Annually in June, Pride Month is celebrated to honor the Stonewall Uprising of 1969.

Pride Month celebrates the LGBTQ+ community and its members. Today, Pride Month is celebrated with pride parades, parties, and protests. In Germany, ‘CSD’ (Christopher Street Day) parades are held in many big cities. The CSD hosted in Berlin

Members of the LGBTQ+ that had been lost due to hate crimes or violence are also remembered every Pride Month. The first Pride Month event was held in New York City on the 28th of June 1970 for the oneyear anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising.

What were the Stonewall riots?

The Stonewall Uprising happened in the USA. Many Queer bars back then were involved with the mafia/criminals, which gave the

community an even worse chance of acceptance, besides the already severe levels of homo-/transphobia. On the 28th of June 1969, the police raided the Stonewall bar by making everyone line up and checking if the people presenting themselves a certain way had the genitalia asscociated with that sex. If this was not the case, that was followed by immediate arrest. Many of the female people who presented themselves as such were sexually assulted by officers.

Most people were let off the hook and brought outside, but instead of leaving, they formed a giant crowd instead, watching everything go down. One woman was escorted to a police wagon, but repeatedly fought and escaped the wagon, as well as taking on 4 officers while still being in handcuffs. While struggling against the aggressors, she desperately asked why nobody was doing anything. This was the point where the crowd became a mob and escalation began. Various crowd members were injured, but also managed to injure four officers. More nights of rioting followed, with justice being seeked, though not everyone got it. The rioting was celebrated a year later on the 28th of June in 1970, as the first pride event which later developed into pride month.

Marsha P. Johnson Marsha P. Johnson was an LGBTQ+ activist who is still seen as an iconic figure who helped the stone wall upbringing greatly and did many things in favor of the Queer community. Marsha showed no remorse for the aggressors and went as far climbing a lamp post and dropping bricks onto police cars in order for them to shatter, so they could not escape the fight and/or negotiate. Though this is the most remarkable thing that she is known for, she was also involved in the community during both pre- and post- riots. She marched the very first pride rally, which would later become an annual thing.

What does LGBTQ+ stand for?

The LGBTQ+ community is a large community of people who do not solely identify themselves as heterosexual (one only being attracted to the opposite gender) or cisgender (identifying as the gender one was given at birth). A lot of different sexualand gender identities belong to the LGBTQ+ community. LGBTQ+ is an acronym for Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and Queer, or questioning. All of those terms describe a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity.

A person identifying as Lesbian is a non-man only attracted to non-men, meaning it is a form of homosexuality. Someone identifying as gay is a non-woman only attracted to non-women, so this is also a label of homosexuality. A bisexual person is attracted to two or more genders. One might identify as transgender, if they do not identify with their gender assigned at birth. A Queer person is someone who is not heterosexual or cisgender.

There are many more labels people of this community can identify with. Some examples are asexuality (having little to no sexual attraction) or aromantic (having little to no romantic attraction). There are whole spectrums under those two terms. Nonbinary, another spectrum, means one identifying as neither strictly male nor strictly female.

different ones).

How can you be an ally to the community?

An ally is someone who helps lift up the LGBTQ+ community. Allies play an important role in the LGBTQ+ community as they help create a space for everyone to be themselves. Creating more spaces as such helps LGBTQ+ members gain confidence and stand up against discrimination. A simple step to being an ally is making yourself familiar with the basic terms and definitions used in the LGBTQ+ community. Another important part of an ally is listening to members of the LGBTQ+ community.

Avoid misgendering and deadnaming people and respect and use their preferred pronouns. Some people use neo pronouns (for example xe/xem/xyr or ze/hir/hirs), so it is helpful to be familiar with the usage of those.

Examples of how to use these pronouns are: He is nice / Xe is nice / Ze is nice We should respect them / We should respect xem / We should respect hir Her pronouns are cool / Xyr pronouns are cool / hirs pronouns are cool Another thing, often tied to this, though they are vastly different, is the use of xenogenders and xenopronouns, which is often used by neurodivergent people. Some might feel connected to certain concepts or objects with their gender, leading them to use nounself pronouns that are often misunderstood or viewed as strange. Commonly used examples are “cat” or “starself” pronouns. Their usage is fairly simple, since most noun pronouns follow the same pattern.

Interviews We were able to interview some Queer students, asking them multiple questions. First we asked which importance pride month had to them.

The answer had variety. Some of them felt strongly about it, saying it was very important to them, while others had a rather neutral opinion.

Some of the reasons why it was so important to them were that it gives space for representation, being yourself and coming out, as well as educating and spreading awareness.

They agreed that there can be a lot of ignorance towards the LGBTQ+ community, but that it can come in different forms. Ignorance leads to mistakes or even purposeful actions like misgendering or mocking trans people, or

thinking that there is only homo or hetero and immediately equating homosexuals to AIDS because of that.

Allies are important to the community and from the perspective of the community this is about, an ally needs to have certain requirements.

These requirements are just generally accepting and respecting the community, which is common sense, additionally to taking action through education or donation, since support can’t just come from empty words, allowing people to truly be themselves around you, showing that they can trust you, and not being a situational ally. This means that you should not suddenly become homo-/transphobic if a Queer person does something you dislike. If your allyship is dependent on if you like someone or not, you are not a real ally.

We also asked how many labels there are. All agreed that there are a bunch of labels, some even saying that they could be infinite. In their opinion there are enough existent labels to explain exactly what you feel, no matter if you want to use the label or not.

Later on there were two trans specific questions that were also kindly answered. The first one was what induces the most dysphoria. Gender dysphoria is a state of uneasiness regarding one's gender. This can range from slight uncomfort to extremely depressing and agitating feelings. It can come both internally and externally. Some feel it because of others misgendering, deadnaming and not accepting them, while others feel it because of their bodies looking a certain way that doesn’t suit what their gender feels like.

When asking the interviewed what caused the most gender dysphoria for them they answered that misgendering and deadnaming had a big part in it. While some said that it made them dysphoric to not be able to fit in with cis people that aligned with their gender because of ignorance, transphobia or not being out, others felt uncomfort because of being shoved into the roles of their assigned sex. On the other hand, some said that their body caused the most dysphoria.

The last question was whether there was much transphobia within the LGBTQ+ community. Some had personal experiences, making them say yes, while others hadn’t experienced as much transphobia from the community.

Important Events in June Eashan Vineed and Hadi Mhanna There are several special and major events in the month of June. This article explains these events briefly.

Father’s Day is celebrated on the 26th of May. On this day, fathers get appreciated because they raised their children. This year it is also a work off day and school because Ascension day is on the same day. Traditionally, fathers have less responsibility than usual on this day.

World Ocean Day is on the 8th of June. It is a day that reminds us humans of the consequences of our actions on the ocean, and how the ocean plays a very big important role in our lives. However, we take this for granted sometimes. The Canadian delegation proposed the idea of showing the ocean love in Rio de Janeiro, however the idea was only brought into action six years later.

World Environment Day is on the fifth of June. It is celebrated to raise awareness of environmental issues such as pollution, global warming, and wildlife crime.

Today over 140 countries participate in celebrating this day. The theme of world environment day is “Only one Earth”.

Albinism Day is celebrated on the 14th of June every year. It is celebrated to respect the human rights of a person with Albinism. Albinism decreases the production of melanin, which is the pigment that gives color to the skin, hair, and eyes is a lifelong condition that also affects vision, but does not get worse over time.

Dove in the sky

Pentecost is a Christian holiday that is celebrated on the 50th day from Easter Sunday. It celebrates the gift of the Holy Spirit. Pentecost comes from a Jewish festival known as Shavuot. The apostles were celebrating this festival when the holy spirit descended on them. The apostles started speaking in foreign languages, after being motivated by the Holy Spirit. Ministers in the church often wear robes decorated with red as a symbol of the flames in which the Holy Spirit came to Earth. There are several hymns sung on this day too that take the Holy Spirit as the theme.

The Feast of Corpus Christi, also called Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, is celebrated on a Thursday that is 60 days after Easter Sunday. People celebrate this by attending a church, where the sacrament is blessed and then taken around each city by priests and other followers. The people stop at

four different stops in a way that represent the four stops Christ had to make before reaching the cross. The parade continues with singing and prayers and finally ends at a church or public area where service is given to the attendees.

The Arctic - Two Worlds Adrian Ehrenbeck When you think of the Arctic, you may picture gigantic ice caps, adorable penguins, drowsy seals or even orcas who lurk in the surrounding oceans. Yes, all of those exist, but there is a completely different side to the continent, barely touched upon, mysterious, which may guard some of the most unique, exciting, but also frightening secrets.

I’m sure everyone has frozen something before. Whether it’s food or just selfmade ice cubes, it’s a common concept in the modern world, as it is a strong way to preserve all sorts of things.

Nevertheless, freezing is currently being explored more and more as humans are investigating the idea of freezing life and, when thawing it, it coming back to life.

This is a relatively new area which still needs a lot of exploration, however the Arctic may just be the place for science to make large leaps.

Lake Vida

‘Lake Vida’, a body of water with no oxygen, dark, salty and extremely cold is a great example of this. Inside of it, researchers from Nasa found a culture of bacteria. As the lake is mostly frozen, it is estimated that its inhabitants have been isolated from the outside world for over 3,000 years (Nasa). Another team of researchers investigated ice layers that are up to 34-million years old. They too discovered bacteria which have been dated to be around 8 million years old and were able to revive them through incubation at around 4° Celcius, identifying them as Arthrobacter roseus (Bidle).

All this by itself may seem exciting, but there are scary aspects to it. Permanently frozen land in the Arctic is known as Permafrost and estimated to be around (but also more than) 1 million years old. In Siberia’s deep Permafrost, scientists have discovered microorganisms that they identified to be resistant to antibiotics. As the amount of Permafrost decreases (Scientific American says the worst case is that it is gone by 2100), the possibility of these bacteria mixing with meltwater is very much an option (ESA).

Virologist Jean Michael Claverie explains that there are two types of virus, an RNA virus (e.g. Covid-19) and a DNA virus (like smallpox). The first is known to be fragile, making it quite unlikely that it can be brought back from the ice sheets. The latter, on the other hand, provides a more realistic threat.

Overall it is important to put these topics into perspective. There is a large amount of research lacking as the issue has not been explored too much yet and it is nothing you need to worry about just yet. On a more positive note, some thrilling discoveries have come from analysis of the arctic’s ice. At the start of the 1990’s, scientists found dinosaur fossils of the Cryolophosaurus ellioti in the central Transantarctic Mountains of Antarctica and since then we have been on the lookout for more exciting findings. It will be fascinating to see what the future holds for the arctic and the mysteries it guards.

Gaokao Examinations Sreeja Prasanna Kumar The National College Entrance Examination also known as the Gaokao is an entrance exam held annually in China from June 7th to 8th. It is taken by students who wish to gain a higher qualification of education. The exam is a requirement for admission to any college or university at the undergraduate level.

The examination is generally taken by senior students during their last year of high school, however, there is no specific age requirement.

It is undoubtedly one of the hardest examinations in the world. With the pass rate of 0.05%, only 150,000 of the 20 million students taking the exams every year actually get through. Students start preparing for it from the start of elementary school, so about 12 years of preparation. It lasts for about 9 hours in a span of 2 days and consists of extremely complex questions. difficult because many universities have limited spaces, so the exam is supposed to distinguish the top outstanding students from the less outstanding students. This helps universities to easily pick their candidates.

The Gaokao examinations provide a fair chance for students from different backgrounds either rural or urban. It gives all students the opportunity to re-establish their destinies even with the high level of competition to go to top universities or colleges. Therefore, a passionate hardworking high school student living in a village in a vulnerable situation might get the chance to lead a more well-stable life through the Gaokao. The Gaokao provides an opportunity for all students no matter which background the student is from.

Overall, the Gaokao examination is a tough examination taking place in mainland China every year. It has a very low pass rate and requires a lot of preparation and practice, however, it provides an opportunity for all students who wish to attain higher education and standard of living.

Second Semester Exams Sreeja Prasanna Kumar, Eashan Vineed, Hadi Mhanna The second semester exams took place from the 20th of June to the 22nd. In the secondary years, exams are taken twice every year. It is mandatory for every student in SY to take them, as their exam score will be a part of the student’s final grade.

Over the years the influence of the exam score on the final grade increases.

Therefore, for a 6th grade student their exam will only make up 30% of their semester grade but for a 9th grade student they make up 50%. All the exams are monitored by invigilators.

For Grade 9 and 11, the exams were mainly based on what they learned the entire year, meanwhile, the 6th to 8th graders only take their exams based on what they learned that semester. Due to the IGCSE and IB programs, the 10th and 12th graders take their exams based on what they learned the previous year as well, as all this content will be included in their final examinations. Grade 9 and 12 do not have to participate in the second semester exams as they have finished their programs already with their final exams.

Although the exams typically are stressful for the students, they all were happy when this year's exams ended. The days after the exams students received their exam scores and were able to discuss their mistakes with their teachers.

Grade 5 Presenting their Exhibition Jonas Gesing From the 30th of May to the 1st of June, Grade 5 students were able to present their Exhibition presentations to the school community, their friends, and family. Due to COVID-19 regulation, students still had to present virtually through a Google Meet conference. Consequently, all students had prepared a presentation on Google Slides to present their research.

Prior to presenting, most of the students felt nervous. Some students were aware that presenting and talking in front of a group was not one of their strengths, however, they still committed to presenting. Despite being nervous, all students felt excited to show what they had learned.

For future Grade 5s doing their Exhibition, the students recommend starting early and

focusing more on the important things.

Another advice from Grade 5 students was to stay calm while presenting and divert their focus to one person. Lastly, the students also advised to extend their work over a long period of time and to even work at home, so one would not feel overwhelmed.

Although the Exhibition required a lot of hard work, Grade 5 learned a lot. Not only did they learn a lot about their chosen topic, but they also learned about staying committed and keep going. Students also learned how to stay organized and create presentations that were visually appealing.

Overall, the Exhibition was a great experience for PY5 students to improve their independence and organisational skills for future life and the Secondary Years.

A Look into Future Life Jonas Gesing From the 13th to the 24th of June Grade 10 students did their work experience.

The aim of the work experience was to encounter job life and observe possible everyday situations in a certain career.

Through this students, could get an idea of what they want to do in the future and what their dreams are.

People working in different jobs

to decide; however, most spent the entire day or a work shift at their job. During the work experience, students had to write a report on what they did daily, this had to be submitted at the end of the project. During the entire school year of 10th Grade, students were preparing for their work experience: they were writing personal resumes, thinking about which job field would suit them, and applying to jobs.

Grade 10s were exploring a lot of different work fields - some were experiencing work-life at RWE, and others were doing their work experience in the hospital. At their workplace, students were fully involved in the activities. A student working in an integration center (a commune for disabled people) helped care for the residents by assisting them with cooking or cleaning, as well as caring for themselves. In a therapeutic office, a student was involved in conversations with the patient, which she, later on, analyzed with the psychotherapist.

During the work experience, Grade 10s were able to gain a lot of new knowledge.

In addition, the students also enjoyed their work experience. Being involved in the decisions made many become interested in their future. Students also appreciated the relationships they were able to build with their patience, customers, or colleagues.

Aquazoo Fieldtrip Mia Mbalisike On June 1st, the middle school students went on a pleasant field trip to the Aquazoo in Düsseldorf. They were accompanied by their Science teacher, Ms Eleesh who is also the 6th grade coach, and Mr. Tim, the 8th grade coach, with whom they shared their experience of admiring various habitats, from crocodiles to penguins.

The first visible exhibit in the zoo was the large skeleton of a whale which was interesting and evoked quick interest. On the left, speedy penguins can be observed swimming in the water, at times even coming close to the glass, allowing them to be seen closer than usual.

The real journey began on the right side. While coursing through the different habitats, the students filled out a question sheet that Ms. Eleesh had provided them with, in addition to having group meetings to discuss about their gatherings, while still practicing consideration of people around.

A huge variety of animals were present, with some of the students’ favorites being treefrogs, crocodiles, gundis, stingrays, sharks, crabs, and alligators, which the three classes had great fun seeing and learning about.

At most stages, there were texts filled with information about the different types of animals that brought everyone attending a lot of interest and filled knowledge in the curious minds of the students.

Later on, they all took the train and consequently, the tram back to school, the same way they had gotten

Share your Culture Mia Mbalisike During this time of the year, the school year gradually comes to a stop and everyone has to start preparing for the next year - not only the teachers and the students but also the parents as well. The PTA (Parent Teacher Association) combines both of these aspects, allowing parents to play a role in the planning of their children’s celebrations throughout the year. Living in Germany, of course mostly Christian celebrations are thought of, but for the next school year of 2022-2023, they want to create a safe environment for more cultures being celebrated. They are planning to organize a larger variety of celebrations, but cannot do this alone. This is why the PTA is encouraging anyone to join or help. If you have any celebrations you’d like to do next year, feel free to message the members or official PTA team contact, mentioned below. It would be greatly appreciated if you could help the parents and teachers that do their best to make students feel happy and included.

Reward for SY Mia Mbalisike During the last week of school, before the well-deserved summer break, our students of Grade 6 to 11, excluding 10, are granted the opportunity to go on multiple field trips to build teamwork skills as well as rewarding their hard work during the exams previous to that week. This year four fun activities are planned.

On day one the students came to school

as usual, but instead of work, Tree2tree awaited them. After the train and bus, they arrived with great enthusiasm. Each got the proper climbing equipment and was already curiously observing the different possible activities. Once the harnesses and gloves were on, everyone patiently listened to the instructions. The first activity was required to see if all students were confident in the previously given instructions and once that was proven they were free to roam around. Some had to tackle their fear of heights, while others were already more experienced. Overall everyone had a great time and conversed about it after when waiting for the school bus to pick them up. While waiting they were still energetic and had arm-wrestling matches with each other and even a teacher joined in.

On the 28th the adventure continued with everyone going to the Gasometer, a journey through learning about the climate history of the earth. On the first two floors, there were pictures of animals, cities, natural phenomena, and other things, as well as paintings. They strolled around with the mission to photograph them for the following activity they were to complete in school. This was to make an English trailer or brochure because of a lack of English information on the official website. On the third floor, there was an enormous

representation of the earth. It was mesmerizing and many students stayed watching it for a while. They drove back, ate lunch, and then worked on their project.

After those two events, the fun was not over and the coming day was the annual Sports Day on the 29th. Activities like running, jumping, throwing, and more all took part that day. Even though it might have been exhausting to some, it was still amazing. The 4 teams all participated well

and the chosen activities were enjoyable.

The last day and highlight of the amusement was a famous amusement park. Just like last year, the students attended Movie Park with great fun. There were super quick or watery and refreshing roller coasters, candy shops, or delicious meals. The students enjoyed it a lot. Even if not everything is for everyone, they agreed it was fun, because of the variety the Movie Park has.

What shape is the sky?

Jonas: The sky has no shape, as it is not a physical object. The atmosphere; however, has a shape, which is similar to earth’s shape.

Sreeja: The sky has no shape.

Eashan: The sky is considered as a hollow sphere.

Mia: Since what we consider the ‘sky’ is most likely just the atmosphere, I'd say it doesn’t have a clear shape due to just being out of gas.

Hadi: I would say its a sphere Mr Tim Anderson: When referring to the atmosphere, I’d say it’s a sphere that covers the earth.

Ms Jen: It’s like an umbrella or like a sheet that lays over everything.

Ms Eleesh: It is a sphere like the earth, it might be flattened at the top and the bottom. It is just part of the earth’s structure.
