Underclassmen will lead the charge

sports@farmersvilletimes.com One season ago, the Farmers roster featured 14 seniors, most of whom were starters.

This year’s group will be completely different, with just nine.

The remaining athletes will be underclassmen, whom played on varsity or were on one of the subvarsity squads.

“We just have to continue to grow. The kids have been in our system, so they know what is going on,” head coach Sammy Burnett said. “They just have to get out there and learn the speed of the game at the varsity level, which is going to be the biggest challenge. We are going to take our lumps early, but hopefully we will still be good enough to pick up some wins.”

That group will be challenged early and often with a tough non-district slate.

Farmersville is scheduled to host Community (Sept. 4), Emory Rains (Sept. 11) and Bonham (Sept. 18 on Senior Night).

Road games are against Cooper (Friday) and Kemp (Sept. 25).

ing to have our hands full for sure.”

Following an off week, the Farmers kick off District 5-3A Div. I on the road versus Pottsboro.

That is followed by contests at Whitesboro (Oct. 16), with Callisburg (Oct. 23), at Van Alstyne (Oct. 3) and with Pilot Point (Nov. 6 on Parents Night).

“I feel like we are in one of the toughest districts in the North Texas area, at any classification,” Burnett said. “I think from top to bottom our district is pretty solid.”

All games are slated for 7:30 p.m., with home games scheduled to be played at Fightin’ Farmers Stadium upon completion.

In early predictions, the 2015 edition of Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine, picked the Farmers for third place.

Above them were defending champion Pottsboro and Pilot Point, with Whitesboro earning the fourth seed.

Out of the top four were Van Alstyne (fifth) and Callisburg (sixth).

Pilot Point’s DaCoven Bailey was the preseason offensive MVP and defensively was Pottsboro’s Patton Lyons.

One season ago, Farmersville ended up 7-4 overall and second in district at 3-2.

They were tied for the second spot with Pilot Point, before beating the host Bearcats in the district and season finale at Massey Stadium.

Returning pieces to aid in rebuilding

sports@farmersvilletimes.com Farmersville will have some holes to fill on the offensive, defensive and special teams side of the ball.

One area that looks pretty good is the offense, thanks to the return of most of the offensive line and skill position players.

Back in the fold are quarterback Chase Hacker (143-of-236 for 2,212, 22 touchdowns and four interceptions, and 184 on 49 carries for two touchdowns, all last season), receiver-running back Caleb Twyford (53 receptions for 1,033 and 13 scores, and 335 off 48 carries and four touchdowns), tight end Brady Elliott (six catches for 63 yards and two scores), offensive linemen Emmanuel Castillo, Marvin Smith and Lyle Hibbits.

“I think we should be fine at the skill positions. We will have to fill the other spots left open by graduation,” head coach Sammy Burnett said.

Over an 11 game span, last year’s group averaged 428 yards per game and 36 points.

The Farmers defense will look completely different in 2015.

They will depend heavily on a crop of younger athletes.

“We will have to rely on some of the younger guys that are coming in,” Burnett said. “We are going to be young on that side of the ball. Hopefully by the time district rolls around we will be more experienced and we will have weathered those storms.”

Last year’s group gave up 356 yards a contest and an average of 30 points.

Like every other season, special teams will be a work in progress.

Hacker is slated to take on the punting duties from graduate Cole Anderson.

“I feel pretty good about having Chase back there,” Burnett said. “He backed up Cole last season, but could have stepped in and started if we needed.”

In the kicking department, former subvarsity member Will Vallow is slated to replace Fernando Salas, who handled all the kicking duties in 2014.

“Our biggest question mark heading into the offseason was how we were going to replace Fernando,” Burnett said. “Will didn’t get to do much kicking last year, since we

didn’t do it. He came to me during the offseason and told me he could kick. We went out there and he could kick. He has been to a few kicking camps this summer.

I think he is going to be a bright spot. I’m

really looking forward to him getting out there and get after it. We are really excited about his potential and what he can do.”

Salas nailed 51-point after and a pair of field goals for 57 total points.

The Lady Farmers bring back a talented crop of talent that is playoff tested.

“I am very excited about the upcoming season. Most of my varsity and several of my subvarsity players played another sea-

son of club and summer league, and they worked hard in the offseason,” head coach Harold Davis said. “We have a shot this year to go deep in the playoffs.”

Back from last year’s district title winning and regional quarterfinal squad are seniors J’Kaylee Clark, Arianna Brooks and Karlee Young.

Young returns after missing last season with a knee injury that she sustained during a scrimmage.

Farmersville will compete in District 13-3A, along with Caddo Mills (regional semifinalist), Commerce (bi-district finalist), Leonard, Lone Oak, Tom Bean, Van

Alstyne (regional semifinalist) and Whitewright.

In preparation for a competitive district and prolonged playoff run, the non-district slate will provide a tough challenge.

“I strengthened our preseason schedule this year. We needed to play some tougher competition to help us get through our tough district and go deeper in the playoffs this year,” he said. “If we stay healthy this year it could be a real fun year.”

On the boys side, back are Ty Rolen, Kelcey Kasper, Clayton Campbell, Michael Chiappone, Bowen McClure and Tim Barber.

For the girls are Kyleigh Kasper, Linsey Laube, Miryam Arceo, Shayna Cooper and Hailey Cooper.

“I believe both can finish in the top three of district and run as a team at the regional meet,” head coach Christopher Lowry said.

“Depending on how we develop, I believe both can be district champs, and both can improve greatly on last year’s regional finishes.”

As a whole, with the high and junior high teams, the number of runners has grown greatly over this time last season.

“I am very excited about this upcoming season. We have had an increase in the number of runners we will have. We have enough to run six total teams. All six will have a shot to win a team district cham-

It will definitely be a challenge to win a district championship, but I feel our kids can. We have a couple of different meets on the schedule, which should be fun for our kids.”
