ON THE FIRST TEE...
With Nick Dietzen
The official start to summer is a week away! This means that tournaments and competitions begin to take center stage for the MSGA staff and golfers around the Treasure State who want to test themselves in the cauldron of competition.
Last week, the MSGA kicked off championship season with the Montana State Match Play Championships. The tournament saw two defending champions, Kade McDonough and Scarlet Weidig successfully navigate a series of matches to claim victories and MSGA
Hall of Famer, Bill Dunn added another victory to his illustrious resume.
We now turn our attention to the State Junior Championships in Polson. I have the distinct privilege of being at the age where many of my friends and peers have children beginning to try out different activities. Athletics, the arts, and outdoor recreation can contribute to a well-rounded childhood. Some children quickly learn the full spectrum of emotions that come with competition. Nerves, frustration, delight, friendship and most impor-

tantly, hopefully they learn about themselves. In Polson, there will be 107 girls and boys competing, most ages 13-18. Our hope is that they will enjoy the competition, make friends, and walk away with further enthusiasm to continue playing all summer long.
As I travel throughout the state and meet golfers of all ability levels, I have been struck by the focus on results and score. Finishing up a round, often the first people to say hello will open with “how did you play?” I’ve had good scores where I didn’t play amazing, I’ve hit the ball well and had a few bad breaks with a middling score. We’ve all been there. Your score is your score and there is some beauty in the simplicity. “What did you shoot?” A common refrain at a golf course near you. I find this usually a thoughtless question as one person’s 82 is their best ever and leads to celebratory drinks and a photo of the card for others an 82 is followed by a trip to the driving range or putting green to figure out what’s wrong.
I have always enjoyed reading through scorecards and leaderboards first in major championships following along with television broadcasts and now at our own events. At the match play, one of our players posted a great round of four-under-par. He only made two pars. I can’t relate from my traditional rounds, but it was a fun scorecard to follow along with the ups and downs, even if there are no pictures on the scorecard, every round of golf tells its own story, and the scorecard provides the introduction.
From now through September every 15th of the month throughout the tournament season will provide members with tourna-

ment-focused content. Some of you will be very interested in catching up on the leaderboards, celebrating great performances from fellow members and learning about courses and competitions as the season progresses. Others may have no interest and quickly send to the virtual trash can. That’s fine too.
Competition isn’t for everyone and our hope at the MSGA is that while we are rooted and honor our history in competitions (107 years!), we know that being outside, being active and enjoying a few holes whether in solitude, with friends or even strangers that it’s not how you played, but that you played. We all love golf for different reasons and if you get the competition bug, we’d love to see you at competition down the road. We have all
ages represented and different formats from match play, stroke play, Stableford and team events. We will continue to look at further events and meeting our members where they are – be it at a competition or a fun day focused on just playing a new course. Thank you for being a member and we hope you enjoy your summer and if you’re interested in our tournament content or know someone who might want to learn more – forward it along to a friend!

Always appreciate the opportunity to connect with greatness - in this case it's shaking hands with back-to-bacl Montana State Match Play Champion Kade McDonough, who bested a stacked field at Bill Roberts Golf Course earlier this month.
USGA
MCDONOUGH, WEIDIG REPEAT IN MATCH PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP; DUNN SECURES SENIOR TITLE
BY NICK DIETZEN MSGA Executive Director
Many accomplished amateurs will agree that winning back-to-back match play titles is the most difficult thing to do in tournament golf. Thanks to regular upsets, a daunting number of holes played and the certain “je ne sais quois” of surprises finding their way to match play – it was a great surprise to see not one, but two repeat champions in the 2024 Montana State Match Play Championships.
Bill Roberts Golf Course in Helena for the second year in a row played host to the Montana State Match Play Championships. With a distinguished field of amateur golfers, the longest weekend in MSGA golf provided excellent play during exceptional weather and conditions.
Missoula’s Kade McDonough won for the second consecutive year with a 5&4 victory over Helena’s Joe Mcgreevey. McDonough, who will be attending the University of Utah to compete for the Utes played beautiful golf, mixing in smart plays with irons off tees, using his prodigious distance and managing his way around the golf course. Mcgreevey, a current Montana Tech golfer, who participated Friday in a 10-hole playoff for 7 spots, made his way all the way to the finals thanks to a bevvy of birdies and leaned on his course knowledge and creative shot making. Ultimately, his run
was cut short as McDonough claimed another championship belt.
In the semifinals, McDonough defeated his Four Ball partner, Sean Ramsbacher (Missoula) 3&2. Both players exhibited elite distance and birdies were commonly the winning number for hole victories. Eventually, McDonough outlasted his partner – the two claimed the 2023 State Four Ball Championship at Missoula Country Club. In the other semifinal, Mcgreevey went an extra hole in his match with Alex Escobar (Missoula). Mcgreevey, the 26-seed had an opportunity to win on the 17th hole, but his putt missed and on the 18th hole, Escobar made a clutch 15-foot eagle putt to force an extra hole. Mcgreevey rebounded nearly holing out on his second shot from 117 yards on hole 1 en route to a birdie and win in 19 holes.
In the women’s final, it was a pair of teammates as Scarlet Weidig and Lauren Greeny faced off in an all-Bobcat final. The Montana State University teammates are no strangers to MSGA titles. It was the Match Play Champ, Weidig who navigated Bill Roberts expertly and used strong tee-to-green play to win 5&4 over her teammate. Greeny, the reigning Montana State Women’s Amateur Champion, defeated Bella Johnson (Billings) 1 up to make the finals in a tough match featuring Johnson, a soon-to-be Montana Grizzly player. Johnson, who owns the course record for women at Bill

Roberts gave Greeny a run, but was unable to extend the match on hole 18. Weidig defeated another teammate, Jordan Briggs 6&5 in her semifinal. Weidig’s tour-de-force included playing only 27 of the final 36 holes thanks to her dominant effort, winning for the second time in a row.
The Men’s Senior Division saw a first-time winner of the event as Missoula’s Bill Dunn earned a title belt with a 4&3 victory over fellow Garden City resident, Ron Ramsbacher. Dunn’s championship resume is vast – a winner of the State Amateur, Mid-Amateur, Senior Amateur and State Senior Tournament added a new title with his match play win. Dunn was tested by Bozeman’s Todd Sisson who put together a great string of play to reach the semifinals thanks to accurate driving and birdie-making. Dunn defeated Sisson 2&1, in a back-and-forth match. On the other side of the bracket, two-time Montana State Super Senior Champion Cory Bedell (Missoula) lost to Ramsbacher 4&2 after a strong effort of match victories to reach the semis.
On Saturday, three divisions of 16 players competed in match play. With two matches each, the field was whittled down to four players in each division and the semifinals.
In the men’s division defending champion Kade McDonough won his matchup over Tye Boone 3&2. McDonough came into the round as a one seed and had four birdies. He will face off with the current Bill Roberts club champion Nicholas Balcken who won his round 16 match over Billy Smith 4&3 with six birdies on the round. Sean Ramsbacher had seven birdies and won his round over Royce Taylor 3&2. Cameron Hackman defeated last year's runner-up Tyler Avery 1-up. After a bit of an upset in the round of 32, the 31st seeded Cash Golden continues to move on after defeating Zach Brehm 6&4. Joe Mcgreevey beat Nick Wrigg 4&3, Adam Escobar defeated Ryder Conner 2-up and one of the youngest players in the field,
John Gilbert, defeated Sammy Smith 6&4.
In the women’s division the top three ranked players (Scarlet Weidig, Lauren Greeny and Isabella Johnson) had byes in the round of 16. Number four ranked Jordan Briggs had seven birdies en route to victory 5&3 over Annika Brocklebank. Last years runner-up Anna DeMars had five birdies and won her match over Anna Stensrud 2&1. Emma Woods defeated Stella Claridge 6&4, Olivia Mcgreevey needed 20 holes to defeat Charmon Hansen, and BreAnna Cameron beat Lauren Mayala 8&6
In the senior men’s division number one seed and last year's runner-up Bill Leach had five birdies en route to a 5&4 victory over Rick Remitz. The reigning senior tournament champion Bill Dunn won his match with Marshall Bettendorf 2&1. Last year's Match Play winner, Carl Funk defeated Todd Hober 2-up. Ron Ramsbacher and Jay Anderson battled it out for 21 holes before Ramsbacher secured the victory. Mark Van Deusen beat Bryon Mayala 4&3, Joe Cielak defeated Jon Radabaugh 4&3, and Todd Sisson won his match over Bill Petrovish 7&6.
On the first day of the event, the men’s division had 59 players ages 15 to 45 competed in stroke play for 32 spots and featured a 10-way playoff for the final seven spots in the match play bracket. Kade McDonough posted the low round with a six birdie, one bogey effort en route to 67 (-5) to secure the top seed. Caleb Myers of Lewistown had the second lowest round with 68 (-4) in a colorful 18 holes that included only two pars. Myers made eight birdies, one eagle (14) and six bogeys. Eleven players in total broke par.
In the senior division 23 players competed for 16 spots. Bill Leach was the only player to break par as last year’s runner-up posted 71 (-1) with four birdies. In the women’s division 13 players competed. Last year’s champion, Scarlett Weidig shot 71 (-1) to claim the top seed with three birdies in her round.

WINNERS CROWNED AT 48TH ANNUAL DON BARNETT MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT
BY TY SPARING MSGA Communications Coordinator
The 48th annual Don Barnett Memorial Tournament was at the Missoula Country Club recently. Held May 24-27, the competitive Barnett Tournament is a 54-hole event that brings in some of the best golfers in the region.
It was déjà vu again as Salt Lake City’s Jack Holmgren won the men’s division for the third year in a row. With all three rounds under 70, he finished at -7 over the three rounds, managing to hold off Sean Ramsbacher by A stroke.
Holmgren, originally from Minnesota, played collegiately at University of Iowa before transferring to the University of South Dakota where he graduated in 2018. Having heard about the Barnett Memorial through a Montana friend in 2022, Holmgren decided to give it a shot and make the trip to Missoula. It was a good choice as he’s now a three-peat champion of one of Montana’s oldest and most premier golfing tournaments.
Missoula native Sean Ramsbacher kept the pressure on with a third-round score of 63, finishing in the runner-up spot just one stroke back of Holmgren. He caught fire in the third round with six birdies and an eagle in the last 11 holes of play. Always tough on his home course, Ramsbacher is the reigning co-champ of the Montana State Four-Ball championship
held at the Missoula Country Club last fall.
Laurel’s Morgan Corcoran was the title winner on the women’s side with a final score of +21. The Missoula Country Club is a good course for the former All-Conference Rocky Mountain College golfer as it’s the same place she won the Montana State Women’s Amateur title in 2018. Corcoran’s first round of 73 gave her a six-stroke lead that she managed to add onto throughout the tournament. Second place went to multiple time Barnett winner, Son Fleck at +34.
In the seniors flight Missoula’s Steve Bell took home the championship hardware with a three-round score of +1. He had an eagle and eight birdies over the course of the 54-hole event, beating out Brad Grattan and Matt Sheridan who tied for second at +7.
The Memorial Day golf tournament at the Missoula Country Club is one of the longest running golf events in the state, going back over 90 years, when Dr. Don Barnett himself was chairing the original invitationals. Barnett was known as “the father of golf” in Missoula, credited with designing much of the course at the Missoula Country Club, particularly the 16th hole which was the first grass green in the state. The name was later changed in 1977 to the Don Barnett Memorial Day Tournament shortly after Barnett died.

MOORE, HURLBERT WIN DIVISIONS AT 31ST ANNUAL LAKE CITY OPEN
BY TY SPARING MSGA Communications Coordinator
The unofficial start of the spring tournament calendar kicked off in Polson with the 31st annual Lake City Open. The Lake City Open features professional and amateur divisions, both bringing some of the best players in the state for two rounds of competition.
Having recently gone pro, the reigning Montana State Amateur champion Joey Moore came away with the title by three strokes over past Lake City Open champion Ryan Malby. Moore had 13 birdies and one eagle over the two rounds which put him at -10 overall and managed to secure the $3500 purse for the winner. Following Moore was Garrett Woodin and former PGA tour player Mike Grob

who tied for third at -6, while Jimmy Mee and Christopher Lien tied for fifth place at -4. Both Grob and Mee are past champions.
In the Amateur division Billings-native Craig Hurlbert took home title honors after two rounds of 68, which put him at -8. His consistent play certainly helped as he hit nine birdies and 26 pars over the 36 holes of play. Hurlbert was the nation’s top ranked senior amateur in the year of 2020, and has won a host of Montana tournaments including the Montana State Senior Amateur in 2020 and 4th of July tournament in Whitefish in 2011.

PROFESSIONAL DIVISION
was the 2001 Montana State Amateur champion Justin Dorr and Polson’s youth phenom Max Milton at -6. Following them was Sean Ramsbacher and Kade McDonough who tied for fourth place at -5. Ramsbacher and McDonough also happened to be title winning teammates in last fall’s Montana State FourBall championship.
The Lake City Open was also fortunate to receive a $7000 donation by tournament sponsor Polson Scholarship and Education Foundation.
