GMSG: Now Trending
By Ahuva Davis ('27)
adies and gentlemen, gather ‘round, we’re diving head first into a new school year full of new trends, and this year, trends have already begun to spread like wildfire throughout the GMSG. On the first day of school, girls entered the building with hair slicked back, long black flowy skirts, and Crocs with Jibbitz to have a trendy look from head to toe. But as quickly as new trends hit the school coming back from summer, they disappear as the fall season brings newer and more up-todate trends. Teenagers all over the world have officially switched to fall fashion, wearing neutral colors, red, and mixed metal jewelry Some trends come and go, some are here to stay, but there will always be a new trend for the GMSGers to try. Crocs are a new and seemingly surprising trend. Crocs happen to be are the perfect school shoe, they are comfortable and stylish in one. Crocs can even be personalized by designing and adding your own Jibbitz, little charms that are inserted into the holes of the crocs. As sophomore Eliana Basurto said, “When I’m in a rush, crocs are easy to put on and will match with any outfit.” Freshman Debi Cohen agreed, adding “You are also able to play sports in them by moving the strap back and putting them into ‘sports mode’”. Crocs are in line with the school dress code and are super trendy, making them a perfect wear for the GMSG.

Everyone knows that school air and Memphis humidity is never good for hair, so the slicked back braid trend was quickly adapted by the GMSG. The slick backed braid fights humidity and makes you look put together without a lot of effort. It doesn’t take long to do so it’s good for when you're running short on time and need a trusty hair style. All you have to do is make a classic ponytail and slick it tight with some gel or hair spray. Then you tie it up in a tight braid to complete the look. It's the perfect hairstyle for GMSGers because it also lets you hide your dirty hair if you didn't get a chance to wash it. The slick back hairdo has gone viral on Tiktok and other platforms to match the “clean girl” aesthetic girls strive for. The “clean girl” aesthetic is a mix of a slick back hairstyle and light makeup. GMSGers love to feel and look put together for school, so the “clean girl” aesthetic, and more importantly, the slick back braid has been a great trend.

With fall just around the corner, the new clothing trends have been coming in quickly and are expected to hit the GMSG in the near future. First, neutral colors in clothing is what everyone is raving about. This is a big shift from summer, in which bright colors were a must have. For fall, neutrals that can match with many different things are very in. Because they are easy to match and make for easy put together outfits, this trend will likely make its way to the GMSG. As for a fun pop, the color red is said to be the color of the season. You can expect to see lots of red in clothing, shoes, purses, and hats. Both neutrals and red, have a lot of potential to be found in many GMSGers closets this fall.
Mixed metals is a form of jewelry that combines both silver and gold, and just so happens to solve the great debate within the GMSG. GMSGers have been debating whether gold or silver matches better with their skin tone. But with mixed metal jewelry, they no longer have to pick between gold and silver, they can wear both! Teen Vogue says, “The combination adds dimension to any outfit.” Mixed metals solve the ongoing debate and look good with anything. What more can you ask for?
As summer comes to a close, and fall approaches, trends continue to evolve. The new trends of the fall bring in outfit ideas, solutions for hot debates, and best of all, a way to keep water from spilling on your homework! The trends that started the year have potential to stick through, but the big question is will the GMSGers try out these new fall trends? Will you?
