Spooky Scary Skeletons - Halloween celebration at IS Ruhr

Jonas Gesing

The Friday prior to Halloween many students in IS Ruhr, as well as teachers, wore their scariest costumes and celebrated Halloween together.

In EY, children dressed up to celebrate Halloween in the spookily decorated EY center. Parents helped to organize a fantastic breakfast for all the children to have together. Throughout the day EY 2 and 3 had fun playing party games and doing exciting activities, such as face painting, knocking over the ghosts with a pumpkin, and sweet catching. To finish off the children watched a movie - ‘Mickey’s Halloween’ - while eating popcorn.

In PYP, classes celebrated in their homeroom together with their homeroom teacher. Students and teachers together decided on fun activities they could do. Games, such as musical chairs, were played, and movies, such as Jumanji, were watched. All classes brought food and drinks as snacks to eat during the party.

In SY, Grades 6 to 12 came up with activities other classes could come and do. Grade 10 invited to a fun run of Werewolf; meanwhile, Grade 11 and 12 invited to different Halloween movies. Additionally, students could serve themselves at the buffet, to which each student contributed by bringing something to snack To round things off, there was a bingo, completed by the rooms visited. Every student, who had achieved a bingo, could participate in a random selection for the winner of the final contest. Thanks to the PTA's generous donation, the winner received an Amazon gift card

Overall, the celebrations prepared all of the students for the long weekend ahead of them, filled with more Halloween joy!

Lunch Bunch

On 04.11.2022 was the first ever installment of “Lunch Bunch”, an idea to improve the school community The idea is to get together every once in a while to talk about issues and find solutions together so that the school can make progress in making everyone comfortable and happy Even though the school is international, there are still many issues regarding international mindedness, which was the theme for this Lunch Bunch.

Many things were brought up, such as accents and awareness People who are less educated about discrimination have a habit of imitating and even mocking the accents of others, which has hurt students When trying to bring this up to the students themselves they never seemed to listen, so it was brought up in the Lunch Bunch instead. Students that are part of minority groups agreed that they dislike the lack of acknowledgment of their existence Things like neurodiversity, which some people have to live with every day of their lives, are not recognized by neurotypical people Some people suggested a notice board, on which there could be a little notice of celebrations. Others came up with the idea of mentioning a “daily dose of facts” in every morning announcement

Though the meeting was largely productive and enjoyed by the participants, there is more we can do Everyone is encouraged to join and share their ideas to improve the school.

The IB Life

On the 10th of November, Grade 11 and 12 students held their OMEGA presentation about IB life The aim was to inform younger students about subjects, assignments, and assessments in the IB, as well as giving them tips to deal with stressful situations.

The IB is an inquiry based curriculum, so it’s not only based on academics They explained the two different subject groups in IB: standard level and higher level (a more advanced version of the standard level) The subject Theory of Knowledge requires one to think about where what you know comes from; a student should make a project based on this query Students must write a 4000 word Extended Essay, based on a research project they have done themselves. Lastly CAS Creativity, Activity, and Service. For example; for the area service some Grade 11 students designed a box for collecting plastic bottles that could be recycled later, through which they were able to collect money to donate to an organization that removes waste from water and did something new. Without TOK, CAS, and Extended Essay, one won’t be able to get their diploma The IB shared the message to work on weaknesses to become better at something as the process of finishing IB is challenging.

Working on Extended Essay

Students are not only graded on written exams or oral tests. They talked about the Internal Assessments like oral presentations, projects, or an experiment graded by their teacher The IBs explained the different projects one could do for different subjects. For example in History, one could do research on the history of a place that really interests them During this, the IB students shared the message of starting early, so work doesn't add up in the end; IB students have a large workload

CAS

Grade 11 and 12 students explained the IB's rigor brilliantly. The IB is a curriculum that judges your verbal as well as written skills It requires you to work on areas other than academics like TOK, CAS, and the Extended Essay.

EY's LEGO Land Trip

On the 14th of November EY2, EY3, and Grade 1 went on a field trip to Legoland in Oberhausen The aim of the trip for EY2 was to explore different ways one could use their body.

Legoland advertises itself as an immense indoor playground this indoor playground was beneficial for the inquiry of the EY2 children. They practiced different ways to use their body. Jumping, climbing, sliding, running, everything was allowed to be attempted and explored

The children also faced many challenges, and saving the princess was one At the Kingdom Quest center, they became part of the royal army. While driving through the princess’ royal terrain, they had to save her from big trolls and evil skeletons At the build and test center, the children had to use their creativity and imagination to build cars out of infinite LEGO pieces. There were no limitations to what EY and Grade 1 were able to build Finally, the children were able to test their car ’ s speed at the racing center.

In the end, everyone watched a 4D LEGO Halloween movie together. Overall, everyone enjoyed the exciting field trip and the children were able to explore possible ways of using their bodies

IB Shakespeare Workshop

The Shakespeare Workshop, hosted on November 9th, was an educational workshop for the IB students who had previously studied Shakespeare and one of his pieces called “Macbeth”. The students meet with the co artistic director and professional actor Parenteau The aim of this workshop was to understand that Shakespeare’s pieces were not as difficult as thought. Ms. Jen, their English teacher, wanted the IB students to have fun and get out of the classroom in order to learn in an entertaining way

This workshop has made the IB students realize that Shakespeare’s pieces were not really difficult to understand, but also interesting to learn about them. While learning how to act in theater pieces, they also learned how to not get nervous, as many people tend to get nervous when acting in front of others.

The workshop consisted of three sessions. The first session worked on relaxing the body and making sure that students were not nervous when it comes to Shakespeare They worked on Shakespeare's piece Macbeth and learned how actors portrayed the words they write to how they are performed and appear alive on the stage. In the second session, they learned a guessing game. Beforehand they had practiced a scene, then they would need to guess where it came from in the story Lastly, in the third session, they had to act out the scene that they had practiced like Shakespeare would have done back in the day.

Who is St. Martin?

St Martin was born in 316 in today’s Szombathely, Hungary, and died on November 8, 397 of pagan parentage, Martin chose Christianity at age 10. When he was old enough he was forced into the Roman army but later he found his passion as a biographer. His reasoning for leaving the army was that Christian soldiers are not allowed to fight

While he was still in the military and a catechumen of the faith, Martin cut his cloak in half and shared it with a beggar He dreamed that Jesus himself was clothed with the torn cloak while he was sleeping that same night When he awoke, the cloak was restored Moved by this vision and apparent miracle, Martin immediately finished his religious instruction and was baptized at the age of 18

Martin of Tours, Saint Today, St Martin’s Day is celebrated in remembrance of him The event takes place on the 10th of November in most countries. Traditionally a big fire is made and people gather around with their friends Usually, a man dressed up as St. Martin rides a horse and gives out pieces off his clothes like in the real story

In southern Germany, St. Martin's Day is celebrated on the 11th of November. German children carry candle lit lanterns and sing ‘Lantern Songs’ in the processional celebration of the saint The largest procession takes place in Kempen, northwest of Cologne, with 4,000 people marching behind a Roman soldier on a white horse. The children’s processions begin as darkness falls, and often end with a bonfire

At our school, St. Martin's Day was celebrated on the 9th of November in the evening at 5 pm. A lot of people from our school attended. There was food, such as sausages and pretzels, and buns sold; all the money made was donated to the PTA (Parent Teacher Association) for more events like this

The Talent Show Auditions

On November 11th, auditions for our school’s first talent show were held. The creative mind behind this event was Varshini, a Grade 12 student, who intended this project for CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service). The auditions were held in Room 1 at the Secondary Years building This amazing event allowed students to reveal their outstanding talents, from artwork to performing magic tricks with cards, in a span of 3 minutes.

Who said students at our school can’t be magicians? Oliver, a Grade 8 student, stole the spotlight by demonstrating multiple card tricks in a span of only 3 minutes One of which was, him taking a card deck, shuffling it well, and asking someone to split it into two, once done, Oliver said the name of a random card; “Jack of Spades''; and picked up the first card from one of the piles; it turned out to be it; utterly stupendous The judges and the audience were all shaken, truly mind blowing

The next set of performances was done by brothers; Omar and Kareem; both Grade 6 students; and their friend Baran, a Grade 7 student In their acts, they flaunted their amazing gaming strategies and techniques while playing video games During this, they were able to achieve all of their desired goals in the games.

Last but not least: a drawing 3 minutes is certainly not enough for drawing something brilliant, but a Grade 10 student (I) proved this wrong An abstract drawing consisting of a portrait and odd designs was brilliantly drawn in this period of time. It was a fine work of art and the judges were very impressed.

The auditions were truly a great success, through it, we were able to see the brilliant talents hiding among us That’s not the end, it won’t be soon until the Talent Show itself arrives at our doorstep, where students compete against each other, to win fantastic prizes.

Dia de los Muertos

“Dia de los Muertos” or “Day of the Dead” is a traditionally Mexican holiday during which it is believed that the dead come to celebrate with the living First the souls of the children on November 1st of October, then the souls of the adults on the 2nd, and finally all souls on the 3rd.

One of the most iconic traditions of the Day of the Dead is the “Ofrenda”, an altar to commemorate a loved one who passed away. The Ofrenda is decorated with Mexican oilcloths and “papel picado” (colored sheets of tissue paper with designs cut into it) and usually carries photos of the person and their favorite foods and objects. Often certain other objects such as candles, bowls of water, spices, copal, strongly flavored flowers, and sugar skulls (colorful ornaments made out of sugar resembling a human skull) are also placed on the Ofrenda as they are believed to support the soul in various ways Frequently visited public spaces will also sometimes put up larger Ofrendas that commemorate artists, writers, and other historical figures

It is common to visit and celebrate in graveyards on the Day of the Dead. Graves will be cleaned and decorated with candles, marigolds, and the person's favorite foods and objects, similar to Ofrendas which will also often be placed near graves

There are a lot of delicious foods that are traditionally consumed on the day of the dead, so many in fact that I can only name a few There are a lot of sweet foods that will make your mouth water, such as Pan de Muerto, a sweet bread that is shaped like bones; Calabaza en tacha, candied pumpkin flavored with sugar and cinnamon; Caramel flan; and Alegrias and Pepitorias, small candies made with seeds, honey, and dried fruits But there are also a lot of savory foods to enjoy such as Mole negro, a complex sauce with numerous ingredients that brings a burnt and chocolatey flavor; Tamales, a corn paste steamed in cornhusks or banana leaves; red pozole, a stew with meat, chili, hominy, and spices; Sopa Azteca, a spicy soup served with various ingredients you can choose yourself; and Chapulines, grilled crickets seasoned with garlic, lime, and salt.

Solar Eclipse

Many people ask themselves what a Solar Eclipse is. Sometimes when the Moon orbits Earth, the Moon moves between the Sun and Earth When this happens, the Moon blocks the light of the Sun from reaching the Earth. This event of the Moon moving between the Sun and Earth causes an eclipse of the Sun, or in other words a solar eclipse. During a solar eclipse, the Moon casts a shadow onto Earth which causes darkness So anyone standing in that shadow will be able to see the solar eclipse.

Many people would think of looking at the solar eclipse if they were in the shadow of the moon, but you shouldn't do that. During a solar eclipse, you should wear special glasses which protect your eyes If you look with unprotected eyes into the solar eclipse, it could destroy the retina inside your eye, leading you to lose vision. Your eyesight will decrease which might cause you to wear glasses This is why you should avoid looking directly into the solar eclipse without special glasses.

On the 25th of October, there was a Solar Eclipse happening here in Germany. It was set to happen at around 11 am whilst the students of our school had class time. In Essen, we weren’t able to see it unfold It was partly cloudy and couldn't be viewed that well Still, you could feel that it got colder and darker outside due to the eclipse. This made us understand how important the sun is and what difference it makes without a small part of it.

Native American History Month

What is Native American Heritage Month?

Native American Heritage Month is a time to celebrate the diverse culture of the many Native American tribes Their traditions, histories, and important contributions are acknowledged. Other than that it is important to recognize their unique struggles throughout history till this day

The Native American Heritage Month wasn’t always a month, in fact, it started off as a single day. In 1916 a member of the Blackfeet Nation, Red Fox James, rode to 24 states in order to gather their approval for a day to establish a day in honor of Native Americans

It first took place in May 1916. Additionally, Boy Scouts were persuaded to set aside a day in celebration of the “First Americans” from 1915 onward for 3 years Decades later in 1986, US President Reagan proclaimed it to be a week from the 23rd to the 30th of November. After Another 4 years, President George Bush approved for it to be a whole month

Eventually, during President Barack Obama’s time, it was changed to what exists now, “Native American Heritage Month”, since recently it was named something that is considered offensive today.

How do people celebrate this Month?

There are many different ways to celebrate heritage months Many people organize activities both online and in person to talk about joy, struggles, and culture during this month. Raising awareness about not only the month but also the people that the month surrounds is a core component of Native American Heritage Month Natives are often given a hard time by everyone around them, especially in America

Mia Mbalisike

In the US there has been a habit of cutting off clean water and funds for native Americans This neglect of native American citizens has been going on for decades and there is barely any awareness surrounding it. Heritage months are also the time to recognize and support native people Appreciating and supporting native small businesses, activists, artists, and more can be a great way to show support for Native Americans during November and also any other time

Influential Native Americans

Chief Powhatan was an influential chief of 30 tribes He was born in the 1540s 1550s and was in control of the area where the Jamestown settlement was formed in 1607. The Powhatan people were a matrilineal society, so his right to become the chief came from his mother’s side When he first became the chief he ruled over 6 tribes which were the Powhatan, Pamunkey, Arrohateck, Appamattuck, Youghtanund, and the Mattaponi His influence grew over time till he was in control of 30 tribes, who each also had its personal chiefs, nevertheless they still answered to Chief Powhatan The entire territory in his control was called Tsenacommacah, or Tenakomakah, and covered about 6 thousand square miles with 14 thousand inhabitants One thing he is also known for is his daughter, Pocahontas, who married a colonizer Though Chief Powhatan’s birth year isn’t clear, it is known that he died in April of 1618

Sacagawea was a Shoshone interpreter known for being the only woman on the Lewis and Clark expedition She was born in 1788, but there isn’t a lot of knowledge about her early life. Sacagawea’s name means “boat puller”, or “bird woman ” with the alternative spelling “Sakakawea” When she was about 12 years old she was captured by an enemy tribe called the Hidatsa. She was then sold to a French American who made her marry him She lived with him among the Hidatsa and Mandan tribes. In 1804 she was chosen to accompany Lewis and Clark, as well as Charbonneau on an expedition because of her knowledge of the Shoshone language, despite being pregnant with her first child at the time. In 1805 she gave birth to her son, Jean Baptiste Charbonneau Even with her newborn child she proved herself helpful in many ways. When she eventually left the expedition she passed away in 1812.

World Vegan Day

Veganism is increasingly becoming popular World Vegan Day is celebrated on November 1st to acknowledge that Earlier, veganism started off as a diet trend but over the years, veganism grew into a lifestyle option.

People who are vegan do not consume any animal products Like vegetarians, they avoid meat and fish but eggs, honey, gelatin, and dairy products such as milk as well. Veganism, though, is not only about avoiding the consumption of any sort of animal products, but also avoiding making use of animal cruelty in clothing, soap, beauty products, and many more

A vegan diet is not only based on food, such as fruits and vegetables, like many people think. In fact, Vegans have many options they enjoy eating beans, lentils, rice, seeds, nuts, plant based milk, and numerous other products Many people are biased and uneducated about veganism They tend to think that Vegans do not have a proper diet, do not get necessary nutrients, lack muscle, and body development, etc. However, as mentioned, Vegans have plenty of choices and therefore consume necessary nutrients. Through today's technology, there are numerous ways to replace animal products

Charlotte Coßmann
Page 18 THE ISSUE - November 2022
Vegan food

A vegan diet also is beneficial for one ’ s health, as one does not consume unhealthy animal fats or cholesterol It helps people at risk of heart disease or cancer. Through their diet, they reduce carbon emissions, which adds positively to the environment The meat industry utilizes loads of water for the production of meat, animals go extinct, and CO2 is being released into the environment. Many animals are kept in small spaces and are given antibiotics to avoid them getting sick, humans will, when eating meat, automatically take in the antibiotics This risk is cut out of a vegan diet, which demonstrates more health advantages.

All in all, veganism is the consumption of non animal products, including more than just fruits and vegetables, which most of the time not only benefits the health but also the environment

The World's Fastest Car - Koenigsegg Jesko

The Koenigsegg Jesko Absolute is a rather new car design released to the public in 2021. It is the brother of the Koenigsegg Jesko but has quite a few major differences The new car is purchasable for 2 8 million dollars, and has a top speed of 531km/h! Because of its top speed, it beats the current fastest car, the Bugatti

What makes it so fast?

The Jesko houses a 0.5 liter twin turbocharged V8 engine with a power output of 1281hp with an rpm of 7800 and has a torque rpm of 6170. It has an in house developed 9 speed multi clutch transmission, called light speed transition, which allows for the car to shift in under 20 to 30 milliseconds. The car has triplex dampers in the front and rear suspension, the rear damper prevents the car from being pressed into the ground and the front provides extreme stability at high speeds

Page 20 THE ISSUE - November 2022
Koenigsegg Jesko Absolute side view

The most obvious difference between the two cars is the back of the cars the absolute is primarily built for super high speeds and comfort; therefore, it has the two fins, as its speed stabilizers that allow for a stable drive with minimal drag The attack Jesko is primarily built for track races, it does this better as it has more downforce and therefore has two of the triplex dampers to cope with the extra downforce

The Absolute

The Jesko Absolute is the high speed version of the Jesko, the fins amble the reduction of downforce without a drag coefficient of (Cd=0.278). The side winglets are removed and the front louvers are smoother, the back wheels also have removable covers on them

What is the Purpose of Wigs in Court?

wn historical figures n is that they always expression But did l purpose of people ack of hygiene and rial infection usually d by sexual contact?

he late 16th century of people in Europe he symptoms is hair ritish wigs was that Louis XIV of France disguised his prematurely balding scalp (historians believe it was caused by syphilis) by wearing a wig. This trend was widely followed by the European upper and middle class Wearing wigs not only highlighted their noble status but it was also easier to make their hair healthier because lice would attack the fake hair instead of the actual hair.

At that time, the style of British wigs was indeed deeply influenced by the French trend The larger the wig, the nobler the owner; therefore, the wig of a senior judge would not only cover the judge's head and face, but it also covered the neck and even hung down to the chest

Until today, British lawyers still follow the tradition of wearing wigs, which is considered a symbol of power and respect for the law In fact, not wearing a wig is perceived as an insult to the courts. British lawyers and judges wear wigs to portray their formality in the courtroom and to pay homage to legal history

International Men's Day

International Men's day is celebrated on the 19th of November every year It is a global holiday, that is honored to recognize the cultural, political, and socioeconomic achievements of men. The objective of International Men's day is to celebrate the lives of boys and men, and their contributions, in particular, their contributions to the nation, union, society, community, family, marriage, and childcare But the Ultimate aim of the event is to promote basic awareness of men's issues.

In its early background, the call for International Men's day had been noted since at least the 1960s The first attempts at inaugurating International Men's Day were recorded to be in the year 1990; however, it was not completely put into action. Later it was put into action by Thomas Oaster on 7 February 1992. The original date for international men's day was going to be the 23 of February to the equivalent of the 8 of March, which is International Women's day However, the Soviet Union had its Red Army and Navy day on the 23 of February, so it was moved to the 19 of November.

The six pillars are: promoting positive male role models: not just movie stars and sportsmen but everyday, working class men who live decent, honest lives. To celebrate men's positive contributions to society, community, family, marriage, and child care To focus on men's health and well being: social, emotional, physical, and spiritual. To highlight discrimination against men in areas of social services, social attitudes, and expectations To improve gender relations and promote gender equality. To create a safer, better world, where people can be safe and grow to reach their full potential

Fifa World Cup

The FIFA World Cup 2022 will be hosted in Qatar in November of this year Qatar vs Ecuador will be played on the 20th of November in Al Bayt Stadium, as the first game. This is the first time the competition will be held in the winter period, as it is normally played during the summer break from clubs.

Many football fans will not watch the World Cup, as the stadiums, they will be playing in were built in poor working conditions leading to over 15,000 people dying while working there. This also means that this World Cup could give less money to FIFA But even though many are watching, the views that could come in would be staggering at around 5 Billion views The number of people that will not be watching is estimated to be only 250 Million people

Many football fans are hoping for the Final to be Argentina vs Portugal as it will decide who is better Messi or Ronaldo. Both will be playing their last World Cup and competition this year This World Cup will also be the last for other big players, such as Neymar, Neuer, Lewandowksi, Giroud, and many more. Some new players will be able to play for the first time in the World Cup featuring Tchoaumeni, Pedri, and Raphael Leao

Our predictions for the group stages winners are: Group A: Netherlands, Senegal / Group B: England, USA / Group C: Argentina, Poland / Group D: France, Denmark / Group E: Spain, Germany / Group F: Belgium, Croatia / Group G: Brazil, Switzerland / Group H: Portugal, Uruguay We predict that the Final of the 2022 World Cup will be between Belgium vs Portugal and it will end 2:2 (Penalties: 4 5), leading Portugal to take the trophy home!

How Kanye West Ruined his Image and Hurt Millions Simultaneously

Since the Paris Fashion Week 2022, which started on the 26th of September and lasted until the 4th of October, an enormous storm of protests against Kanye West began He is criticized for anti semitism and racist statements.

Everything started at the Paris Fashion Week on October 3rd, where Kanye West, Candace Owens, and one model wore shirts with the printing “White Lives Matter”. This statement is associated with a Neo Nazi group, that named themselves this way as a response to the Black Lives Matter movement (BLM). In an interview with Fox News, on October 6th, he also demonstrates his pro life opinion by wearing an ultrasound photo around his neck.

Throughout October his social media accounts get blocked multiple times due to anti semitic and other problematic statements and posts. Multiple news and television programs took down or announced not to air interviews with West Later on, CNN reports the rapper wanted to name his 2018 album after Adolf Hitler, and other people close to Kanye West claimed he had an obsession with Hitler.

Not only are these statements very problematic and hurt many people, but they also ruined West’s image completely Due to his problematic statements, Kanye West lost his deal with Adidas and many other companies. Adidas also announced they would stop production of the Yeezy line. Before losing the Adidas deal, Forbes estimated Kanye’s worth was $2 billion; however, after the loss, his worth is estimated to be $400 million taking him off the Forbes Billionaires List

Capybaras - the Cutest Animal in the World

Jit, Agapi

Capybaras, or Hydrochoerus Hydrochaeris if you want to be sciency, are rodents who are close relatives of guinea pigs and rock cavies, native to South America They are absolutely adorable just look at them. Their big barrel body and short hair, their reddish brown fur that becomes yellow brown on the bottom. The definition of adorable They’re also big and cuddly Capybaras are 106 cm to 134 cm in length, 50 to 62 cm in height, and weigh up to 66 kg

And don’t worry, they’re herbivores who eat grass, aquatic plants, fruits, and tree bark So they won’t eat you, it’s safe Sadly, it’s really hard to find them in Germany, they’re only really in savannas or dense forests near water bodies They really like water, they even sleep in it, with their cute little noses poking out of the surface. Don’t you just want to boop it? The capybara species is friendly, nice, and social with each other, and can be found in groups of 10 20 individuals Some can even be found in groups as large as 100 individuals quite a crowd!

Capybaras are like kangaroos, their hind legs are slightly stronger than their forelegs. So needn't worry, they couldn't beat you in a boxing match even if they wanted to Sadly they only live 8 to 10 years, 4 years in the wild Death is truly the most horrible thing Now some horrible people even look at that cute thing and think, “ can I eat that?”. So it’s often hunted for its meat and hide and also for the fat and grease from its skin. Hopefully, all that convinced you that capybaras are the cutest animal in the universe

Brain Food

Daniel: Nothing happens.

Jo: Nothing because it is immovable

Jonas: The unstoppable force is stopped.

Lukas: It will just create a big heat bubble around it and it will not move at all

Milan: The unstoppable force would transform its kinetic energy into a different kind of energy, most likely heat, causing the immovable object and the atmosphere around it to heat up very rapidly, likely killing most living things nearby

Neco: Nothing will happen, so there will be a paradox between the immovable object and unstoppable force.

What happens when an immovable object meets an unstoppable force?
