William Penn has rattled off three wins to start the 2023 season, including back-toback shutouts in their first two games.
Saturday, the Statesmen defeated Friends (Kan.) 3-1.
William Penn defeated Morningside 3-1 in Oskaloosa last season. The Mustangs were tied with the Statesmen early in the second half, but two late goals were the difference.

Head Coach: Tom Maxon (24th season)
Maxon has a 194-184-18 record in 20 seasons since starting the men’s soccer program in 2001. It took just two years to produce a winning team when Morningside posted a 14-6 record in the 2002 campaign. He guided the Mustangs to five consecutive NAIA Region III playoff appearances (2003-07) and was named 2004 GPAC Coach of the Year after a 15-8 record, a share of the GPAC regular-season championship, and coming within one game of the national tournament.
In 2018, after four straight winning seasons, he Maxon the program to a 13-7-1 record and their firstever appearance in the national tournament. The following season, Maxon guided the Maroon to their second GPAC title and a victory in national tournament action as part of an 18-4 finish in which he was tabbed conference Coach of the Year. His 2020 squad turned in another conference title, was a league postseason tournament runner-up, and gained a national tournament berth, as he registered his third GPAC COTY accolade.

Brown currently owns a 36-24-3 record and has he has guided one AllAmerican, nine players to all-Heart recognition, while also having nine Heart Scholar-Athletes and 10 NAIA Scholar-Athletes.
In his first campaign, Brown guided the Statesmen to a 12-9 record (8-4 Heart of America Athletic Conference) and a return trip to the NAIA National Championship Opening Round. WPU returned to the Opening Round in 2021, where it collected its first-ever postseason win in program history. The navy and gold reached the NAIA Opening Round in 2022 as well, extending its postseason streak to four seasons.
Brown was promoted from associate head men’s and women’s soccer coach, a position he had served in for three seasons.
