Mustang A pair of Great Plains Athletic Conference titans duke it out for a second successive season for a spot in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’ Football Championship Series finale. Second-seeded Morningside University, sporting a 12-0 record, toppled Northwestern College (12-1) 55-49 in a memorable Week Nine conference clash at De Valois Stadium in Orange City. The fourth-seeded Red Raiders find themselves in similar territory to 2020 when they dropped the regular-season game to the Mustangs. However, they did exact a measure of revenge, scoring a touchdown in the final moments to upend the then two-time defending national champs 44-41 in the national last four.
THE SERIES Morningside has a 19-12 edge on NWC. That lead is due, in large part, to winning 14 of the last 16 meetings.
THE MATCH-UP Something will have to give on the FieldTurf inside Elwood Olsen Stadium this afternoon. Morningside and Northwestern are the number one and three teams scoring-wise (59.3 ppg/46.8 ppg). At the same time, the two defenses can take over games, too, with the visitors surrendering only 15.3 points per outing and the hosts allowing only 17.3 per appearance. Digging deeper into the national numbers, Mside is ranked atop the NAIA in 17 different categories. NWC is among the best three in 11 categories. Individually, the offensive storyline remains the same. Senior quarterback Joe Dolincheck is the country’s leader in completions (271), completion percentage (68.4), yards (4085), yards per game (340.4), touchdowns (40), and pass efficiency (184.9). His counterpart, senior Tyson Kooima, despite appearing in only seven games, has a spot in the top 35 in passing scores (19 – No. 31). Dolincheck’s favorite target, senior wide receiver Reid Jurgensmeier, leads the nation in receptions (85). On the other side of the field, Red Raiders’ junior Cade Moser is among the top 10 in receptions (75 – No. 9), yards (1,375 – No. 2), and touchdowns (20 – No. 2). Freshman Ryan Cole has made the most of his postseason opportunities on the ground, with four of his 12 scores occurring while averaging more than four yards a carry. Northwestern rushing attack has been two-pronged, with freshmen Konnor MacQuillan and Logan Meyer each finding the end zone 10 times. Both defenses have had their fair share of heroics, too. Morningside is led by senior linebacker Tyler Wingert who’s totaled five-or-more tackles, including a combined seven tackles for losses, an interception, and a forced fumble over the last six games. Freshman defensive back Jaden Snyder’s seven interceptions and sophomore defensive lineman Jessen Reinking’s six and a half sacks and ten and a half tackles for losses guide NWC, who has accumulated 30 takeaways. Morningside scored touchdowns on its first five drives on Nov.27 and didn’t look back en route to a quarterfinal round victory. Riding the arm of Dolincheck throughout 60 minutes, the Mustangs opened up a 38-7 halftime advantage towards a 58-21 win over 10th-seeded Kansas Wesleyan University. Dolincheck, surpassing the 12,000-yard and 125-touchdown career milestones to spotlight Offensive Player of the Game honors, went for 417 yards and five scores, topping an offense that collected more than 550 yards to highlight a fifth straight advancement

to the national last four. Senior wide receiver Austin Johnson returned to the field in a big way with two touchdowns as part of a seven-catch, 153-yard afternoon. Jurgensmeier, becoming only the second receiver in program history to reach 70 touchdowns with one end zone visit, also hauled in seven catches, with his yardage total sitting at 77. Sophomore Zach Norton and senior Caleb Schweigart also collected four-or-more receptions with four each. For the second straight season – and the second time in the 2021 calendar year – Northwestern advanced to the semifinals. Head coach Matt McCarty’s squad did so behind 164 receiving yards from Cade Moser en route to a 25-20 victory over No. 7-ranked Marian last weekend. In a game heavily affected by the wind with gusts anywhere from 25- to 30-mph, the Raiders were able to prevail thanks, once again, to timely interceptions to stymie Marian momentum swings and walk out with the victory. Kooima threw for 227 yards on 16-for-28 passing with one touchdown toss.
