Dear Cattlemen, Neighbors & Friends,

It is with great excitement that we welcome you to our 2nd Annual Bull & Female Sale. From our beginnings as dairy farmers, with a small Red Angus herd, we’ve been studying and building over the years to achieve a herd that we are incredibly proud of. We feel the genetics within our herd have a lot to offer the Red Angus breed and we are pleased to display them in our sale offering.

We have built our program around a select group of genetics from some of the most well established and successful programs in the breed, including the Pieper’s in NE, and the C-Bar Ranch in KS. With these base genetics we have gone into a very intensive ET and AI program to mass produce the kind that we like and know will work for our customers. Our main goal in all of this is to build a cow herd of very maternal females that can produce progeny with growth and carcass merit. Our experience milking 1000+ head of dairy cows has made us very aware of the importance of feet, legs, and udders, and has had a very positive effect on how we select and cull for structural soundness.

We were truly humbled by the outcome of our first sale, and we appreciate all the interest you all have shown in our program. Our commitment to this industry and desire to bring you the same quality genetics only in more quantity has been a goal, so we reached out and formed a partnership with Steve & Cynthia Maier, C-Bar Ranch, in Kansas. We have doubled the number of bulls to over 100 head and we are also offering 12 of our best registered heifers again this year. New to the sale this year is a group of 48 head of our best commercial heifers... selected right from the top this is a pretty special set of females!

We know that we could not be here today without a great team of people working with us to make it all happen, and we can’t begin to express our appreciation for all that they do. Austin’s mother, Kim, is still a part of the business and we are excited to have her to help us with the sale. Life is pretty busy on a day-to-day basis with the farm operation and our children’s busy schedules with school, dance and sports. We have Jaylee, 14, Jaedyn, 8, Jamison, 4, and little Jocelyn, who we also call Poppy, just turned 2. We still are mourning and dealing with the loss of Austin’s dad, Mike, who had an eye for the cattle and valued good dispositions, and our son, Jaxson, who loved working with the animals and helping his dad around the farm. They both shared the same love of the land and animals that all good farmers and ranchers do, so we will carry on the work today in memory of them.

Our extended family... we couldn’t get it all done without them.

Jesus Lopez... he started here in 1997 and the feed tractor is a ‘98 model... he has put 47,000 hours on that tractor feeding our cattle!

Mike Duenwald... he is our resident mechanic and when he is not trucking cattle he is our master pit boss on the barbecuer.

Dennis Pederson... our right hand man, he worked for my grandfather, my father and now me. He has been a lifelong friend.

Hilbilly(Wayne Sween)... is our top cow puncher and this ole timer reluctantly runs all of the errands no one else wants to do... unless its a beer run!

Pedro (Pete) Gutierrez... has been here since he was 13-yrs old and is now in his third year of college. He has incredible work ethic and we’re very proud of the man he has become.

the ranch in ‘07 and is our animal husbandry specialist but can still run a tractor too. He is irreplaceable.

Gramps (Gary Foster)... a retired farmer who drives one of our silage trucks all summer and then helps deliver cattle during the winter and spring.

Bridget Weese... our SDSU intern has been with us for 2 years now.

Before we know it the 2024 chopping season will be upon us, and the crew can hardly wait... this statement hasn’t been fact checked yet!

Trenton Brown... our forage specialist who loves to run the 990 Claas Chopper and helps with night calving.

Roger Krein... our neighbor that farms and runs cows and loves the Reds. He and his son, Nathan, help with what ever needs to be done and are invaluable to have so close.

Fertility Guarantee

Every bull will sell with a soundness exam and scrotal measurement. Semen testing will be done at a later (warmer) date.

Health Papers

Every bull comes with complete health testing including a TRICH and BVD test.

Registration Papers

Registration papers will be transferred to the buyer upon completion of settlement.

Retained Interest Bulls

We are retaining 1/3 interest in every bull selling unless otherwise specified. Buyer gets 2/3 interest, full possession and full salvage value. This allows us to reserve the right to collect semen on any bull in the offering at the buyer’s convenience.

Trucking Arrangements

Free trucking in SD and the first 500 miles is free. Also free trucking for purchases of 5 or more head. $100 off per bull if you pick them up sale day.

ProS ..... Profitability and Sustainability is an all-purpose index that predicts average economic differences in all segments in the beef supply chain. This index is a combination of the breeding objectives modeled in the HerdBuilder and GridMaster selection indexes. In this index, replacement heifers are retained from within the herd and all remaining progeny are fed out to slaughter and sold on a quality-based grid. Traits included in this index include calving ease, growth, HPG, STAY, Mature Weight, Dry Matter Intake and carcass traits. The resulting index is expressed in dollars per head born (Index/High Value).

HB ....... HerdBuilder is a maternal selection index that predicts the economic differences of animals for traits that are important from conception through weaning. Expressed as dollars per head born, HB is calculated based on the scenario that bulls are mated to heifers and cows, replacement heifers are retained and all remaining progeny are marketed at weaning. Traits included in the HB index include Calving Ease Direct, Calving Ease Maternal, Weaning Weight, Milk, Mature Weight, Heifer Pregnancy and Stayability (Index/High Value).

GM....... GridMaster is a selection index that predicts the average economic difference of non-replacement calves through the post-weaning phase of production. GM places selection pressure on growth, feedyard performance and carcass traits. Expressed as dollars per head born, GM is calculated based on the scenario that progeny are fed out to slaughter and marketed on a quality-based carcass grid. Traits included in GM include Average Daily Gain, Carcass Weight, Dry Matter Intake, Marbling, Back Fat and Rib Eye Area (Index/High Value).

CED Calving Ease Direct predicts differences in the percent of calves born unassisted out of 2-year-old dams. (Percent/High Value)

BW Birth Weight predicts differences in actual birth weight of progeny. (Pounds/Low Value)

- Shortly after he was born, we had a sense that this boy might be something special, but we wanted him to rise to the top on his own, given the same conditions and opportunity as the rest of the bull calves... and that is exactly what he did! Besides his incredibly wide and stout build, and very attractive Angus features, probably what excites us the most is the fact that we can use him back on just about everything in our herd, and that is what we intend to do.

- Back in December of ‘21 Seth Leachman called Austin and said he found a pretty interesting heifer calf that was selling in an online sale in Canada. Well after hours of sitting on the phone and computer we ended up owning Red Rainbow Taffeta 94J. We rolled the dice and IVF flushed her as a yearling heifer to PIE Commander 0100 and Brown Confidence G1410. Lets just say that sometimes you get lucky and roll a winner... this past December her Commander daughter, Berwald Taffeta 3260, topped the ND Red Select Sale to JD Kirwan and Steve Maier for $57,500.

- Destiny has four full ET brothers selling as Lots 2, 13, 14 and 15, all sired by the rare and deceased outcross EPD giant, Brown CRSB Confidence G1410, also the sire of our top selling bull and female last spring.

- Both Austin and Seth agreed this spring that Outright 221L might just be the best Complete son they had ever laid their eyes on, and that is a pretty bold statement considering the top sons that sold here last spring. One thing is for sure... Outright is the closest thing we have seen to his sire... from his bold sprung rib cage, to his exceptional hind quarter and big top, this stud puts it all together in a neat package, and he has bigtime data to boot.

- When the Lipton’s visited our operation on their honeymoon back in ‘22, we knew we were going to get along handsomely! They went on to purchase the Abigrace 1110J female in the ‘22 ND Red Select Sale and we mentioned that if she had a good bull calf, we would be interested in having him on our sale... well boy did she ever!

- Outright has a pretty cool pedigree too, stacking Complete, Quarterback and Wideload with our foundation C-Bar donor, Abigrace 684D. Her daughters and granddaughters are some of the best females in our program.

- Do you want the good news first or the bad? Well the good news is that Heir Apparent 3103 is one of the top bulls in this event. The bad news... we lost his dam last spring when she got stuck on her side on the pack, and his sire is dead and gone as well. This bull is full of meat and he posted one of the highest IMFs with a 6.58 but because he was raised by a graft dam he didn’t have any contemporaries.

- His dam, Bonne Bel 188J, was a phenom as a calf, weighing in at around 1,000lbs at weaning time! Fortunately we successfully IVF flushed her as a yearling heifer to Commander and got four powerhouse daughters, one of which is a feature in the sale as Lot 114... be sure and check her out!

- When we got started in the registered Red Angus business, one of the first places we went to source genetics from was at Steve & Cynthia Maier’s C-Bar program in KS. - Here is one that is easy on the eyes! Manfred 3616 is a super wide-based attractive bull with a flawless profile and very clean lines. - His dam, Miss Mimi 458B, has been one of the signature donors at C-Bar, compiling over 65 head of progeny to her record. She is a direct daughter of the famed Damar Mimi W085 cow and sired by Anticipation 101W, the Ole’s Oscar son out of the original Abigrace L7730 cow. 458B’s progeny include the C-Bar Windsor 65H female that was named Grand Champion Female at the ‘21 NILE show and is now a top young donor at Sandridge Land & Cattle in OK.

Frank the Tank 2900 is one of most massive, densely made Angus bulls you will find. As a 2-month old calf he was already acting like a herdbull. We feel the DNA doesn’t know enough about his pedigree yet... this bull has loads of power!

- His dam, PIE Tilly 1272, was featured in Pieper’s ‘21 sale as a heifer calf, and we purchased her with Buffalo Creek Red Angus in TX for $77,500. The dam, Bonne Bel 1165J, pictured as a yearling heifer, was always one of our favorites!

- You will search long and hard to find another 16 CED, -4.8 BW bull with the performance and power that Bossman 3042 possesses. This guy looked like a herdbull all summer long and he did not dissapoint us, posting a 732 AWW and 1323 AYW!

- The story on his dam, Bonne Bel 1165J, has a bit of a tragic ending. She was always one of our favorites as a calf and yearling so we selected her to represent the program at the ‘22 ND Red Select Sale. While preparing her for the sale she got a bruise on her neck and had to be dropped from the event. We calved her out this past spring and she had a beautiful Quarterback son(Lot 17), but she then preceded to choke on her cleanings and we lost her. Fortunately we have a pair of ET daughters that are two of our best replacement females this spring.

Awestruck 3071 is pure unadulterated power from his head to his toes... he should be mashing the scales at over 1600 pounds come sale time and he is not even fat! - His dam, Abigrace 1133J, is one of several outcross SAV Territory daughters out of our donor, Abigrace 684D, and boy are they beautiful and productive. The pick of the litter, she was selected for the ‘22 ND Red Select Sale where she sold to Pieper’s and Buffalo Creek for $20,000, and then they re-wrote the rules banning black/red carriers from the event LOL.

- Every time we went to the Crocker Hills this past summer to view the bull calves, this is the one that ultimately always hit us the hardest. Nationwide 3059 has all his parts in all the right places! This meat machine posted an 18.0 REA, one of the biggest in the offering, and he ranks in the top 1% for REA, GM and Pro$ with a -3.3 BW to 130 YW EPD spread.

- We have several full sib SAV Territory x Abigrace 684D daughters in the herd, and everyone of them is a head turner! The quality of udder and teat size that this mating brings to the table is impressive, not to mention their sound structure and strong feet.

- Lot 13 is the black/red gene carrier full brother to Lot 1, as well as Lots 14 and 15. When the DNA data came back it ranked all these brothers a little different, and the genomic data liked this bull the best.

- As a responsible seedstock producer, we are always on the look for new and exciting genetics that we can plug into the system and raise a new crop of bulls and females that offer our customers something unrelated to their herd and hopefully advance the genetics of their cattle. When we purchased the Rainbow Taffeta 94J female, our immediate thought was to IVF flush her to the Confidence G1410 bull and produce calves that were a total outcross to everything we had in the herd. We are realists and know that this doesn’t always work, but in this case it seems to have turned out just fine.

Sale Terms & Conditions

1.BIDDING

The Auctioneer in charge will settle any disputes as to bids, and his decision on such matters shall be final.

2.TERMS

Terms of sale are cash unless satisfactory credit arrangements have been made with Sale Management prior to sale.

3.PURCHASER’S RISK

Each animal becomes the risk of the Buyer as soon as sold, but it shall be the obligation of the Seller to see that animals are fed and cared for free of charge to Buyer, until loaded for shipment or until the expiration of 48 hours after the sale, whichever occurs sooner.

4. HEALTH

All animals are eligible for interstate shipment, except as otherwise announced. Interstate health papers will be furnished for each animal requiring tuberculosis and brucellosis tests in accordance with Federal Regulations.

5.ANNOUNCEMENTS

Any changes from information of any kind in this catalog will be announced from the auction box and such announcements shall take precedence.

6. DEFAULT

In the event the Buyer defaults on payment, the Buyer shall be responsible for all costs, including attorney’s costs, incurred by Sale Management or Seller in connection with collecting, or attempting to collect, payment due.

7. BREEDING GUARANTEE

All animals are guaranteed by the seller as outlined in the Red Angus Association of America Code of Ethical Sale Practices.

8. CONTRACT

The above terms and conditions of sale shall constitute a contract between the buyer and seller of each animal and shall be equally binding upon both. Each sale or resale of an animal constitutes a seperate transaction.

9. LIABILITIES

All persons who attend the sale do so at their own risk. The seller, the sale manager, and the auction facility assume no liability for accidents that may occur. It is to be clearly understood that the sale manager and their representatives act only as a medium between the buyer and seller. THANK YOU!
