Important stuff Top priority.

Official IB/IGCSE Exams Masha Kolot Very soon, the official IGCSE and IB exams are going to start. The IGCSE exams will take place between the 18th of March and the 8th of June. Students are going to be examined in Mathematics, German (A or B), English, Sciences, History, and Geography or Spanish. Currently, our students are already successfully done with their Spanish and German oral exams. Omar, one of our IGCSE students, feels very anxious but confident about the upcoming exams. To prepare, he goes through past papers, makes notes and flashcards, and studies for 30 minutes every day in Kognity. Ms. Maria, the IGCSE coordinator, says that she feels very excited about the exams since she is sure that all our students are going to pass and do great in them.

The official IB exams are going to take place between April 29th and May 20th. IB examination will depend on subjects that students have chosen at the beginning of their first year of the IB program. These include Mathematics, Biology or Chemistry, Business Management/History or Geography, one language A, one language B, and another subject of their choice. To study, students solve past paper questions and use tools like Kognity and Revisionvillage. Mr. Joe, the IBDP coordinator, says that our IB students have prepared as much as they could and at this point, it is all about making sure that they make sure that they use all the tools that they have been studying over the past two years.

A New Beginning Jonas Gesing & Christina Lamprecht

Recently, the SY’s art class welcomed Ms. Joy as their new teacher. To let the community get to know her better, we’ve gathered the thoughts of both the art students and their new teacher.

Before coming to IS Ruhr, Ms. Joy was a visual arts high school teacher, she taught as a special education teacher for many years. She’s said that ever since a young age, she had always wanted to become an artist. Because of this, it makes sense that, even when she didn’t work as a teacher, she followed careers such as photography for fashion and products.

Now, at IS Ruhr, she noted that she found staff and students to be “extremely welcoming”. The school is much smaller than what she had previously experienced, which she noted as a welcoming change. Regarding her art class, she called the students “highly engaged, full of ideas and questions about their own environment and the wider community and the world”. She was impressed by their willingness to help each other.

The students themselves have been getting along with Ms. Joy. Jit from Grade 9 appreciates her patience and kindness, while Vivian also from Grade 9 says that she gives input but also lets you make progress yourself. Currently, the students are working on screen printing, which they find to be very exciting.

Ms. Joy pointed out that there are many talented art students in our SY. She was impressed with the quality and creativity behind their artworks but mentioned that they need to work on unlocking those talents to their full potential. “Be patient, persistent, and have a goal. We all make mistakes in life and in art class, but everything can be resolved,” she reassured. We look forward to the developments of SY’s art class, and welcome Ms. Joy to IS Ruhr!

Mother Tongues in the EY Christina Lamprecht

Mother Language Day falls on the 21st of February, and has its origins in that Bangladeshi people fought for the recognition of the Bangla language. Nowadays, it is associated with celebrating multilingualism and different cultural experiences. Especially at a school like ours, this is a lovely celebration for kids at a young age to help them strengthen their identities.

EY1-3 celebrated by sharing their different mother tongues. Using a service called Toddle, everyone was able to record voicemails of themselves speaking in their native language. In EY1 and EY2, 11 different languages were shared among the 21 kids involved: Hindi, German, English, Turkish, Arabic, Spanish, Catalan, Italian, Albanian, Russian, and Swahili. Some of these kindergarten kids speak 3 languages already. The EY3 kids wrote their names in their respective languages.

Holidays like this are a great opportunity for young kids to understand their own backgrounds better, as well as those of their classmates.

Ramadan

participate in. It is a month when people fast during the day, in order to take time and center their god. It is an especially holy month in which everyone closely studies the Quran and learns from what it tells. During the day, the fasting people do not eat, drink and have to waive any other indulgences such as smoking. Prepubescent children, the elderly, those who are physically/mentally incapable of it, pregnant people, breastfeeding parents and travelers are exempt from fasting, among others. Though not everyone participates, it can still be enjoyable. Some participants feel as if it brings their family closer by the end of the day, since, from sunset to sunrise, they are allowed to eat together with their family. Many people get excited for Ramadan before it even starts because of this stronger sense of family, and the possibility to get closer to their religion. Ramadan is also accompanied by a festival known as Eid al Fitr (it has many names like Bayram, Ramazan Bayramı, Eid al-Adha, Eid, etc.), which takes place right before and right after Ramadan. It is celebrated with presents and a meeting up with your family.

March and April have a lot of special and important events. This article explains these important days briefly.

Alexander Graham Bell was the inventor of the telephone. He was born in the United Kingdom and his birthday is celebrated on the 3rd of March.

The idea to make an electric telephone struck him when he was on a visit to the United States of America.

Saint Patrick's day is celebrated on the 17th of March every year. It is celebrated because of the death of Saint Patrick and turned from a holiday to a tradition. Dancing, street parades and, most importantly, wearing green are part of the celebrations.

World Poetry Day is celebrated on the 21st of March.

Its purpose is to promote the reading, writing, publishing and teaching of poetry throughout the world. Schools usually organize events like poetry writing competitions or poetry reading.

Fresh water is one of the most precious gifts for humans. Even though water is widely available, fresh water is considered scarce. World Water Day is celebrated on the 22nd of March to highlight the importance of fresh water. The citizens are informed more about conserving water and how to keep it clean. Many organizations take part actively in informing more people about this day.

April Fool’s Day is celebrated on the 1st of April every year. It is celebrated by pranking and fooling around with different people. You can reveal the prank by shouting out ´April Fools´. However, this is not considered a public holiday in most of the countries around the world.

The world recognises the 2nd of April as World Autism Awareness Day. This day aims to raise awareness on the Autism Spectrum Disorder. On this day, many Autism organizations join together to help build a better life for the autistic people and to move all the obstacles that are faced by people with autism. The UN decides various themes that help many people understand about the problems that are faced by autistic people and ways to solve them.

Good Friday is a tradition celebrated on the 15 of April this year and usually changes every year. It is a day where Christians commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus and his death located at Calvary. It is celebrated during the holy week.

World Book Day is celebrated on the 23rd of April. It is an annual event that is organized by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization). Its purpose is to solely promote reading by all communities around the world.

Birthday page Three students of the journalism class celebrated their birthdays in March and April.

We want to sincerely thank all of them for participating amazingly and being a huge help with our process of creating articles. The first birthday was the 1st of March. The student takes a big part in our ability to publish anything, so we want to thank him.

Apart from journalism, he is an outstanding Math student, who is always ready to help others. A giant thank you to the next student, who’s birthday was on the 29th of March. He is amazing with management, and makes sure that everyone can work well. In his free time, he enjoys engaging with cow content or (happily) studying for Math tests/exams. Lastly, a student celebrated her birthday on the 2nd of April. She greatly helps with our school’s yearbook. You may recognize her from her last year’s outstanding potato drawings that filled the newsletter with joy. When she’s not working, she is a dedicated FitX member and poet. Happy birthday to all these members of the Journalism club!

Poetry Day in School Eashan Vineed and Hadi Mhanna

World Poetry Day is celebrated to promote the reading, writing, publishing, and teaching of poetry throughout the world. It is celebrated on the 21st of March. People around the world make poems to understand the different difficulties and perspectives of people.

This year our school celebrated World Poetry Day by hosting a poetry competition. There was no theme for the poems. All the students in the school participated with hopes of winning. Each class held a poll for the best poem. The best poem from each class was later sent to the competition. The competition had two categories: one for Grades 6 to 8, one for Grades 9 to 12. The winner for the younger category was a student from Grade 7 and the runner-up was Linnea (Grade 6). The poems written by them were about racism. The second category for the older students was won by Eya (Grade 9) and the runner-ups were Adrian and Agastya (Grade 10). The poems written by them were about peace and harmony.

The winner and runner-up were awarded an Amazon gift card and a certificate. Poetry is helpful for students as they can express their emotions in a controlled way. It also helps develop literacy skills because poems usually use important language details.

7th Grade’s Poem The 7th graders’ English teacher, Ms. Kelly, organized a competition for the class about who could write the best poem to be published in The Issue. Our team voted, and although it was very close, this is the winning poem!

Today is Onam, the annual hindu Harvest festival for Keralites.

We joyfully prepare for king Mahabali´s visit, Wearing new dresses we sit.

The loud crackling sound of the sparkling and glittering fireworks fill the air.

Our house, neatly decorated like a bouquet of colourful flowers, welcomes the king for a wonderful feast.

Everyone sits in front of their television, Excited to see all the fun.

Everyone enjoys the boat races and folk dances.

Everything to entertain yourself for the day.

The skilled performers delight us with their wonderful dances.

The oarsmen paddle the boat with all their might and sing magnificent songs of our land.

Loads of delicious delicacies fill the table.

We sit with our growling stomachs, For the wonderful feast, That melts in our mouth.

A colourful pattern of flowers is laid in front of our house, The flowers smile back at us excited to welcome the king.

It’s Holi Sreeja Prasanna Kumar Every year on March 18th, the festival of colours is celebrated, Holi. It is a Hindu festival that is celebrated all over India and also around the world. Many children gather around with their friends to celebrate its beauty. It has a great backstory and it is all about fun.

Many might know Holi as it is, but not everyone knows its history: It all begins with Hiranyakashipu, who was an evil king who wanted everybody to obey his orders and worship him. He was so cruel that he killed or punished everyone who disobeyed him.

However, he had a son, Prahlad, who was sneaky, but better than him, and instead of Hiranyakashipu, he worshiped Lord Vishnu. Hiranyakashipu did not like this, and being a cruel man as he is, he planned on killing Prahlad. The evil king asked his sister, Holika, for help. She planned on tricking Prahlad into a fire because she had a magic cloak that would protect her. Holika was using her cloak’s powers for evil deeds, so in the fire, the cloak flew up and covered Prahlad instead of Holika. Prahlad was saved and free and his evil father was later defeated by Lord Vishnu. Noticed something? Holika, yes, Holi comes from her name.

Holi is not just about the colours, it is the festival of Love. Some say that it celebrates the eternal love of Radha and Krishna, others believe that it was the Hiranyakashipu myth.

What do you think?

Holi is celebrated with great joy and happiness. On the first night, people light bonfires, throw chickpeas, roasted grains, coconut, and even popcorn onto each other! The next day, the fun just gets more fabulous, when everyone throws coloured powder, paint, or coloured water at each other, with no age restrictions. Children also carry around small instruments called “Pichkari” to help them spray coloured water. Loud music is played, especially Bollywood Holi-based songs like “Balam Pichkari” and “Cham, cham, cham”.

Overall, Holi is an amazing festival that has an interesting backstory and witty celebration, like throwing popcorn at each other, how fun is that; and also colour… like a lot of it.

Sreeja: Someone just listed out random sounds, like aaa when a person screamed,

beee, they mistook it instead of mehhee, when the goats made sounds, and then they thought just gave them some character, they didn’t like the number 4 so they changed it to A to represent Ahhhhh. Then 4 times 2 equals 8, so since Bahhh and eight shouldn’t be identical, they made B. Then it just went on, C, they wanted it to be simple and Z like a zigzag because they saw kids draw zig zags with sticks earlier that day.

Christina: Ehm… someone felt that the sound “O” sounded like how a circle would

created it.

Mia: People in Greece were bored so they threw lines at each other and bam!

April Revolution Sreeja Prasanna Kumar The April revolution was a massive movement that took place in South Korea to defeat the corruption of the then government. It started on March 15 and ended on April 26, 1960. Two events caused the revolution.

Syngman Rhee became elected as the president of South Korea for the 4th time in a row, at this time he was 84 years old and bedridden. The Rhee government was corrupt, it had stubborn and unfair leaders and members. Syngman Rhee wanted his protégé, Lee Ki Poong, to be elected as Vice President. Lee’s opposition was Chang Myon who was the ambassador of the United States during the Korean War and a member of the opposite Democratic Party.

On March 15, 1960, an election took place, Lee won the vote, but it was claimed to be dishonest because there was a big gap between the vote numbers: Lee received 8,225,000 votes while Chang Myon only received 1,850,000 votes. On the same day, in the southern city of Masan, members of the opposing Democratic Party gathered to protest against electoral corruption. A lot of people supporting that statement joined them; however, police forces began shooting and throwing rocks at them. Reports made after that said that democratic rallies were prevented during the whole election process and most of the pre-marked ballots were filled into boxes on election day.

On April 11, 1960, a local fisherman found the dead body of a high school student, Kim Ju-Hyul, who had gone missing during the riots of March 15. The autopsy said that the death was caused due to drowning and an oversized grenade entering his skull. President Rhee’s officials tried to cover up this incident; however, the story was reported by the Korean Press along with the first sighting of the boy’s body.

This news shocked the entire nation causing a protest to spread to Seoul, on the 18th of April.

Students from many universities and some high schools marched towards the Blue House, the Korean parliament, and called for Rhee’s resignation. Protesters created a national movement against electoral corruption on the 19th. Police forces killed about 180 protesters and wounded thousands of people. Mass protests in Masan occurred that led to further violence from the police.

President Rhee tried to change the topic by claiming the communist agents were the planners of the Masan protests. On April 25, many professors, along with soldiers and police who refused to attack the protests also joined. On April 26, having no choice left, president Rhee gave up his throne and his protégé, Lee Ki-Pong was blamed for most of the corruption in the government.

The April Revolution was a tiring incident, it killed a lot of people, brought dissatisfaction, anger, trouble, and tension. It was basically a great struggle, but it was all worth it, as the Rhee government gave up due to it.

Carnival at IS-Ruhr Jonas Gesing Carnival is a catholic traditional celebration, celebrated before the season of Lent. During Lent, Christians celebrate the 40 days Jesus spent fasting in the desert. Carnival typically involves public celebrations, such as parades or public parties. People who visit such parties typically dress up. This tradition was created by people who wanted to enjoy their last days before having to fast for 40 days without being recognized.

As every year, the students of IS-Ruhr have celebrated carnival in school too. However, this year, students could not celebrate together; instead, classes had to celebrate separately in their classrooms. Despite this, students still had a lot of fun.

In the PY classes, students celebrated carnival but also learned about its history. Grade 2 students for example learned about carnival-related activities and shared their stories about them. Students also talked about costumes, dressed up themselves, and received candy. Grade 2s even learned about how to make masks and made some of their own. They were encouraged to be creative and use their imagination to decorate their masks. They decided on the materials and ways of how they would like to decorate the masks. Through this activity, they shared their thinking behind the colors and decorations they used which connects to their current unit 'How we express ourselves’.

Afterward, some students used the masks they had created in their costumes.

In SY students dressed up too. During the weeks before the carnival party students were allowed to decide on what to do during their party in their coaching class. Some classes played games, others watched a movie and others just dressed up and enjoyed themselves.

Why your Favourite Author is a Maniac Adrian Ehrenbeck

Literature plays a huge role in our lives. Despite advances in technology, books continue to be an effective tool when it comes to furthering our own learning, but can also tell melancholic, entertaining or thrilling stories to tickle our brains. Nevertheless, it is just as exciting to look into the figures who wrote these works and the hilarious, odd and insane lives some of them lived.

A great example of this is William S. Burroughs (1914-1997), author of well known books such as “Naked Lunch” or “Junkie.” Other writers have described him as “the only American novelist…who may conceivably be possessed by genius.” Until he was 50, he received an allowance from his grandfather and during adulthood became addicted to heroin. This leads to all sorts of crazy habits and stories developing. Sources claim he would spend up to 8 hours looking at his shoe and would go a long time without changing his clothes, spending an entire year without taking a bath once. Burroughs' life was also shaped by a bunch of magical beliefs. He would try to identify visions in everyday objects (a process called scrying) and curse the people who displeased him.

In modern English classes, one of the most studied authors is Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849). He is most famous for short stories and poems like “The Raven” and “Annabel Lee” and lived a relatively short life, his cause of death not being known, however speculations include alcoholism and disease. In 1844 he wrote a piece for the New York Sun, discussing how a man had flown a balloon from England to South Carolina in just 75 hours. Despite using scientific terminology to back his claim, the editors soon found out that it was a hoax and 2 days after publication, a statement was issued retracting the story. Poe also had an arch rival, Rufus Griswold, whom he frequently attacked, criticising his work. After Poe’s death, Griswold displayed him as “an unhinged maniac” in an obituary and published a biography on Poe where he depicted him as a drunk, who was severely drug-addled. This just shows how far their rivalry had gone and Poe had published papers where he slammed Griswold’s work.

The third and final figure is perhaps the most known: Philosopher and author Immanuel Kant (1724-1804). Even today, his work is still studied and appreciated by many, but what few people know is that his life was a lot more interesting than you’d think. For example, sources claim he never travelled more than 10-40 miles away from his home in Königsberg (now Kaliningrad). He also had a string running from his bed to his bathroom in order for him to find his way there without being forced to light a candle to see. He was not a very tall man, barely reaching five feet and was banned from writing about religion by the king of Prussia. Despite being an intellectual, Kant often defied today's stereotype as he frequently went to parties, drank large amounts of wine and played billiards.

These 3 authors lived a much different life than what one might expect. Nevertheless, it is important to note that alcohol and drugs played a role in their lives and a possible reason for their quirks could be the effects of these. However, it is also recommended to study some of their works, as they have produced pieces that advanced humanity’s understanding of their respective field/language. Who would have thought the famous individuals behind these works had such entertaining backstories.

Deaf History Month Mia Mbalisike Deaf History Month is celebrated from March 13th to April 15th of every year.

What is being deaf/hard of hearing?

When a person is deaf or hard of hearing they are not able to hear, or have a lot of difficulty hearing. This can be a disability that people are born with, but can be developed as well. An example of developing it is the eldery, who often develop hearing difficulty.

How many people are affected by this?

Over 5% of the world’s population are known to be deaf or hard of hearing (D/HH), so a lack of knowledge about this topic could affect multiple hundreds of million people, as well as awareness and allyship can.

How can we achieve a start to a journey of allyship and accessibility?

There are many things you can do to be an ally for the deaf and hard of hearing community.

Closed captions. This is important and prominent on social media. When you post something that has a sound, it can help greatly to write closed captions. Closed captions are captioning of a sound or words. You can see this in Youtube videos, as the symbol of “CC”.

When they are turned on, you will see written captions of what is being said following along the video. Doing this on your own posts helps D/HH people understand the context of something, if the sound is crucial to understanding, as well as making them feel less alienated.

Understand that there are different degrees of being D/HH. Every single D/HH person has a different story of growing up, relationship to deafness, knowledge of sign language and more. Just as everyone else, deaf people are individuals that aren’t identical to each other.

Don’t assume what D/HH people can do, on either end. Do not assume that every person can lipread, but don’t assume that every person needs help. You wouldn’t do the same for hearing people, so do not do it for D/HH people either.

Doing research about the topic and acknowledging what D/HH people tell you is a way to be an ally. Acknowledging the statements of people in the community is a step to better allyship.

It lets affected people feel heard and validated, while one's own understanding will advance from direct opinions and tellings.

Another way can be learning basic sign language to communicate better with the D/HH community. In order to do this, research is also necessary, since many different sign languages exist. Taking classes in sign language and attending functions with many deaf people (as long as it is not an invasion of safe spaces) are effective ways to learn it. This can assist with the previous point, since it can improve the convenience of communication for the people you are trying to communicate with.

Advocating and protesting in favor of accessibility. When you notice D/HH people speak out about something important, speak out about it as well without overpowering their own voices.

Protesting alongside affected people and spreading awareness by referencing the D/HH community is an effective way to assist in knowledge increase.

Be aware of your ableism. The society we grow up in is very ableist, teaching people stereotypes, slurs and more from a young age. By tackling that issue and learning enough to be able to notice ableism against D/HH people quickly, you can be a better ally than when saying things without understanding that they are ableist.

Avoid misconceptions and stereotypes of the D/HH communities, since they don’t apply to everyone. D/HH people don’t owe you answers. Even if you are trying to learn something in order to be an ally, they do not owe you anything. Do not expect them to answer all of your questions, their existence is not for educating, but merely for existing.

Lastly, understand that this article was written by a hearing person. Deaf people might share these opinions, disagree, or have more to add on, so take their word over those of hearing people.

Women’s History Month Mia Mbalisike Similar to many other minorities, women’s achievements have been heavily abandoned, and stripped of acknowledgment throughout history, though there have been many influential women with amazing actions. This is why March is women’s history month. Women have been a great part of building the world as we know it today and would’ve been an even bigger part if they weren’t constantly held back.

Women have so many different fields of specialization they can be great in.

Examples of women in politics: Angela Merkel, the first woman to have ever been elected to be the chancellor in Germany. She worked in this position from the 22nd November 2005 till December 18th of 2021. Many people liked her, while others disliked her, nevertheless this was a huge progress for women who want to be in politics.

Kamala Harris is the first vice president of the United States who is a woman. Before, there were only men serving in her current position. She has been the vice president since 2020 and was inaugurated to be incumbent in 2021.

LaDonna Harris is another woman in politics, who was the first Native American to have run for vice president in the United States. She was the wife of the US Senator.

Examples of women in social justice movements: Susan B. Anthony was a woman that believed in equality between all genders. She was an early feminist, who was a crucial helper of the women’s suffrage movement. When she was as young as 17, she collected anti-slavery petitions and became the New York state agent for the American anti-slavery society.

Claudette Colvin was a woman, whose actions were ignored till years later. She sat down on a bus during segregation in America in order to protest against the bus rules. Her action was not acknowledged till 9 months later when Rosa Parks did the same and was praised instead of Colvin, who did it first. She was not credited.

Grace Lee Boggs was a writer, social activist, philosopher, and feminist. In her 100 years of living, she wrote 8 books, one of the rather popular ones being “The Next American Revolution: Sustainable Activism for the Twenty-First Century”. She is regarded as one of the most influential women in the Asian American movement.

Examples of famous women: Jacqueline Charlotte Dufresnoy, who was better known by her stage name Coccinelle, was a French actress. She appeared in movies like European Nights, Los viciosos, Beach Casanova, Días de viejo color and Mondo inferno.

She also sang more than 20 songs in her lifetime which were popular, as she was.

Megan Thee Stallion is one of the rather well-known female rappers, who are internationally famous.

Something that isn’t well known about her is that she is also an academic. Next to her music career, she pursued her plan of going to university and getting a degree. She was successful in this, while still being a popular rapper.

Stella Young was an Australian comedian, journalist, and activist that focused on disability rights, with her being disabled herself. Her talking often focused on or mentioned her disability because disability is nothing strange to be frowned upon, but something that should be able to be mentioned without it being necessarily serious or bad. She went to have a TED talk, telling people that disabled people weren’t anyone’s inspiration, but normal people that should be treated normally.
