MUSTANG BASKETBALL 33 of the first 41 points and didn’t look back, building as large as a 64-point lead en route to a 107-52 victory which was the program’s most points scored in a game since 2017. Sixteen Maroon-clad players saw time over the course of the contest. Senior guard Sierra Mitchell, in just 19 minutes, had an evening to remember. She drained six treys to move into second on the school’s made three-pointers list, was 10 of 15 from the field and dished out four assists during a 28-point performance. Junior forward Sophia Peppers backed that up with a near perfect shooting line, going eight of eight from the field, three of three from beyond the arc and missing just one free throw to finish with 21 points. Sophomore forward Sadie Roth came off the bench with 10 points, four rebounds, a blocked shot and a steal. Fellow underclasswoman post player Chloe Lofstrom was just two points and a rebound away from collecting a double-double. She tallied eight points and nine boards. Morningside was red hot in all shooting categories. They hit 60.9 percent from the field (39 of 64), 62.5 percent from outside the arc (15 of 24) and 77.8 percent from the free throw line (14 of 18) while out-rebounding the Lancers 45-20. Head coach Jim Sykes’ men’s team stepped on its home floor for the first time, too, in the 2020-21 regular season Nov. 21, with a late second half surge leading to a positive outcome. The hard-fought 68-58 decision marked the squad’s fifth win in six outings. Senior center Trey Brown led the way for the Mustangs with his seventh career double-double. He had 16
The second of three successive home Great Plains Athletic Conference doubleheaders is on the docket this evening inside Allee Gymnasium and the Rosen-Verdoorn Sports Center. Morningside, fresh off a rousing weekend sweep of Mount Marty University, hosts the Red Raiders of Northwestern College in a Siouxland showdown. Mside’s men, winners of three straight, sport a 5-1 overall and 1-1 conference mark; the Mustangs women’s team, also riding a three-game victory string, is 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the conference; Northwestern’s men sport a 4-1 overall and 2-0 GPAC record; and the NWC women are 0-6 overall and 0-3 in the league.
THE MATCH- UP The men’s head-to-head all-time record is close-knit. Mside holds a 16-12 advantage due to five straight decisions. It’s similar on the women’s side of the ledger. The Maroon have a 22-17 cushion but the last six contests have been split. Going to your bench in a conference home opener is a rare luxury. It was one, though, that was afforded head coach Jamie Sale and the Mustangs Nov. 21. Sale’s squad scored

points and 12 rebounds, leading the team in both categories. Mside finished the game holding large advantages in overall (plus 24) and offensive (plus 15) rebounds. One of the hidden stars of the night was freshman forward Ely Doble. Doble finished the night with seven points, four rebounds, three steals, and one block. The women’s zest for shooting three-point baskets has caught the eye of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics numbers. Morningside is fifth in three-point field goal percentage, hitting at a torrid 44.4 percent pace which has led them to making on average 11.2 long ball attempts per game. Those categories rank them fifth and eighth. Individually, the senior guard combo of Tayte Hansen and Faith Meyer are tied for sixth nationally, converting at a high-flying 66.7 percent. Mside’s men have two top 10 residences. Senior guard Zach Imig is fourth in steals (17) and the team is seventh in fewest rebounds surrendered per contest (27.833).
ABOUT NORTHWESTERN Balance has been the buzzword for head coach Kris Korver’s Red Raiders men’s team. They have five players averaging double figures in scoring and three of that group has plucked five-or-more rebounds per game off the glass. Freshman forward Alex Van Kalsbeek has gotten his collegiate career going quickly, averaging 20 points and six and six-tenths rebounds per contest to go along with seven blocked shots. Senior forward Craig Sterk makes for a challenging inside duo, complementing his first-year teammate with 14 points and five and eight-tenths rebounds per outing to go with four blocked shots. Head coach Chris Yaw’s women’s team is guided by sophomore guard Emilee Danner. She’s posting 13 points per game and has been strong from outside the arc, converting on 13 of 25 tries for a white-hot 52.5 percent clip. Freshman post player Megan Schany is close behind at 10.8 points per appearance and is just two tenths from average a double-double in scoring and rebounding.
