Large senior class set to lead charge
By David Jenkins Staff Writer
sports@princetonherald.com One season ago, the Panthers relied on a large share of juniors to power the offense, defense and special teams. This time around that group of 23 seniors will be looking to build on what they accomplished in 2014. “Compared to last year when we had 13 seniors, this year I think we have 23, and they know what to expect,” head coach Lee Wilkins said. “They know how that first game is going to be and how that 10th game is going to be. All of them played on offense, defense and special teams. There is nothing new that can happen to them that they haven’t experienced already.” Returning on the offensive side are quarterback Colt Collins (2,390 yards and 28 passing touchdowns, and 318 for six touchdowns on the ground in 2014), outside receiver Sadavion Matthews (464 and eight scores), running back George Flores (1,022 for 16 touchdowns on the ground and 157 receiving), tight endinside receiver-H-back Brandon Talley (685 and four scores through the air), receiver Daniel Hernandez (192 and one
rushing score, and 170 receiving), offensive linemen Cody Morrow and Fernando Valenzuela Also expected to contribute this year is junior varsity call-up wide receiver Kai Brinkerhoff. The defense returns ends Dylan Templeman and Cristian Garcia, nose guards River Carey and Keylynn Rushing, back Dylan Price and linebacker Wyatt Abbott. Also chipping in will be JV move ups Benny Montoya, Regan Wilkins and Race Karlin. Princeton will switch to the 3-4 scheme, after running the 4-3 formation in previous seasons. The 3-4 formation consists of three down linemen and four linebackers, in addition to two cornerbacks and a pair of safeties. On special teams, Juan Vasquez is back to handle the extra point duties and three pointers. Vasquez nailed 41-point afters and five field goals last season. Punting chores will be split between Collins, Talley and Vasquez. Hernandez will field kicks in the punt and kick offs. Also expected to contribute with return duties are Philip Mayfield, Flores and Matthews.

Dedication has been the driving force
By David Jenkins Staff Writer
sports@princetonherald.com The key to the Panthers success over the past several years has been the dedication of its athletes. They expect for that to continue during the coming 2015 campaign. “The kids come to compete every day, that is the best thing about these kids,” head coach Lee Wilkins said. “We are never going to pass the eye test when we get off the bus. We are not going to be the fastest or the biggest, but what we are going to do is compete each and every day. There is no game that they go in that they think they are outmanned or they are going to get beat. There is no lead too big if we are ahead or behind. They are always going to compete and find a way to win.” A big part of that dedication has come from the 27 seniors, most of which were starters as juniors last season. “The kids do a good job and make our
jobs extremely easy when they come ready to work each and every day, and want to get better,” Wilkins said. After finishing second to Texarkana Liberty-Eylau in District 7-4A Div. I in 2014, the Panthers are looking for retribution. “I think our kids are going to go out and compete for a (district) title,” Wilkins said. “I think we will give them both (Paris and Liberty-Eylau) a good game.” Also in that grouping are Paris, Paris North Lamar, Pittsburg and Quinlan Ford. “It is a tough district for sure,” Wilkins said. “Paris and Liberty-Eylua are going to be good. I wouldn’t look past Pittsburg and (Quinlan) Ford though. Last year (Paris) North Lamar beat us. Paris and LibertyEylau are the front runners.” Princeton’s schedule will flip this season, as they are scheduled to play three home games in non-district. Those are against Fort Worth Arlington Heights (Sept. 4), Greenville (Sept. 11) and Crandall (Sept. 18 for Homecoming). “To be honest I would have rather had

it the other way around last year,” Wilkins said. “The way that the schedule mapped out we just couldn’t do it. Obviously it is always better to play at home. Any time you can play at home it has its benefits. We are going to need to play at home to have a chance to beat Greenville, Arlington Heights and Crandall.” Other games are on the road against Frisco Independence (Thursday at Frisco’s Toyota Stadium) and Gainesville (Sept. 25). “I think our non-district schedule is one of the toughest that we’ve had in a while,” Wilkins said. “I’m not looking forward to those games, I can tell you that. I think it’s going to be a ball game each and every week.” During district the Panthers welcome Paris (Oct. 16) and Pittsburg (Oct. 30 for Senior Night) to town, and travel to Quinlan Ford (Oct. 9), North Lamar (Oct. 23) and Liberty-Eylau (Nov. 6). All games start at 7:30 p.m., with home games at Jackie Hendricks Stadium.

Experience fills out roster for this year By David Jenkins Staff Writer
sports@princetonherald.com Experience will be on the Lady Panthers side during the coming 2015 campaign. Back in the mix are juniors Setter of the Year BriAna Lacey (setter), co-Offensive Most Valuable Player Shelbi Cook (middle blocker), Astraea Wayman (outside hitter) and Sara Wood (middle blocker), seniors Raygan Cook (outside hitter), Jayla Williams (outside hitter-middle blocker), Lindsey Tarby and Ali Saldivar (both defensive specialist). “I think this group has an advantage over a lot of the teams we will be facing. They have been playing together for the last two years, some longer than that, and they know how to read each other,” head coach Randi Trew said. “They really seem to be in sync. Where most teams have to fill holes and figure out whom to put where, we are just reloading. It’s a pretty good feeling to have going into August.” Princeton came up just short of making the playoffs for a second straight season in 2014. They fell 25-17, 15-25, 23-25, 25-20, 10-15 to Quinlan Ford in a fourth place tiebreaker in District 12-4A. Both were tied at 3-7. This years group will look to return to

Raygan Cook (11) and Jayla Williams (10) are two-of-four seniors back in the mix for 2015. the playoffs, as they will compete for the final time in 12-4A. “We are really looking forward to this season,” Trew said. “We have a roster of veterans and are excited to see what they produce on the court together.”
In that grouping are Melissa, Quinlan Ford, Bonham and Community, and Anna. Princeton predistrict slate will feature several tough challenges before the start of the second half. “We don’t try and do ourselves any
favors with our schedule. The schedule challenges us each night and that’s what we want,” Trew said. “We don’t have any “gimme games”. We will have to work every match, and that’s what is going to carry us into November.”
Runners working to build on ’14 success By David Jenkins Staff Writer
sports@princetonherald.com Princeton enjoyed its fair share of success during the 2014 campaign. They will be looking for more of the same this time around. “The guys are anxious to compete. Our challenge is to get at least five guys running within 30 seconds of each other by the district meet,” head coach Brad Patterson said. “We are working hard at building an attitude that we pull each other along both in practice and in the upcoming races.” Back in the mix for the Panthers under first-year leader Patterson are Cody Walker, Douglas Glover, Nathan Roets, Julian Martinez, Isael Rocha and Lucas Delgado. “The guys have their sights set
on getting better. They are excited about the possibilities of the season,” Patterson said. “Most of them only have a year or two of experience running, so the potential is very high, and with that said the guys are eager to show what they can do.” Returning for the girls are Genesis Deleon, Juliana Myrick, Alisa Anguiano, Sarah Mukweyi and Alexis Castaneda. “I believe we’re young, but really talented and full of potential,” head coach Maurice Hill said. “I am very excited about the upcoming season. I feel like we have some good young talent to continue to build a strong team.” Taking over the lead spot is Hill, who led the boys last year and replaces Carrie Croan for the girls. Princeton will compete once again in District 12-4A, along with

Anna, Bonham, Community, Melissa and Quinlan Ford. Both teams opened the season Aug. 22 in the Frisco ISD meet at Warren Park. Meets left before district are the Tyler Lee Invitational (Sept. 5), McKinney Boyd Invitational (Sept. 12 at Myers Park), Princeton Invitational (Sept. 19), Haltom City Invitational (Sept. 24 for boys), Ennis Invitational (Sept. 26 at Jaycee Park for girls), Ken Gaston Invitational (Oct. 1 at Lynn Creek Park in Grand Prairie) and Ponder Invitational (Oct. 7). The 12-4A meet will be ran at Melissa’s Country Ridge Park, with details still to be finalized. That is followed by the Oct. 27 Class 4A Region II meet at Lynn Creek Park and state is Nov. 17 at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock. Herald
