MORNINGSIDE COLLEGE GA M E DAY - JA N UA RY 13 , 20 21
MUSTANG BASKETBALL The second edition of the 2020-21 version of the River City Rivalry series makes its way to Allee Gymnasium and the Rosen-Verdoorn Sports Center this evening. Morningside College’s men and women both enter with winning strings still in process. The women, coached by Jamie Sale, have compiled seven successive triumphs and lead the Great Plains Athletic Conference at 11-1 as part of going 13-2 overall. Mside’s men, coached by Jim Sykes, have won their last three straight towards forging a similar 13-2 overall mark, including going 9-2 in the league. Briar Cliff University has the same trends going. The women’s team, coached by Brita Hand, has won three in a row and four of its last five towards crafting a 12-4 overall and 10-3 GPAC record. The Chargers’ men’s squad, coached by Mark Svagera, has a five-game win streak in tow as part of a 10-7 overall and 7-5 league record.
THE MATCH- UP An early December split at BCU’s Newman Flanagan Center opened the 2020-21 set. The women’s series has seen the two sides split the last four, including Briar Cliff winning 80-78 in the first meeting. A 76-58 Maroon road victory continued a recent span of five positive outcomes in the last six outings for Morningside. Senior center Trey Brown continues to pen a rather remarkable story for his senior campaign. He’s registered double-figure points in every game, hit 50 percent or better from the field in all but two contests, and recorded a double-double in nine of his last 12 appearances, which includes four consecutive outings. With those numbers in mind, he finds himself ranked among the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’ top 20 in four categories (rebounds – No. 4 – 160/rebounds per game – No. 12 – 10.667/offensive rebounds per game – No. 16 – 3.667/blocked shots – 18 – No. 18). Fellow Gretna native and Class of 2021 member Zach Imig and freshman guard Aidan Vanderloo are also part of the nation’s first 20 statistically. Imig is 20th in steals (27), and Vanderloo sits 19th in three-point field goal accuracy (56.1 percent). This evening, Imig’s first basket moves him to No. 13, past Ryan Tegtmeier (20-13-17/1,349) on the all-time scoring list. He can also climb over Steve Brandsma (1980-84) with 15-or-more, as Brandsma stands 12th at 1362. Looking at Morningside’s women’s program’s national trends, the veteran combination of senior guard Sierra Mitchell and junior forward Sophia Peppers hold down first ten national marks in four sections. Mitchell continues to lead the way in made three-point baskets (57), ranks fourth in three-pointers per contest (3.8), and is fifth in total points (258). Peppers stands ninth in scoring (246 points).

Mitchell passed former standout Autumn Bartel (2005-09) on the career scoring chart with her 14-point effort in last weekend’s win over Hastings College that opened the second half of conference action. She continues to track towards the 1,800-point milestone for her career, needing 64 to hit it. The senior guard also is hot on the trail of all-time three-point leader Madison Braun (2014-18), trailing her by only 20 (380360). Junior forward Taylor Rodenburgh met a career milestone against Hastings. Behind a single-game personal best 25 points, she reached and passed 500. In recent action, the Mustangs took the measure of Hastings on Jan. 9, winning 86-50 in the women’s contest and 88-69 on the men’s side. Rodenburgh headlined the individual efforts for the women. She blistered the nets at a meteoric 66.7 percent rate, which included hitting on three-of-six three-point attempts, but her scoring was just part of the story. Rodenburgh was also a tough customer on the boards, compiling 13, even a single-game personal best, for a doubledouble and dished out two assists, and picked up a steal. She was one of four players to finish in double-digits scoringwise, joining Mitchell, Peppers (12 points), and freshman post player Chloe Lofstrom (10 points). On the men’s side, out-boarding the visiting Broncos 59-32, with the total tying for second-most in a game in program history, set the tone. A healthy dose of Vanderloo led them. He tied a single-game personal high with 19 points in his second straight start due to hitting five three-pointers. The tandem of Brown and Imig each produced double-doubles, as Brown wound up with 12 points, 12 boards, and three blocked shots, and Imig tallied 12 points, ten rebounds, three assists, and five assists. Sophomore guards Will Pottebaum and Collin Hill, the other two starters, also produced impressive afternoons. Pottebaum totaled 10 points and three assists, and Hill was just two points shy of a double-double of his own (eight points, ten rebounds). Morningside’s bench, which contributed 27 points, was led by freshman guard Joey Skoff, who posted seven points, four rebounds, and two blocked shots. Following tonight’s doubleheader, the Mustangs take to the road Saturday, Jan. 16, for a doubleheader at Concordia University.
BCU BULLET POINTS The guard duo of sophomore Konnor Sudmann and junior Madelyn Deitchler guide the Chargers’ women’s team pointswise. Sudmann averages 15.1 per contest, with Deitchler at 13.3. They’re also strong on the boards, averaging 6.3 per game each, and have contributed to a tough defensive front, which has 214 steals in 16 games. Kennedy Benne and Payton Slaughter, also underclasswoman guards, are close behind Sudmann and Deitchler in points at 12.4 and 11.6 per outing. BC’s men rank as one of the conference and nation’s most prolific three-point shooting teams. They’ve hit 200 to date, which leads the NAIA. Sophomore guard Nick Hoyt’s 53 are second-highest individually, and Conner Groves, also a sophomore guard, is among the first 20, too, with 37 made treys to sit No. 18. Junior guard Jaden Kleinhesselink tops
the scoring column (15.1 ppg) with Hoyt second (12.5 ppg) and junior forward Quinten Vasa third (11.4 ppg). Vasa is also the team leader on the boards (6.2 rpg) and is first with 14 blocked shots.
