Wabi expresses imperfection and simplicity, while sabi expresses the effect of time upon an object. wabi is more subjective and personal, while sabi is objective.

Research Framework

Hypothesis An understanding and contextual application of an intangible philosophy based on a lost way of life – Wabi-sabi (Buddhism), enables a corresponding architectural manifestation.

Intent of Design Intervention Architecture intervention based on where the philosophy of Wabi-Sabi (Buddhism) can be incorporated and would influence user the most through architecture. Functions which are maybe completely or semi depending on architecture as a tool which are given importance in day-to-day life.

The University of Mumbai (known earlier as University of Bombay) is one of the oldest and premier universities in India. It was established in 1857 consequent upon “Wood’s Education Dispatch”, and it is one amongst the first three Universities in India.

MITHI RIVER STUDY ➢History: Mithi river was storm drain. The river’s existence dates back to the 3rd century BC, when Buddhist monks inhabited the Kanheri caves near SGNP. Now river is more of a sewer than storm drain, ➢Mithi river runs through the city of Mumbai and carries overflow discharges of Powai and Vihar lakes. ➢The river passes densely populated areas and industrial areas in the city of Mumbai and finally meets the Arabian sea at the Mahim creek, travelling a total length of about 18km and has a catchment area of 7,295 ha. ➢In the past, the river has experienced flooding in 2005. ➢It serves a dual purpose of a sewer for the area carrying sewage as well as storm water to sea. ➢The ever – expanding urban sprawl has caused the Mithi to narrow.

WETLAND STUDY ➢A wetland is land area that is saturated with water either permanently or seasonally, such that it takes on the characters of a distinct ecosystem. ➢The primary factor that distinguishes wetlands from other land forms or water bodies is the characteristics vegetation of aquatic plants, adapted to the unique hydric soil. ➢Two types of wetland, natural and constructed. ➢Wetland at Mumbai university, Kalina are proposed constructed wetland due to the natural contours slope. ➢Wetland at university act as phytorid bed that treat effluent from septic tank.

The treated water is then used at the lake and garden of Mumbai university, Kalina. ➢Phytorid system are engineered wetland system which are used for treatment of wastewater and particularly for treatment of sewage. ➢This is a stand-alone technology and is very effective alternate to conventional activated sludge treatment plants

Emergent aquatic macrophytes are defined as plants that are rooted in shallow water with vegetative parts emerging above the water surface.

PROGRAM COMPONENTS

Information about the existing courses from Mumbai University, Kalina ➢Centre for Buddhist Studies is a new interdisciplinary initiative of the University of Mumbai that commenced during the academic year 2014-15. ➢It attempts to generate interest (through courses) and pursue rigorous research (through Workshops, Seminars and Publications) in Buddhism. ➢ The participants in this initiative include both academicians with expertise in Buddhism and research students (who are interested in pursuing Buddhism either from the point of view of its practicality or its theoretical foundations). ➢ This initiative is committed to the inextricable link between theory and practice in the pursuit of academic research programs.

• Study tours can be arranged to all the 2-year courses archaeological sites nationally and internally.

NEGATIVE SPACE - MA ➢Wabi-sabi design needs to have negative space. ➢Negative space refer to perception of a space, gap or interval, without necessarily requiring a physical compositional element. ➢Ma is the Japanese word for negative space. ➢Ma is interpreted as “an emptiness full of possibilities, like a promise yet to be fulfilled”. ➢Ma refers to an empty space, often holding as much important as the rest of physical space and focusing the viewer on the intention of negative space.
