FOOTBALL SATURDAY, SEPT. 4 Morningside University brings the curtain up on its 2021 season. Concordia University visits Elwood Olsen Stadium for a kickoff “under the lights” that begins both teams’ Great Plains Athletic Conference campaign. Head coach Steve Ryan’s Mustangs, the 10-time defending league champions, were picked preseason favorites on the league coaches poll, released last month. Mside received 98 poll points, featuring eight first-place votes, to stand atop the list. Northwestern College (93 points – three first-place votes) and Dordt University (82 poll points) rounded out a tightly-packed first three. Head coach Patrick Dabernow’s Bulldog squad was tabbed for a fifth-place finish.
THE SERIES
Morningside has captured each of the 16 meetings in the series. It was a wild and woolly offensive clash a year ago in Seward, as CU kept things close throughout the first half, trailing only 14-10 after one quarter. However, the Mustangs reeled off four unanswered touchdown drives over the late stages of the second stanza and early into the third to put away a 56-22 victory. The two sides combined for 48 first downs and 937 yards of offense.
THE MATCH-UP
The Mustangs return plenty of offensive firepower in 2021. Two of their top three running backs in senior Anthony Sims and fellow senior Matt Strecker; junior Joe Dolincheck at quarterback; and their top two receivers in seniors Reid Jurgensmeier and Austin Johnson from the 2020 squad that narrowly missed the program’s third straight appearance in the national championship game look to guide the controls. Sims is fifth on the all-time career rushing list (2,349 yards) and tied for fourth with 34 touchdowns among running backs. Dolincheck continues to close in on becoming the fourth signal-caller with 10,000-or-more yards passing as he enters the year just over 2,600 away from the milestone. He’s among the program’s first five in passing attempts, completions, yardage, and touchdowns. Jurgensmeier is also located in the high rent district in regards to receiving. He’s second all-time in yardage (3,854) and touchdown receptions (54) and needs only four more receptions to take the No. 2 slot on that career list. Four players on the defensive side that totaled 30-or-more tackles are back, including first-team all-league defensive back Josh Miller, a junior, who registered 72. Senior linebacker Weston Schultz expects big things after producing 70 tackles, nine and a half tackles for losses, and two and a half sacks last season.

Relationship Building SCHULTZ USES FOOTBALL, CAMPUS EXPERIENCE TO PREPARE FOR FUTURE On the outside, any correlation between the gridiron and being a buyer in the agricultural market might be met with skepticism. However, as you begin to see the path senior linebacker Weston Schultz is taking to work in the family business, it becomes more apparent. A pair of good examples include days traveling with cattle-buying professionals mirror bus trips to road games by getting to know teammates better and forming bonds much like he has done with his dad and others on business trips while advancing through knowledge of the cattle market and the agriculture industry itself can be typified by the constant work in the classroom and on the practice field to hone his skills in both areas. Weston’s zest for solid relationships on and off the field comes naturally. His father, Royce, had similar experiences in athletics and agriculture as has his brother Landon. “Dad was a great resource when I was trying to decide on where to transfer to,” Schultz reflected. “I did enjoy the University of Northern Iowa, but I wasn’t playing as much as I wanted, mainly being on special teams. There were several others in front of me for linebacker starting slots. “We talked about a couple of options, but then Dad said, ‘why not Morningside?’” he added. “He had a great time there as a baseball studentathlete, and I had heard their ag program was tremendous. It just took one visit for me to be sold.” While he did step on the field as a linebacker last season, Schultz is poised for a chance along the defensive line this year. Although it’s a change, he does have a “cheat sheet” in the family as his brother played the same position. “It’s a little different, as I’ve played linebacker all my life,” he said. “I’ve never had my hand in the dirt. It’s been a lot of work on hand placement, feet driving, and being faster off the snap. Along the defensive line, you have to get on your blocks right away compared to seeing everything as a linebacker.” “Having watched and learned from my brother somewhat when I was younger, we were able to get into the field this summer and work out together,” he added. “He told me it comes down to staying in my gap to support run defense and then get to the quarterback as fast as you can if a pass play is in progress. Regardless of the position, I love defense and tackling – it’s a lot of fun.” Similar to feelings he has about farming and pretty much anything outdoors. “Being in a farm family has you playing and working outside in a lot of instances,” Schultz said. “From hunting trips to the old family farm in Schleswig to playing golf, I enjoy all of the possibilities the outdoor life offers.”

Picked as preseason Great Plains Athletic Conference champion and ranked No. 3 on the initial American Football Coaches Association/ National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics poll and No. 2 on the College Football Road Trip NAIA ranking, Mside was picked No. 2 on the NAIAFball Twitter media poll. The Mustangs received two first-place votes and trailed only defending national champion Lindsey Wilson College of Kentucky on the listing. Jurgensmeier and junior Cooper VonSeggern have been nominated for a pair of prestigious awards this season. Jurgensmeier is Morningside’s rep on the National Football Foundation ScholarAthlete list. VonSeggern represents the program on the American Football Coaches Association’s Good Works nomination list. This will be year five of Daberkow’s tenure at Concordia. His first four seasons have resulted in records of 6-4 in 2017, 3-7 in 2018, 3-7 in 2019, and 4-4 in 2020. The 2021 squad will be the most veteran Bulldog bunch that Daberkow has put on the field since the 2017 season. Concordia returns eight starters on both sides of the ball. In terms of accolades, the headliners are first-team All-GPAC running back Jonah Weyand and All-American linebacker Lane Napier.
