New coaching staff takes over program

By David Jenkins Staff Writer

sports@princetonherald.com Things will look different on the Princeton sideline during the 2017 season.

In addition to a new head coach in Clint Surratt, there are new assistants at nearly every position.

Through all the changes the Panthers have bought in and are looking for another successful year.

“The kids have bought in to what we as a coaching staff are doing. We also have some good senior leadership,” Surratt said.

“I’m excited to see how the kids perform in the fall and where they can take this team.”

He added, “Our mantra is to win the day and to be the best player and teammate you can be, and the kids have done that.”

New to the program are Stu Johnson (defensive coordinator), Derrick Ware (offensive coordinator), Kelvin Drake (co-offensive line), Neal Tull (co-offensive line), Leroy Mansanales (outside linebackers), Larry Edgemon (inside linebackers), Kevin Maduka (corners) and Ryan DeLavergne (freshman team).

Holdovers are Ervin Chandler (defensive line), Chase Willingham (slot receivers) and Kent Ackmann (wide receivers).

“We have a good coaching staff in place.

It took a while to get all of them hired, but we got it done,” Surratt said.

That crop of coaches and the Panthers kick off the predistrict slate 7:30 p.m. Friday on the road against Celina. which fell last season on the road.

That is followed by with Van (Sept. 8) and Carrollton Creekview (Sept. 15 for Homecoming), at Frisco Reedy (Sept. 22 at The Star in Frisco) and with Melissa (Sept.

29 on Back the Blue Night).

Squad a mixture of youth, experience

sports@princetonherald.com Princeton enters the season with a solid mixture of senior players and young talent that saw the field in 2016.

After being thrust into the starting spot as a freshman, Brendon Strickland will lead the offense from quarterback.

“The system that he’s in is going to be very beneficial for him. He’s going to be able to throw it around a lot and we have some good guys for him to throw to,” head coach Clint Surratt said. “He’s a very mature kid and I’m excited to see what he does.”

Strickland will have a wealth of skill position players to get the ball to.

Top returning targets are Alex Flores, Philip Mayfield, Tristan Gee, Maika Brinkerhoff and Jacob Purdon.

Kole Massey will be a new addition.

“I want our identity to be a team that plays fast and knows how to make plays,” Surratt said. “We have a lot of skills guys returning and I feel great about those players.”

Anchoring the line will be returnees Jake Lacey and DeAndre Nobles.

Nobles saw limited playing time last season.

The defense welcomes back Quinton Goodwin, Elmer Cruz, Colton Malone, Cory Owens, Lucas Delgado, Brandon Gonzalez and Jacob Purdon.

Decarius Cook (former junior varsity player) and Chris Suarez are new additions.

“I think our defense is going to be the strongest part of this team, especially in the secondary,” Surratt said.

For the first time in a long while, Princeton is faced with placing a kicker, after the graduation of Julio Vasquez.

Surrett commented that they have a couple of players that could fill that role.

“Coach (Ken) Ackmann has been working with a couple of kids on the side. I think we are going to have a good kicking competition. We might end up having a kick off guy and a field goal guy,” Surratt said.

Roster filled with underclassmen

sports@princetonherald.com Princeton’s 2017 volleyball roster looks much different from last years.

After losing six seniors to graduation, there will be just two in Alyssa Rivera and Iris Carrillo.

Junior’s Laura Staley, Faith Gunther and Athena Kirby are stepping will step in to claim a larger portion of the leadership role.

Sophomore Sydney Bazan moved up from junior varsity last season and will see more playing time this year.

Presley Shearin, spent last season as the JV setter, will be taking over that role with the varsity team.

Princeton will also get an added boost from incoming freshmen Ella Baird, Julie Milligan, Summer Starr and Brianna Barch.

“We’ll have a very young team this year.

We lost a lot of decorated talent in that senior class, but I believe these ladies are looking to makes names for themselves and their team, and build on the legacy of those graduated seniors,” second-year head coach Maurice Lock said.

Matches left on the predistrict slate are at cross-lake rival Farmersville (4:30 p.m.

Sept. 1) and Van Alstyne (6 p.m. Sept. 5), with Gainesville (6 p.m. Sept. 12 on Clark Junior High Recognition Night) and Argyle (6 p.m. Sept. 19).

District play kicks off 4:30 p.m. Sept. 22 with Melissa. Games left in the first round are with Celina (6 p.m. Sept. 26), at Anna (4:30 p.m. Sept. 29) and Bonham (6 p.m.

Oct. 3), and with Aubrey (4:30 p.m. Oct. 6).

Second half matches are at Melissa (6 p.m. Oct. 10) and Celina (4:30 p.m. Oct. 13), with Anna (6 p.m. Oct. 17 on Dig Pink Night) and Bonham (4:30 p.m. Oct. 20 for Senior Night), and at Aubrey (6 p.m. Oct. 24).

Programs looking for more success

sports@princetonherald.com Another season of Princeton cross country is underway.

Both squads bring back multiple runners from the 2016 campaign.

Back in the mix for girls head coach Maurice Hill are state meet qualifier Athena Kirby, Melissa Avila, Katelyn Bailey, Marlene Gurrola, Lizbeth Barreto, Alisa Anguiano, Maria Hernandez, Marissa Gaytan, Fatima Guerrero, Lesley Saldana and Elizabeth Maya Gomez.

Moving up from Clark Junior High are Launa Fisher, Olivia Gaytan, Lizete Montalvo, Amaris Jasso and Bria Dillard, whom should give the team some good depth.

“This year will be the best girls team I have had since I took over,” Hill said.

“I am really excited and believe we will be very successful. The girls put in a ton

of work this summer and it will pay off.”

Returning under boys head coach Bradley Patterson are Jose Almaguer, brothers Angulano and Charlye Guerro, Anthony McDonald, Gustavo Fuentes, Bryan Lerma and Brian Landa Also expected to contribute in 2017 are Fernando Anchondo Garcia and Victor Sanchez.

“Most of the guys are young, so excitement of the possibilities are high,” Patterson said. “They are motivated on being very competitive in our district and have a hunger to qualify, and become a strong team at the regional meet.”

Princeton opened things up Aug. 26 in the Frisco ISD meet at Warren Sports Complex.

They return to action Sept. 9 in the Tyler Lee Invitational on the campus of the University of Texas at Tyler.

The District 11-4A meet is slated for Oct. 18 at Collin County Adventure Camp in Anna.
