YEAR OF THE MIDDLE STATES NETWORK

Based in Philadelphia, the Middle States Association is the worldwide leader in accreditation and school improvement. For over 135 years, Middle States has been helping school leaders establish and reach their goals, develop strategic plans, promote staff development and advance student achievement. With more than 2,800 accredited schools and school systems in 39 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands and in over 110 countries, Middle States is proud of its continuing legacy and its ongoing innovations to meet the challenges of improving education in the 21st century.

A MESSAGE FROM THE CO-CHAIRS

Dear Colleagues, It is our honor to share with you the 2023 Annual Report for the Middle States Association Commissions on Elementary and Secondary Schools (MSA-CESS).

As you will read in the pages that follow, this past year has been an exciting one at Middle States.

In September 2022, we held a Meet the President Forum to introduce member school leaders to our new president Christian Talbot and provide an opportunity for participants to ask questions and gain insight into Christian’s vision for the future of Middle States.

We have been off and running ever since.

Christian and our talented Middle States team launched the “Year of the Middle States Network,” which provided unique opportunities throughout the school year for educators around the world to connect with their peers and share in the collective wisdom of the Middle States network — a network that continues to grow and expand.

In fact, this fiscal year, more than 675 schools earned Middle States accreditation for the first time, increasing our total membership to 2,819, including public, private, and independent schools; learning service providers; career and technical schools; and early childhood education centers.

Under Christian’s leadership, Middle States has also expanded its services to include leadership and professional development workshops to inspire and support educators as they seek to transform themselves and their schools.

This is a natural extension of the school accreditation work that Middle States has prided itself on for more than 135 years and further builds on our legacy of school growth and improvement.

As co-chairs of MSA-CESS, we are grateful to our fellow Commissioners for their commitment to ensuring Middle States remains the leader in accreditation and school transformation.

We are confident that Christian and his talented team will continue to take our organization to even greater heights so we can help more schools — and students — realize their dreams.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends, James Clear, author of Atomic Habits, wrote that “Curiosity is the beginning of knowledge. Action is the beginning of change.”

When I arrived at MSA in July 2022, I was deeply curious about you and your learning communities.

That curiosity was the “beginning of knowledge” for me in several areas: ■ From our Fall 2022 Membership Survey, I learned that a majority of you

want help with change leadership, teacher growth and development, and mental health.

■ From interviews with some of you who are guiding significant change,

I learned that many of you are rising to the challenges of increasing complexity.

■ From my conversations with many of you, I have learned that you are

deeply ambivalent about the role generative AI is playing and will play in learning.

Based on that knowledge, I’m proud of the action that MSA undertook in 2022-23: Supporting change leadership

So what is next?

First, we are expanding our workshop offerings, including “AI 101,” a sandbox introduction to AI for teachers who are curious (or worried) about AI in the classroom; and “Expeditionaries,” a workshop for students on social entrepreneurship powered by generative AI. Second, we have lined up more “Forces at Play” reports on the impact of AI on schools.

Third, we will continue to offer live and recorded webinars with subject matter experts who can help you think about and begin to implement wise change in your learning community.

We are honored to serve as your guide through the accreditation journey and other changes that help you to serve your students and the faculty and staff who support them.

■ We hosted webinars with Michael Horn, Annie Murphy Paul, and

Jim Incardona and Camille Banks-Lee on critical evolutions needed in schools.

■ We issued our Innovative Leaders Report.

■ We launched our first change leadership masterclass, “The Two

Journeys.” We will be running another session this Fall and have planned many additional masterclasses on change leadership.

In the meantime, to riff on James Clear, I hope that this report piques your curiosity, provides some new knowledge, and inspires you to action.

Supporting teacher growth and development ■ Throughout 2022-23, we designed and implemented a comprehensive

teacher growth and development program at Fordham Prep (NY).

■ In August 2023, we ran our “Best Teachers on Earth” workshop at

Padua Academy (DE).

Supporting schools in the responsible integration of AI

CONNECTING AND LEARNING DURING THE YEAR OF THE MIDDLE STATES NETWORK Middle States kicked off the “Year of the Middle States Network” in the fall of 2022 with the goal of inspiring and supporting education leaders working toward transformational change in their school communities.

Throughout the year we hosted a series of live virtual events featuring experts in school management, education technology, mental health and more. We also shared numerous blog posts and other resources examining challenges in education and offering innovative solutions.

The year culminated with an in-person master class in change leadership, which challenged participants to reflect on where they and their schools have come from, make sense of where they are now, and plan for where they’re headed.

Through each activity we sought to provide school leaders with tools for implementing change in their educational communities, and connected them with Middle States members from around the world.

REIMAGINING EDUCATION

In October 2022, acclaimed author and educational strategist Michael B. Horn joined Middle States President Christian Talbot for an exclusive live virtual interview and Q&A about reimagining education.

More than 180 educators from around the globe logged-in for the discussion centered around Horn’s game-changing ideas on education innovation as outlined in his book, From Reopen to Reinvent.

In a series of related blog posts, Talbot highlighted key takeaways of Horn’s approach starting with the argument that the COVID-19 pandemic should be viewed not only as a threat, but even more so as an opportunity. Using Horn’s book as a guide, Talbot laid out the following framework for leading change in schools:

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IS HERE TO STAY The expanding presence of artificial intelligence in education was top of mind at Middle States and in schools around the world this past year.

She urged school leaders to:

1 Develop an AI policy now.

2 Define what great learning

looks like so that AI does not amplify weak practice.

To help school leaders gain a better understanding of one of the biggest forces at play in education today — and the foreseeable future — Middle States invited education investor Jennifer Carolan to share her insights during a live virtual event, AI in Education: A New Frontier.

3 Encourage teachers and

students to experiment with generative AI tools.

4 Provide time and resources

for teachers to become comfortable with AI tools. Don’t simply put one more thing on teachers’ plates.

Carolan, who spent several years teaching in public schools before launching Reach Capital, which invests in educational technology, noted that AI is not going away. In fact, generative AI tools will only improve with time, Carolan said, and are already being incorporated into people’s daily work.

“Generative AI is just going to get better and better, and these tools are going to become more important, and they will be integrated into the workflow, just the way technology has over time.”

LEARNING HAPPENS OUTSIDE OF THE BRAIN In February 2023, we hosted a live webinar with Annie Murphy Paul, award-winning science writer and author of The Extended Mind. Paul’s research on the science of learning challenges the assumption that our best thinking happens inside of the brain. In fact, humanity has achieved its most impressive feats only by “extending” the brain’s power with resources borrowed from the body, other people, and the material world.

What should this tell us? That there is a lot at stake with how we teach, and design schools.

According to Paul, students can think with their bodies, which means the timing and structure of school recess and physical education programs is more important than we realized.

The built environment — that is, school design — can also influence learning, meaning that the design and layout of your school may be impacting student success.

Finally, Paul taught us that thought can be developed through relationships, further solidifying what we already know about the importance of creating strong bonds between educators and students.

MITIGATING ANXIETY IN SCHOOLS

Many schools are rethinking their approach to student well-being in response to a precipitous rise in anxiety and mental health issues among children and teens. Middle States member school Seton Hall Preparatory School, in West Orange, N.J., designed and implemented a unique initiative to combat student anxiety and is using data to measure its impact.

DURING A REGUL AR SEGMENT OF THE SCHOOL WEEK, STUDENTS AND TEACHERS FROM SETON HALL PREPAR ATORY SCHOOL COME TOGETHER FOR MINDFULNESS AND HEALTH ACTIVITIES.

In April, Jim Incardona, Ph.D., assistant headmaster for academics at Seton Hall Preparatory School, and psychotherapist and former teacher Camille BanksLee, joined Middle States for “Mitigating Anxiety in Schools,” a live virtual event.

Incardona and Banks-Lee provided practical tips for helping students navigate anxiety and mental health challenges. They included: Match actions with words. Students and families hear schools say that they take their mental health seriously, but schools must match actions to those words.

To evolve how your school addresses mental health, start with attention, time, and new behaviors. Schools must focus their attention on addressing student mental health, provide teachers, school leaders and students with the time they need to make a measurable impact on student mental health, and must be prepared to adopt new behaviors, such as a change in schedules or programs.

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES ON MITIGATING ANXIETY IN STUDENTS:

It’s all about relationships. Research shows that strong relationships with caring adults is one of the greatest factors for student success.

SUPPORTING SCHOOLS ON THEIR CHANGE JOURNEY CHANGE MAKERS IN EDUCATION WORKSHOP

Middle States hosted school leaders for the The Two Journeys Workshop in Philadelphia in June. In this masterclass in change leadership, participants reflected on where they and their schools had been, and where they are headed. Participants returned to their schools with a personal leadership profile and a toolkit for implementing change in their school community.

“It was really wonderful to meet with such an intimate group to discuss big changes within our schools–seeing our situation from different perspectives made a huge difference.”

FORCES AT PLAY REPORT SERIES In June, we launched the “Forces At Play” report series, which is designed to provide education leaders with insights, leadingedge research, and tips to navigate the ever-evolving education landscape. In each report, Middle States leaders and outside experts delve into a pressing trend in education and offer school leaders and teachers actionable strategies and guidance.

The first report in the series, MSA Innovative Leaders Executive Summary, is a compilation of feedback from innovative leaders from Middle States member schools around the world. We learned about the biggest obstacles they face, and how they approach change in their schools.

TEACHER GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT As part of a new initiative, Middle States began working with leaders and teachers at Fordham Preparatory School in Bronx, N.Y., to design and implement a teacher growth and development program. We started by asking teachers: how often do you receive immediate, focused and actionable feedback? We believe that teachers at Fordham Prep and every other school should receive constructive, relevant feedback on their work that is delivered in a way that fosters reflection and growth.

NEW& NOTABLE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION RECOGNITION

COMMISSIONERS GATHER FOR BI-ANNUAL MEETINGS

In October 2022, the U.S. Department of Education renewed its recognition of Middle States as a reliable authority on the quality of postsecondary education.

The Middle States Commissions on Elementary and Secondary Schools, comprising education leaders from around the world, meet twice annually to conduct organizational business and review and vote on accreditation actions. In the 2023 fiscal year, the Commissioners voted to accredit or reaccredit 676 schools, school systems and other learning providers.

Federal recognition makes it possible for some Middle States accredited career and technical schools to access Title IV funds, or federal student aid. Many Middle States member schools rely on federal student aid to teach and serve a diverse community of students.

To earn federal recognition, Middle States underwent a rigorous review process that culminated in a presentation in July before the National Advisory Committee on Institutional Quality and Integrity (NACIQI), an independent federal advisory committee that advises the U.S. Secretary of Education on matters related to accreditation.

The recognition will last five years, which is the longest possible term.

NEWLY FORMED CAREER & TECHNOLOGY ADVISORY COMMITTEE PROVIDES KEY THOUGHT LEADERSHIP Middle States launched a Career & Technology Advisory Committee to provide leadership and expertise on issues pertaining to career and technical member schools.

There are more than 100 career and technical schools in the Middle States network. This growing network of member schools face a unique set of challenges as they prepare students for the workforce and beyond. The advisory committee is helping Middle States staff and volunteers continue to stay informed of issues that are important to the career and technical school community.

MIDDLE STATES STAFF RETREAT Middle States staff participated in a three-day retreat in January 2023 during which they reviewed the organization’s strategic goals and assessed where Middle States is in meeting them. Each staff member was challenged to consider their unique role within the organization, and to think about how they and their department can evolve to meet the changing needs of its global network of schools.

CONGRATULATIONS

TO OUR OUTSTANDING VOLUNTEERS! Congratulations to the 2023 recipients of the Susan K. Nicklas Outstanding Volunteer Award and the Henry G. Cram Accreditation Leadership Award.

CHUCK COPT, campus director for Hunter Business School, in Medford, N.Y., earned the Susan K. Nicklas Outstanding Volunteer Award.

Copt joined Hunter Business School in 2009 and has been managing operations for its Medford campus for the past year. Previously, he served as corporate director of education for the school. As an active Middle States volunteer for four years, Copt has participated in team visits to schools in New York, and led teams of volunteers on visits to career and technical schools in New Jersey and Virginia. He has also served on Middle States committees that advise on issues affecting domestic and career and technical schools. Copt earned his bachelor’s degree from Ithaca College in Ithaca, N.Y., and his master’s degree in education administration from the State University of New York at Stony Brook, N.Y. Susan K. Nicklas served as the executive director of the Middle States Commissions on Secondary Schools from 2002 to 2005 and was a member of the staff since 1993.

JOSEPH DE JULIUS, assistant principal of Lenape High School in Medford, N.J., earned the Henry G. Cram Accreditation Leadership Award.

De Julius became assistant principal of Lenape High School in 2016 after teaching business education for four years at the school. Prior to that he spent seven years teaching at Eastampton Community School. In addition to overseeing the business education, technology education, and U.S. Army Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) departments at Lenape High School, De Julius is responsible for the school’s Middle States accreditation process.

De Julius earned his bachelor’s degree in business, computer, and information technology education from Temple University in Philadelphia, Pa., and a master’s degree in educational administration from Rider University in Lawrenceville, N.J. The Accreditation Leadership Award is named for Henry G. Cram, who retired from Middle States in 2019 after serving as president for nearly 14 years.
