A top 10 national showdown spotlights the 2020 home and Great Plains Athletic Conference opener for Morningside College. The two-time defending national and nine-time defending conference champion Mustangs host the Raiders of Northwestern College this evening. Head coach Steve Ryan’s squad led College Football America’s and Street and Smith’s National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’ preseason polls with Northwestern, coached by Matt McCarty, being in the top 10 of each.
SHORT SEPTEMBER Tonight’s contest is one of only two for the Maroon in the season’s first month. They travel to Midland University of Nebraska Saturday, Sept. 19, and then have a bye week before beginning a string of three of four home appearances over four weeks in October.
SERIES HISTORY Morningside holds a 13-6 all-time edge due to a current sixgame win streak. Close-knit decisions have been the norm of late with three finals being decided by 10-points-or-less.
MUSTANG MARKS A glimpse into Ryan’s thoughts about what keeps him laserfocused tells a lot about the mindset of this year’s team. “Simply put, I love what I do,” the Mustangs’ head coach, going into his 20th year at the helm, reflected. «It all comes down to leading young men to success on and off the field --- bringing them together to work towards common goals.» An offense that was among the nation’s top 10 in 13 different categories has some big weapons returning. Senior running back Arnijae “AP” Ponder, a first-team All-Great Plains Athletic Conference and Associated Press Little All-America honoree along with gaining honorable mention NAIA All-American honors last season, was tabbed a preseason All-American by Street and Smith and named to the College Football America Yearbook Starting Lineup after setting a new career rushing standard as part of a nearly 2000-yard campaign that included 23 touchdowns in 2019. Junior quarterback Joe Dolincheck was also pegged a preseason All-American and member of the starting lineup by the respective preview publications after a sophomore slate in which he threw for 4,303 yards and 49 touchdowns en route to second-team All-Great Plains Athletic Conference and AP Little America honors. Senior wide receiver Reid Jurgensmeier had a memorable 2019, too, with 69 catches for 1,377 yards and 17 touchdowns, while senior running back Anthony Sims has Morningside set up with a bruising backfield combo after registering 675 yards and 11
MUSTANG FOOTBALL touchdowns in his junior season. The defensive unit also has some healthy cornerstones in place, despite some losses due to graduation. The defensive line senior bookends of Seth Maitlen and Niklas Gustav anchor what could be a problematic front group for opposing offenses to handle. Maitlen, after pestering opponents to the tune of 16 tackle for losses and nine and a half sacks, was tabbed a preseason All-American by Street and Smith. Gustav wasn’t far off that pace registering 10.5 tackles for losses and five-and-a-half sacks a year ago. “It means a lot (to have guys like that returning),” Ryan said. “It’s not just about them being good players but the fact that they’re great people and students. Their leadership, along with all of the veterans, will be as significant as any other season going in.” … Morningside was picked atop the league preseason coaches’ poll, released Aug. 26. The Mustangs, nine-time reigning and 10-time overall loop champions received 81 poll points and nine of the ten first-place votes. Northwestern College was second with Dordt University and Midland University tying for third (60 points apiece).
NORTHWESTERN NOTES The Raiders generated 73 points and one first place vote, trailing only Morningside on the league coaches ranking. Northwestern finished second in the 2019 GPAC season with an 8-1 record and qualified for its third consecutive NAIA Football Championship Series. Seeded eighth, they lost to No.9 St. Xavier (Ill.) 25-20 in the first round to end the season with a 9-2 mark. The 2020 season will be the fifth of Matt McCarty’s impressive tenure as head coach. McCarty has guided Raider teams to three straight FCS appearances and a top 15 ranking in each of the last three seasons. Northwestern returns seven starters on offense, led by senior quarterback Tyson Kooima, the reigning GPAC Offensive Player of the Year, and his top target, senior wideout Shane Solberg, who holds nearly every receiving record at Northwestern. Defensively, McCarty brings back six starters, including Brett Moser (linebacker), Carter Van Gorp and T.J. Jones (defensive line).

CHAMPIONING CHARACTER MAITLEN BUILDS ON ROOTS TOWARDS SUCCESS Grounded. Not like an airplane that can’t fly due to weather or an insolent child being punished. In the case of Morningside College senior defensive lineman Seth Maitlen, it’s an ideal of being centered… understanding the big picture in situations… doing the right thing when necessary… well balanced and sensible. In a sense, being a Champion of Character. So, when the Creston, Iowa native, was recognized with that moniker at the annual National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’ championship week banquet Dec. 18, 2019, he was a shining example of the tenets it stood for. While on the field, there lurks a defensive lineman who ranked in the top 15 of the NAIA in sacks as a junior and helps guide a bedrock unit. Off the field, Seth is a real example of the character and leadership the association looks for in its honor. That was shown in a recent meeting with head coach Steve Ryan. He came to his office during the season with an idea of working with Operation Christmas Child through the Samaritan’s Purse International Relief. Having seen Maitlen, one of his upperclassman defensive leaders step forward to assist in Hurricane Harvey relief efforts twice and also go on a pair of Tanzania mission trips, Ryan was wholeheartedly behind the idea. “It comes down to being able to help others who are less fortunate, no matter where they are,” Maitlen noted. “My mom and dad, Steve and Sue, were always telling my brothers and sisters and me how important it is to give back to the community and beyond. “I’ve been fortunate to be raised in a home where our faith is fundamental,” he added. “It hasn’t been tough for me to want to do things like this. It’s awesome knowing 100 children in Africa will have Morningside football t-shirts to wear and some hygiene items that are much needed.” His decision to attend Morningside College was paved through that faith. “It seemed like the best fit,” Maitlen reflected. “I wanted to continue playing football, have an excellent academic experience, and also be able to make a difference in the community beyond campus. We did a lot of praying over (the final decision), and we felt God moving me to be here. “Coach Ryan is such an important part (of this being a great choice),” he added. “He’s able to work in Biblical lessons about what it truly means to be a man, and he is always talking about developing us into leaders and men of purpose for now and in the future.” A senior mountain climbing event last fall helped cement Maitlen’s feelings about Morningside even more. “When you’re driving that long of a distance with a lot of guys, discussions will come up,” he remembered. “A lot of them were beyond football… pretty deep, which is what Coach uses that trip for. To get that group together, focused on life goals. When you climb a mountain, you face adversities as you do in a football game and life,” he added. “We were able to learn a lot about ourselves, and it brought us even more together.” Maitlen’s work in the fields of counseling psychology and social and behavioral sciences is leading him towards a potential career in law enforcement. “I did an internship with juvenile court services a couple of years ago, and I enjoyed the work (that was being done),” he said. “I know I want to work to help people in some role… no matter what it might be. Who knows, someday I might even look into coaching.” Keeping his feet firmly on the ground and pointed towards a future of leadership and character.
