Mustang
FOOTBALL SATURDAY, OCT. 30
Morningside University’s football, cheerleading, dance, and marching band programs pay tribute to their Class of 2022 members this afternoon, as the University of Jamestown visits for the regular-season finale. A special ceremony will take place before kickoff for the Senior Day 2021 festivities. This afternoon’s match-up between the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics No. 3-ranked Mustangs and the Jimmies is also spotlighted by Breast Cancer Awareness month recognition. All Mside football, cheerleading, and dance student-athletes will have a pink-colored item with them, and the cheerleading and dance squads will throw out special T-shirts during the contest.
THE SERIES The Elwood Olsen Stadium FieldTurf hosts the fifth all-time edition. Morningside has captured all four previous meetings, including a 54-7 final at Jamestown last fall.
THE MATCH-UP Head coach Steve Ryan’s squad continues to be the offensive statistical standard-setter across the NAIA. They are atop ten different categories, including scoring (59.1 points per game); total offense (648.1 yards per game); passing yards per contest (394.4); first downs (229); first downs per outing (32.7); punt return yardage (464); and third-down conversion rate (56 percent). Several individuals are also housed in the same high-rent district. Senior quarterback Joe Dolincheck leads the way in completion percentage (69) and pass efficiency (187.7); senior running back Anthony Sims’ 8.3 yards per attempt is first, and junior placekicker Chase Carter tops the nation in made and attempted extra points (55/56) and kicker scoring (70 points). Mside’s defense isn’t too far off the same measures as the offense. Their 30 sacks are second-most nationally, while their defensive score and nine interceptions are also within the first 30. Senior defensive back Drew Bessey’s three picks and senior linebacker Tyler Wingert’s five sacks, 67 tackles, 9.6 tackles per outing, and 41 sack yards are all situated among the top 30, too. Morningside spent an eighth straight session among the top three of the NAIA’s First Down Playbook Top 25 with the Week Seven poll release Oct. 25. The Mustangs, sporting a 7-0 overall and Great Plains Athletic Conference record, received 411 ranking points and one first-place mention. Those totals put them third, trailing defending national champion Lindsey Wilson College of Kentucky and defending national runner-up Northwestern College. In the wake of a thrilling come-from-behind victory over Dordt in an NAIA top 15 showdown Oct. 23, Mside was lauded by the GPAC on its Player of the Week honors for Oct. 18-24. Senior wide receiver Caleb Schweigart was named Offensive Player of the Week. Junior placekicker Chase Carter was tabbed Special Teams Player of the Week. Morningside got up off the mat in the most difficult of situations Oct. 23. With No. 13-ranked Dordt University sitting on the doorstep of a massive victory, the Mustangs repelled a 28-19 deficit midway through the fourth quarter and scored two touchdowns in the final 7:06 to claim a heart-stopping 34-28 triumph in front of a crowd that sat on the edge of its seat for the full 60 minutes. The comeback started with adversity shadowing

Beautiful Beginning
2011 MUSTANGS LAY A FOUNDATION
Eleven years ago, a gritty bunch of Morningside College football studentathletes couldn’t have envisioned what winning the Great Plains Athletic Conference championship could do. Overcoming an early-season league loss to former member Nebraska Wesleyan University, the team rattled off seven successive victories, including a pair of two-points-or-less decisions against Midland University and Dakota Wesleyan University. That roll led them to overtake Northwestern College and Doane University down the stretch for the GPAC title, highlighting head coach Steve Ryan’s 10th year at the helm. A decade later, and that beat continues. Similar to memories created for each team in the Decade of Dominance which resume this weekend during a reunion of the 2011 champions. “To me, the game that most stands out was the one at Midland,” Tyler Winter, Mside’s center, said. “The University of Sioux Falls had left, so we figured we had as good a chance as anyone to win the championship. We were up against it after the loss to Nebraska Wesleyan, but expectations were still high.”
our mark. The trip to Northwestern and to win there was big, too. From that point, the season just kind of got going a lot faster. “We were a ‘grind it out team,’” he added. “The defense always did well, and the offense managed to control the ball.” Among the defensive standouts on the 2011 roster, Marshall Barney noted that the fortitude produced by that bunch is something he’ll never forget. “We had some of our best players hurt during some key games, but we managed to bind together and find a way to win,” he said. “We may not have had the best talent on the field at times, but we were very tough. If we were able to stay close, we could win, and we did.”
“Midland had the lead with one play to go,” he reflected. “Kyle Nikkel, our quarterback, dropped back and heaved a hail mary pass to the end zone that Kyle Schuck, one of our wide receivers, came down with in the end zone. Everyone was going nuts, but we still had to hit the extra point, which we did. From there, we got a roll going. We had a lot of guys step up that year and just handle their roles. We were and still are a very closeknit group.”
Barney and his teammates credited the ability of Morningside to keep its long-tenured coaching staff as a reason for where the program is now.
Nate McDonald, who admittedly handled a “three-headed” position monster during his Morningside days playing defensive end, tight end, and offensive guard, also remembers the early section of that year.
“The consistency Marshall talked about, to me, is why the school continues to produce winning teams,” McDonald said. “The staff doesn’t just talk about Xs and Os. They want the student-athletes to succeed off the field --- in life.”
“For some reason, the Valley City State game, which was the first one, sticks out because there was a lot of hard-hitting and talking going on,” he noted with a laugh. “We had a lot of new guys and were trying to make
“Coaches Ryan, Jacobsen, and Turner, as examples, have been with the school so long,” he said. “That’s very impressive nowadays. They’ve taken Mustangs football and climbed the ladder of the NAIA. That’s all due to the great relationship they’ve had.”
That tradition continues today and looks to add on to a decade for the record books.
continued from page one the home side of the field. After a fumble through the back of the end zone took a potential Mside score off the board, Dordt barreled down the field 75 yards for a touchdown to take the nine-point lead. However, the potent Morningside offense got into gear just in the nick of time. A 10-play, 75-yard march concluded with a neatly crafted 15yard scoring strike from Dolincheck to sophomore wide receiver Zach Norton. The 10-time defending league champs had to overcome more white knuckles, as, after the defense stopped the Defenders and got the ball back to the offense, DU’s defense, a complicated equation for the Mustangs to solve throughout the afternoon, stopped their host in their end. Seemingly in control, Dordt picked up one first down and watched Mside whittle away its three timeouts. Enter senior defensive end Zack Keller. With the defense needing to stop a fourth and two attempt, he muscled past a Defender offensive lineman and caught opposing quarterback Tyler Reynolds for a considerable loss. Morningside’s offense reciprocated behind Dolincheck’s arm and the hands of Schweigart. He made a one-handed diving catch inside the 10-yard line and then collected the eventual game-winning score with 42 seconds left. Dordt made each of those ticks off the clock seem like a lifetime, moving the ball to Mside’s 28-yard line. Junior defensive back Lonell Boyd, Jr. finally allowed a large breath of relief exhalation to leave the stadium battling for an interception in the end zone as the clock ran out. As usual, the heroes were many for Ryan’s crew. Carter played a crucial role in enabling the Mustangs
to move to 7-0 overall and in the conference. He became just the third kicker in school history to hit four field goals in a game, nailed both of his extra-point attempts, and launched four kickoffs out of seven for touchbacks. Sims, Dolincheck, Norton, and Schweigart paced the offense. Sims had a skillful 37 carries for 279 yards; Dolincheck fired for three touchdowns and over 300 yards, and Norton and Schweigart each hauled in 100-or-more yards receiving. The defense put together an impressive resume with two sacks, ten tackles for losses, two forced fumbles and recoveries, and an interception. Wingert, Boyd, Jr., and senior linebacker Jalen Portis compiled 10-or-more tackles. Jamestown brings a 2-6 overall and 2-5 conference record to Sioux City. Head coach Brian Mistro’s squad is guided by one of the nation’s top 10 passing attacks. The Jimmies are ninth in overall (2292) and yards per game (286.5) while going 181 for 359 with seven interceptions sits third. Junior signal-caller Cade Torgerson has been the architect with 18 passing scores and 2,250 yards. The freshman-junior wide receiver duo of Micah Madyun and Javon Bowie-Monteiro has combined for ten touchdowns and 76 receptions. Junior Jordan Olson has been one of the league’s best defensively, compiling four interceptions, a fumble recovery, and 42 tackles from his defensive back slot. Morningside wraps up the regular season with visits to Northwestern and Dakota Wesleyan Nov. 6 and 13.
