Welcome from the Dean I sincerely welcome all of our new students into our Law School and Murdoch University.

We welcome a diverse group of new students studying Law, Criminology, Business Law or Law, Business and Society. A significant number of you will aim to earn two degrees through our combined degree options and thus put your education on a very solid and competitive foundation.

A special welcome goes to our international students from Singapore and other places around the world who have chosen our Law School for their studies.

You have made a good choice with Murdoch Law School. Ours is an established Law School which has been graduating successful students for almost 25 years. Our graduates now sit on selection committees and make hiring decisions. Our Law School offers attractive opportunities for you to enhance your educational experience. Our Clinical legal education program is unparalleled in the state and offers hands-on client work and experiences for those who can qualify. Our

international programs broaden your horizon and expose you to other cultures and approaches.

Our mooting and competitions’ teams are highly successful and we have built a culture here at Murdoch that allows quite a few students to participate in the many competitions and moots we enter in or organise ourselves. Our Freehills Lecture Theatre, which also holds the Moot Court, has just been refurbished with the best audio-visual technology money can buy.

But at the core of it all are the people. The people are what makes a Law School work. The people at Murdoch Law School are the students and the staff, both academic and professional. Our success as a Law School depends on them. All of them. And thus our success as a Law School depends significantly on you! We need your engagement to be the best we can be. We need motivated students who want to learn and are willing to go the extra mile. You are not a customer, you are the main player. Think about the difference. Become involved as best as you can and there are many ways big and small to become involved. Talk to your colleagues at MSLS, for example. Share your ideas with us. Be an active student. A lot of work awaits you but also a lot of fun. University study is so much more than just sitting in lectures and tutorials, important as that is. If you discover that for yourself, you will not only get a great education but also create many fond memories of your time at Murdoch University.

President's Note

On behalf of the Murdoch Student Law Society I would like to warmly welcome you to Murdoch School of Law.

We have competitions, seminars, events, parties, balls, alcohol, and most importantly cheap coffee! We also have a lot of advice, hugs and help.

Law school isn’t easy.

It takes courage, determination, hard work and many sacrifices – I have given my blood, sweat, tears, hair and some of my sanity. In exchange for that though, I have been given a profession, an enormous body of friends and one hell of an incredible support network.

Now that we’ve got that bit out of the way, law school is also lot of fun! Get organised, get motivated, get your reading done, get your assignments in, get involved and embrace your chosen path at Murdoch. There is a lot to see and do and learn from. MSLS is here to support you through your transition from the warm cuddly world at large into ECL 2 and the red seats of HSF lecture theatre.

Look also to your peers - you’ll most probably run into them for the rest of your career. Whether you are here to study Law, Criminology, Legal studies or a combination of all, MSLS has your back. Come down to the law café and meet people. Say hello to the committee and seek advice and help from the older students – they were once in your shoes.

Oh, and Torts.. yeah.. you’re going to want to do your reading for that one. There is no way you can wing that unit. Trust me on that.

MSLS LAW CAFÉ

Boasting inside and outside seating areas, a selection of drinks and ready-to-go food, the Law Café is your university hot spot. The inevitable caffeine cravings associated with those long tedious hours of studying, can be satisfied with just a little loose-change - as all café-style coffees are a low $2 each! On top of supplying the cheapest coffee’s on campus, the Law Café also supplies a selection of hot and cold beverages, sweet and savoury snacks (such as pies, sausage rolls, sandwiches and muffins).

Managed and operated by the MSLS Committee on a volunteer basis ensures profits are put towards making MSLS social and educational events more rewarding. The ability to purchase MSLS membership, merchandise and tickets to social events, chill out couches and a microwave and kettle for all your Mi Goreng and Maggi Noodle needs. The Café will always be staffed by a MSLS Committee Member, so if you need to contact us, this is the easiest and fastest way.

The café is located on the ground floor of the Law School building (through the foyer and opposite the Herbert Smith Freehills Lecture Theatre).

QPay can be downloaded on both iOS and Android. Tickets, used university books and merchandise are all available on line. Super easy to use and once you have set up an account, it'll stay ready to on uyour phone. It also means you will have your ticlet barcodes right there.
