Tyler High School

O

ver 400 Tyler High School students will walk across the stage with their diploma at the end of this month.

Valedictorian Jean Brigido Romero plans to attend the University of Texas at Austin to major in business. He is president of the Technology Student Association and a member of the National Honor Society, UIL math competition team and the Tyler High soccer team. He earned soccer academic all-state honors, an OSHA 30 certification and he is a state TSA qualifier. Outside of school, he volunteers at the East Texas Food Bank.

Salutatorian Adriana Higuera plans to attend the University of Texas at Tyler to major in biology to pursue a career as a pharmacist. She is a member of the Tyler High marching band, National Honor Society, UIL math team, senior leadership team and an Advancement Via Individual Determination student. As a student in the health sciences program, she earned a CPR certification and she will take the pharmacy technician certification exam later in May. The Tyler High School graduation ceremony will be at 8 p.m.

May 22 at Christus Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium.

Tyler Legacy High School

M

ore than 460 Tyler Legacy High School students are set to graduate as a part of the 2021 senior class later this month.

Valedictorian Caroline Richbourg plans to attend the University of Texas at Austin to major in business within the Canfield Business Honors Program. She is captain of the swim team, treasurer of Science National Honor Society and a member of Key Club and several other honor societies.

She is a National Merit Commended Scholar, Advanced Placement scholar with distinction and she has received numerous swimming honors, including school records, first team all-state in the 100 Butterfly, and academic all-state elite team.

Outside of school, she is a member of the Texas Bank and Trust Student Board of Directors and volunteers with her church, local swim meets, political events and other community services.

Salutatorian Olivia Orren plans to attend Northwestern University to major in social policy. She is president of the student council and a member of many honor societies. She is co-captain of the debate team, where she has been a finalist in prestigious state and national-level competitions.

She placed second in the state congressional debate contest. She has participated in numerous musical theatre productions at Tyler Legacy, most recently playing the role of Rusty in “Footloose.”

Olivia also founded and is the president of the school’s chapter of the Zonta International Foundation Club to empower women through service and advocacy.

She is part of the College Board National Small Town Recognition Program and an AP scholar with distinction. Orren has tallied more than 500 volunteer hours through various community events and organizations.

Tyler ISD Early College High School

E

ighty students are set to graduate from Tyler ISD’s Early College High School later this month. Students at this high school earn both a high school diploma and an associates degree from Tyler Junior College.

Valedictorian Saide Bernal plans to attend the University of Texas at Austin to major in government. Along with her high school diploma, she will earn an associate degree in sociology from TJC, where she is a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.

At ECHS, she is the community service coordinator for the National Honor Society, a peer assisted learning tutor and an Advancement Via Individual Determination student.

She volunteers with Junior Achievement, Toys for Tots, Park Place Nursing Home and other community organizations.

Salutatorian Josue Martinez plans to attend Texas A&M University to major in aerospace engineering. Along with his high school diploma, Martinez will earn an associate degree from TJC with 62 hours of dual credit and he is a Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society member.

At ECHS, he is a member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society, Rho Kapp Social Studies Honor Society, and English and Science honor societies.

Outside of school, Martinez volunteers with the East Texas Food Bank, Carter BloodCare and Junior Achievement.

The Early College High School will be at 8 p.m. May 20 at Christus Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium.

Lindale High School

O

ver 300 Lindale High School students will graduate as a part of the class of 2021 at the end of this month.

Valedictorian Braden Heizer plans to attend the University of Texas at Austin and major in chemical engineering. He said he wants to use that degree to help improve energy production.

Salutatorian Ferris Turney will attend Texas A&M University in the fall to major in mechanical engineering.

After college, he wants to aim for a job that will be in need of a mechanical engineer.

Lindale High School’s graduation ceremony will be May 28 at 8 p.m. at Eagle Stadium.

The Brook Hill School Class of 2021

N

early 70 students graduated from The Brook Hill School in Bullard on Saturday evening.

Valedictorian Landry Graves will attend Texas A&M University in the fall majoring in mechatronics engineering. While at Brook Hill, he played on the varsity tennis team. He was a member of the National Honor Society, the student council, The Texas Bank and Trust Student Board of Directors, the Texas Forestry Association, the Chick-Fil-A Leadership Academy and mastered firing procedures of the cannon at Brook Hill by serving as a member of the Brook Hill Cannon Guard.

Graves was honored with the Brook Hill Heart Award, was chosen to be a member of the Rotary Young Citizens Club both as a freshman and again as a senior and he was awarded the Rotary Youth Leadership Award. He was honored by the Tyler Rotary as Brook Hill’s outstanding senior male student and was awarded the Brook Hill Character Award for four years. Graves was instrumental in establishing 3D printers for the school’s innovation center.

Salutatorian Nicole Tng was a member of the varsity basketball team, varsity track team, varsity tennis team, The Brook Hill drumline and the Chick-Fil-A Leadership Academy. She was also chosen to serve on The Texas Bank and Trust Student Board of Directors. While at Brook Hill, Tng competed and earned honors in TAPPS in advanced math and science events as well as One Act Play.

She plans to attend the University of California-Davis to major in life sciences for a veterinary medicine degree with an emphasis on small animals.

orty students are set to graduate from Bishop Thomas K. Gorman Catholic School in Tyler in May as a part of the 2021 class.

Valedictorian Juliane Mallari has served as co-president of the student body and secretary of the National Honor Society.

She served as assistant captain of the 2021 TAPPS 4-A Cross Country state championship team. She has also excelled as a member of the Bishop Gorman orchestra and the all-region orchestra and served as tech stage manager in many Bishop Gorman drama productions.

Mallari plans to attend the University of Texas at Austin to major in mechanical engineering.

Salutatorian Victoria “Tori” Burnette was named the captain of the 2021 cross country state championship team, she led the team with a third place finish at state this fall and she received TAPPS all-state team recognition and academic all-state recognition. total of 250 students are set to graduate from Jacksonville High School this month as a part of the school’s 2021 senior class.

Valedictorian Jenna Armitage will be attending Texas State University to pursue a bachelor of arts and major in psychology.

She then plans to continue her education by attending seminary to obtain a master’s degree in Christian family counseling.

She earned the highest ranking high school graduate scholarship from the state of Texas. She’s a four-year member of the Jacksonville High School varsity band, where she has served as drum major for two years, held numerous leadership positions and earned multiple UIL awards. Armitage has also been a member of the JHS varsity choir, where she has earned regional UIL honors.

Armitage has been a state honors qualifier for both band and choir and been named a music scholar by the Texas Music Educators Association. She has been an active member of the JHS Key Club, Theatre Club, National Honor Society and National Art Honor Society, where she was awarded a perfect score on her painting entry during a recent Visual Arts Scholastic Event. A member of Central Baptist Church in Jacksonville, she also performs with the youth praise band and is a member of the praise team and welcome team.

Salutatorian Morgan Washburn earned a position on the 75th line of the Apache Belles at Tyler Junior College, where she will be doing her undergraduate work. Upon completion of her TJC studies, she will continue at a university to pursue a degree in agriculture business. She is a four-year member of The Cherokee Charmers, where she has held numerous leadership positions and served as captain her senior year.

Washburn has been a member of the Jacksonville High School Key Club, student council and currently serves as president of JHS National Honor Society. She has been on the JHS volleyball and powerlifting teams and been a member of the JHS chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

She has served as an Infinity Youth Volleyball Club volunteer coach, peer tutor for Jacksonville College dual credit and studied dance at Swink Studio of Dance for the past eight years. She is a member of the Cornerstone Baptist Church youth group, where she serves on the church youth council. Morgan was a 2020 JHS homecoming queen finalist, named most reliable girl, Miss Sunshine, Cherokee Charmer Sweetheart, National Honor Society Sweetheart and recently voted as senior class favorite girl.

early 150 students will graduate from Rusk High School later this month.

Valedictorian Callie Lynn is the president of the National Honor Society and student council and she’s the treasurer of the Leo Club. She is a varsity volleyball, basketball, and softball player and she’s also the Rusk High School mascot, Ellie the Eagle. Callie plans to attend Stephen F. Austin State University, where she will major in sports management. She wants to have a job to help others achieve their dreams through sports.

Salutatorian Jett Jenkins played varsity football and competed on the UIL science team. He is also a member of the Leo Club. Jett plans to attend Tyler Junior College in the fall.

After finishing his studies at TJC, he plans to transfer to Stephen F. Austin State University and obtain a bachelor’s degree. He hopes to have a career as a game warden for the state of Texas.

Valedictorian Anthony David Salgado plans to attend Texas A&M University to major in mechanical engineering.

Salgado has been a member of the National Honor Society for two years and he served as president his senior year.

He played football for the past four years and received many all-district and all-state honors. He also played baseball all four years and was a member of the powerlifting team for a year.

Salgado was voted best all around by his senior classmates.

Salutatorian Samantha Ann Eastman plans to attend the University of Texas at Tyler and major in biology. Eastman has been in athletics for the past four years playing volleyball and golf.

During her sophomore and senior years, she achieved many awards playing both sports, including regional semi-finals for volleyball and the regional golf tournament. She has been a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes for four years and a yearbook staff member her senior year. Samantha was voted most athletic and best all around by her fellow classmates and awarded Miss Troup High School by the entire student body.

Troup High School will hold its commencement ceremony at 8 p.m. on May 28 at Tiger Stadium in Troup.

Seating on both sides of the stadium will be available. There are no limits on the number of family members who may attend.

Social distancing and wearing masks are recommended. In the event of bad weather, the alternate date would be May 29 at a time to be determined.

Stepdaughter is banned from home DEAR ANNIE: I have been married to my husband for three years. We own a home together and live a nice life. He had been single for about eight years before meeting me. He had two other serious relationships with women who his children didn’t like. His youngest, 16, lived with us for two years and made life hard. He didn’t follow rules, and he clearly didn’t like me.

As a result, his married adult daughter has been very disrespectful to me in our home. It got so bad that I told my husband she isn’t welcome if she can’t be respectful. It’s been over a year now since she has come over. In that time, the youngest turned 18 and moved in with her. We live separate family lives. I’m not welcome or invited to holidays or birthdays.

I come from a divorced family, and regardless of my feelings about my parents’ spouses, I am respectful of my parents’ relationships and homes. My husband doesn’t care. He says we are in a relationship with each other, not the kids. But to me, I can’t imagine his leaving me on Christmas every year or sneaking — fastforward — to his grandchildren’s birthday parties.

Would it make more sense to move on because I would never be happy with this, or is it worth sticking out in hopes the girls will change? — HIS CHILDREN HATE ME DEAR HIS CHILDREN HATE ME: If you just wait for his children to change, and you don’t change yourself or do some introspection as to why they treat you the way they do, then things will not change. Saying that your 16-year-old stepson was disre-

spectful and didn’t follow rules is not really understanding adolescents.

Of course, respect is always the goal of parenting a teenager, but cutting them a little slack when they are trying to find their way from childhood to adulthood is also very important. Instead of interpreting his refusal to follow rules as a direct attack on you, consider that he’s trying to figure himself out. Remember, you are the adult. The more understanding and empathy you can bring, the more receptive they will be to reconciliation. Try to put yourself in his and your stepdaughters’ shoes. Someone has to extend the olive branch. Be the bigger person for the sake of your marriage and — fast-forward — for the wonderful family and grandkids you will celebrate holidays with together.

DEAR ANNIE: Unfortunately, like a lot of people, I have sent out too many sympathy cards this past year. And many families opting for no visitation and sometimes even no services, it’s hard to come up with something other than flowers or food. I have copied an idea from a friend when my own mother passed away years ago. I now include stamps with my card. You can buy forever stamps for around $10. They fit nicely in a card and are very practical and useful. Plus, they last “forever,” so people can use them as they’re needed. — SYMPATHY STAMPS DEAR STAMPS: What a great idea. total of 351 Whitehouse High School students will receive their diploma at Wildcat Stadium at the 2021 commencement ceremony.

At the top of the 2021 class, Valedictorian Ashley Smith will attend the University of Texas at Austin as a Dedman Scholar.

She plans to major in international relations and the Plan II Honors Program to work as a policy analyst for the State Department one day.

Salutatorian Lucas Baum will attend the Colorado School of Mines to study civil engineering while pursuing a minor in humanitarian engineering.

He wants to have a career in international development with the United Nations Office for Project Services, United States Agency for International Development or a foreign non-governmental organization that focuses on community development.

Whitehouse High School graduation will be May 28 at 8:30 pm at Wildcat Stadium.

ver 70 students will graduate in the 2021 Ore City High School class this month.

Valedictorian Zacherey Casey participated in UIL Academics, Texas Math and Science Coaches Association, National Honor Society, rocketry, FFA, theatre, debate and band. He was FFA president and NHS vice president. He has advanced to regional and state competitions in UIL science and literary criticism, band solo and ensemble, FFA quiz team and farm business management. He was selected as a National Merit member of the National Speech and Debate Association and a College Board Rural and Small School Scholar. His ACT score of 33 ranks him in the top 1% of scores nationally.

He will attend Texas A&M University in College Station, where he received their national recognition scholarship and will work toward an engineering degree.

Salutatorian Sharon Ruiz participated in band, FFA, rocketry, National Honor Society, student council, UIL academics, TMSCA and yearbook. Sharon advanced to UIL Academics regional competition in headline writing, state competition in band UIL solo and ensemble and state competition in FFA nursery landscaping. She was also selected by her peers as this year’s homecoming queen. She was selected for NASA’s High School Aerospace Scholars Program.

She will attend Texas A&M University to earn a degree in biology for a career in orthodontics.

Ore City High School graduation will be at Mobberly Baptist Church in Longview at 7 p.m. on May 20.

Salutatorian Kevin Tang plans to attend Texas A&M University to complete a bachelor’s degree in computer science. Tang enjoys volunteering, helping with fundraisers and festivals. He’s competed in the Visual Arts Scholastic Event competition for all four years of high school. He is a part of National Honor Society, Chess Club and Junior Senate. He also plays guitar and piano.

Krystina Randall Krystina Randall, daughter of David and Kari Taylor, will graduate Summa Cum Laude from TJC with an associate’s degree in general studies on May 10th. She will also graduate from TISD Early College High School on May 20th, ranked #5 in her class. She is a member of Phi Theta Kappa, National Honor Society, National English Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society, Science National Honor Society, and Rho Kappa Social Studies Honor Society. She plans on attending UT Tyler in the fall and major in English-Creative Writing.

Nathaniel Smith Nathaniel Smith, son of Vera Smith, will graduate from Arizona State University Summa Cum Laude 4.0 GPA with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology (Psychological Science) and a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience. He will start the National Institutes of Health PREP program at Baylor College of Medicine Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences in June 2021.
