Sophomore Caleb Connor worked his way through the 157-pound weight class bracket en route to the championship. He picked up a pin and three decisions, including an overtime 3-2 win in the final over Fabian Padilla of Iowa Western Community College. Head coach Jake Stevenson’s crew also added a pair of runners-up in junior 125-pounder Evan Shell and sophomore 165-pounder Ethan Hatcher. They both produced 3-1 records on the day. Rounding out the first five efforts was freshman 133-pounder Logan Stumpf. He placed fifth after winning five of seven matches. The Mustangs enter the evening with a 5-2 dual record. They went 2-1 at the second section of the 2022 GPAC Duals Jan. 29. Junior 133-pounder Taylor Vasquez (No. 14), junior 149-pounder John Diener (No. 10), and sophomore 197-pounder Hunter DeJong (No. 14) represented Morningside on the latest rankings. Ottawa, coached by Colby Crank, harbor an impressive 15-2 dual mark. The Braves have won five in a row. The battle with Mside is the program’s second venture into the GPAC, as they rolled past Midland 47-3 in their season opener in October. Ranked No. 14 on the recent national poll, 165-pounder Dayton Hill (No. 9), 174-pounder Kendall Biddle (No. 17), 184-pounder J.D. Perez (No. 9), and heavyweight Justin Darter (No. 18) lead the way.
