For nearly 150 years, Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall (MSLC) has provided high quality healthcare services throughout Orange County. Since our founding, we have fostered an environment that offers comfort and healing to our patients and their loved ones. MSLC’s longevity and continued growth is built on strong community partnerships and philanthropic support that has allowed us to achieve great success while offering compassionate care close to home. MSLC experienced a great deal of growth in 2023.

• We celebrated the grand opening of The Kaplan Family Center for Cardiovascular Medicine and Interventional Radiology on our Newburgh campus. This expansion and renovation project would not have been possible without the generosity of a $4M grant from The William and Elaine Kaplan Family Private Foundation, and it positions MSLC with the necessary space and state of the art equipment to provide life-saving care.

• On our Cornwall campus, we completed extensive renovations of the main lobby to create the Joan CusackMcGuirk Welcome and Navigation Center, streamlining how patients access care.

• Recognizing the growing demand of patients with Behavioral Health needs, we established an in-house Behavioral Health program with Telepsychiatry.

• In collaboration with our medical staff and community members, MSLC proudly established a Patient Blood Management and Bloodless Medicine Program. The program formalizes our commitment to appropriate use of blood products and to developing a culturally competent workforce that respects patient choices.

• MSLC’s Internal Medicine Residency Program achieved ten-year accreditation, solidifying our commitment to graduate medical education.

In short, the future of medicine is being developed right here in the Hudson Valley. Our commitment to building programs that meet the needs of the community goes far beyond the four walls of the hospital. In 2023, the Medical Group at Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall continued to expand in terms of both its physical footprint and services offered. The Medical Group opened a new 5,000+ square foot location on Route 300 with walk-in Primary Care. The new facility provides ample room, not only for Primary Care, but with space to accommodate our growing list of specialties including Infectious Disease; a Comprehensive Weight Loss Center, with both medical & surgical weight loss options; and an outpatient Anemia Center, designed to complement the Hospital’s Blood Management Program.

In 2023, philanthropic commitments to the St. Luke’s Cornwall Health System Foundation totaled nearly $2.2 million, with a 21% increase in the number of community donors. We are elated not only by the generous spirit of our supporters but also by the confidence placed in our ability to provide extraordinary healthcare today and well into the future. We thank The William and Elaine Kaplan Family Private Foundation for the culmination of the multi-year commitment in the above-mentioned Kaplan Family Center for Cardiovascular Medicine and Interventional Radiology. We would also like to thank Dr. Constantine Vardopoulos, a former physician at MSLC, who made an end-of-the-year gift of $1,000,000 and has decided to leave Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall in part of his estate plans.

In 2024, the Foundation is developing a full event line-up including the reintroduction of our Annual Gala which will honor Dr. Constantine Vardopoulos, David and Samantha Potack, and the Sonata Group. Throughout 2024, the Foundation will focus on donor-centric fundraising initiatives, including an estate planning program, where contributors can designate philanthropic support through pre-planned gifts. Read on for more information about leaving a legacy of care for future generations.

Looking to the future, the Foundation is poised to rise to new heights. As we prepare to celebrate MSLC’s 150th Anniversary in 2025, we are fortunate to have an outstanding steering council of remarkable community leaders and long-standing supporters that will help us plan for an exciting anniversary year. Stay tuned for more details on what memorable events, strong partnerships, and robust fundraising initiatives we have planned.

We want to thank you for your support. And if you are learning about us for the first time, welcome; we hope you will be inspired to get involved. As we move ahead, we look forward to building upon our past successes and building for the future. With your partnership and support, MSLC will continue its focus on providing exceptional, equitable, and accessible care that advances the health and well-being of our community.

A TIME TO CELEBRATE!

THE MEDICAL GROUP AT MONTEFIORE ST. LUKE’S CORNWALLNEWBURGH LOCATION GRAND OPENING

In March 2023, Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall hosted a ribbon cutting event to celebrate the grand opening of the Medical Group’s new and expanded office location on Route 300 in Newburgh. Several elected officials, community leaders, and loyal MSLC supporters joined Dan Maughan, President and Chief Executive Officer, to officially open this location, which offers primary care services with same day walk-ins, as well as occupational health services.

THE JOAN CUSACK-MCGUIRK WELCOME & NAVIGATION CENTER AND SKYWALK

In December 2023, MSLC hosted a dedication ceremony of the Joan Cusack-McGuirk Welcome and Navigation Center on MSLC’s Cornwall campus, and unveiled the Joan CusackMcGuirk Skywalk on its Newburgh campus. The ceremony welcomed nearly 100 community partners, elected officials, and donors, along with past and present employees, to dedicate this newly renovated space in the name of former President and CEO, Joan Cusack-McGuirk. The Welcome and Navigation Center was made possible in part by the generosity of David and Samantha Potack.

The St. Luke’s Cornwall Health System Foundation thanks these outgoing board members for their dedication and service over the past nine plus years:

Jill Cappa - Jill has been part of the MSLC family for more than 25 years serving in various capacities on the Foundation board including past Chair of the Board. She spent many years in the hospital’s Auxiliary as a volunteer and in leadership roles, including serving as President. Jill’s most notable role has been in Foundation fundraising events, especially the Hospital’s Gala. She helped create unique event themes and secured countless auction items which made each Gala memorable, invigorating, and, most of all, successful. Jill continues to volunteer and is co-chair of this year’s annual Gala.

Dr. Jeffrey Degen - Since 2015, Dr. Degen served on the Foundation board, most recently as Vice Chair. He provided invaluable guidance and advice and he set an excellent example for significant philanthropic support for all current and future board members. With an open ear and high moral standards, Dr. Degen’s dedication was very much appreciated. His commitment endures, and we thank him as he continues to support current Foundation programming.

Robert (Bob) Hatfield - Bob’s involvement with MSLC extends back many years, much of them spent in leadership roles on the Foundation board including as Secretary, Vice Chair and, most recently, Chair. He assumed each of these roles with commitment and integrity. Through his leadership, Bob played an instrumental part in recruiting new board members. He participated on various Foundation committees including Golf and Tennis. His leadership helped set the trajectory of the Foundation board for years to come and we look forward Bob’s continued support and presence at Foundation events.

“I am excited about the positive trajectory the Foundation is moving in; I know this is in part to the leadership each of these three very important individuals provided.”

-Dan Maughan, President and CEO

THANK YOU, KAPLAN FAMILY!

THE KAPLAN FAMILY CENTER FOR CARDIOVASCULAR MEDICINE & INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY

In June 2023, MSLC completed a renovation of The Kaplan Family Center for Cardiovascular Medicine and Interventional Radiology on the hospital’s Newburgh campus. Through the generosity of a $4 million grant from The William and Elaine Kaplan Family Private Foundation, MSLC expanded its Cardiovascular Medicine and Interventional Radiology (CVIR) Program to construct a third stateof-the-art Cardiac Catheterization Lab and Interventional Radiology room, a new pre/post recovery area, and a complete renovation of its two existing CVIR rooms to include the newest technology and equipment.

“The expansion of the CVIR Lab allows for faster and more efficient access to care, which increases MSLC’s capacity to diagnose and treat cardiovascular disease,” said Daniel Maughan, MSLC President and CEO. “The generosity of the Kaplan Family for decades to MSLC has transformed the manner in which we are able to care for our community. On behalf of the MSLC Board of Trustees, myself, our medical staff, and leadership, we thank Mr. Kaplan, the entire Kaplan Family, and The William and Elaine Kaplan Family Private Foundation for their continued support.”

The William and Elaine Kaplan Family Private Foundation has been a significant supporter of MSLC for more than thirty years. The Foundation has funded facility and programmatic enhancements to MSLC such as The Elaine Kaplan Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, The Kaplan Family Center for Emergency Medicine, and The Kaplan Family Birthing Center.

Metal Detectors

To keep our patients, visitors, and staff safer, we installed metal detectors on both the Newburgh and Cornwall campuses. This touchless security solution meets all post-pandemic screening requirements and allows for a seamless security check-in. Many hospitals throughout the country have transitioned to screening those who enter their facilities, and MSLC is proud to provide this technology on our campuses.

• Palliative Care Social Worker – This position meets with patients and/or family members to provide support, resources for bereavement counseling, and a space to ask questions that often patients and family members may not be comfortable addressing to doctors and nurses. This position completes a standard of care for patients who are faced with an end-of-life diagnosis with a multidisciplinary approach which includes not only medical but psychological, social, and spiritual help. The Palliative Care Social worker sees approximately 800-1000 MSLC patients annually.

• Oncology Care Navigator - This position assists cancer patients in navigating their cancer journey: getting their biopsy and diagnosis, helping them set up appointments, removing barriers including insurance and transportation, and guiding them on what to expect. The navigators continue to follow up with patients beyond treatment and into survivorship to ensure they are completing screenings as well as supporting them if the cancer returns. The Oncology Care Navigator sees over 500 patients annually and performs more than 2,000 visits.

• Lactation Specialist – This position assists pregnant, postpartum, and breastfeeding mothers with breastfeeding techniques, addressing any concerns, and support. An essential part of the MSLC team, the Lactation Specialist rounds on most patients and provides support and education so patients are able to make educated choices on their newborn’s health. This position sees approximately 1,200 patients annually.

Making Successful Life Choices Program

Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall (MSLC) initiated the Making Successful Life Choices Program in 2019 with seed funding from The Fund for Women and Children supported by The Rowley Family Foundation. These donations allowed MSLC to establish a program that helps new mothers with substance use disorder break the cycle of addiction. Its goal is to empower moms to provide a safe environment for their children so they can reach their full potential. Two case managers perform outreach in the community, finding and successfully bringing soon-to-be mothers into the program. This program connects patients to recovery groups, assists with job hunting and preparation, and much more.

Thanks to additional funding from The Fund for Women and Children, and donor funds from the Foundation, the program has continued to grow. Through 2023, The Making Successful Life Choices Program has engaged and worked with 144 women and counting.

FOUNDATION FUNDING

The St. Luke’s Cornwall Health System Foundation uses your donations to assist MSLC to provide advanced healthcare with cutting-edge technology in clean, modern facilities with safety in mind for all.

Recent funding initatives:

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU): Digital Monitors

Current practice is for clinicians to measure patients’ carbon dioxide levels for a more accurate picture of their oxygenation. This bedside device is now available to do the same for babies in the Elaine Kaplan NICU department at MSLC.

Emergency Department Patient Monitors and Respiratory and EKG Machines

Between new technological developments and over 250,000 patients treated annually at MSLC, we must continually update hospital equipment. The new Philips Patient Monitors and new GE Respiratory and EKG Machines will enhance patient care and streamline technology.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Throughout 2023, MSLC continued its community education and engagement with increased attendance at community events, festivals, and fairs.

This year’s celebration included many generously donated activities such as face painting, horse petting, a bouncy house, and a 360 photobooth.

“We look forward to this special celebration every year. It is incredibly fulfilling seeing the children born in our NICU continuing to grow and develop into happy and healthy young adults. We are committed to upholding the family bonds we have established long ago. Although they may have left our hospital, they haven’t left our hearts.”

ANNUAL FOUNDATION EVENTS

GOLF, TENNIS, & YOGA

MSLC hosted its annual Golf, Tennis, and Yoga event on July 17, 2023, at the Powelton Club in Newburgh. Through the support of our sponsors, donors, friends, and partners, we were able to raise $118,000 in net proceeds for the St. Luke’s Cornwall Health System Foundation.

SIGNATURE EVENT

MSLC’s 2024 Signature Event was held on October 21, 2023, at the Silk Factory in Newburgh, NY. The night was a 50’s themed Swanky Soiree, featuring live music from CloudNYne and TrueNorth Jazz Project. Thanks to our generous donors, including ticket sales and silent auction, MSLC raised $219,000 in net proceeds to fund patient care improvements, advance hospital technology, and help with emergent critical needs.

GRATEFUL PATIENTS

GRANDSON SPREADS HOLIDAY CHEER TO OTHERS IN NEED

In 2023, James Craccolici lost his grandfather at MSLC after a long illness. James’ grandfather loved the holiday season, and as part of a family who celebrates Christmas, he always looked forward to their holiday celebrations each year. In an effort to spread a bit of holiday cheer to others coping with an ill loved one, James and his mom delivered and decorated a beautiful tree, which was displayed in the ICU Family Waiting Room. This was a beautiful tribute and an act of kindness not only for our ICU and Critical Care teams, but also the many families who visited the waiting room during the holiday season.

FARMINGDALE STUDENTS EXPRESS THANKS FOR MSLC’S CARE

On September 23, 2023, MSLC’s Emergency Department received several pediatric patients as the result of a tragic bus accident that occurred on Interstate 84. Our staff relied on their training, expertise, and caring nature to heal and comfort these school-age patients.

Three months later, Farmingdale Schools’ Superintendent, High School Principal and School Nurse visited again carrying boxes of cards, letters of appreciation, and photos from the students and their parents. While thanks are never necessary or expected in this line of work, our employees truly were touched by this second meeting with Farmingdale School representatives. Hearing their perceptions of how we comforted them, and receiving handcrafted signs of gratitude, proved to be an emotional experience. This display of appreciation was a satisfying reminder of why we do what we do and what MSLC is all about.

DONOR SPOTLIGHT

FROM GREECE TO NEWBURGH A LIFE OF CARING

Upon meeting Dr. Constantine Vardopoulos you will feel as if you have known him for several years due to his kind smile and friendly presence. It might also be the fact that his work has influenced our community for more than half a century.

Born on May 1, 1933, in Piraeus, Greece, Dr. Vardopoulos was the second child of Basil and Cilo Vardopoulos. His father, a physician, owned and operated the St. Barbara Hospital in Piraeus, served as a congressman, and became the Minister of Health. His mother helped raise the family and played a large role in running the family hospital. When Dr. Vardopoulos was twelve, his father passed away.

POCKETBOOK BINGO

On November 9, 2023, the Foundation held a Designer Pocketbook Bingo in which participants played Bingo with the opportunity to win designer pocketbooks. The event also offered attendees opportunities to further support the hospital through raffles for a number of gift baskets donated by our esteemed supporters. Pamela’s on the Hudson hosted this sell-out event that raised funds for the greatest needs of MSLC.

Growing up in the Great Depression in Greece was not easy but Dr. Vardopoulos worked industriously and was accepted to Bologna University in Italy. He graduated in 1958 with a degree in general medicine. At that time, all Greek men were obliged to serve in the army for three years; however, after graduation, Dr. Vardopoulos only served one year due to his status as head of household.

In 1959, Dr. Vardopoulos came to America to complete his medical internship. He applied to and was accepted at St. Luke’s Hospital. For two years, he trained in various departments including the Emergency Room, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and the Operating Room. His room and board totaled $200, living in what was then the hospital’s laundry facility (now MSLC’s Engineering Department).

While in Newburgh, Dr. Vardopoulos met his wife, Anastasia. To complete his education, Dr. wanted to specialize in cardiology, but that would have required the young couple to move to Chicago and Mrs. Vardopoulos did not agree. Dr. Vardopoulos opted to study psychiatry instead and finished his studies at New York Presbyterian Hospital in New York City.

In 1966, Dr. Vardopoulos’ career took off. He opened his practice in Newburgh and served as a psychiatrist at St. Luke’s Hospital. For many years, he was the only psychiatrist on staff which led to many late night and weekend calls which he gladly answered. That same year, Dr. Vardopoulos also became an attending psychiatrist at the Craig House in Beacon, NY. The Craig House was a world-renowned psychiatric institution and the nation’s first private residential mental health facility. The institution assisted many rich and famous patients as well as employees from large corporations including IBM. In 1982, Dr. Vardopoulos bought the Craig House and operated it until he sold it in 1995. Dr. Vardopoulos continued to see patients at his private practice and remained part of the St. Luke’s Hospital Medical Staff until he retired in 2009.

Together, Dr. and Mrs. Vardopoulos raised three children: Basil, Clio, and Catherine. After his retirement, Dr. and Mrs. Vardopoulos traveled Europe and had many great adventures before Anastasia’s passing in 2022. Today, Dr. Vardopoulos divides his time between Newburgh and New York City. He enjoys attending services at his church, St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, in Newburgh. He is a member of the Metropolitan Opera and enjoys going to his favorite restaurant, Milos, in the city. Dr. Vardopoulos is a proud grandfather to Christos and Nina.

In December 2023, Dr. Vardopoulos called the MSLC Foundation and stated he wanted to make a $1 million donation and designate a portion of his estate to the hospital. When asked why Dr. Vardopoulos decided to donate to the hospital, he said, “St. Luke’s made me who I am today. I came to this country with $500 and made a life for myself.” When asked why others should consider giving, he shared, “The more resources we can provide the hospital, the better things they can do for the community. There are a lot of good doctors here and you do not need to go far.”

We commend Dr. Vardopoulos for his foresight in leaving MSLC in his estate plans. We encourage others to think about their legacy and help keep high quality healthcare in our community for generations to come. Donors have a wide range of options including designating appreciated securities, retirement plan assets, life insurance policies, real estate, donor advised funds, and more.
