Mustang FRIDAY, OCT. 21 THE MATCH-UP The Mustangs are led on offense by sophomore Sydney Marlow, who has 382 kills on the season and averages more than four kills per set. She’s followed by freshman Payten Lode and fellow sophomore Claire Wilson. Lode has 204 kills on the season, averaging 2.4 per set, while Wilson has 196 kills and averages 2.42 per set. Aureana Bernales leads the Mustangs in the back row, with 374 digs. Marlow follows the sophomore libero with 292. The defensive front row is led by freshman Kylah Brewer, with 65 blocks, and sophomore Nienke van Drunen, with 56. Kalli Hegerle is the offensive leader of the Jimmies, with 257 kills and 2.99 kills per set. Anna Holen also averages 2.99 kills per set, and has 242 on the season. Ellie Holen is on the verge of 500 digs this season, with 499 already on her tally as she averages 6.16 digs per set. Anna Holen is a distance behind, with 289 digs. Lexi Olson leads the Jamestown defensive front, with 98 blocks on the season. She’s followed by fellow middle hitter Darienne Johnson, with 67.

LOLO EDLUND HONORARY COACH Lolo Edlund is six years old and a kindergartener at Sergeant Bluff-Luton Primary School. She is a cancer warrior who loves accessories, make-up, singing, and dance. Lolo’s siblings are Evelyn and Wyatt, and her parents are Jeff and Erin Edlund, who is Morningside’s own vice president for university engagement. Lolo was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia on May 12, 2021, and has endured more than 520 days of intense treatment at Children’s Hospital & Clinics of Omaha. She is currently in the maintenance phase of her treatment and is slated to take her last round of chemo on Aug. 6, 2023. One of many things that the Edlunds have learned is the importance of blood as part of the treatment process, with Lolo receiving nine blood transfusions so far. They want to thank the nine individuals who helped save Lolo’s life, and they encourage anyone who is able to give blood. The Edlunds also want to thank all those who have continued to support them and pray for Lolo.

THE LITTLE AL FOUNDATION littlealfoundation.com The Little Al Foundation is a local nonprofit that provides families who have children facing serious or lifethreatening medical conditions with gas cards, hotel stays, and food. This was especially important to the Edlunds as they have made more than 70 trips to Omaha for treatment and Lolo had to stay in Omaha the first 30 days of her treatment.

Pediatric cancer research receives just 4% of all federal cancer research funding, yet most of the treatments were developed in the 1970s and are often toxic for the children who receive them.
