Let’s all pause for a moment and take our time to consider the privilege of being alive in this place. We attend a private school and get a lot of attention and care from our teachers. Most of us are, hopefully, healthy and despite the hardships all humans must endure in their life, we have made it and are still alive to read this.

Vol 4 Issue 2 - Cloudy with a Chance of THANK YOU! 2024

The Benefit of Thankfulness Mariia Kosenko, Yusu Tsai Gratitude is a warm feeling that comes naturally but we can also develop this feeling by appreciating simple things around us. In studies about positive feelings, being thankful is linked to feeling even happier. Gratitude has positive effects on mental and physical health. Gratitude is more than just an instant good feeling. Scientists who have studied things like writing thank you notes or keeping gratitude journals have found benefits for a person's mental health and wellbeing. Practicing this feeling can also help you feel more satisfied with your surroundings and improve your self-esteem. Gratitude improves our relationships with others, both at home and at work. This connection between happiness and gratitude is really important. Expressing gratitude not only to others but also to ourselves, induces positive emotions, primarily happiness. By producing feelings of pleasure and satisfaction, gratitude impacts our overall health and wellbeing as well. Practicing gratitude has some really great effects on our body and mind. It helps us feel less stressed, anxious, and down, which leads to getting better sleep. It also helps to relax our nervous system and reduces inflammation in our body. And here's something interesting from a study in 2021: keeping a gratitude journal actually lowers a specific type of blood pressure called diastolic blood pressure. This measures how hard your heart is working between beats. So, being thankful isn't just good for our feelings, it's also good for our health! Throughout this article, we’ve looked at the power of gratitude. But there is still several evidence to suggest that gratitude can bring many benefits to our mental, physical health and other areas of life. THE_ISSUE - January 2024

10 Things to be Grateful For Giada Stockstill Within this world, there are many things that bring happiness and joy, and there is never a bad time to reflect upon those things! UCLA Health has stated that reflecting on gratitude for about seventy-five minutes a week, for six weeks, can reduce depression, lessen anxiety, support heart health, and improve sleep. Here are some examples of things to be thankful for: Friends Weekends Laughter Art Music IS-Ruhr Teachers Being in a safe country Food Nature

How can you show your gratitude? Now that we know the positive benefits of thankfulness, we need to put them into action! There are several ways to express gratitude towards yourself and others. In order to inwardly reflect upon your gratitude, you can use a thankfulness journal by writing down everything in your life that you are grateful for in a notebook. Overtime, the reasons to be thankful and positive will begin to double and even triple, and your life will only grow brighter! Showing your gratitude to others is even more fulfilling! You can give gifts such as sweet desserts, chocolate, or other well-thought out presents, write heartfelt appreciation notes, compliment others, spend time with them, and most importantly, say ‘thank you.’ All of these things coalesce into the benefits of thankfulness!

What are you thankful for today? Write them down ...

On November 21st, IS-Ruhr held an Open Day for families who wished to join the school and see the atmosphere and the community that the teachers and students had created. It allowed for the families to meet and see teachers in person, and to learn more about the curriculum and various class activities. Additionally, it gave an opportunity for students to take part in the Open Day by showing the families around the school and answering any questions they may have had. The families were allowed to go inside of the classrooms during lessons, sit down and learn more about what the students were studying, and they were able to talk to the working students to learn more about their assignments! The school also provided drinks, snacks, and information for the interested parents. Here at IS-Ruhr, we are incredibly thankful for our school staff, and we are also incredibly thankful that the families joined us at Open House! We are always eager to have new students joining our school community and adding more life to the campus.

Magic the Gathering Oliver Jones Katz Magic the Gathering is one of the first trading card games to earn global recognition. It was first developed in 1994 by a mathematician by the name of Richard Garfield. The game first started out with Alpha. The cards in this set were somewhat primitive to cards nowadays, their design being simple. Since then, so many different sets have come out and the game has changed quite a bit. In simple terms, Magic is a game in which the players are spellcasters, or mages. They use “land” cards which are the main resource for this game and pay the “mana” that these lands produce to “cast” spell cards. Mana is like money, there is a finite amount of it, and the possibilities are infinite. The main objective of the game is to reduce your opponent’s life total to 0. Usually, players' starting life is 20. In the game, there are five colors, red, white, green, blue, and black. Each color represents a different type of mana, and a different way of playing the game. Red represents passion and combat, white represents peace and harmony, green is growth and community, blue is control and knowledge, and black is power at any price. In conclusion, magic gathering is innovative and widely available to the public. It is accessible and enjoyable.

Thankfulness for fishing Marvin Printzen You can fish in different types of ways. For example, people use rods, nets, and even handlines, but there are different sides to fishing. I'm thankful that I am able to fish for fun, have amazing fishing gear, and live in a place where I can do it for fun without a worry in the world. I also have the chance to catch fish from all around the world and fish in places which few can see. However, others aren't so lucky. Fishing is very important around the whole world, with communities relying on fishing for income and food for their families, and this is seen in countries like Indonesia, where fishing is the most important source of income for small communities on the ocean, since there are about three-thousand species of bony fish and eight-hundred fifty sharks, rays, Chimaeras, and crustacean species. The most overfished animal in Indonesia is the shrimp and they are overfished in more than two-thirds of Indonesian waters. Due to commercial fishing and communities relying on fishing, there is a large decrease in population of species; some of these species have been fished to extinction. Due to this fact, I am thankful that I am allowed to fish for fun and only take what I need.

The CAS fun run Milan Zinflou The CAS fun run is a yearly event here at ISruhr that raises money for CAS, while also teaching students wriggle QI skills by letting students run around the playground in laps. The students should get their parents or guardians or whoever else is willing to sponsor them, to donate a set amount to the CAS budget pool with every lap the student runs. But let's slow it down a bit. What even is CAS? Well, CAS stands for Creativity, Action, Service and it is part of the DP core. To complete CAS, you need to undertake a project that tackles one of the three aspects of CAS (Creativity, Action, or Service), like for example, a potential project could be engaging in a form of nonprofit social work.

However, unfortunately, projects like this can't come from nothing and need funding, and while the school has some budget available, it can't pay for every student's projects out of its own pocket. So, the CAS fun run can aid students in getting the necessary budget to fund their projects. So that's all fun and good, but why should you care? If you aren't in grade 11 or 12 then the funding for CAS really isn't your problem, right? Well yes, but also, no. If you plan on staying in the school, then you will eventually also be part of the IB and will have to participate in a CAS project. It would really suck if you have a good project idea, but didn’t have the money to make it a reality, so consider this when thinking of the grade 11 and 12s. So, if you have a sponsor willing to donate, then I would suggest you get them to do so, so you can be thankful when someone else does the same for you once you are in the IB.

Elianne Andam and the Radicalization of the Youth Mia Mbalisike

On the morning of the 27th of September, a young girl was on her way to school, but she wouldn’t arrive there, let alone ever come home again. This girl was Elianne Andam, a victim of a stabbing in Croydon, London. This stabbing was of a misogynistic nature. At the time, she was fifteen years old and preparing for her GCSE’s, just like our current grade 10 students. The ex-boyfriend of her friend was trying to win her friend back, but when Elianne’s friend didn’t reciprocate the perpetrator’s feelings, he pulled out a foot-long machete and started chasing the two with it. He was trying to stab his ex-girlfriend, Elianne’s friend. Elianne Andam tried to protect her friend and got stabbed in the neck during it, effectively ending her life. The murderer is seventeen years old and was taken into police custody. Though this issue is atrocious by itself, it is important to consider the full picture. Crimes against women have been an issue for many centuries, but in recent years the crimes have evolved due to technological advancements: namely, the internet. As many may know, the internet is filled with a lot of information from plenty of sources, which leads to bias and hatefulness also being present in the internet. Many people that browse the internet regularly are desensitized to issues, and even violence, which, by extension, makes them not only feel apathetic towards the violence, but actually transforms it into something appealing or funny for them.

THE_ISSUE - January 2024

Page 15

A recent example of hate being viewed as humorous was the Sneako incident. Sneako is a popular Youtuber, whose humor often consists of misogyny. Recently, there has been a video of a member of his young, male audience approaching him and upon meeting him immediately chanted “F*** the Women.” The Youtuber was horrified, but the kids kept on repeating it, in hope of getting approval from their idol. The content they consumed made them think that hate wasn’t only funny, but that it also was good and would earn them approval. This is something called “stochastic terrorism,” a form of terrorism in which people that are looked up to, such as political figures, or in this case, influencers, spread hate to inspire their audience to commit violence against certain groups of people. Oftentimes it is not purposeful, but still effective. A more extreme case of this occurred in 2019 during the Christchurch Mosque shootings, in which one or multiple people raided and shot up mosques, leading to at least forty-nine Murders. One of these shooters published a manifesto, in which he frequently mentioned a lot of internet and meme culture, as well as the well-known Youtuber PewDiePie. PewDiePie is well known for his dark humor consisting of slurs, racism, and anti-semetic and islamophobic sentiments on various occasions. Even if he wasn’t the sole reason for the shootings, the shooter said himself that he was inspired to commit acts of violence and mass murder…because of PewDewPie. This radicalization doesn’t only apply to adults with guns, but in the case of Ellianne Andam, it is also perpetrated by teenage boys, on teenage girls. Her murder worked as a sort of warning call, creating global outrage on behalf of her and positively inspiring many people to raise awareness and talk about this issue. The world can be thankful for activists and awareness being spread in retaliation to misogyny, violence, and murder.

Elianne will not be forgotten, say her name. THE_ISSUE - January 2024

I am grateful for the hard work and creativity demonstrated by my grade 9 English students throughout the first unit of the year. The students opened up and took chances in their writing- sometimes poetry and writing about our own challenges and emotions can be scary! Students studied three mentor texts (My Neighborhood by Elizabeth Acevedo; excerpt from The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein; excerpt from The Running Dream by Wendelin Van Draanen) and then wrote their own versions. After editing and feedback workshops, they submitted their final work. With much gratitude, I present the creative musings of grade 9 -- Jennifer Janis

Shining evening By Bassila Asmann The summer is made up of sunshine and light. My friend’s laying next to me and since the midsummer stretches out the day a warm blanket covers me with sunshine. I look at my house that always felt like home. My eyes following my parents, their faces in a tan color, turning on the grill as their smiles were a beam of sunlight lightning even the smallest dark places. My skin is being warmed a bit more every time another little fire turns on. Watching my brothers playing with a bucket of water as they free a sea over the whole garden Listening to my neighbor who talks to my dad through the plant kingdom that separates our little world from theirs. Listening and laughing about the things my friend told me about what they said. Smiling about the beauty of the fantastic smell from the smoked finished product with a flavorful outside spice. I turn around and take a look at the rich sky as the sunset closes the day like a golden curtain. THE_ISSUE - January 2024

Animal Writing By Anonymous Just at the crack of dawn we headed out of the cave as we do every no t-too windy day. Feeling the breeze stroke through my fur just after waking up gives this specific sensation that‘s difficult to explain. “Wake up sleepyhead, we‘re going to take a quick flight off the cliff again“ “mmmh gimme a moment“, Mist mumbled out of her sleep. She was usually the one to wake up first on days like these but I guess she was quite tired today. No wonder to be honest, we did go out for a pretty long time yesterday. “Me and Ghost will be taking a quick dip in the river, we‘ll wait for you after“ I tell her as I turn back towards the river. Me and my siblings are pretty close to one another, but what can you do when you live in a cave in the middle of a mountain with barely anyone around? We don’t talk to squirrels or something, at least they won’t talk to us.. “I‘m hu-*yawn* mm I’m ready guys!!“ I heard Mist coming towards us in a gallop, shaking out her wings to get ready for flight. Ghost slowly gets out of the water as they see her stopping by us. “ahh, refreshing“ as they shake and flap their wings to get all the water out- on Mist. “HEYYY Ghost come onnnn“, she chuckles though, “but you are right, that was refreshing to be honest“ “You‘re welcome!!“ As we finish getting ready, we go downhill to our usual spot at the cliff just to be greeted by another gust of wind. Mist almost got tossed on her back, causing me to burst into laughter. She simply clawed herself back on her paws and shook the feathers on her head once again. She was the youngest amongst us and the silliest too. I didn’t talk to all my siblings so often since many of them were off doing their own thing, not that I would bother interrupting them with whatever they‘re up to. “‘You guys ready for takeoff?“ Ghost exclaimed eagerly, spreading their majestic, grey and red wings slapping me right in the muzzle. I wrinkle my face but just nod my head and go towards the cliff. Looking down at the steep mountain gives me a sudden rush of anxiety, not like I haven’t done this since I was a pup. I close my eyes and let my surroundings diffuse with me as I stretch my wings out to the side and leap into the air.

Anonymous’ Animal Writing I see an open window in the corner of my eye. I make my way to it to explore, I fly through the wide open gap into a huge bedroom. With my wings, I go into the air and land softly on an old man. Just before he slaps me, I fly away until he lays back down on the green sofa, then slowly I land on him again until he is super annoyed. A feeling of joy runs through my body, if i could i would be laughing at him. There really is not a lot more to explore here, I guess I will make my way back home. I fly up in the air and make my way to the window. I could just fly out and go home, but that would not be fun. I pretend as if I can't see the exit and scream as loud as possible. The old man is getting very mad. It is very funny, just as he gets up with a purple towel he could easily kill me with, I make my way back home and fly out of the window. I love annoying and exploring.

Eashan Vineed’s Animal Writing I grasp a bamboo stem with my paws and slowly use my teeth to peel off the tough outer layers. After I strip the leaves away from the stalk, I place them on the ground, a delightful treat for later. As time passes, sounds of chatter increase outside my cage. Crowds gather to watch my peculiar behavior of chewing on bamboo, falling over, and rolling on the ground. They would sit on the edge of their seats, with cameras to capture my every move, and filled with anticipation. I experience an instant surge of joy as I sit in my cage with my gaze turned away, deliberately making them wait, acting shy. Despite the delight of minuscule moments like these, the profound longing to live in the vast, temperate forests I could roam freely haunts my thoughts. When I see families laugh at my silly behavior, a wave of horrible memories floods my mind. I rewind to the day when a group of cruel beings abducted me from the warmth and care of my mother, and my life tore apart. It all happened so quickly, and I was just a young cub. The warmth I felt when my mom placed her paw on me, that feeling of belonging, is now a distant dream. In this cage, my purpose has been reduced to eating bamboo, turning my back on the people who use me for amusement, and comprehending that I can no longer be with my family. I wish everyone could understand the extreme boredom, the everlasting depression, and the staggering frustration this place imposes upon me. THE_ISSUE - January 2024

Lukas Blaukitz’s Animal Writing I'm sitting here doing my usual Goat things, eating grass, doing my business everywhere. This is my daily routine except for the fact that on mondays me and the others have a bashing contest, this consists of us running against one another with our horns and we see who passes out first this is what we do to have the time go over faster, for theirs nothing else we can do on the fields it's just empty filled with grass greener than the old oak trees growing in the woods, the crystal blue skye, once we have all had our fun we tend to get very tired and all decide that it's best we have our annual midday nap, for the sun is always so hot during midday. The only thing that can wake us up is that annoying dog that Farmer Cornelius had gotten to protect us and also to keep us in check. Even though he's here to protect us it's still scary seeing a dog with razor sharp teeth that could attack anytime and Cornelius can't do anything about it because the dog would overpower him in any instance. But the funnest part of the week is when we get to walk from our farm to the neighbor farm where we get trimmed for our furr. The fresh feeling of being furless is amazing. You aren't so hot all the time and you can actually feel the breeze flowing along your body. It's so nice you can finally sleep well at night and don't have the feeling of something in your furr that prevents you from sleeping and with these useless hoofs you can't do anything, it's impossible to scratch yourself if you've got an itch, and you can't wave away the flies in your eyes that block your vision and annoy you. Only downside is that it can get very very very cold nights which is also not the best thing in the world but we usually just hai to cover ourselves up and stay warm at night. The food Cornelius makes for us is the best. That stuff is scrumptious and fills all of us up and it makes you so tired bcs of how filling it is. The Farm is fun. It's like my neighborhood, filled with the ones I love and the ones who bring me most joy. It may seem repetitive but for us goats it's normal, we sleep, we eat, and we repeat. It may not seem fun to many but as long as you are surrounded by your people and people you get along with it doesn't matter because the time will always go faster.

Neighborhood Poem By Anonymous A brisk summer morning, birds begin to chirp, and cicadas rise from their night deep slumber, Ready to buzz their favorite songs. Waking up taking in the sun's beautiful gaze as it creeps over the hills in which the migrating sea birds call home. I look around and I see home, I smell the soft but strong seabreeze mixed with the bakery’s inviting smell of freshly baked pies. Sneaking into the fridge I take a LnP and as I take a cold sip it reminds me of home I look around once again and I see the Estuary, I see the ocean, I see our boat that's parked in the driveway with my dad on it as he sets up rods and checks the engine. He looks at me, smiles and waves as he's ready to go.

Shoelaces By Oliver Jones-Katz He asked me why I tied my shoes that way. He said that even the smallest of children know how to tie their shoes properly. “You fool, that’s not how you do it. You fool. You fool. You fool. Weak. Weak. Weak. You’re a weak fool. A weak, weak, weak fool. You’re just a weak fool’’ He said. “They’re just shoelaces”. I replied. “How I tie my knots is entirely up to me. They represent nothing of my character or my strength and ability.” Then, he said to me, he screamed at me, that he’ll steal my shoes. That he’ll show me how to tie a better knot. That he knows how to do it better. “I am the shoe master!” He said, “Your shoes belong to me! All shoes belong to me! You belong to me! Everything belongs to me!” “Wow”. I replied.

Rats of the Air By Anonymous I scurry along the streets, looking for food, the cold, dirty pavement scours my claws. The only thing colder than the pavement are the looks humans give me. I once heard we were used as a form of transportation, bringing people letters. Then, as soon as other methods were created, proving to be more effective, we were abandoned and discarded of, out onto the streets. I get frightened as yet another person yells at me, for being in its way. I used to be able to fly, but I got kicked once too often, now the only thing covering my right-winged bone, are some of my feathers stuck to dried blood. I feel a painful burning sensation, every time it moves, wearing me down more and more. I know I won’t be able to carry on for much longer, so I crawl towards a plastic bag, laying in a dark and lonely alley, looking for just a tiny bit of comfort. My eyes start to close. I didn’t chose to be born a pigeon.

It's like when you are climbing a mountain and you can see the top of it, you imagine how beautiful and satisfactorywould be to see the sunset in the top in the mountain, And to be proud of yourself for having accomplished that goal. but your body is super tired, you cannot keep going, you fell sleepy, you feel like you're just going to faint, but you decide that you are going to making it and using your last breath you get to the top, and you can now see the sunset in the horizon. An exam week is practically the same you have to do a lot of studying before the test which already makes you tired, but then you also have to do the exam which makes you even more tired and then you have to study for even more exams doing 2 of them a day for 3 days, but when your finish the exams you feel great and satisfied.
