McDowell worked as an administrative assistant at a private Christian school prior to joining Jal Dennis and pointed out that she picked the new career direction as well as the career picking her. Although she had worked as an administrative assistant, she completed special training to perform the duties needed in the financial industry. She noted that the interesting and complex dynamic of the financial industry is
what appealed to her in making a career choice. McDowell describes herself as “encouraging, quiet and compassionate,” and her favorite motivational book is the Bible. She prefers to keep secret information that others don’t already know about her. Exhibiting a positive outlook, the honoree declared, “It’s all good!”

Highway 78, Wylie, TX 75098 972-442-6565 anbtx.com Even though the “bankers’ hours” that first attracted her to the profession have flown out the window, Anita Collins of American National Bank thoroughly enjoys her calling and has been named Best Banker in Wylie. “I definitely chose banking,” she declared. “I believe I pestered Truett Smith (owner and founder of First State Bank of Wylie) so many times to hire me that he finally gave me the opportunity. I quickly realized how fortunate and fulfilling it is to work and make a difference in the community you love!” Collins noted that when she started in the business more than 30 years ago, the bank closed at 2 p.m. most days, and was closed on Saturday. That changed into days that often run 12 hours, but the longer workdays do not faze her. “I still love what I do, so the long days go by quickly and are very rewarding,” the banker said. Much of her training over the years has been by doing, but Collins also completed a Southern Methodist University Graduate School of Banking program, several accounting and business classes and other professional training.
She most enjoys working to help a new business open, aiding an existing business to succeed and seeing friends and customers prosper. In fact, some of her closest friends started out as banking relationships. A book she reads daily for inspiration is “Jesus Calling, Enjoying Peace in His Presence,” which was given to her by Michelle Reimer, chair of a non-profit board on which Collins served and a chaplain for Baylor Hospital. She also reads a number of business and banking magazines. The banker describes herself as caring, loyal and independent. Her favorite quote was on a plaque in her grandmother’s house, which read, “The hurrier I go, the behinder I get.” Collins, her husband, Bill, and their three children are all graduates of Wylie High School. Her biggest challenge is time management, so that she can better balance all the people and things in her life that are important.

Tullock’s first job in the industry was with First Bank of Rowlett where she learned to run proofs and worked as a drive-in teller and vault teller. Kathy is currently a commercial lending secretary for Anita Collins. All of this experience helped her to get jobs all over Texas. She attributes her success to a willingness to learn and try new jobs. She enjoys meeting people and helping them achieve their financial goals. In three words, Tullock describes
herself as loyal, generous and stable, and tries to follow the ‘golden rule’ to treat others the way you want to be treated. An avid reader, the banker enjoys fiction, murder mysteries, autobiographies and whatever looks interesting. If she was not a banker, she declared, “I’ve always wanted to be a radio disc jockey.” The biggest challenge she says she faces is to love others when they don’t love her.

With 36 years in the propane business, maybe a little more, Bill Collins of Collins Propane Company learned the industry from the bottom to the top, helping him to be voted Best Boss in Wylie. “I have had the pleasure of working with, or for, some of the most experienced and knowledgeable people in the propane industry,” he said. Collins’ father, Leslie Collins, drove a propane truck for Wylie Butane, which was owned by his brother, Ed Collins. After finishing high school, and as a beginning farmer, he accepted a seasonal position at Wylie Butane to supplement his income in the fall of 1979. In 1983, Wylie Butane was bought by AmeriGas Propane, and a year later Collins accepted a full-time position with Ameri-
Gas. He held various management positions over the next 20 years, until his position was eliminated due to company reorganization in 2003. That provided him the opportunity to start Collins Propane Company in 2005. “I believe the business chose me, with my uncle, Ed Collins, providing the opportunity to work in the propane industry; my dad, who was always supportive, and a great mentor and supervisor (was) V.G. Garner,” the business owner explained. Since 2005, he pointed out that Collins Propane has evolved into one of the best teams of which he has been a member. As an aside, Lee Onidas Collins settled in this area in 1865 and the Collins Propane office is part of the property that was the original settlement.

In his practice, Reif said he loves meeting people and the challenge of helping them achieve their specific health goal. “There is nothing more fulfilling than
helping that athlete get back on the field, or helping that mother or father who was told by a surgeon that they would never be normal again or able to pick up their kids without undergoing surgery,” he said. The most recent motivational book Reif has read is “How to Win Friends and Influence Enemies” by Dale Carnegie. He describes himself as passionate, caring and loyal, and loves to challenge himself and try new adventures. “Be the change you want to see in the world” is a slogan Reif adopted for himself, and he pointed out that his biggest challenge is letting go of work when he goes home at night.

Although he admits to a childhood dream of becoming a professional football player, Dr. John Davis switched directions and became a chiropractor, and is now voted Best Chiropractor in Murphy. Davis, of Advanced Chirosport, is still pursuing his sports dream to the extent that he is a sports-based practitioner who helps people recover from injuries. The doctor was reared in Denver and learned the construction trade from his father who is a contractor, and is thankful to have learned. One of his greatest strengths is the

The most recent book he has read is in his professional field, “Anatomy Trains” that addresses myofascial connections in the body. If he were to give advice to the next generation, Davis would tell them to get off their electronic games and start moving more and working harder because your health and well being depend on it.
A desire to help others led Dr. David Findura of Advanced Chirosport, voted Best Chiropractor in Murphy, to pursue a career in chiropractic medicine. To prepare for the field, he completed training in chiropractic school and took extra courses in soft tissue treatment and diagnosis. The training helps him be aware of patients’ abilities and progress so that they can enjoy

Seeing what chiropractic did for his father’s chronic back pain motivated Dr. Chase Vincent to pursue a career in chiropractic medicine, and now he is voted Best Chiropractor in Murphy. “My father had chronic back pain and our chiropractor allowed him to keep providing for our family,” Vincent, of Advanced Chirosport, said. He noted that he chose the field of chiropractic medicine to offer a drug and surgeryfree alternative to help people in pain. To get into practice, Vincent completed more than seven years of college, earning three bachelor’s degrees and a doctorate in chiropractic. What Vincent most loves about his profession is when patients report they are back to
healthy lives. Dr. Findura quotes actor Bruce Lee for his favorite quote, “The consciousness of self is the greatest hindrance to the proper execution of all physical ability.” The doctor describes himself in three words as caring, analytical and sarcastic. He declines to answer a question about what most people don’t know about him and explained, “If I tell you then they would know.”

He admits to a slight obsession with hot sauces with an entire shelf of sauces in his pantry, and quotes fictional racecar driver Ricky Bobby with his favorite motto, “If you’re not first, you’re last.” Vincent last read “Good to Great” and recommends it to small business owners. He is currently reading “Grain Brain” about the human diet. The doctor said his greatest challenge is raising his redheaded daughter. “Not sure I’m going to make it!” he declared, but noted that his real challenge is striving to be a better husband, father and clinician.
City Council Member Best of Murphy Betty Spraggins
Murphy City Council Winning any sort of award is a big accomplishment, and for Best City Council Member Betty Spraggins, she can stake the claim of winning it three times in a row. Betty said she was truly surprised when learning of taking top honors once again. “I just can’t believe it,” Spraggins said. “I am so thankful that the people of Murphy have the confidence in me to do what is best for the city. I am truly blessed.” Spraggins was elected to the Murphy City Council in 2013 and is currently up for re-election this year. Spraggins is heavily involved in all aspects of the city inside and outside. She is a member of the Chamber of Commerce and Dallas and Texas Restaurant Association. In addition, she has volunteered her time to the Anita Martinez Group fundraiser, Attorney Adelfa Callejo fundraiser and Kent Waldrep Charity event. Spraggins, along with husband of 45 years Wayne Spraggins, moved to Murphy in 2008 after living in Farmers Branch, Farmersville and Mexia over the years.
Spraggins has seen Murphy change in so many ways over the last eight years. “I remember when we moved to town, Murphy Road was just two lanes and now it’s six,” she said. “The EDC has done a good job of bringing in a lot of new businesses. The town has grown so much and hopefully will continue to be the cleanest and safest.” She has a vision for where she would like to see the city in five years. “I have a vision that in five years we will be completely built out, including all of our retail properties,” Spraggins said. “We need to complete our streets program and continue our sidewalk program. In addition to creating a maintenance program for all our parks.”

Sachse City Council Cullen King has been voted Best Sachse City Councilman. He is serving in the Place 5 seat, his second term on city council. Previously he served in Place 3 from May 2008 to May 2011. King attended the University of Texas at Arlington and is the Commercial Technical support Manager of the AMX brand at Harman International. “I’m involved in a number of community organizations,” he said. “First and foremost is North Pointe Church of Christ here in Sachse.” King is a member of the board of directors of the Sachse Historical Society and is involved with the Sachse Chamber of Commerce, a local Boy Scout Troop and Cub Pack 243. “The thing I most enjoy about being a councilmember is being a conduit that allows our citizens to voice their opinions to a great city staff,” he said. “Whether the issue is perceived to be big or small, I love being a small part of that resolution. My highest priority in serving our city is to help provide the maximum
amount of service for the lowest cost to the citizen. “My second priority is to be accessible to anyone about anything. I will always do my best to meet with or at least speak with any resident about any concern. I’m also available to listen to folks who want to tell us how we’re doing. “Overall, I don’t think I would be willing to do this kind of service for any other community. Sachse is very special.” He is active in local home school groups, Sachse Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service and involved with, but inactive, in CERT. “I have enjoyed the 13 years I have live here and look forward to many more,” said King.

Mayor Eric Hogue has been voted Wylie City Councilman of the Year. Hogue was born in Jonesboro, Ark., and learned magic and American Sign Language as a boy. He moved to Texas in 1989, and to Wylie in 1991. He was elected to the council in 2000 and mayor in 2008. He said he felt compelled to run for council because of his family’s philosophy. “I was always taught to give back, to be a servant leader. I’m glad to be able to give back to this community, my home.” Of his decision to run for mayor, he said he felt it was time for Wylie to “grow up,” to reach out and work with county commissioners and state and federal officials. Significant events during his tenure on the council include construction of the Wylie Municipal Complex, remodeling of many parks, the hike and bike trail, many retail establishments, the medical plaza, and improvements to all major thoroughfares. Hogue was named one of Collin County’s 21 Leaders for the 21st Century in 2010, and he received the Ethics Award

from the Rotary Club in 2013. The Grand Masonic Lodge of Texas awarded him the statewide Community Builder Award in 2014, and he was named Wylie Chamber of Commerce’s Citizen of the Year in 2014. He received a Presidential Citation from the Society of American Magicians and was recently named president of the governing board of the Texas School for the Deaf. “I want to thank the voters for their continued support,” he said. “I love being a representative for Wylie; it’s wonderful to be able to travel around and talk about the 25th best place in the country to call home!” Hogue’s wife Tammie works at Birmingham Elementary, and they have two sons, Zach and Mason.

Tiry Williams
Tiry Williams has been chosen “Best Community Activist” by the readers of The Sachse News. Williams is the owner of Williams Services. He graduated from Richland College, Southern Methodist University and is a two- time winner of the Sachse Chamber of Commerce Person of the Year Award. He was also honored with the SCC Horizon Award and served for two terms as Chamber Chairman of the Board. “It has been an honor to be chosen twice as Chairman of the SSC Board of Directors,” he said. “I was truly blessed to work with many talented, intelligent and passionate individuals. We shared and continue to share the same vision to make this the best chamber possible. Our members and citizens of Sachse deserve nothing short of that. Williams said he enjoys promoting the city and its businesses.
“I take great pride in representing the chamber and city at various forums I attend,” he said. “Good businesses are always essential to a great community. “ Williams has been chairman of the Sachse Fallfest and the Red, White and Blue Blast. He has judged the 4th of July Parade and participated in the Arbor Day Clean Up Events and various other city events. He has lived in Sachse for 13 years. “The people of Sachse make this a great place to live or work,” he said. “The city has experienced its share of growing pains but the friendliness of a small town still exists.”

He recalled that he volunteered in the Parkland Hospital Oral Surgery Department assisting with teeth extractions, but today prefers to save teeth if possible. “I would like to think that dentistry and I chose each other. I initially chose to go to dental school but while there, dentistry gave me so much more than I imagined. I am not just referring to the knowledge and hand skills to perform dentistry, but the relationships with classmates, professors, and patients,” the dentist said. Kang explained he loves helping people and dentistry allows him to do that in many ways, whether its alleviating discomfort, addressing concerns of a nervous patient, explaining treatment options, or simply listening to what a patient has to say.

Kang describes himself as quirky with a weird sense of humor, and he enjoys exercising. For wisdom and truth he refers to the Serenity Prayer, “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.” One thing that people may not know is that Kang has a weakness for anything licorice, but his saving grace after downing a couple twists of licorice is to brush and floss. “I think my greatest challenge is taking time to stop and appreciate my surroundings. It’s refreshing to pause, look around, and appreciate the blessings in my life,” he said.
Growing up next door to his family’s dentist motivated Dr. Charles Stetler of Wylie Dental Associates to pursue his career, and now he has been voted Best Dentist of the Year in Wylie. Stetler also pointed out that he wanted a profession in which he could help people. “I love meeting new people and helping them achieve their dental goals,” he said. The dentist earned a 4-year college degree then completed four years of dental school before he could begin his profession. He also is required to
complete 40-50 hours of continuing education annually. In three words, he described himself as professional, confident and honest. His favorite quote is, “Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.”-Gandhi. If Stetler pursued another career, he said he would work as a chef. The greatest challenge he faces is not being able to help all of the patients who need dental care.

Brandon Gibson, tied for Best Firefighter in this year’s Readers’ Choice poll. This is Blythe’s third time to be honored by The Wylie News readers; he won in this category in 2005 and 2006. He was born in Dallas and graduated from Wylie High School in 1993. He attended fire academy at Collin College and paramedic school at Methodist Hospital. He earned his associate degree from Weatherford College and his bachelor’s degree from Columbia Southern University. He began his career with Wylie FireRescue in 1993 as a volunteer firefighter. He volunteered or was part time until joining the department full time in 2003. He received the City of Wylie Commitment to Service Award in 2015; Wylie Fire Rescue Officer of the Year Award in 2004 and 2010; City of Wylie Newcomer of the Year Award, 2003; Wylie Fire Rescue Crew of the Year, 2003 and 2006; American Legion Post 368 Paramedic of the Year 1999; Wylie Fire Department Volunteer Officer of the Year Award in 1996; and Wylie Fire Department Volunteer Firefighter of the Year Award in 1995. His wife Melissa is a teacher at Harrison Intermediate, and they have four children:

He joined WFR in 2003 and was promoted to captain in 2012. He was named Paramedic of the Year by CareFlite in 2007 and received a Life Saver Award from WFR in 2014. Gibson and his wife Stephanie live in Wylie with their children, Wyatt, age 8, and Ruby, 3. “These two firefighters exemplify everything Wylie Fire Rescue stands for,” said Fire Chief Brent Parker. “I’m so honored readers voted for them, and I congratulate them on the recognition they deserve.”

For 14 years, Roy Cook, named Best Municipal/Government Employee, has worked tirelessly to provide clean, reliable, quality water to Wylie and the surrounding communities as a plant operator for the North Texas Municipal Water District. As one of NTMWD’s Lead Plant Operators, Cook is responsible for plant operations at the water treatment plant in Wylie. He also oversees the water treatment process, including the chemicals used to treat it, and distributes the clean, treated water from his control room at the Wylie headquarters. Before obtaining his class C water license and joining NTMWD, he learned all about wastewater treatment systems from the electronics industry. Electronics and water may seem like natural enemies, but the electronics industry produces a significant amount of wastewater that needs to be properly treated. Cook learned all about that process while building circuit boards and became interested in the water treatment process as a result.
A native of Trenton, Ohio, Cook moved to Texas more than 40 years ago when he relocated from Cincinnati to Garland. For the past 20 years though, he has lived right here in Wylie with his family. While he still owns some property in Ohio, he says Texas is his home. He loves spending time with his four grandchildren and is eagerly expecting the arrival of grandbaby number five, due any day now. “North Texas has been very good to me,” he said about working with NTMWD. “It’s a great place to work with lots of good people. I feel blessed to work somewhere where hard work pays off and people are rewarded for their efforts. I just really enjoy helping people.”

The City of Murphy offers a wide variety of community events throughout the year and Municipal Employee of the Year Caitlyn Mullins plays a big role in those offerings. As the Manager of Recreation Services, she oversees the recreation department which includes recreation classes and programs, facility reservations including indoor room and basketball court rentals and scheduling, Community Center memberships as well as athletic field, pavilion, amphitheater or special event reservations. Mullins also manages the city’s special events, including Murphy Maize Days, Christmas in the Park, Rainbow Trout Roundup, Moonlight Movies, Sounds at Sundown Concert Series, Arbor Day, and new this year; Tunes, Tails and Ales, Murphy’s first annual Craft Beer Festival. She joined the city in 2010 and at that time they didn’t have a designated recreation facility. The department was made up of one full-time staff member and two part time staff members. It now consists of four parttime and a pair of full-time recreation specialists and a special events coordinator. Mullins has seen the city grow in
many different areas on the recreation side since 2010. “They were smaller in scale back in 2010, but with the other events we have added have grown to become established events that we continue to offer. Along with our events, we have developed many partnerships with local groups, organizations, schools and businesses that have grown our volunteer base dramatically,” she said. “In 2010, we had 55 volunteers help out at our community events. Today we average around 700 volunteers per year at all of our events. Additionally, Murphy now has an outdoor amphitheater, the Murphy Community Center and the Murphy Activity Center that allow us more programming and rental opportunities.” Mullins currently resides in Allen with her husband, one-year-old daughter and two dogs, which were adopted from the Murphy Animal Shelter.
Municipal Employee Best of Sachse Teresa Savage City of Sachse A veteran of muncipal government, Finance Director Teresa Savage, has been named Municipal Employee of the Year for the city of Sachse. Savage went to work in Sachse as Finance Manager in 2010 and was promoted to Finance Director in 2013. Previously she worked for the city of Geneseo, Ill., starting in 1998 as an accountant and progressing through the ranks to City Administrator until leaving to move back to Texas. Savage earned a Bachelor of
Business Administration degree at East Texas State University and holds the designation of Certified Government Financial Officer from the Government Finance Officers Association.
After deciding that medical school might not be the best fit, Dr. Michael Fesler opted for dental school and is glad he made the switch. Fesler has been voted Best Orthodontist in Murphy. “A smile means so much, and in orthodontics it is so rewarding to see the transformation that braces can actually bring to a person’s smile and self esteem,” Fesler said. “I wanted to be a part of that.” The doctor earned a degree in Health-Science Studies at Baylor University followed by four years at Baylor College of Dentistry and two more years of orthodontic residency to be able to specialize in orthodontics.

What appeals most in his profession is getting to help children all day and often seeing them reach their potential. Fesler was also a former orthodontics patient, but he did not get braces until after he started work in the profession. He describes himself as very detail oriented, which is a bonus in orthodontics. “Orthodontics is a great field for a perfectionist, but is challenging to meet my own high standards in every case,” Fesler said.

Kapadia explained that his father was a dentist, and that as a child and an adult he wore braces which convinced him that he wanted to help create new smiles. “I am very intrigued with the face and the fact that aligning teeth can change a person’s self-confidence and self-image,” he said. The orthodontist graduated at the top of his class at Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine and completed two years of specialist train-
ing and orthodontic residence at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. He practiced for six years prior to opening his own office in Sachse. Kapadia admitted that he loves reading comic books, instead of motivational books, but may give audio books a try. He describes himself as caring, knowledgeable and generous, and advises others to do more of what makes them happy. The orthodontist sees his greatest challenge as being able to balance work, family, fitness, sleep and friends.

Billy Mitchell Murphy Police Department An ad in a small town newspaper translated into a lengthy career in law enforcement. At the ripe age of 21, Police Officer of the Year Billy Mitchell was looking for steady work when he saw an ad in a paper in the town of Aubrey here we was living at the time. He applied for the job and soon after that became a member of the Texoma Police Academy in January 1986. Prior to entering the police department, Mitchell, who was born in Dallas and later moved to Durant, OK, worked as a land surveyor. After working in several small towns, he ended up in Murphy and has been with the department for the last 15 years. He is assigned to the patrol division and also serves as the department’s firearms and taser instructor. There are many things that Mitchell likes about Murphy, but near the top of the list is the small town feel.
Vernon Doggett has been chosen Police Officer of the Year. Doggett started his career in law enforcement in 1971 and started working at the Sachse PD when he and his family moved here in 1996. Doggett has several associates and bachelor’s degrees, and two masters’ degrees. He is a Master Peace Officer, with a Basic Instructors, Investigator and numerous other licenses. “Being a School Resource Officer is the greatest job in law enforcement,” he said. “Not only do you get to protect the kids but you get to help train them for what life is going to throw at them.” Doggett said he has been blessed to have three great bosses including Chief Sylvester. “But what makes this a great job is the people of Sachse. My family and I

“My favorite thing is that even with all the growth we have had over the years it still has the small town appeal,” he said. During his 15 years on the force, the city of Murphy’s population has gone from around 4,000 residents to 20,000 or more. Mitchell pointed out that there are many difficult and rewarding parts in being a police officer. “The most difficult part of being a police officer now is how that one percent of the public feels towards law enforcement today. The best part is that you may have made a significant change for the positive in somebody’s life when nothing seems to be going right for them,” he said.”
Readers chose Sgt. Donna Valdepena, of the Wylie Police Department, as this year’s Best Police Officer. Valdepena was born in Madison, WI, one of 13 children and was, she said, “the only one to move away.” She earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice administration from American Intercontinental University. She holds a master’s police officer license and is a graduate of the Institute for Law Enforcement Administration Management College. A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, she is also a former campus police officer for the University of New Mexico, a former Alabama State Trooper, and former Dallas Area Rapid Transit special investigator. Valdepena joined the Wylie Police Department in October 2003. She is a graduate of the city’s Individual Career Advancement Navigation program and was recognized as the 2008 City Em-
ployee of the Year by her peers. Wylie PD named her Wylie Police Supervisor of the Year in 2010. She and her husband of 24 years, Wayne Valdepena Jr., have four children and seven grandchildren. “Sgt. Valdepena exemplifies what it means to be a true police professional,” said Chief Anthony Henderson. “She genuinely cares for this department, the city and the community she serves. I have had the privilege of working with Sgt. Valdepena for several years and can’t think of an officer more deserving of this award. Nancy Humphrey, named the Plano ISD “Best School Board Member” shared her enthusiasm for her position on the board and gratefulness for the honor. She originally ran for the position to serve to serve her community in a purposeful manner, supporting the education of children. “I truly view this as a calling,” she said. “I had served in multiple leadership positions within the PTAs and booster clubs in my children’s schools, making valuable community connections. I then realized I could reach more and do more by serving as a member of the Plano ISD Board of Trustees, and felt my experience in public accounting would be valuable to the Board.” In her six years on the Board, she has served as vice president (two years) and president (three years). “Being board president has its challenges, and I accept the challenges willingly,” she said. Her goals include the continuation of a plan started in October 2015 for
Heather Smyder, an English teacher at Burnett Junior High, knew from an early age she wanted to enter a profession that helped others. “I was a senior in high school when I realized that teaching was going to be that path for me,” she said. Teachers had been in her family for several generations and many teachers throughout her school career (many of them Wylie teachers) had made an impact on her. “Growing up, I knew that teachers work hard, but I guess I didn’t realize how much of myself I would pour in to this job,” she said. “It not only takes mental knowledge to be a teacher, but there is an emotional and spiritual strength that needs to be there as well.” “True educators never quit learning themselves and are always looking for new and innovative ways to meet today’s youth,” she said. When Smyder first began teaching, her

Mitch Herzog was named the “Best School Board Member” for Wylie ISD and shared his great thanks to the community for the acknowledgement. Herzog said that being chosen for the recognition is humbling. “People have said to me ‘why in the world would you do this if you don’t get paid’,” he said. “Sometimes it is tough, but at the end of the day WISD needs people who care and love the community and are willing to serve. Trust me when I say it’s worth it.” “Being a Wylie ISD trustee means meeting the needs of the teachers and students while still maintaining our fiduciary duties,” Herzog said. “I am so proud of what we have accomplished. We are a district that other districts want to mimic.” Challenges that Herzog recalls include several failed bonds due to what he says

This will be his fourth year as Sachse High School Principal and 14th year as administrator in GISD, a total of 19 years in public education. Merrill earned a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science from Stephen F. Austin and a Master of Education from Texas A&M Commerce. “I am involved in most student activities,” he said. “I loved to see them putting in all the hard work and then representing themselves and their school when they compete. Some of my duties can be a grind but it never gets old seeing students working really hard and then recognized and rewarded.” Merrill said he keeps a pulse on his student body. “Our students know Sachse High
were at the hands of WISD leaders loosing the public’s trust. “We have regained that trust through our transparency,” he said. “Our current challenge is the community growing at such a fast pace. We are trying to be proactive by looking ahead three to five years.” Herzog added that the Wylie ISD Board of Trustees is a very efficient and productive board. “We work well together and all share the same vision for Wylie ISD,” he said. “Each person serving on this board is deserving of this award.”

Ballard Ave., Wylie, TX 75098 972-442-0860 coffeetexas.com A lot has changed in the nearly 20 years since Shoemaker & Hardt first opened their doors in Downtown Wylie. While much is new in town, the most important things have not changed inside the 100-year-old walls of the coffee shop. You can still get a great cup of coffee, latte or frappuccino. Their famous whip cream is still hand-made every day from real dairy cream. The place is always full of interesting things to wear, decorate with or give as gifts and you can still find a hot game of checkers at the back of the store. OK, the place has a bit of pleasant weirdness about it. It’s hard to say whether it’s the taxidermy baboon or the artificial legs strewn around, but somehow, in an unexplainable way, people like it and keep coming back. Somehow, they like the ever-changing sameness of the place. Store friends that came as children are now bringing their
Kenzie children to Shoemaker & Hardt. Maybe they want to show their kids the marbles or the old fashioned candy. Could be the magnetic rocks or the horseshoe puzzles. It’s fun and reliable. More important than all this though, are the things that do not have price tags. Things like honor and respect, the belief in America and the Constitution, faith and prayer. You still hear ‘please’ and ‘thank-you’ and an occasional ‘I’m sorry’ floating through the store; the priceless gestures that long outlive the fads and passions of the moment. While some regard these as old-fashioned sentiments of the past, they are alive and well in an unusual little shop in Downtown Wylie called Shoemaker & Hardt.

The Greaves first became involved in the fast food business while they were still in school. “Terry and I both worked for the wonderful Jerry Rose at his Taco Delite in Plano when we were in school,” said Melisa. “Now, 35 years later, it has been the only job Terry has ever had.”

Taco Delite Continued from pg. 37 Consistency is the underlying philosophy in everything they do. They take pride in the fact that customers know what they are getting when they come to Taco Delite. A large portion of freshly made, quality food, prepared just how customers like it. The Greaves say there are several things that set them apart from other fast food restaurants. “I believe our most loyal and loved customers would say it’s the food as well as the fellowship,” said Melisa. “We enjoy getting to know our customers as well as serving them.” Since Taco Delite is owner-operated, they believe that fact brings a lot to their

business, as well as, their long standing employees. Many of their staff have been with them for 10-15 years and they like the fact that they see the same smiling faces day after day. Their customers make it easy to stay motivated. “When someone new comes in and returns to the counter when they have finished their meal just to say how great it was…that makes it all worthwhile.” The Greaves admit that keeping an eye on the future is always a challenge. “Keeping up with the new growth coming to our neighborhood is important. We might not be the newest place in town but we will always serve the best food at reasonable prices with the freshest ingredients.”

Named Best of Healthy Fare by our readers, Taste of Home’s motto is “Where great food meets great atmosphere.” Around since 1999, owner Kathy Godwin can usually be found greeting customers at the front desk, checking on orders or busy doing any number of other things to help keep her business running smoothly and her customers happy. She believes it is her ministry to serve the community Kathy’s business originally started as a large antique shop in the downtown area. The back portion of her building was leased to a tearoom. “When they decided to close up shop, we decided to take over,” she said. This quaint restaurant, located in a renovated 1901 farmhouse at the north end of Ballard, offers a unique atmosphere like none other. “ It feels like you’re coming to Grandma’s house,” Kathy said. “ Having an event venue for up to 38 people for
showers, birthday parties, meetings, anniversary dinners and other gatherings is certainly a rarity for restaurants nowadays.” Combined with the charm they offer, you have a much sought-after destination location for special events. Taste of Home offers quality homemade comfort food including many options for health conscious guests. “Our amazing staff has a work ethic that is old-fashioned. They live by the Golden Rule and try to reflect that in their daily lives. Customer service for Kathy and her staff means going out of their way to make everyone feel like they are family every time they visit the restaurant. “Truth be known, many have become our family,” Kathy said. Wylie’s growth keeps this business on their toes with many restaurants. “We are challenged daily to simply do what we do and do it well. What we offer here can’t be found in a chain restaurant.”

Golden Chick has been operating in Murphy for over six years and owner Freddie Montemayor said he was drawn to the area because of the potential growth. “We wanted to be part of the rapid growth,” said Montemayor. “We found this great location and knew it was the place to be.” Golden Chick takes pride in being the ‘original’ and still the best, when it comes to his restaurant. “We offer exceptional customer service and operate under the assumption that the customer is always right,” he said. “We are basically in the ‘yes’ business.” Montemayor also feels that another fact that sets them apart from their competition is their employees. He said his staff knows how
important they are to the restaurant. Happy employees make happy customers. He also mentioned it’s not hard to stay motivated when you understand that as a small business owner and job creator, the things he does day to day make a difference in peoples lives. “We are so glad to be part of the Murphy area,” said Montemayor. “All the local business and the community are always kind and respectful to one another. Murphy has the small town feel with the benefits of living in a large city. We look forward to growing within the community and succeeding in helping others.”
A move from Littleton, Colo., in 1990 brought Sonic Drive-In to Wylie, and the eating place is recognized this year as providing the Best Inexpensive Lunch in town. Rich and Beth Marwin, who made the move south from Colorado, own the business. “My father-in-law was already in the Sonic business,” Rich said. “He presented us with an opportunity we couldn’t refuse, so I guess the business picked us.” The couple follows a business philosophy that quality is worth the wait, and takes pride in making sure
that every customer leaves happy. What sets Sonic apart from its competition are its carhops, a throwback to a less hectic time that no other restaurant offers these days. “I value being a vital part of this community,” Rich said. “It is important to us to not only be a great place to eat, but also to be a great place to work.” As to the future, the couple will continue working to stay ahead of increasing competition, while maintaining a high level of quality of service.
