Strong lines bolster Panthers’ prospects By Greg Ford Sports Editor
gford@csmediatexas.com PLANO — The Panthers lost some quality from the 2016 squad, but there is plenty coming back. That, plus the fact numerous talented newcomers have moved up from the subvarsity, has head coach Joey McCullough feeling optimistic about the upcoming campaign. “I’m excited about the depth in certain key positions,” McCullough said. “Number one being the depth of the offensive line, which since (I first got here) coach (Jacob) Ramon has done a great job with that. All of our guys are returning from last year, and we’re excited about that. Also, our depth on the defensive line (is good). Those are two key ingredients for us. Senior Trey Hempstead returns at left tackle after being named second-team, All-District in 2016, as is senior center Tyler Barna, a three-year starter. Senior left guard Braeden Braysacher is also back, and has done an “outstanding job” there, McCullough said. Also back are junior right tackle Jalen Brown, who started every game as a sophomore, and junior Chase Cotton at right guard, who started most of the 2016 contests. Senior Daryc Donati had an outstanding offseason, the coach said, while junior Colby Johnston is considered a “rising star.” Having such a solid line up front should ease the coaches’ concern regarding a new starting quarterback, a position at which there’s competition this offseason; senior Reece Field is battling with junior Brandon Mallory. “Both of them have strong arms, and we’re excited about what they’ve done (so far),” the coach said. Whoever does take the snaps will be supported by a strong running game that features seniors Jonathan Meadors and Trey Hunter, the latter of whom was hurt much of last season. “When we have both those guys in the backfield, we’ve got as good a one-two punch as it can be,” McCullough said. Field’s or Mallory’s strong arm will have an “unbelievable player” in junior Braylon Henderson to throw to, the coach said. Also back are seniors Sam Moore and Isaiah Hawkins, with juniors Joe Carter, Josh Allison and Jalen Anderson also providing quite a bit of playmaking

Defensively, senior end Lee Alley is coming off an “unbelievable spring,” and brings a ton of athleticism to the line, the coach said, with junior Killian Carper, an inside player last season, manning the other end position. Junior Colin Camp and sophomore Noah Richards are expected to start at the tackle positions. Alley, along with outside linebacker
Chris Williams and (defensive back) Nathan Miller are the only seniors slated to start on PESH’s defense. Another could be Quinn Stevenson, who may see some time at cornerback. At linebacker, the Panthers will replace middle linebacker Anthony Hines — he’s now at Texas A&M — with junior Josh Blagowsky, who moves over from an outside spot. Williams, a three-year varsity player, will be on strong side, McCullough said, with sophomore Trey Scott-Jones playing on the other side.
“I have touted him as being the Newcomer of the Year, and he may be the best athlete who has ever come through these hallways,” McCullough said of ScottJones. Miller will be a safety, while Tyler Owens, who started six games in 2016, also will be part of East’s last line of defense. At one corner will be Zach Nwachukwu, who McCullough believes could “be the best corner in this district.” Henderson will start at the other corner, with Stevenson spelling him on occasion.
