and students work with St. Joan Antida High School to offer health fairs and educational events for middle and high school students.

Grand opening No unveiling would be complete without a celebration. A special sneak preview event for 100 School of Nursing and MCGHSN alumni and their guests was held in the Ruehlow Nursing Complex. Alumni were impressed with the facility and also how far medicine and nursing education have advanced over the years. Evelyn Nicholson ’48, the oldest living alumna, was a special guest that evening. Missing from the event, but not from everyone’s hearts, was Margaret Bahr. Bahr was a 1938 graduate of MCGHSN who taught courses there from 1944-1957. In 1957 she assumed the role of acting director of nursing education, and in 1963 she became director of nursing education until her retirement in 1977. Bahr passed away in December 2012.

More than 200 students, faculty, staff and members of the community attended the official grand opening of the Ruehlow Nursing Complex on May 6, 2013, which was a great way to kick off National Nurses Week.

Regent Kathleen Ruehlow MSOE Regent Kathleen Ruehlow ’72 is a graduate of the Milwaukee County General Hospital School of Nursing, which merged into MSOE in 1995. Kathy is the widow of MSOE alumnus Gerald Ruehlow ’69. Jerry was president – chief technology officer of Generac Power Systems Inc. and also a Distinguished Alumnus. Regent Ruehlow is president of the Ruehlow Family Foundation. She is a strong supporter of MSOE students through a multiple-student scholarship program established in the Ruehlow family name, and also through her major support of the nursing complex. In her remarks at the grand opening event, Ruehlow said, “Jerry and I had many discussions about philanthropy, and Jerry expressed to me that he wanted to leave a footprint that said, ‘we were here and cared about the people in our community.’ Jerry died in 2004, and the Ruehlow Nursing Complex is just one of the ways that I am continuing to accomplish his wishes, one footprint at a time.”

RAIDERS’ WRAP-UP MSOE rowing reaches milestones The Men’s Lightweight 4+ qualified for the IRA National Championship in California, where they took third in their heat to qualify for the event’s Grand Final.

The finish marks the first time an MSOE crew competed in the IRA National Championship, and the first time one has reached a Grand Final, finishing sixth.

Meanwhile, MSOE Rowing’s Michael Dorus attended the elite USRowing Mendota Developmental Camp this summer in Madison, Wis. Dorus was the first MSOE rower to qualify for such a camp, which selects and prepares teams for the national U23 Trials and the Elite Nationals. USRowing selects, trains and manages the teams that represent the nation in international competition, including the Olympic Games.

In other rowing news, Elizabeth Kelnhofer and Luke Engebretson were announced to the 2013 All-Academic Team in the Eastern College Athletic Conference Intercollegiate Rowing Association. To qualify, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of a 3.35 or better, be at least a sophomore and be a varsity letter winner.

MSOE Athletics welcomes three new head coaches Congratulations to Sean Farrell, new head lacrosse coach, Wayne Schultz, new head men’s and women’s volleyball coach and Matthew Zwaschka, new head wrestling coach. Farrell served as the assistant lacrosse coach for five seasons at Carthage College, and is a U.S. Navy veteran. As a player, Farrell was part of Nassau County Community College’s 2001 National Junior College Athletic Association national championship team.

Schultz is responsible for taking the Westosha (Wis.) Central High School boys’ volleyball program from non-competitive to a state contender from 2006 onward. He has also served as the head coach of Lakes Community High School in Lake Villa, Ill. since 2009, and served as an assistant coach to the Division 4 champion Williams Bay (Wis.) High School team in 2004.

Kroll named Freshman of the Year With the loss of All-American forward Carol Cayo to graduation, the women’s basketball team suffered in its 2012-13 season.

But a bright spot in the form of freshman Megan Kroll helped the team narrowly defeat Marion in a 55-53 win at the Kern Center. In addition, Kroll was named NAC Freshman of the Year.

NAC champions The MSOE Men’s Golf team was named Northern Athletics Conference tournament champion with a team score of 303 in the final round at Stonebridge Country Club in Aurora, Ill. Scott Loftus led the way for the Raiders, winning the individual conference title by recording a 1-under-par 71 final round to finish the event with a 10-over-par 298. Miguel Diaz-Garcia and Jacob Phelps were part of a three-way tie for seventh place with a 29-over-par 317. Loftus was named the NAC’s Roger Fleming Player of the Year and earned a spot on the all-conference team alongside Phelps and DiazGarcia. In addition, head coach Joe Meloy was named NAC Coach of the Year while Victor Aiello earned the conference’s Sportsmanship Award. The team went on to represent the league in the NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championship in Destin, Fla.

NAC becomes NACC In preparation for the 2013-14 academic year the Northern Athletics Conference has unveiled its new logo and name: Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference. The league, which began its first season of competition in the 2006-07 academic year, is comprised of all NCAA Division III member schools from the sharedborder states of Illinois and Wisconsin.

Geary and Main named All-CVC West Seniors Jack Geary and Brian Main have been named to the 2013 AllContinental Volleyball Conference West Division Team. Geary recorded 2.41 and Main 3.43 kills per set, the second-highest and highest marks on the team, respectively. Geary had the best hitting percentage of any Raider in 2013, amassing a .331 mark, while Main led the team with 19 service aces. The pair also succeeded defensively, as Geary led the team in total blocks with 71 while Main’s 1.58 digs per set was second only to libero John Cote and his 2.58.

Profile in Planned Giving Leaving a lasting legacy When he retired from MSOE in 2000 after nearly 27 years of teaching, Dr. Jack Slater, P.E. left quite a legacy. He began his career at MSOE as a professor and the program director of the fluid power engineering technology program, and served as chairman of the Mechanical Engineering Department and chairman of the Faculty Senate and Council. He influenced countless students through his teaching and enthusiasm for fluid power, mechanical engineering and MSOE. But that’s not the only legacy he left after his retirement.

He has named MSOE as a beneficiary in his will, with the endowed gift to be directed towards fluid power applications in the Mechanical Engineering Department. “All of my career’s work has been involved with fluid power, so I wanted the gift to be applied to that area, to update equipment and make advances in the field.”

For Slater, leaving a legacy in the form of a planned gift is an extension of his pride for MSOE. “I should think that people who worked here and went to school here would want the university to succeed and move forward. When I read the placement ratings, I clip them. It’s a matter of pride. What if I worked for some place and after I left, it disappeared? It wouldn’t provide any enjoyment.”

In addition, including MSOE in his will helps to remind him of the many enjoyable years he spent here. “I was surprised when I took up teaching after leaving a career in industry, but when I reflect on that period, those were the best years of my life. I receive enjoyment from the success of my

Summer in the City More than 420 alumni, friends and family attended this year’s Summer in the City alumni reunion. Graduates of the classes of 1963, 1988 and 2003 were honored, along with special guests. Festivities included a rooftop reception, Milwaukee River and Lake Michigan Harbor Cruise, tour of the Harley-Davidson Museum and much more. Save the date for next year: July 10-13.

MSOE Regent Kathleen Ruehlow ’72 was named 2013 Distinguished Alumna of the Year. Ruehlow is a graduate of the Milwaukee County General Hospital School of Nursing (MCGHSN). She, along with her late husband Gerald Ruehlow ’69, is a strong supporter of MSOE and the major supporter of the new Ruehlow Nursing Complex.

Dr. John Carroll ’47 passed away on April 11, 2013 at the age of 92. He retired in 1987 as the senior vice president of finance and treasurer, after 40 years of service to MSOE. He received an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from MSOE in 1988.

Scoring goals on—and off—the field Vickie and Spencer Cook didn’t know each other before coming to MSOE in 2004 as incoming freshmen. And despite being from different parts of the country (Vickie from Greenfield, Wis., and Spencer from Sioux Falls, S.D.), they had a lot in common. Both enjoyed math and science, both knew they wanted to pursue engineering and, of course, both loved soccer and played for MSOE. So it was only inevitable that they would become friends, and eventually start dating.

Fast forward to May 2011, when they held their wedding in Milwaukee. “We had our reception right downtown and took some pictures at Bradford Beach, where we used to get tortured by our coaches,” joked Spencer. Today they are living and working in Phoenix, and credit their MSOE education for much of their success. “MSOE graduates have a very good reputation. Employers see it on your resume and are impressed.

The Career Services Office was really helpful as well,” said Vickie, a biomedical engineering graduate. “As soon as I started working, the things I learned that geared me for the industry really gave me a boost in the workplace,” said architectural engineering graduate Spencer. “My employers saw how much my MSOE education prepared me and I was able to dive in right away,” he said.

In 2008, both Spencer and Vickie were named Senior Scholar Athletes of the Year, one of their favorite memories from their time at MSOE. “Being recognized for both soccer and academics was one of the cool moments of senior year,” said Spencer. “We both really appreciated it.”

Despite the distance, both make the effort to stay connected to their alma mater through alumni chapter events held in their area. “We always come back to campus for the alumni soccer match, but we also attend events in Phoenix, like the Milwaukee Brewers spring training game in March. It means a lot to us to have good connections out here,” said Vickie. 1305 North Broadway Milwaukee Refreshments will be served in the Kern Center immediately following the program. Parking is available in the new complex, enter off Broadway.

In addition, the new field will be broken in on Saturday, Aug. 24 during the annual alumni soccer match. Women play at 1 p.m. and men play at 3:30 p.m., with family activities scheduled between matches.
