Metton follows a series of business philosophies handed down by his father, with his favorite being “Pursue Excellence Always!” Ultimately, the food at Wingstop is superior. “The goal in my restaurants is that each customer feels welcome when they come into our restaurants and are satisfied when they leave,” Metten said. The owner also credits his employees with being his greatest asset, adding that Wingstop also focuses on customer service. “To me, customer service is an umbrella that encompasses several things that lead to overall customer satisfaction,” he said. “This includes a spotless restaurant; a smiling friendly, staff that gives the customers a welcome feeling; pursuit of excellence with each guest and order.” Metten also said he loves what he does and the people with whom he works. Providing tasty pizza, Italian dishes, steak, veal and chicken earned Napoli’s Italian Restaurant the Best Italian Food designation in a poll of readers. Napoli’s is owned by Gino Mulliqi, for the second time. He first opened the restaurant in 2001, sold it two years later and then bought it back in 2013. The restaurant underwent a complete renovation and reopened in January 2014. Mulliqi got into the food service business through the influence of his father-in-law who worked more than 30 years in restaurants, managing other Napoli locations in Pottsboro, Allen and Plano. “We wanted to bring a good sitdown Italian restaurant to Wylie,” Mulliqi said.

Prior to getting into the restaurant business, the Napoli’s owner worked as a sales director for Verizon. What sets the restaurant apart is treating every customer with respect and integrity, the same way Mulliqi would want to be treated. The restaurant works with several schools, nonprofit organizations and churches.

The Best Pizza in Wylie is served at Marco’s Pizza, according to a poll of The Wylie News readers. Marco’s is located at 2041 N. Hwy. 78, Ste. 111, and is owned by Asha, Dushyant and Bhavana Patel. The pizzeria opened in 1978 and provides fresh, quality food for carryout, dine-in and delivery customers.

“We offer quality food and the best customer service,” Asha said. Prior to opening Marco’s, she worked 16 years in the medical field and her husband works in the IT industry.

Peter C. Hall, an attorney for 12 years, decided to pursue a career in the law field because he enjoyed the critical and analytical thinking that is involved. As a probate lawyer, he gets the opportunity to meet new people weekly and help guide them through and plan several different phases of their lives. As a result of all his hard work, Hall was named the Best Attorney in the Murphy Monitor’s Best Of voting. Hall said the biggest challenge in probate is helping people understand the realities of probate. “Frequently I hear “I don’t need a will” or “we don’t need to probate the will because everything automatically goes to mom/dad.” Neither statement is true. Independent advisers will also consider products from all firms across the market, and have to give unbiased and unrestricted advice. A restricted adviser or firm can only recommend certain products, product providers, or both. Another challenge is client emotion. The average investor over the past 20 years has made 2.5 percent per year. Dennis tries to invest in things when people are running away and be fearful when others are greedy. (Notice the Warren Buffett Rule). He bought his first stock a couple of weeks after Pearl Harbor was bombed. “In 2009 nobody wanted stocks; you should have invested. In 2000 everyone wanted to buy Dot Com Companies; you should have run,” he said. Dennis is a long-time member of the Wylie Chamber of Commerce and is an endowed member of the East Fork Masonic Lodge in Wylie. He has supported the Christian Care Center every year and added to its endowment each year. He also is a founding donor and endowed member of the Wylie Education Foundation and continues to support that organization each year. He gives to a couple of different churches in the community and supports nonprofits such as Equest, a pet rescue and others.

Zane Shepherd spent a number of years in the insurance business in different capacities, but when it came time for a career change, he was looking for a business ownership opportunity in the insurance industry that would allow him to work directly with customers. “As an Allstate agent, I have the opportunity to help my customers protect what they’ve worked so hard for. After graduating from Baylor University in Waco he completed a four-year Dental degree at Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas. He then had the opportunity to earn a Master’s degree and a Specialist’s Certificate in Orthodontics at Baylor College of Dentistry in 2003. Dr. Fesler and his wife are active members of Watermark Community Church, where they serve the second through third grade children. For the fourth straight year in a row, Betty Spraggins was named the Best City Council Member in a Murphy Monitor reader’s poll. She was first elected to the Murphy city council in 2013 and last year earned another three-year term. “The award may seem like just words to lots of folks, but it means the world to me that you voted giving me your confidence and trust for four years in a row. You have touched my heart,” Spraggins said. She is heavily involved in all aspects of the city inside and out. “Serving on council has given me an opportunity to be a humble servant and to let your voices be heard, loud and clear,” Spraggins said. “Myself and citizens are united together as one. I am your nextdoor neighbor or the lady living down the street. We both, you and I, will be the strength to continue to bring beauty and safety to our city. Looking into my eyes, you will see a reflection of yourself.”

Spraggins said the biggest issue facing the city is the lack of voter turnout. “Our percentage of voting is one of the worst things. Our citizens fail to come out and vote, when we have the opportunity to speak out with our votes,” she said. She is a member of the Chamber of Commerce and Dallas and Texas Restaurant Association. In addition, she has volunteered her time to the Anita Martinez Group fundraiser, Attorney Adelfa Callejo fundraiser and Kent Waldrep Charity event. The winner, along with her husband Wayne Spraggins, moved to Murphy in 2008 after living in Farmers Branch, Farmersville and Mexia over the years.

Wylie Tire Shop has served the community for 15 years and is voted Best Tire Shop in a reader’s poll. The business sells new and used tires, and repairs tires from small lawn mowers and tractors to tractor-trailer rigs. Owners of the business are Alan, Daniel and Michael Stufft. Seeing an opportunity for a tire shop in Wylie, they opened the business with the help of an uncle, Tom Richey, who has a large tire shop in Pittsburgh, PA. Al Stufft worked as a coal miner in Pennsylvania for 20 years before moving to Texas in 1995 and starting Stufft’s Truck and Tractor Service, which performed grading and cleanup of new home developments in the area.

Michael Stufft has always worked with Al, and Daniel Stufft worked in the accounting field before leaving the corporate world to join Wylie Tire Shop in 2010. “We are a family-owned business that focuses on customer service, speed of service and consistency,” the owner said. “Our motto is to treat our customers and their vehicles exactly like we would like to be treated.” Wylie Tire Shop is a member of Wylie Chamber of Commerce, Wylie Downtown Merchants Association. Brett Franks is entering his fifth year as a Sachse City Council member, and residents appreciate his work, as they voted him as Best City Council Member. “I have had an interest for many years,” Franks said of being a council member. “I wanted to have input in the community I lived in and bring a common sense approach to the future of Sachse. Let’s plan and put in place opportunities for Sachse to grow and prosper.” Franks’ interest in public service and volunteering began in the Army and continued after he was discharged. “I enjoy the planning aspect of city council,” he said. “You have to be a good steward of the city, and at the same time see what will happen five, 10 or even 20 years down the road. We are preparing for the future. One of my favorite things I have heard about working for cities is ‘a city is growing or dying.’ Sachse is definitely growing. However, we must be dili-

gent in preparing for our future.” The councilman added, “When I began serving on City Council in 2012 we were in the very early stages of emerging from the economy downturn of the previous few years. Sachse was on a lean budget and the housing market was not starting back up at that time. Sachse was fortunate that we did not have to let employees go during that time. Unfortunately, the fixes and the things that we needed and wanted to do took longer than usual during that tough time. We continue to upgrade and improve aged and damaged infrastructure. This is a high priority but sometimes goes unrecognized. We dedicate a lot of the city’s resources to pipes and tubes under the ground that you may never see. This is something that you may not know unless there is an interruption in your services. A big thanks to our city employees who keep our city moving and the residents happy.”

Franks also received his medical training in the Army, and he continues to serve the community as a physicians assistant for an orthopedic surgeon, who specializes in sports medicine injuries and general orthopedic. Franks also volunteers for the medical staff at Sachse High School Besides being a councilman. Franks also is the liaison for Sachse Parks and Recreation Board. “I am on the West Point field force. I organize the Sachse Memorial day ceremony, and I am a committee co-chair for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Moving Wall that will be displayed in our city May 2630,” he noted.

Even though he has served as a member of the Wylie City Council for a little less than a year, Jeff Forrester was picked as the Best City Council Member in a poll of The Wylie News readers. Forrester won election to Place 3 on the council in May 2016 and takes his commitment seriously. “I feel that it was a way for me to be involved and serve the city that we live in, to ensure that Wylie continues to deliver on its promise to ‘Honor our past; Embrace the present; and Plan for our future,’” he declared. Prior to winning election to the council, Forrester served on several volunteer boards of directors and worked with city governments as a business owner and as a concerned citizen. “I enjoy working with the citizens of Wylie to ensure their opinions are considered on issues that will shape our city in the future,” the council member said. Forrester is Vice President for Procurement for Taco Bueno Restaurants. He attended Tarleton State University, Art Institute of Dallas and Western Governors University Texas. He is a member of East Fork Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite Valley of Dallas and Hella Shriners. The biggest challenge he has faced as a city council member was recovery of the city following the hailstorms of 2016 in which 80 percent of residents and busi-

nesses sustained damage. City staff and leadership ensured that all emergency services, police, fire-rescue and normal city businesses continued to operate uninterrupted. “Through it all, it was very heartwarming to see the city come together in a time of need and to see neighbors helping to comfort each other and work together to repair homes and businesses,” he said. “We continue to hear stories related to the storms of those who gave of themselves to assist their community. This was a great testament to the fabric of our city.”

Exchange Club of Murphy Marv Williams of the Exchange Club of Murphy, was honored for all his service by being voted the Best Community Volunteer in a Murphy Monitor readers poll. Williams is all about giving back to the community. “I feel that everyone should have a desire to give back in the community. The Exchange Club gives you that opportunity,” he said. “After all, it is more blessed to give than receive. I think it was Winston Churchill who said “We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give.”” Williams has been with the Exchange Club and Chamber of Commerce since 2009, in addition to being a 30-year member of Lavon Drive Baptist Church. He has over 40 years experience in IT support, and most recently was a client support representative with HP in Plano. Williams commented that he has always had a servant’s heart and it’s extremely rewarding knowing that he has put a smile on a child’s face because you have provided them with a coat or even a Christmas present.

He said the biggest challenge in serving is having patience. “Having patience quickly comes to mind. We live in a generation that is not respectful nor appreciative as when I was a kid,” Williams said. “Sadly, too many kids live in a single parent environment.”

Community Volunteer Best of Wylie Raymond B. Cooper

Christian Care Center of Wylie Accolades continue to follow businessman and civic leader Raymond B. Cooper who is selected this year as Best Community Volunteer. Cooper, 84, continues to report for work every day at Universal Transformer Company, the company he founded in 1957, but spends much of his time overseeing operations of Christian Care Center of Wylie, for which he is president of the board of directors. Christian Care helps families in the surrounding area with food, clothing and assistance. Cooper donated the land and organized volunteers to construct the center’s original building in 1992. The honoree moved to Wylie with his family in the mid-1930s and has been married to his wife, Sue, since 1952. They

are the parents of three children and have several grandchildren. Over the years he has served on the boards of directors of North Texas Municipal Water District, Wylie Lions Club and Wylie Chamber of Commerce, and was named Citizen of the Year by the chamber in 1988 and 2003. Cooper Junior High School was named in his honor in 2006, and the same year he was named a Living Legend of Collin College.

Murphy Fire Rescue Department Lieutenant Adam Kroviak has served as a firefighter for the last 10 years, and in his hometown Murphy Fire Rescue department since 2008 in a full-time status. He is also a part-time Firefighter/Paramedic with the city of Sachse. In recognition of his service, Lt. Kroviak was named the Best Firefighter/ EMT of the Murphy Monitor’s Best Of voting. During his time with the Murphy department, he was promoted to Driver/ Engineer in 2011 and was elevated to Fire Lieutenant in 2015. Lt. Kroviak started out his career as a part-time Firefighter/EMT in 2006 with the Wylie Fire-Rescue department. “I have always had a sense of service and compassion to help people in need. This career has enabled me to act in that manner on a daily basis,” he said. He holds an associates degree in Fire Protection from Weatherford College and bachelor’s degree in Fire Administration from Western Illinois. He also holds a paramedic certification and multiple certifications from the Texas Commission on Fire Protection. He pointed out that what he enjoys most about his career is creating change and interacting with people. “I love this career because it gives

The sacrifice and courage demonstrated by the first responders on Sept. 11, 2001 sparked a desire in Scott Potter to do something more substantial with his life.

Voted the Best Firefighter by readers in The Wylie News poll, Battalion Chief Brandon Blythe has served as a firefighter for more than 20 years, and in his hometown Wylie Fire-Rescue department since 2003. “I have wanted to be a firefighter since before I can remember. My grandmother tells me that I started talking about it as soon as I was able to talk,” the honoree said. Blythe became a volunteer firefighter with Wylie in August 1993, worked for the city of Palestine fire department in 1995-97 and city of Richardson fire department in 1997-2003 before securing a job in his hometown. “I always wanted to work here in my hometown, but in 1995 when I became a certified firefighter Wylie was much smaller and only had three full-time firefighters,” he recalled. As a high school senior student, Blythe attended Emergency Medical Technician school to become an EMT, became a basic certified firefighter through the Collin College Fire Academy in 1994 and earned health paramedic credentials in 1996 through Methodist Hospital.

The battalion chief earned a Bachelor of Fire Science Degree at Columbia South University, graduated Texas Fire Chief Academy and is certified as a Fire Service Chief Executive Officer, Fire Officer IV, Master Instructor, Incident Safety Officer, Basic Wildland Firefighter, Hazmat Tech and Incident Commander and Master Firefighter. Blythe pointed out that what he enjoys most about his career is the people with whom he works. “Our entire staff is dedicated to the citizens of this community,” he said. “I feel the same way and am honored to be able to serve in the city that I am from and still live in. It makes for an awesome environment to work in.” The honoree noted that he does not consider the demands of a job he loves as a challenge, but did note that 2016 was very challenging for the entire city as it dealt with the destruction and recovery from storms.

I also have down time to train, eat, sleep and relax with the other firefighters. I love the self fulfillment in being able to help our citizens on some of their worst days.” He added, “Early in my career we had growing pains that seemed very

challenging in hindsight. We’ve come a long way, and are very fortunate we have had good leadership. Staying on top of strategies, tactics and the equipment that we use is never enough. We have a commitment to our city to be the best that we can be. At 41, fitness is something I have to stay on top of. Our administration is passionate about reducing the risks of heart attacks and strokes that are so prevalent in our profession.” Potter earned his way on to the Sachse Fire Department after training at the fire academy and obtaining a paramedic’s license, a process that took about 18 months. Prior to becoming an EMT, Potter was involved in business and sales after attending college in San Antonio. He also took college-level courses in fire science at Brookhaven Community College.

From an early age, Murphy city secretary Susie Quinn knew that she wanted a career in government. “My best friend’s mother was the Ector County Treasurer when I was growing up. I shadowed her and the Ector County Clerk when I was a teenager and knew then that I wanted to be involved in government work,” she said. “I liked how they both assisted citizens and how they were making a difference in their respective professions.” Quinn has been the city’s secretary for the last two and half years. Her service to the city was rewarded by being named the Best Municipal/Government Employee in the Murphy Monitor’s Best Of voting. In total, she been a city secretary for over 20 years, and during a three-year stint worked for a school district. In 1994, when she was appointed in

Eastland, she requested to become the first certified city secretary in Eastland and the Commission granted her request. She has continued recertifying every five years and was awarded her fourth recertification this January. In addition, Quinn is an officer in the Lone Star Chapter of Municipal Clerks and is a member of the Texas Municipal Clerks Association, and International Institute of Municipal Clerks. She studied political science in college, and holds two certifications, with the second being an International Certified Municipal Clerk designation coming in 2007. Quinn said it is a pleasure to come to work every day.

We’re all presented with the same questions of identity and purpose, so public service is a satisfying call to answer.” McAfee enjoys the chance to “make a difference” as a public servant, something he’s also done in Little Elm and McKinney, as well as on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC and Texas Tech. Two Wylie city employees, Nelda Timmons of the City Manager’s office and Stephanie Storm of the City Secretary’s office, tied for Best Municipal Employee in The Wylie News readers’ poll. Storm went to work in the City Secretary’s office 10 ½ years ago. In her prior job in the final documents department of a mortgage company, she learned some of the tasks that make her transition to records analyst a little easier. “At my previous job I scanned and sent records to be recorded with the county, so I was familiar with that aspect of the position,” she said. Since joining the city, she has received training in the Public Information Act, the enterprise content management system, Laserfiche and records management rules and regulations. “I absolutely love what I do. It is everchanging and I learn something new every day,” Storm said. “I enjoy doing research and locating information to assist citizens and staff members.” The records analyst earned a bachelor’s

degree in business administration, Texas Registered Municipal Clerk certification and has completed five Laserfiche Certified Professional courses. She currently serves on the Leadership Wylie executive board. Timmons is Executive Administrative Assistant in the office of City Manager and has been employed with the city of Wylie for seven years. She worked for the city of Garland for six years. “Working for a municipality gives you a sense of pride when you are able to assist a citizen with their particular needs or concerns,” Timmons said. “I have always enjoyed customers and working in a municipality.” The executive administrative assistant pointed out that she received on-the-job training at Garland and Wylie and continues to receive training in technology and governmental procedures. Timmons is a volunteer with Meals on Wheels where she organized a group of Wylie administrative assistants to help deliver meals on Fridays, and she attends New Hope Church.

First Baptist Church Lead Pastor Dr. Kris Segrest has actively worked in church since he was an eighth grade student, has been a fulltime pastor for 21 years and is named Best Pastor in a poll of The Wylie News readers. “I love seeing people coming to know Christ in a personal way. What I get to share with people week in and week out is how they can have a relationship with God,” he declared. Segrest pointed out that religion has hurt a lot of people and confused others. He noted that Jesus did not come to earth to establish another religion, but to establish a relationship with individuals. The pastor recalled that God called him to the ministry when he was 14 years old and that he has had the

He started his career as a student pastor, then a teaching pastor before accepting the position as lead pastor at FBC in Wylie. He earned an undergraduate degree at Baylor University, a Master of Divinity Degree at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and a Doctor of Ministry degree at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, but said the best education you can get is by working in a church. If anything makes him unique in his profession it is his work in revitalizing churches by changing the culture of an older church to meet the needs of a changing community.

“I am fortunate to be a part of a church that is nearly 150 years old, yet is more vibrant than it has ever been,” Segrest declared. He notes that his biggest challenge is one of perception where many people see pastors as anti-everything, narrow-minded and bigoted. Historically, Segrest pointed out, pastors were considered to be solid and trustworthy members of society and that he simply tries to hold to God’s standard and reach out to others in love. In addition to pastoring FBC, he has served on the Wylie Chamber of Commerce board of directors, as Chaplain to the Wylie Pirates football team and on the Ethics and Religious Liberty Committee of the Southern Baptist of Texas.

A spirit of inclusiveness and service to the community combined to earn First Baptist Church of Wylie the designation of Best Place of Worship in a readers’ poll. FBW was established in 1870 as Shiloh Baptist Church of Nickleville, 16 years before Wylie was a city. Primary mission of the church is to help people discover how to have a relationship with God through Jesus Christ His son, and follows a mission statement of “Spreading God’s fame by making disciples of all people.” To do that, FBW offers ministries for everyone - preschool, children, students and adults. One thing that makes the Wylie church unique is that it attracts people of multiple generations and multiple races who wor-

ship and serve alongside each other. Another distinction is a schedule with multiple days and times for worship, at 6 p.m. each Saturday followed by groups for all ages, and 8:15 a.m., 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. worship services Sunday. The church hosts a free medical clinic each Tuesday at 6 p.m. in its Event Center downtown, and helps people in the community who are in need of food, money for bills, shelter, transportation and counseling. Last year, FBW created Rebuild Wylie to aid Wylie residents in the aftermath of the April 2016 hailstorm. Through Rebuild Wylie, more than $200,000 was distributed to families and individuals who had needs, plus church volunteers helped to tarp roofs, haul off debris and provided spiritual relief.

Fred Mancias has been a police officer for almost 24 years. Prior to that, he served in the U.S. Army. The Murphy Patrol Officer was named the Best Police Officer in the Murphy Monitor’s Best Of voting. He commented that he went into public service because he likes working with people. “The thing I love most about serving is knowing that you helped someone in the community,” Mancias said. In addition to being a patrol officer with the Murphy PD, Mancias is a field-training officer, K-9 trainer (expert in drug dogs), police and small arms instructor, and is a PPCT defensive and tactics instructor. Mancias said the technology, computers in the vehicles, and patrol cameras have been the biggest change during his 24 years of service.

Terri O’Neal loves working with people and with animals, and that passion garnered her the votes to win Best Police Department Employee for the city of Sachse. O’Neal cites working for the city has allowed her to do both, work with animals and give back to the community at the same time. She has been working for Sachse Animal Services for 9 ½ years. Prior to that, she trained with the SPCA of Dallas for 2 years and took classes to learn about everything from Animal Health to Animal Cruelty Investigation. “I’ve also trained with State and County officials to learn Texas Animal Laws and to be able to enforce Sachse City Ordinances,” she said. O’Neal said she loves the support that the small shelter has in the community. “I love that people show up for us every time we need something, whether it be volunteers who come walk the dogs or donations of food or supplies when they are needed. All we have to do is ask. I love

being part of a department and community that truly cares about its animals.” Sachse’s growth is one of the biggest changes/challenges said O’Neal. Growth brings new businesses, new homes, new people and new pets. “The shelter is almost always full to overflowing now and the challenge is in finding good homes for the animals we care for,” O’Neal said. When she’s not working at the shelter, O’Neal joined an organization after the tornado struck Garland and Rowlett last year. “ I joined with an organization called Operation Blessing and served with them during that crisis and also in Baton Rouge when it was flooded this past summer,” she said.

A 20-year veteran police officer, Steve Trester of Wylie Police Department, has been voted Best Police Officer in a poll of The Wylie News readers. “As a kid, I wanted to be that guy who could be part of something special, and as I grew up that turned into a desire to be part of something bigger than myself,” the officer said. “Today, it gives me the ability to make a difference for the city where I live, raise my daughters and spend my time.” Trester attended Collin College, Stephen F. Austin University and Collin County Police Academy, holds a Master Peace Officers License and has completed thousands of hours of training for his job. “What I love most about serving has changed over the years, but today it is being part of something bigger than I will ever be, being humbled daily for the privilege of working with the men

and women employed by the city of Wylie,” he said. Trester explained that he regularly sees city employees who truly care about the citizens of Wylie. The biggest challenge of his job is keeping a balance between life with his family and his work as a police officer. “It is very easy to allow the stress of never knowing what will happen during your day to take over in your life,” the officer pointed out. He believes that through faith, family and friends he has been able to conquer that challenge.

School Board Trustee Best of Murphy Carrolyn Moebius

Plano Independent School District

Carrolyn Moebius has served on the Plano Independent School District board for six-plus years. During that time, the Murphy resident, named Best School Board Trustee, was part of approving the STEAM and Medical Sciences Academy and helped to structure the IB World School. In addition, students will soon have a fine arts theatre. “I decided to run for school board because I care about the kids. They are first and foremost in my thoughts,” she said. “I served on several PTA boards and had decided I wanted to do more to help all of our students.” Her dedication to the kiddos was recognized with the selection of Best School Board Trustee in the Murphy Monitor’s Best Of voting. Moebius said the best part about serving is being able to provide more opportunities and choices for PISD students. She commented that she has faced many

challenges while serving. “I was part of two reduction in forces, due to the state budget’s shortfalls. In addition to an ever changing and inclusive population, approving a Tax Ratification Election, putting together the last bond package and hiring two superintendents,” she said. She holds a bachelors of arts in music with an emphasis in voice from Trinity University and has hours in accounting from the University of St. Thomas. For the past 20 years, Moebius and her husband Jim have operated Murphy Road Animal Hospital. The couple have three children that attend PISD schools. She is a member of the Plano Rotary Club and National Charity League.

School Board Trustee Best of Sachse Linda Lorraine Griffin

Garland Independent School District Linda Lorraine Griffin was voted Best School Board Trustee in The Sachse News reader’s poll. Griffin is beginning her 19th year and is in her seventh 3-year term. “It is not about that which you get paid for, but instead what you give back.” Being a public servant, a school board trustee, allows me to use my talents and skills to help advocate for all students. I believe that all students can succeed when given the opportunity through access and equity.” The trustee said she was drawn to serve because she has a passion for students. “The greatest joy I receive is watching our Garland ISD students receive their high school diploma. At those ceremonies, I recognize that our programs and staff have prepared students for their future - career and college readiness,” she said.

The biggest challenges as a GISD board member in public education, besides funding, are technology and school district assessments, she said. “It is important that hardware and software implemented in the classroom improves academic performance,” Griffin said. Griffin keeps busy outside GISD as the Salvation Army Chairperson for the Garland Unit, Alpha Xi Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., DFW Alumni Association of Tennessee State University, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and numerous local charities.

School Board Trustee Best of Wylie Barbara Goss

With eight years of service under her belt, Barbara Goss was named Best School Trustee by readers in a poll of The Wylie News. “I’ve been on the board for eight years now and I feel so incredibly blessed to have this opportunity to serve,” Goss said. “The community has entrusted me with so much, and I want to do the very best I can for them.” The trustee decided to run for the Wylie Independent School District board after attending board of trustees meetings for four years. She had served on the District Education Committee, Bond Committee and Wylie East Education Committee, and researched school finance, school ratings and school transparency before deciding to run for a seat.

Since being elected to the board, Goss spent a year in intense training through Leadership TASB, learning about school districts across Texas and Arkansas, and now regularly speaks with board members in other districts and researches what is happening in schools in other states. “There are so many things I love about serving,” the trustee said. “I think if I had to choose what I love the most, it would have to be seeing our goals as they are accomplished.” Goss has a professional background in human resources, owned a screen-printing business for a few years and earned a degree at Collin College. She recently started back to school fulltime to finish a degree at Texas

Tech University and will graduate in 2018. The biggest challenge she sees as a WISD board member is helping students and their families when they experience extreme difficulties, not the least of which was being displaced by the April 2016 hailstorm. “Many of our families had construction at home and at school. Some of the families were displaced,” Goss recalled. “It was important to me during that time to help those kids feel as normal as possible in the middle of the chaos from the storm.” She pointed out that her focus on serving the community has been on the school district the past few years and noted that she wants to do the best job possible as WISD continues in a period of rapid growth.

Wylie Independent School District Wylie Independent School District Superintendent Dr. David Vinson has been named Best School District Employee in a poll of readers of The Wylie News. Vinson has served as WISD superintendent since July 2011, moving here from Floresville where he served as superintendent for six years. “I love kids! It’s that simple,” he declared of his choice to pursue a career in education. “I cannot get enough of them. The joy of seeing a kiddo reach a goal, win an award, read for the first time . . . it brings me joy,” the superintendent continued. Vinson reported that volunteering with church youth groups helped prepare him for his career, learning that all children are different and that they need care and engagement to be successful. The WISD superintendent has worked in education for 24 years. He earned three degrees at Texas Tech University, a bach-

elor’s in business, master’s in education leadership and a doctorate in curriculum and instruction with a focus on character education. “Seeing a child succeed, it’s just incredible,” Vinson said. “When you see that kiddo cross that finish line, overcome a struggle and find success, words just cannot describe how much joy it makes me feel.” He points out that building common ground for 80 percent of students and staff is needed for the future, but more importantly is helping to curb the anxiety of the remaining 20 percent. Vinson said he spends a lot time in prayer for the 20 percent. In 2016 he was named Wylie Citizen of the Year.
