Manhattan School of Music founder Janet Daniels Schenck began offering music lessons to immigrant children at East Harlem’s Union Settlement House over a century ago. In 1918, she mobilized patrons, music teachers, and artistic advisors to establish what was to grow into an internationally renowned music conservatory. In the 100 years since, countless alumni, community members, and music lovers have benefited from her legacy.
