Familiarity breeds confidence
Second-year coaching staff, veteran players ready to return Panthers to prominence By Greg Ford Sports Editor
sports@csmediatexas.com A year ago, Plano East’s coaching staff and players spent the entire season just getting used to each other. That’s not the case in 2015, and that’s good news. What’s even better news on the offensive side is that PESH returns a slew of talent, both at the ball handling and nonball handling positions. “A lot of people talk about our skill positions being as good as anybody in the district,” head coach Joey McCullough said. That’s is most notable at wide receiver, where East returns a highly-talented group that includes seniors Ade Omotosho, Tim Wilson and Zadok Wilson. Also, there are juniors Cameron Moore, Michael Folorunso and Brian Shelton (the latter two coming off the JV), as well as senior tight end Carson Young. Omotosho led the receiving corps with 31 catches for nearly 600 yards and four touchdowns. They all will provide some top-notch targets for junior Miklo Smalls, who returns at quarterback after throwing for nearly 900 yards and 11 touchdowns. “He’s very comfortable in this offense,” McCullough said. “He knows his role. We don’t want him to run the ball as much, with the running backs that we have in our system … He’ll run to keep people honest, but his job is to hand it off and throw it.” East’s two-back set has been strengthened by the arrival of senior Desmond Bowden, who comes over from the defunct Prime Prep Academy. “He’ll be our leader in the backfield … and he’s gained about 22 pounds since he’s been here,” McCullough said. “He had an unbelievable offseason and summer … We expect him to lead us.” Three sophomores, Trey Hunter, Jonathan Meadors and Nathan Miller, each should see some carries this season. “In our offense, with the two-back set, we may need all four of those guys to save their bodies,” McCullough said. In order for the passing and running games to succeed, the Panthers must be solid up front. McCullough says they are, adding that the offensive line is probably the “most improved” area of the team. Senior Dane Cordell returns at center, with fellow seniors Cole Moore, Vincent Pham, Jordan LeCompte (a move-in) and Desmond Relford also expected to see time on the line. Others likely to see snaps are junior left tackle Casey Verhulst, junior tackle Jahmal Taylor, sophomore Tyler Barna, senior James Kelly and sophomore Trey Hempstead, the latter being over 6-0 tall and 220 pounds, and who’ll likely start out on the JV team. “We want to have two-deep (at each position), and that’s what we’re kind of getting,” McCullough said. 4-3 scheme designed to maximize defense’s talents The Panther defense will have a new look this fall, or at least one it hasn’t sported in a while. Gone will be the 3-4 alignment of the last several seasons, and in its place will be a four-man front designed to take advantage of East’s talent on that side of the ball. “It is better for us,” head coach Joey McCullough said. “I think people saw that in our Allen game … What we did is put athletes on the field.”

Among the changes will be moving junior Grayson Diepenbrock from linebacker to the strong side defensive end, while senior Michael McNair will be the other end. At defensive tackle McCullough expects seniors Bryson Royal and Dieon Davis to man those positions when PESH opens the season Aug. 28 at Lake Highlands. Spelling the starters during games will be juniors Ralph French and Will Garrett, each of who was a linebacker in 2014, as well as senior Marc Ishmail, who’ll play defensive end. Anthony Hines III, a junior, moves to middle linebacker from the outside. During the spring game, Hines demonstrated an ability to run from sideline to sideline and used his speed to penetrate the backfield. “We’re going to cover him up and let him run,” McCullough said. An outside linebacker, senior Christian Buchanan, the team’s H-back on offense last season, should see playing time, as will junior Michael Aleman, senior Reuben Donald and senior Trevor Owens. Donald, the coach said, also can play safety. In the defensive backfield, senior Quan Beasley, a cornerback a year ago, will be a safety and one of the Panthers’ back-up quarterbacks. Returning at cornerback will be senior Jordan Williams, with senior De’onte Powell, a running back in 2014, likely to line up on the other side. “We just needed an athlete and he does a great job,” McCullough said. Also vying for time will be Jansen Williams, who moved in from Allen, and Zadok Wilson, the coach said.
