FOOTBALL SATURDAY, SEPT. 18 A new chapter of Great Plains Athletic Conference football begins for Morningside University this afternoon. Mount Marty University, in its first season, visits Elwood Olsen Stadium. Head coach Steve Ryan’s Mustangs, sporting a 2-0 record, have gotten out of the gate fast, winning 63-7 over Concordia and 5614 over Doane. The Lancers, coached by John Michaletti, sit 0-2, dropping contests against Dakota Wesleyan 20-3 and the University of Jamestown 35-6 to start the program’s gridiron journey.
THE MATCH-UP Mside’s offense already has taken residence in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’ high-rent district. The offense is among the national top 10 in 13 different categories, including total points (119 – No. 3) and scoring per contest (59.5 – No. 1); yards per outing (615 – No. 1); passing yardage per appearance (465.5 – No. 1) and passing yards per attempt (14.1 – No. 1); and passing scores (10 – No. 2). The Morningside defense also headlines the national numbers by way of 12 sacks which lead the way. They’ve allowed just 10.5 points per game. Individual leaders for Ryan’s crew include senior quarterback Joe Dolincheck (659 yards passing/eight touchdowns/81.6 percent completion percentage); the upperclassman/freshman combo of senior Anthony Sims and freshman Ryan Cole in the backfield (Sims – 128 yds./three touchdowns; Cole – four touchdowns); a juggernaut senior wide receiver combination of Austin Johnson and Reid Jurgensmeier who have combined for 26 catches, over 500 yards and five touchdowns; and junior defensive back Lonell Boyd, Jr., and senior linebacker Tyler Wingert who each have 16 tackles to their credit and have combined for four of the unit’s 12 sacks among others. The arms of sophomore Kaden Ladwig and Dolincheck provided more than enough cushion for the team’s road opener on Sept. 11. Ladwig, in his first collegiate start, and Dolincheck lit up the skies around Doane University’s Al Papik Field to the tune of 416 yards and four touchdowns. Ladwig proved poised in his inaugural starting opportunity, going nine-of-13 for 218 yards and a score. Dolincheck’s reliability was once on display, as he hit on three paydirt strikes and 198 yards during an 11-of-14 effort. Johnson was one of six beneficiaries of the Mustangs passing attack. He gathered in eight catches for 261 yards and two touchdowns, as his yardage total ranked ninth on the highest single-game efforts in program history. Jurgensmeier wasn’t too far off triple digits, either, catching five balls for 91 yards. A solid defensive effort went along with the Mustangs’ passing headlines. Two standouts, Boyd, Jr. and Wingert, helped

Power of Perseverance HAHLBECK OVERCOMES OBSTACLES TO PLAY GAME HE LOVES Seven knee injuries could have been enough for most young men to call it quits on the gridiron. For Jason Hahlbeck, the words of his father, Heath, wouldn’t allow it. “Dad always told me that you need to finish whatever you start,” he reflected. “Each time I got hurt, the thought of not playing football never occurred to me. It was just time to get going again and work to get back with my teammates and friends.” Hahlbeck, a fifth-year senior on the Morningside University offensive line, takes his persevering personality to practice and on to the game field in each instance. “I’m fortunate to have seen some of the best display their leadership while I’ve been here,” he noted. “Guys like Garrett Temme and Trey Bradburn, both All-Americans, showed me how to do things the right way on and off the field. I’ve taken that lead and am doing the same with the new class. Myself and the rest of the upperclassmen want to keep the tradition of strong offensive play going.” He and fellow senior Hunter Behrens, one of his many friends on the 2021 squad, make up an excellent combination for coach Jay Schlichte to help steer the ship upfront. “We’re a little bit of a good cop, bad cop scenario,” he mentioned with a laugh. “Hunter can be the one some guys go to when things are getting rough, as he likes being everyone’s buddy. I’m the one who gets everyone in line if needed.” “For me, being a talker, I understand there’s need to be more vocal when it’s called for,” he added. Hahlbeck’s dad isn’t the only role model driving him in life. Schlichte, his position coach, also plays an important role. “He has a brilliant mind schemes-wise,” he said. “The stuff he sees in film is so impressive and works well. We didn’t surrender any sacks last year and, honestly, haven’t had too many hits to the QB since he has been here. He fits things up for different teams very well.” “Coach Schlichte is just a lot of fun to be around,” he added. “He keeps the mood up in practices and games in different ways, especially when he wants to race us out of the locker room. Some guys like challenging him during those times, but most just stand back and chuckle a little about it. It shows the passion he has not only for our group but the entire team.” Passion for the game and life is another Hahlbeck calling card. “My dad is a construction worker and always talks about never giving up and the idea that no matter how bad I think I have it, others have it a lot tougher.” An ideal he’ll take from Morningside when his collegiate journey is complete – succeeding through perseverance whenever it’s needed – something he understands well.

The underclassman tandem of freshman Na’Kia Johnson and sophomore Ka’ua Nishigaya produced 148 of Mount Marty’s 236 yards regarding total offense. Freshman fullback William Rauch accounted for the touchdown on the ground, too. Junior defensive back Avry Rice and sophomore linebacker Gaven Craig topped the defense, ending with ten tackles. Freshman defensive lineman Albert Perez picked up a sack and a half and two tackles for losses.
