FRANK GALLO
A CLASSIC AMERICAN SCULPTOR
GALLO
Frank Gallo (American, b.1933) is a sculptor who primarily depicts the female form. He was born in Toledo, OH, and attended the University of Toledo and Cranbrook Academy of Art. In 1959, he received his MFA from the State University of Iowa, where he worked with the printmaker Mauricio Lasansky. During this time, he started creating works like Quiet Nude, using polyester resin with fiberglass. The result was a shiny surface that removed the realistic element in his life-like figures. He felt that using these materials would allow him to control the color, light, and reflectivity of his subjects. Gallo’s forms carry erotic undertones, but he feels that he is glorifying the female form rather than objectifying it. Due to health concerns, Gallo began to make cast-paper and paperrelief works around 1977, sustaining his interest in studying light and the figure. He primarily uses cotton fiber to mimic skin texture in his figurative reliefs. Gallo’s works have been included in exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art, from 1964 to 1967, the Smithsonian Institute, in 1968, the Venice Biennale, in 1968, the Art Institute of Chicago, in 1978, and a retrospective at the Paine Art Center in Oshkosh, WI, in 1983. The artist was awarded a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship in 1966. NOMADIC
