Welcome from the Dean Dear New Law Students, Welcome to Murdoch Law School!

As Dean of a Law School, it is one of the most pleasant tasks to welcome a new cohort of students. You have embarked on a new adventure of learning and for many of you, it will be the first time at University. The first steps into such a big and new environment can be quite overwhelming. It is easy to feel lost and confused. But do not worry! You are not the first new cohort. In fact, we just celebrated the 20th anniversary of the first graduating class of 1993.

You have joined a group of very experienced and dedicated people here at the Law School who will help you in the transition and throughout your degree. One very important pillar of our academic community are, of course, our students and the MSLS as their institutional arm. I try to work as closely as possible with our MSLS because only together can we make this a better Law School.

I would urge you to get involved with your MSLS as quickly as possible and seek their help whenever you need it. Your fellow students are the best ambassadors for our Law School and your fellow students speak your language and know about your problems and anxieties better than anybody else. They have all been where you are now! Of course always feel free to contact your First-Year Advisor or any of our staff members for advice as well. It is always good to hear both sides and for us as lawyers it is even more paramount to hear both sides of an issue!

Studying law is fascinating because the law is an integral part of all aspects of life.

But it is not easy and it will require a lot of input and work from you. There is no way around it and beware of shortcuts. Hard work and dedication make good lawyers, nothing else. But rest assured there is more to studying law at Murdoch than just hard work. You are the master of your study experience here at our Law School.

The more you contribute the better that experience will be for you. A great point to start is to be engaged with the MSLS so do not hesitate and get involved right away. I wish you all the best for your studies here at Murdoch. Make it the best 4 or 5 years of your life!

President's Note On behalf of the Murdoch Student Law Society, I would like to send you all a very warm welcome to Murdoch School of Law. Each of you are entering what is hopefully going to be the best years of your lives.

Law School is many different things, but easy is not one of them. Whether you’re studying Law, Criminology, Business Law or a mixture of the three, I can tell you from experience that it is going to be challenging.

But with the support of a very dedicated group of students (MSLS Committee), the Law School staff and the friends you are going to make, I promise that you will love and learn from every experience you have coming your way!

I have 2 pieces of advice that I think every student should know. Its something that you have undoubtedly heard before, but you won’t believe it unless you try it.

1. Set small goals and stay motivated.

There’s nothing harder than sitting at your desk at 3am, slouching over a computer, clutching a red bull whilst desperately trying to read through a journal article for a paper that is due at 9 am the next morning. So don’t be that person. The key to success is setting achievable goals and staying motivated to reach them. Set out a study schedule, eat healthily and exercise every opportunity you get. It will save you come assignment/exam period!

2. Get Involved.

You are lucky enough to have been accepted into a university which thrives on opportunity. All the resources that you need to have the best time at uni and to stand out from the crowd surround you every single day. All you have to do is reach out and grab it.

My committee and I work tirelessly throughout the year to open every door that we can for you. From social events where you get to meet new friends (and have a few drinks while you’re at it) to Careers and Educational events where you get to meet potential future employers.

We are here for you. Why not try one of our 1st year only competitions where you can start developing your practical skills early? Or come down to the Law Café to make friends or just to have a $2 coffee?

You can admire our meme board behind the café counter or come say hello to the committee if you’re seeking advice (or good banter). We have all been there and we probably have a few tricks to help you succeed!

Anyway, that’s enough from me for now. I look forward to meeting you all over the coming months.

2018 Committee Wilson the Penguin MSLS MASCOT See! There's a reason there are penguins on the front cover. We're not crazy. Wilson is the beloved MSLS mascot and holds the record for the longest standing MSLS member. He can be found at the Law Cafe chilling on the blackboard.

Carmen Grobbelaar 2018 PRESIDENT Carmen is in her fourth year of a double degree in Law and Criminology. She has been on the MSLS Committee since 2015, holding both the Socials Vice President and Competitions Vice President roles. MSLS has been a major part of Carmen's study, it has allowed her to increase her social and professional skills which she hopes to translate into her Presidency in 2018.

When she is not running around stressing about the committee, you will find Carmen socialising in the Cafe or Tavern or hiding on a beach somewhere in Joondalup.

Gemma Szumilak SECRETARY Graduating at the end of 2018, Gemma hopes to leave MSLS in a positive and strong position.

Her hobbies include saying that she should ‘really get back into some kind of exercise’, vacuuming dog fur off everything and telling people she’s ‘not actually a lawyer yet’. Gemma understands what it’s like being new or shy and wants to assure everyone that MSLS is a fantastic society to get involved in and a great way to make friends. Please speak to her if you see her around.

Publications & Marketing Daniel Baker PUBLICATIONS VICE PRESIDENT Daniel moved to Murdoch after completing his Bachelor of Commerce Degree at UWA, majoring in marketing and business law. Daniel has been actively involved with MSLS since the outset of his degree, through competing in a myriad of competitions or via his attendance at one of the many social events of the MSLS calendar. If he’s not planning his next escapade abroad he’s more than likely just returned from the last adventure.

Daniel is as likely to be in the lecture room scribbling down notes, as he is at the tavern drinking a pint or two.

Katie Brakespare MARKETING OFFICER Katie is completing her third year of LLB. She became involved with the Committee through attending various social and educational events.

In 2018, she would like to help the Committee promote exciting events like the Law Ball so that the students can see that there is so much more to law school than just attending lectures and tutorials.

Matt Grice PUBLICATIONS OFFICER Matt is in his 2nd year of a double degree in Law and Sustainable Development. Outside of uni Matt plays basketball badly, piano very badly and soccer in a manner that doesn’t attract too much mocking. As clearly evident from his physique, Matt enjoys anything beach related. Matt is always keen to talk however it must be noted replies sent on nights the Wallabies are playing will likely be short, delayed and laden with emotive language.

Education & Careers Marché Bantum EDUCATIONS VICE PRESIDENT Marché Bantum is in his 6th and final year in a double degree of LLB/BA (Asian Studies). Marché has a wealth of experience pertaining to education and careers. This year, Marché’s focus as the Education & Careers Vice President will be on expanding the employment landscape for law students and introducing them to career pathways to innovative industries, Government and NGOs’. Likewise, Marché will focus on proliferating education and careers events within the traditional law-firm pathway.

Karla Fernandes EDUCATIONS OFFICER Karla is in her second year of Law and Security, Terrorism and Counter-Terrorism. In her free time Karla is a musician who enjoys teaching, critiquing and understanding a wide range of musical genres. She’s an animal lover (with the exception of snakes) and a total extrovert who can strike up a conversation with a brick wall. If you see her around, don’t hesitate to say hi!

Louise Dinne CAREERS OFFICER Louise is currently in the penultimate year of her law degree and is the current careers officer for MSLS, she is the mother of a gorgeous young puppy and has been a strong competitor within MSLS and in international competitions even representing Murdoch in the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition.

Competitions Calum Moultrie COMPETITIONS VICE PRESIDENT Calum is a third year Law and Finance student studying at Murdoch. Calum is looking to inject his enthusiasm for advocacy and practical legal skills into the competitions portfolio. Having used these skills during a successful run in the Kirby Contract Moot in 2017, Calum hopes that a successful competitions portfolio in 2018 will enable other students to similarly develop essential skills for their future endeavours. In his spare time, Calum is an avid soccer fan, both refereeing and playing the game.

Daniel Morey COMPETITIONS OFFICER Dan is in his second year of a Bachelor of Law/Bachelor of Arts (Global Politics & Policy) double degree. He is a music tragic, coffee addict, West Coast Eagles, Cricket Australia and Chicago Bears fan. In his spare time, he can probably be found in a cafe somewhere in Perth muttering to himself about music or the current state of Australian politics, or redeeming his fifth or sixth loyalty card at Lord of the Fries. Dan likes to pretend he has time to kill, so feel free to hit him up if you have any questions!

Owen Wright COMPETITIONS OFFICER Owen is in his second year of a Law/Arts combined degree (Global Politics and Policy).

After overcommitting to competitions in first year, Owen thought it might be a good idea to run for Competitions Officer to prevent him from doing it again. He thinks it’s a great way to make friends and procrastinate with assignments. You can find him around most days either napping in the Law Library, napping in the Law Café, or napping while in line to buy chips from the Lunchbox Café.

Socials Dan Bone SOCIALS VICE PRESIDENT Daniel is currently in his fourth year of a Law and Finance degree at Murdoch, and is the current Socials and Sporting Vice President for the 2018 MSLS Committee. This is Daniel’s second position on the MSLS Committee, having previously run the Competitions portfolio in 2016. Daniel likes to spend his spare time going out with friends, relaxing, or doing not a whole lot in the Law Café, so feel free to say hi if you are around, or flick him an email if you have any questions about the Social and Sporting events, or about MSLS or Murdoch in general.

Cody Stevenson SOCIALS OFFICER Cody Stevenson is the 2018 Socials Officer. He was one of two first-year Representatives in 2017 and is excited to continue his involvement with MSLS throughout his time at university. Cody believes that social events are an important part of a balanced student life and a great way for new students to bond and become involved with the society. He can't wait to get started and would be happy to have a chat and say hello if you see him at the law cafe.

Timothy Wrathall SPORTING OFFICER Tim is currently in the second year of his LLB. After attending many MSLS events in his first year, Tim decided to give it a shot himself. He spent a gap year in Germany and is fluent (kinda) in German. He enjoys watching footy and cricket and spending more time than he actually has watching TV. You can usually find him hanging out at either the law cafe or the tavern, desperately trying to avoid his assignments. Feel free to come over and ask him any questions, that way he’ll have an excuse to not be doing his work!

2018 Committee Angela Khemlani TREASURER Angela is studying a double degree in law and accounting at Murdoch University. She is currently the Treasurer at Murdoch Student Law Society ensuring that the members are getting maximum benefit for the money they spend.

An avid foodie, Angela enjoys seeking out new and interesting vegetarian dishes in restaurants.

In her free time, Angela also enjoys reading the latest law/business articles and engaging in social activities.

Rebecca Kale FINANCE OFFICER Rebecca is in her second year of law at Murdoch studying a double degree in Law and Economics. Rebecca is a serial over-committer and can’t wait to tackle everything the committee has to offer. She loves a good book, is not a huge fan of summer, despises sand and adores a good pair of shoes. Unlike many other Law students, Rebecca only barely tolerates coffee but loves a good cuppa tea, come find her at the law cafe!

Nicola Greenshields CAFE MANAGER Nicola is in her third year of a Law and Criminology double degree, and this is her second consecutive year in MSLS. A few of her favourite things in life are fitness, good food, and her Great Dane named Benny. You can often find her procrastinating and stressing in the law cafe - make sure you come say hi! But beware: she will show you lots of photos of Benny!

2018 Committee Brodie Coyle SOCIALS JUSTICE OFFICER Brodie is in the first year of his law degree and has taken up the mantle of social justice officer continuing his passion for advocating for all social justice issues and looks forward to working on new social justice initiatives with the committee and its members.

Lucy Stronach CRIMINOLOGY REPRESENTATIVE Lucy is a fifth-year student studying a double degree in a Bachelor of Criminology and a Bachelor of Arts. She is extremely passionate about criminal justice and has a particular interest in human trafficking, serial killers, juvenile justice and organised crime. Lucy is heading to Vietnam, Thailand and Sri Lanka next year on a scholarship to intern with the UN and study forensic science and criminal justice. One day she hopes to work in defense, intelligence or with the Federal Police.

Claudia Martelli CRIMINOLOGY REPRESENTATIVE Claudia is currently in her fifth and final year studying a double bachelor of law and arts majoring in Criminology. This is her first year joining the MSLS Committee and hopes to pass on her knowledge and fun attitude to the rest of the Murdoch law students. Her hobbies include; drinking coffee, sleeping at the beach, or travelling. If you ever need any questions answered or help with anything please don't hesitate to ask her

2018 Committee Charlotte Sykora Solomon MATURE AGE REPRESENTATIVE Charlotte is in her 2nd/3rd year of Law after a career in government and raising a family. She has returned to study enthusiastic about connecting fellow mature age and graduate students with everything that MSLS and Murdoch has to offer. Charlotte has planned placements abroad in Jakarta and Geneva to complement her interest in human rights and social justice. In her spare time, she enjoys cultural exchanges with her family through travel and hosting travellers.

Elisha Rayner GENERAL COMMITTEE Elisha previously completed a Bachelor of Communications and briefly moved to New York before returning to studying Law at Murdoch. In 2017 she won the Negotiations and Client Interview competitions, and she looks forward to competing at ALSA and in Murdoch competitions in 2018 before she graduates. Outside of university, she loves the arts and you will catch her at the movies or theatres constantly.

Troy Sauzier GENERAL COMMITTEE Troy is one of the 2018 MSLS General Committee Members and is in his fifth and final year of law. Troy, in the past, has been involved with MSLS as the SVP and as IT Officer, he has competed in several mooting competitions including Kirby and Jessup, and has been on exchange to Germany. Troy is also a bit of a football (both AFL and European) fanatic.Troy, like every other normal person on the planet is a huge Star Wars fan. Troy looks forward to getting to know you in 2018!

SOCIALS MSLS hosts a range of events throughout the year, from competitions to educational seminars and social justice initiatives. However, every now and then, we do like to relax, have fun and throw a party or two. This is where the Socials portfolio comes in. Whilst Competitions gives you useful skills, and Educations and Careers prepare you for your life after uni, Socials is focussed on one simple goal: making sure you enjoy your time at Murdoch. MSLS offers a variety of events during both Semesters 1 and 2, each with their own unique feel and style. Below you will find some of the events on offer throughout the year.

COMPETITIONS A WORD FROM YOUR COMPETITIONS VICE-PRESIDENT First and foremost, a warm welcome to all first-year students in 2018! Law school is an incredibly exciting journey and a thoroughly rewarding one too. The forthcoming years will undoubtedly see you enjoy many laughs, form strong friendships and grow immeasurably as a person and as a budding-professional.

Competitions are an essential opportunity to grow yourself as a person and as a student. Competing in our competitions will give you a broad range of practical legal skills needed to succeed in the real world, skills that cannot be acquired in a classroom. You’ll quickly discover that your confidence, advocacy and practical problem-solving abilities benefit immensely by participating in simulations of real life scenarios.

To settle any initial fears, you may have about competing in our competitions, MSLS has fostered a friendly, supportive and exciting culture when it comes to our competitions. Particularly with first year competitions, MSLS and your fellow students will be there to encourage, advise and support you as you embark on the exciting new journey that is MSLS competitions. For first years particularly, we focus on learning and development, not winning. That is why many of the judges you face this year will be friendly, senior students who can provide you with relevant feedback and advice. Before all our competitions, we will run seminars to teach you all the important skills and information you will need for the competitions. If you can’t make the seminars, just let us know and we can send you all the information you need.

KING & WOOD MALLESONS JUNIOR CLIENT INTERVIEW The first junior competition of the year is Junior Client Interview. The Client Interview is a team competition, in which you and your partner will be faced with a client and their current dilemma.

The Client Interview Competition involves two partner competitors working together to question a potential client who has approached them with a legal issue. The ability to effectively interview a client is a key skill to have in the legal field.

When representing a client, it is vital to ensure that you have all the relevant facts and details of the scenario. The first meeting with your new client will also provide a foundation for the lawyer/client relationship, which is essential. The Client Interview Competition gives each team of two a set amount of time to ascertain all information necessary to allow you to represent your client effectively, and then some time to reflect on your interview with your Judge. Competitors must cover all the formalities of an interview, take note of the personal details of the client, the intricacies of the problem and suggest possible courses of action. Assessment is based on how well questions are asked, how well competitors interact with the client and each other If you struggle to find a partner, just send an email to cvp@msls.asn.au and we’ll help to facilitate a partnership for you.

SENIOR SEMESTER ONE COMPETITIONS First year law students are still allowed and encouraged to enter the senior competitions if they feel confident enough. At the very least, it gives you a good first practice and you can get an idea of how each competition operates.

Each competition has a seminar explaining the expectations, rules and how the competition operates. It is highly recommended that you attend these if you have not entered that competition before.

NOTE: To compete in MSLS competitions, you must first sign up as a member to MSLS. 22

SEMESTER TWO JUNIOR TRIAL ADVOCACY Running in Semester Two, Junior Trial Advocacy is a simulated criminal or civil trial in which students must act as either a prosecutor/plaintiff or a defendant. Students will give opening statements, closing statements as well as examining and cross-examining witnesses.

This competition is similar to the high school Mock Trials competition.

Junior Trial Advocacy will require preparation to succeed. Students will learn to develop a case theory and deliver a structured, logical legal argument in a practical environment.

The competition is excellent for beginners to develop their advocacy skills and the ability to improvise.Â

NOVICE MOOT - SEMESTER 2 Mooting is an excellent way to develop essential skills needed for the legal profession.

Ranging from thorough research skills to great oral advocacy, students who participate in Moots consistently credit the experience as one of the most valuable in which they have been involved. The Novice Moot, running in Semester Two, is a great entry to Mooting.

Novice Mooting is a way to develop the skills needed to get onto bigger, national or international moots. Students will compete against other first years with no Mooting experience.

Mooting is always a great asset for students to have on their CV and all students are encouraged to take this excellent opportunity to begin a Mooting pathway. Be it Melbourne, Adelaide or even Boston, Mooting has taken several students to all of these places before reaching their third year of Law studies.Â

WHY YOU SHOULD MOOT

By Joshua Scoles The Junior Criminal Law Moot assessment and competition is an opportunity that all first years should embrace. My own experience last year was that besides the $2 law café coffee, mooting is the best thing offered by the law school. Now while I may be biased because I was fortunate enough to win that competition, there are regardless some solid reasons why everyone should try mooting.

Before I tell you why you should moot, you should probably be clear on what it is. A moot is a mock judicial proceeding where students are given a position on a hypothetical case and then must research cases and legislation to then advocate for their given positions in front of a panel of judges. This involves written and oral submissions. Other competitions have more theatrical setups, but moots are fairly straight forward.

It may seem like a lot, and truth be told mooting is no cake walk, but it’s also extremely gratifying to do thorough research and formulate a solid case. But it’s more than researching and revising - like any good legal drama it also gets the adrenaline pumping. It challenges student’s wit, requiring them to improvise intelligent answers to judges’ impromptu questions while also constantly editing flow of their submissions. As much as it’s stressful, it’s also exhilarating.

However, I’m sure that for many first years a walk through fire is preferable to giving a speech and being grilled by judges. Even so, I still strongly recommend trying mooting.

Throughout your law degree you’re not going to be able to escape doing research legal and public speaking. These skills are vital to surviving law school and mooting is a fantastic way of honing your expertise.

All first year law students should really give competitions and mooting a go. It’s exciting, interesting and uses generally practical skills. If that’s not enough, the Junior Criminal moot also takes 10% of the unit's overall mark away from the exam. So even if you're still not buying what mooting is selling, try the Junior Crim Moot cause you’re probably going to do better in it (and like it more) than your exam.

Criminology Careers Day Date: TBC The Second criminology ‘Careers Day’ is sure to be a great event for all students hoping to find out more about career prospects and life after study, amongst other topics. We will be hosting a range of individuals (including Murdoch alumni) around the beginning of May, who will explain their involvement in the criminal justice system, and then be open to questions from our students. Unlike any event before, this Careers Day is aimed specifically at criminology students and is therefore not one to miss.

Boasting inside and outside seating areas, a selection of drinks and ready-to-go food, the Law Café is your university hot spot. The inevitable caffeine cravings associated with those long tedious hours of studying, can be satisfied with just a little loose-change - as all café-style coffees are a low $2 each! On top of supplying the cheapest coffee’s on campus, the Law Café also supplies a selection of hot and cold beverages, sweet and savoury snacks (such as pies, sausage rolls, sandwiches and muffins).

Managed and operated by the MSLS Committee on a volunteer basis ensures profits are put towards making MSLS social and educational events more rewarding. The ability to purchase MSLS membership, merchandise and tickets to social events, chill out couches and a microwave and kettle for all your Mi Goreng and Maggi Noodle needs. MSLS Jumper Each year MSLS produces a Murdoch Law jumper. These are the warmest and most comfortable wardrobe staples for when pulling an all nighter in the library before an assignment is due or studying for an exam.
