Christmas in EY and PY

As the year is coming to an end, the favorite holiday of some has arrived: Christmas. During December, EY and PY children joined multiple events and the Christmas mood has reached IS Ruhr as well.

On the 2nd of December, the students decorated the Christmas tree In EY children created ornaments to hang on the tree with the help of students from 10th Grade. Colorful and creative decorations were made and their tree truly looks unique. In PY, children decorated the Christmas tree as well They were given time to create tree decorations to have an impressive tree too!

On the 5th of December EY2 and EY3 left their slippers out in the EY center, hoping Nikolaus might visit overnight On the morning of the 6th, all children were amazed when they found chocolate and a puzzle in their shoes To round things off, a breakfast buffet was held together with the parents. The students sang jingle bells and everyone shared delicious food with one another

To spread the joy, children in EY and PY created Christmas cards to give to elderly in Essen, who would spend Christmas alone otherwise Their small texts included in the cards will make somebody happy this Christmas, who does not have family or friends there to visit them The project within our school was organized by Ms. Marie and was initiated by the Deutsche Rote Kreuz

SY Christmas Celebration

After a long year, it is finally the time to spend time with our friends and family, it's Christmas! For Christmas, the Student Council and our wonderful teachers organized a bunch of events including the Christmas market, Kinder Helfen Kindern, and the EY Christmas tree decorations.

Another year of our school community donating to “Kinder Helfen Kinder”, a charity organization that helps children in eastern Europe by giving them gift boxes. The boxes could contain toys, school supplies, hygiene products, and winter accessories, but shouldn't have war toys, toys for children under 3, electronic toys, glass, porcelain, or food The SY donated 67 boxes that were picked up on the 23rd of November.

Christmas is rapidly approaching, and it would not be a real celebration without a decorated Christmas tree! Pompoms, string, yarn, and some popsicle sticks might sound like something you need for an Arts collage. But not for Ms. Cristel who taught grade 10 students how to make some brilliant ornaments, like stars made of yarn and popsicle sticks; pompoms glued onto nutmegs; and bead-sewn strings tied to make shapes The grade 10 student showed EY students what they learned by guiding them to make cute decorations themselves. At the end of the day, the EY Christmas tree shone brightly with some fantastic handmade ornaments made with love and effort

On Friday, December 16th, the SY hosted a Christmas market to raise money for future events Different classes brought different foods and drinks, such as hot chocolate, Kinderpunsch, crepes, waffles, and other sweets The Christmas market was for the entire school to visit, including parents and visitors. There were multiple games to play, such as “Ring the Reindeer”, where you had to throw rings at a person wearing reindeer horns and try to get the rings to hang to the horns, or “Picture with Santa”, where a student dressed up as Santa, and people got to shoot photos with him.

Our community came up with wonderful ways to celebrate Christmas; one, showing empathy by helping the needy by donating gifts; two, giving assistance to someone by helping students make wonderful ornaments; and three, spreading joy by selling delicious items at the Christmas Market. As a result of this, people’s faces were filled with smiles

Nikolaus

Nikolaus Day is a short celebration that happens annually on the 6th of December in Germany. On the day before, children all over Germany polish their shoes neatly and go to sleep looking forward to the morning When they wake they run to their shoes to find chocolate, orange, and maybe even some gummy bears and toys in them This short gleeful event is not spread wide because many people don’t know the difference between Nikolaus and Santa. In fact, over time many people forget that there were two different people in the first place.

Nikolaus was a generous bishop that lived in Myra, now Türkiye He was a saint who did many good deeds throughout his life, one of his most notable deeds, giving three poor sisters pieces of gold for three nights to save them from certain prostitution and give them the opportunity to marry instead.

Painting

This deed defines his appearance a lot since he is commonly drawn with three gold balls, which might represent the gold nuggets he granted the sisters. Even though Santa could be twins from their rougher description (man with a white beard, dressed in red, gives gifts in December) they are vastly different While Santa is known for being a cordial, chubby guy with a big sack full of presents, Nikolaus is a tall and slender man with bishop's attire, which is kind, but more distant. Either way, both of them are quite generous and make it possible for the Christian December holidays to exist

New Year’s Eve around the Globe

New Year’s Eve is a global celebration that, as its name suggests, celebrates the new year. There are many things that many countries share about this, such as fireworks and the reason for the celebration Even if some things are harmonious, there are different traditions around the world, as different cultures think differently about celebrations.

In Germany, as many readers may know, New Year’s Eve is more commonly referred to as ‘Silvester’. Oftentimes people eat raclette, a traditional dish that is usually based on cheese, but accompanied by anything your heart desires Millions of visitors from all around come to Berlin annually to celebrate Silvester Traditionally they gather at the biggest squares like the Brandenburg Gate and celebrate together They say “Guten Rutsch”, which wishes for people to ‘slide well’ into the new year

Mexico calls New Year’s Eve ‘Nochevieja’, which means ‘old night’ since it is saying goodbye to the old year Food and community are valued on Nochevieja, which is why people often hold large dinners with various dishes such as Ensalada de Noche Buena, and tamales, as well as Buñuelos, which are served on a ceramic dish that will be smashed after the sweets were enjoyed. Nochevieja also calls for new pants, which symbols vary in their color Would you like yellow for happiness and prosperity, red for love and passion, green for health and well-being, pink for true love and friendship, or perhaps white for hope and peace?

The Philippines also have a big meal, “Media Noche”, which is held at midnight The food being consumed has different meanings and effects Long noodles bring a healthy and prolonged life, sticky food holds onto good fortune, and greens guide to money, but chicken or fish are avoided, as they have to scavenge and peck for food and are therefore said to bring poverty 12 circular fruits combined with polka dot couture may just bring you extra money, which is why it is traditionally worn and displayed. When the clock hits 12, windows and doors are opened to let in good luck, while young children are encouraged to jump high in order to grow taller.

Masquerade parties and the nightlife scene are a big part of the Nigerian New Year. People are dressed with human or animal features being specifically highlighted. High-energy dances are performed to bring good luck and cheerfulness, as well as expel evil energy out of life Offrima, a very popular masquerade party, is known for the performers dressing up fish-like and presenting tribal dances The dancers do not take off their costumes, to avoid becoming vulnerable to negativity. Other than parties, religion is very significant too. Many people go to the church or mosque for intense prayer before the new year starts Another tradition is children going around from house to house to wish everyone in their community a happy New Year

G20 Bali Summit

YuSu

The G20 or Group of Twenty is an intergovernmental forum comprising 19 countries and the European Union It works to address major issues related to the global economy, such as international financial stability, climate change, mitigation, and sustainable development The G20 consists of countries that account for most of the world's national income, so its members have the power to ensure that enough funds are available for these vital activities to take off as soon as possible. In September 1999, after the 1997 Asian financial crisis, the first inaugural meeting was held on December 15-16, 1999 In 2022, the G20 summit was held in Nusa Dua, Bali, Indonesia with this year ’ s motto being “Recover Together, Recover Stronger”

What topics were discussed?

Food and energy security Russia-Ukraine War Including the UN Security Council, and the UN General Assembly resolution deploring the invasion of Russia into Ukraine and demanding Russia retreat from the territory of Ukraine.

All G20 countries

Food price increase & shortage

Prices for vegetable oil were 58% higher and food prices were 34% higher than in March 2021. As a leading exporter of grain, Ukraine has seen a dramatic drop in its exports. In 2022, it sowed 22% less. The area not sown – 2 8 million hectares – is almost as large as Belgium In July 2022, Russia agreed to stop the blockade of Ukraine’s Black Sea ports, thanks to the intervention of the UN However, the agreement will expire in a few days (Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan revealed that discussions on extending the agreement are ongoing).

Energy

Securing energy accessibility, scaling up smart and clean technologies, and advancing energy financing – where they made several important commitments Endorsed the Bali Compact (the G20 framework that sets out voluntary principles for energy transitions).

Climate and biodiversity

Tackle climate change by strengthening the full and effective implementation of the Paris Agreement and its temperature goal

Enhance environmental conservation and protection, sustainable use, and restoration

Economy

Currency: The central banks of the G20 will adjust their monetary tightening policies (which often means raising interest rates) on the premise of paying attention to global inflation. At the same time, it is necessary to limit the "transnational spillover effect" brought about by raising interest rates.

Nuclear weapons: Leaders agree that the use or threat of use of nuclear weapons is "unacceptable" and that upholding international law is essential; peaceful resolution of conflicts is essential and that "today's era must not be an era of war".

Establishment of a Financial Intermediary Fund (FIF) for PPR: Ministers agreed on the need for a new multilateral financing mechanism to address pandemic PPR financing gaps Health

Committed to continuing strengthening national health systems and sharing health data and research to fight future pandemics

Digital transformation

Emphasized the importance of fostering international cooperation for a more inclusive and sustainable digital transformation. And stressed the importance of enabling the free flow of data, also across borders

Is a Blackout in Germany realistic?

Although power failures in Germany are common, they usually only last a short time and don’t significantly impact the population A traffic light not working or houses being out of power for a couple of minutes are effects of these short power failures. However, Germany and other European countries have become increasingly concerned about a blackout Is a blackout a real threat or only scaremongering?

A blackout is understood as a supply breakdown across an entire region or country. It could be caused by a natural disaster, such as flooding or a strong storm, which damages the power lines Since global warming increases the chances of such natural disasters, the threat of a blackout caused by them has increased. However, the German government is more concerned about the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which caused gas prices to increase Consequently, more people try to heat using electricity, through using portable heaters, instead of using their gas heating. This could lead to a blackout because too much electricity is used by the population simultaneously and too little electricity is put into the system.

Jonas Gesing
Page 11 THE ISSUE - December 2022
Germany's power grid

The German Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Klimaschutz (Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection) led by Robert Habeck (a politician from Die Grünen) conducted a series of ‘stress tests’ to investigate the possibility of a blackout in Germany Although the tests showed that if certain scenarios were going to happen Germany’s power supply might be under threat, experts say a complete blackout is very unlikely, since the scenarios themselves are unlikely as well. It is important to note that Germany’s electricity supply is one of the safest in Europe Even in the case of an extreme situation, network operators still have plenty of options, for example, they could activate reserve power plants Furthermore, Europe’s electricity supply systems are connected; therefore, if one country lacks electricity others can help. Nevertheless, it is important to prepare for extreme situations by having enough water and food at home to survive a couple of days.

Around the globe there still is poverty, lack of education, child mortality, no gender equality, etc. UNICEF, though, is an organization that aspires to save lives, especially children’s, and is working towards addressing these problems The acronym UNICEF stands for “United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund”

UNICEF’s headquarter is located in New York, America, but they work with partners from around the globe and are available in over 190 countries. Their goal is to expand access to services that protect all children which includes defending their rights, helping them fulfill their potential, and getting them safely from their childhood through their adolescence

UNICEF works towards a lot of problems children are facing globally. They helped reduce child mortality. Children’s deaths have been reduced since 1990 from 1 in 11 children dying before the age of 5 to 1 in 27 in 2020. However, it is still a problem. 13,800 children under the age of 5 died daily in 2020 The most affected areas were Sub-Saharan Africa and Central and Southern Asia. The most common causes that result in children’s deaths are infectious diseases, pre-term birth, birth asphyxia, and trauma Nutrition-related factors contribute to about 45% of deaths. Access to skilled delivery at birth, postnatal care, sufficient nutrition, and vaccinations can save numerous lives

Furthermore, in 147 countries, UNICEF works to provide quality education. Over 600 million children and adolescents globally cannot attain minimum proficiency levels in reading and mathematics, even after ⅔ of them attend school Due to Covid-19, the education system was interrupted. Economic fragility, political instability, conflict, or natural disasters are all factors that contribute to the lack of education; although, poverty remains one of the largest causes In some countries, the educational opportunities for girls remain limited Without education, children will face in their future barriers to employment. By 2030, UNICEF wants quality education for all children. This means working towards including children who are not in school because of gender, disabilities, poverty, and ethnicity They want to expand support during a child’s learning journey UNICEF also wants to provide secure learning environments due to natural disasters

UNICEF aims for gender equality. Gender equality is essential to ensure that women, men, girls, and boys can enjoy the same rights, resources, opportunities, and protections In schools, many girls receive less support compared to boys Worldwide, nearly 1 in 4 girls between the ages of 15 and 19 are neither employed nor in education or training compared to 1 in 10 boys. Gender differences start out small during childhood, and in secondary school, girls tend to score higher when it comes to reading, but during adolescence, the girl’s well-being gets neglected In some countries, girls are cut off from the information and supplies they need to stay healthy and safe. Gender inequality can also turn violent. Adolescent girls face the highest risk of gender-based violence; 1 in 100 girls between 15 and 19 have experienced forced intercourse Also, hundreds of millions of girls worldwide are forced into child marriage. To accelerate gender equality, UNICEF builds partnerships across the globe, such as in national health sector to support the professionalization of th mostly female community health work UNICEF invests, especially for adolesce girls, in skills building to further their economic empowerment and work on assistive technologies for girls with disa

DJI O3 Air Unit

What is it?

The new DJI O3 air unit is a camera specifically designed for FPV drone pilots FPV stands for ‘first person view’ and is mostly used by drone pilots so that they can see where the drone is in real time even if their drone is kilometers away Most pilots use a set of FPV goggles to see what their air unit (camera on drone) is showing them. Now, what is so special about the DJI air unit? It is the newest and most advanced FPV air unit when paired with the new DJI goggles 2.

What kind of performance does it bring?

The O3 air unit has quite a few new features, as the name suggests it uses the new ocusync 3 which allows for a 4k 60FPS video transmission with a range of up to 10 km and a 30ms delay! The unit allows you to film in different kinds of views, the “ultra-wide” view which is similar to GoPro’s superview, the “wide” view, and the “normal” view. It even has built-in rocksteady, which allows for very smooth footage

Luke DJI O3 Air Unit
Page 15 THE ISSUE - December 2022
DJI Goggles 2

Will it replace GoPro?

The FPV world and video-making community usually use some type of action camera to record their footage that they will later edit and then publish In this case, race drone pilots would to this day have two cameras on their drone, one for the live feed to the googles and the other for recording the end footage used for videos and movies. But now that DJI has released the new air unit that can record 4K at 60FPS (which is good quality) people might not want to go out and buy another camera just to have a bit of better video quality out of it It also allows them to export the gyro data recorded from the air unit and let people put them into other platforms such as gyroflow to let them stabilize the footage like they want it to be Another benefit of the air unit is, if people don't have the action camera on their drone they will have a lighter drone which will give them more control or the reduced weight can allow them to have more flight time with a bigger battery. In the future, I believe that we will see more people ditching the action camera and they will just use the new air unit

World Cup Update

Since Germany won the World Cup in 2014, expectations were high for this World Cup as well as the one in 2018 However, Germany simply did not meet the expectations this year, which is sad because its performance in 2014 was absolutely perfect. In 2014, the 7:1 against Brazil and the last-minute free-kick goal from Toni Gross, for example, showed great skills. But the team dynamic changed after that World Cup due to a lot of good players leaving the national team or being too old like Schweinsteiger This has likely damaged the team a lot and they needed to find new players now.

It is the first time in 36 years that Canada qualified to play at the FIFA World Cup This was mostly because of Alphonso Davies, and Jonathan David The last time Canada was in the World Cup was in 1986.

Page 17 THE ISSUE - December 2022

France won the last FIFA World Cup and there is supposedly a curse to whoever wins it last The curse started off with France, who won the World Cup in 1998 and had to exit the competition in the group stage four years later. The winner of the 2006 World Cup, Italy, was eliminated from the 2010 World Cup in the group stages. The 2010 champions, Spain, met with the same fate in 2014 Germany, who won the FIFA World Cup in 2014, followed suit with a shock exit in Russia four years ago. Following this curse, France should not win the World Cup this time. However, we can see, their performances have been fine, even with having many crucial players injured. Many predicted France might also have a chance of winning it again

A few countries were out of the World Cup in the group stages such as Qatar, Ecuador, Iran, Wales, Mexico, Germany, and a few more. The countries that have passed the Round of 16 were pretty predictable The Netherlands won against the USA 3:1 with a good game Argentina won against Australia 2:1 The game was balanced but Argentina was a bit better. The match between France and Poland was mainly dominated by France - Kylian Mbappe scored 2 goals. The goal from Poland was scored in the 9th minute of playback time through a penalty by Lewandowski Senegal lost 0:3 against England Senegal gave their best but it was just not enough to beat a top team like England.

It is now the semi-finals, in which Morocco is playing against France, which is surprising, and Croatia against Argentina Our hopes were that Morocco and Croatia win, so they both go to the finals. If this was the case, our prediction were that Croatia will win against Morocco 1:0.

Ronaldo tied the Portuguese scoring Record

Kristoffer Kolstoe

Portugal vs Uruguay

Eusebio played for Portugal from 1963 till 1971 scoring 9 goals in the competition. On Monday the 28th of November, Ronaldo scored in his 5th World Cup appearance, equalizing this record The goal was a header in the 54th minute of the game, assisted by Bruno Fernandes. This means Ronaldo has a chance of being the top scorer in terms of goals scored in the World Cup by a Portuguese player. Portugal has secured their way to the knockout stages, giving Ronaldo even more time to break it The significant goal happened in the Lusail Iconic Stadium, which is in the Country of Qatar.

Ronaldo's incredible statistics

Ronaldo’s record in the league shows that he can win with any team and at any position He fits almost all the playing styles The Portugal national team is not filled with many stars. Yet he has won many games for Portugal, which makes him one of the most important players in Portugal. Ronaldo’s play style mostly consists of headers; therefore, he mostly stands near the goal He made the most goals with his head in the world with 112 goals

Ronaldo and his selfless personality

In addition, Ronaldo has donated millions to charity, including one of his Ballon d'ors (Men's player of the year award). One Ballon d'or is estimated to be worth around 15 Million Euros! Ronaldo also donates blood for cancer patients, as well as, people who lost a lot of blood due to an injury, or even to treat patients with blood disorders

What is Ronaldo up to now?

Ronaldo and his Portuguese team have been knocked out of the world cup by Morocco He hasn't been doing well this season and the public does not like it Even before this year had started he had received 12,520 hateful tweets towards him making the pressure immense for Ronaldo. Since then he has likely received even more! After the loss, he is now returning to training with his personal trainer as he was kicked out of Manchester in November

Brain Food

Our monthly question for your brain

Why did the person to create the keyboard go with qwerty instead of abcdef?

Charly: I think he went with qwerty due to our daily language which makes it easier to type

Daniel: qwerty was made to make it more difficult for to type since abcdef was too easy

Jo: Because of hand-eye coordination

Jonas: Because the person arranged the letters the way they are used the most.

Kris: If he's the creator he was probably just mad bored and changed it I won't lie, the abcdef would be very much easier, but we move Whoever made it is a W

Luke: The qwerty keyboard is a lot more efficient to type with than the abcdef keyboard

Lukas: Because in the 1200s there was the man that decided that there was a meaning to the qwerty keyboard and it would bring a spiritual god to our earth

Milan: To make it more comfortable to type on

Yu-Su: QWERTY keyboard is to slow down typing and prevent key jams
