Joshua Solomon Dykes 8/4/1972-10/17/2019

Joshua Solomon Dykes (47) went to be with Jesus on October 17, 2019. Josh died while doing what he loved, moving cattle back to his ranch.

Josh was a dedicated disciple of the Lord Jesus, a faithful and loving husband, devoted father, cattle rancher, and owner of 9-Mile Ranch in Walla Walla County.

He was born August 4, 1972 in Mission Viejo, California to Calvin and Sharon Dykes. He was preceded in death by his older brother, Jason. On January 2, 2012 he married the love of his life, Kristin (Brittain) Dykes. Josh was blessed with three beautiful children: Bailey Call (26), Jackson (7), and Shelby (4).

Josh graduated in 1990 from Winlock High School where he was elected Washington State FFA treasurer. He also served on the board of directors for the National Junior American Simmental Association. He attended college at Walla Walla Community College and Washington State University while staying very involved in the cattle industry. In his 20’s, Josh took his skills to the auto industry which eventually gave him the means to transition back to fulfilling his life-long dream of being a cattle rancher.

Those close to Josh knew him to be a decisive leader, purpose-driven (only one gear… fast), creative entrepreneur, avid outdoorsman, loyal friend, trusted mentor, generous steward, and faithful servant. He brought out the best in those who worked alongside him. Nothing excited him more than working with the Lord to help others grow toward all they were created to be. He is simply unforgettable.

Byron and Doris Mabee are founding Red Angus breeders in the Northwest.

Dallas & Pam Thompson have been involved in cattle and agriculture their entire lives, and in the late 80’s they became interested in registered Dallas & Pam Thompson Red Angus. About that time they met a young kid still wet behind the ears named Josh Dykes. He instantly became part of their family and worked with the Thompsons to build a reputable program.

Jump forward to 2015, and that is when Josh purchased Pam & Dallas’ home place, and built his new residence just east of Lowden, WA. Chris and Heidi are new to the Red Angus business, purchasing their first registered animals Chris, Heidi, Kaytlin, Michael back in 2014. Chris is a student of the breed, studying every catalog and magazine that comes & Mackenzie Forbes his way. Their family includes two adult children, Kaytlin and Micheal, who are both in college, but come home to help on the farm during the summer. Upon his return from World War II, George and his wife now of 47 years, DonGeorge & Donna Murdock na, moved to Washington and purchased Ian, Lindsay, Mason & Mack Murdock a farm, sparking his interest in the cattle industry. Now days, George spends most of his time as the Umatilla County Commissioner. His son Ian, wife Lindsay, and two boys, Mason and Mack, run the cows just South of I-84 near Echo, OR. The boys keep them busy year round with sports and county fair projects, and both are active in the Western States Junior Red Angus program. Ian was a close friend and college roommate with Josh back in the WSU days, but you better save some time if you want to here some of those wild stories!

The 6R Ranch is a family operation in central Oregon, and they are a family that is Randy, Ronda & Riley Avery passionate about the Red Angus breed. They started in the Red Angus back in 1998, and have been strong supporters for the breed throughout the Northwest. 9 Mile Ranch – Red Angus Genetics for the Real World

In 2014 Josh Dykes and Seth Leachman joined forces to create their 9 Mile Ranch program in southeastern Washington. They met when Dykes purchased Red Angus cattle 27 years ago at Leachman Cattle Company. When Leachman’s dispersed in 2003, Seth continued to manage some of the Red Angus top production sales, and marketing bulls for Dykes.

“I solicited Seth when I acquired the historic 9 Mile Ranch at Touchet, Washington 5 years ago,” Dykes said. “The ranch is 16,000 deeded acres of native grass that provides winter and spring range. We acquired an additional 38,000 acres for summer grazing on the middle fork of the John Day River and added 3 ranches at Joseph, Oregon.”

The cattle run on western slopes of the Blue Mountains from October until June. They calve and breed on native grass with little or no feed inputs. In early June they are trucked to summer grass higher on those mountains, to graze until mid-October. Cows are wintered at 400-feet elevation and summer as high as 7500 feet. This means mild winters, and good summer grass.

“We run purebred cattle in large range pastures. They sometimes travel 5 miles to water, just like many of the large commercial herds in this area. We’re doing this with purebred registered calves, composites and hybrids. They all go through the same system our commercial cows do,” Dykes said.

The iconic ‘Pink Barn’ property outside of Enterprise, OR is where 9 Mile summers their elite purebred nucleus herd.

The operation runs 800 to 1000 registered Red Angus and Red Angus-Simmental hybrids. The plan is to eventually produce some threebreed composite bulls. These cows are on grass year-round. “We feed very little hay most winters and calve in January/February out on the range,” he said. Cattle work is done horseback.

“We use all the tools of our industry such as genomics, EPDs, DNA testing, performance testing, ultrasound, feed efficiency testing, but the environment dictates what our cattle will be. Parentage of each calf is determined by DNA,” Dykes said.

Leachman says the cattle have to be sound, with good feet and structure, able to rebreed, and have a live calf. “Those factors are most important; EPDs and science don’t always identify these traits. We are with the cattle daily and can identify the superior cattle. We can see what works and what doesn’t,” he said.

Dykes says that when their customers turn their bulls out they hold up nicely because of the way they were raised. “We are commercial cattlemen, purebred breeders, and we feed cattle.” They feed out their own all-natural steers and heifers, and buy calves from their customers.

They feed cattle in Colorado and Kansas, and get all the data back. “This influences our breeding decisions.

We are among very few purebred programs in the U.S. that run this many cows and also feed cattle. We use all the selection tools available—but also put cattle into an environment where we can identify any with bad feet, poor structure, etc. and eliminate them from our program,” Dykes said.

They’ve acquired some of the best bulls in the industry and try to find the best genetics that will work in this environment, and then multiply them via artificial insemination and embryo transfer (ET).

“Anyone can utilize the top AI bulls, so we differentiate ourselves with the cow,” says Leachman. They have acquired elite females, mass producing them through ET work.

“We like the Red Angus-Simmental cross and we like composites.

Our cattle are about 90% red, with a few black bulls available as well,” he said. “The team we’ve assembled (Seth, myself and our families) is great, with help from Brad and Karen Gleason. In Loving Memory... Joe Thomas Helle 5/14/1932 - 10/8/2019

Joe Thomas Helle, age 87, passed away in Dillon October 8, 2019. Joe was born to Harold and Alice Helle in Williston North Dakota, May 14, 1932. He spent his youth enjoying the outdoors and began his destiny in the rangelands of the West while working on the Shipstead Ranch in Scobey, MT. His adventures included chasing wild horses, herding sheep, and visiting Indian camps, where he shared meals not realizing he was eating “puppy-dog” stew. Joe went to High School in Fargo North Dakota, where he excelled in swimming and other activities. He then attended college at North Dakota State University. He would later transfer to the University Of Idaho College Of Forestry where he was the outstanding senior of 1954, the President of the Associated Foresters and was inducted into Xi Sigma Pi. Upon graduation from University of Idaho with a degree in Range Science he began his career with the Forest Service in Montana on the Vigilante Experimental Range, Beaverhead National Forest. He administered the many sheep and cattle allotments.

While based in Jackson, Joe met and married Agnes (Aggie) Rebish. Aggie was Joe’s partner in all his endeavors for 57 years. The couple then transferred to the Big Timber District of the Gallatin Forest as District Ranger. While in Big Timber the couple’s two sons, Tom and John were born. Joe left the agency in 1965 for an opportunity to develop an irrigated farm in Dillon with partners Pete and Elizabeth Rebish. They later expanded the farm to include cattle and sheep.

A baby girl, Karen Ann, was born completing the family.

Joe’s passion was for the sustainability of the range and livestock industries. He can be remembered tending the sheep in the mountains with his children and later his grandchildren at his side. He passed on his great knowledge of the range, instilling in them the importance of land stewardship. The livestock industry will be forever grateful for his commitment and tenure. Probably Joe’s greatest love was for his family and grandchildren.

- Settler 9186 showed up on our radar about three weeks after he was born. We continued to admire him all summer and he came in and posted a 758 AWW and 120 WR! We feel he could be the bull to move on with and carry on the Seneca line. He posted an impressive carcass scan with a 138 IMF ratio and 113 REA ratio.

- His dam, Selma Spur 1521, has yet to miss, earning a 107 MPPA on her three bull calves. In ‘18 her son sold to Delong Ranches in NV, and last year a full brother to Settler sold to Holton Cattle Co. in TX. She brings outcross carcass and feed efficiency genetics into the picture.

We have a fall calving program that consists of AI sired and ET calves born in Late September and early October. These calves winter with their dams on 9 Mile Ranch and then are weaned around June 1st. We develop these bulls to a year of age so we can collect meaningful ultrasound data, and then the bulls are turned out on grass and supplemented with grass hay through the winter. In February the bulls are brought back to the yard where we can fertility test and shine them up for the sale.

SALE TERMS & CONDITIONS

1.BIDDING The Auctioneer in charge will settle any disputes as to bids, and his decision on such matters shall be final.

2.TERMS Terms of sale are cash unless satisfactory credit arrangements have been made with Sale Management prior to sale.

3.PURCHASER’S RISK Each animal becomes the risk of the Buyer as soon as sold, but it shall be the obligation of the Seller to see that animals are fed and cared for free of charge to Buyer, until loaded for shipment or until the expiration of 48 hours after the sale, whichever occurs sooner.

4. HEALTH All animals are eligible for interstate shipment, except as otherwise announced. Interstate health papers will be furnished for each animal requiring tuberculosis and brucellosis tests in accordance with Federal Regulations.

5.ANNOUNCEMENTS Any changes from information of any kind in this catalog will be announced from the auction box and such announcements shall take precedence.

6. DEFAULT In the event the Buyer defaults on payment, the Buyer shall be responsible for all costs, including attorney’s costs, incurred by Sale Management or Seller in connection with collecting, or attempting to collect, payment due.

7. BREEDING GUARANTEE All animals are guaranteed by the seller as outlined in the Red Angus Association of America Code of Ethical Sale Practices.

8. CONTRACT The above terms and conditions of sale shall constitute a contract between the buyer and seller of each animal and shall be equally binding upon both. Each sale or resale of an animal constitutes a separate transaction.

9. LIABILITIES All persons who attend the sale do so at their own risk. The seller, the sale manager, and the auction facility assume no liability for accidents that may occur. It is to be clearly understood that the sale manager and their representatives act only as a medium between the buyer and seller.
